AgustaWestland Training Systems – Recognising our Customers’ Specialist Needs

AgustaWestland training is designed to provide our customers with the essential capabilities they need to

maximise the use of their aircraft. Training is a fully integrated part of our long term operational support

solutions which include flight/mission planning and the use of innovative logistic support systems. Our

students benefit from advanced multimedia technology in specialist classrooms and we also deliver highly

effective training via web-based learning tools. As the aircraft design authority we have developed a

range of part task trainers and simulators that deliver the most cost-effective approach to training. In

particular:

Customers receive highly effective training solutions that maximise operational performance,

safety and effectiveness. This includes full flight simulation to deliver a range of flight and mission

training including VIP transport, offshore, emergency and SAR operators.

Our multimedia solutions include modular, computer-based training and computer aided

instruction that can be linked to interactive electronic technical publications (IETPs).

Our clients can use an interactive cockpit explorer; a virtual 3D cockpit used for pilot cockpit

familiarisation and a Virtual Maintenance Trainer to improve their maintainers‟ troubleshooting,

component location and maintenance procedure capabilities.

AgustaWestland‟s Flight and Mission Planning Stations (“Skyflight”) support operators during

flight and mission preparation. They enable operators to acquire, manage, process and analyze

all the data needed to carry out a flight or mission in a wide range of operational scenarios. In

particular “Skyflight” fulfils helicopter operational and training mission support needs when

operating offshore and when operating from land bases.

Customers can use Flight Training Devices (FTD) with full size replicas of instruments,

equipment, panels, and controls in an open flight deck area or an enclosed aircraft cockpit

replica. These devices provide comprehensive training for standard aircraft operations and also

emergency procedures in simulated environments. AgustaWestland usually designs and builds

these devices in full consultation with our customers to fulfil specific operational needs.

3.2 AW139 Precision Teaching (PT)

Helicopter Types: AW139

Helicopter Configuration:

This multimedia material covers the basic configuration of the helicopter. If not already available in the catalogue, AgustaWestland can develop multimedia material for special or optional helicopter kits when a customer requests it.

System Description: Precision Teaching is a behavioural method of learning aimed at increasing fluency. In Precision Teaching, fluency means being able to carry out tasks correctly and quickly. This contrasts with traditional teaching methods that tend to concentrate solely on accuracy without considering speed.

AgustaWestland is applying Precision Teaching methodology, to the creation of new training aids aimed at providing pilots and aircrew with very high levels of confidence in the use of their controls and displays. Training tasks covered by these systems include:

Helicopter cockpit familiarisation, by acquiring detailed knowledge of the location and purpose of all the controls and displays in the cockpit: instrument panel, overhead console and interseat console;

Multi Function Display familiarisation, by understanding the meaning of the displayed data (including symbols and digital data) and interacting intuitively with the appropriate data using the control menu systems;

Gaining full confidence with normal and emergency procedures, to the point where correct actions are taken under pressure to recover the situation in the minimum time required.

Precision Teaching includes student self assessment, using E-Learning technology, typically using a PC with dedicated software. Here, the student is asked a large number of questions regarding the current subject in a very short time (up to 40 questions per minute or more). The Trainee is asked to respond to the questions immediately, receiving instantaneous feedback (right or wrong). At the end of each session, trainees' results are displayed on a Celeration Chart that allows easy interpretation of its performance.

Trainees repeat the Precision Teaching assessment until they get the answers 100% correct, before moving to the next topic. The Trainee will take a Precision Teaching self assessment session for no more than 10 minutes in a day.

A Complementary Tutoring Service is also offered to monitor the performance of the students in their daily activity and to motivate them.

Main Advantages: This methodology provides:

“Knowledge retention”: Trainees will not forget what they have learned, even over long periods of time.

“Resistance to Stress”: Trainees will not forget their knowledge during the stress of a test, or later, on the job.

“Ability to apply knowledge”: Trainees will be able to apply their knowledge even to situations outside the scope of their training.

Target Population: Pilots.

Course Objectives: (1) Cockpit Familiarization and (2) Normal & Emergency Procedures.

License policy: The software license includes one (1) student account. Each account has a duration of three (3) months from the activation.
