THUNDER NEWS EDITION NO 12 JUNE 2017 North West Tasmania Thunder Basketball Club Inc. Thunder News 1 Edition No 12 – JUNE 2017 LOCATED AT SCHWEPPES ARENA ULVERSTONE THUNDER WINNING FORM The Thunder team’s good form has continued with two very solid road wins last weekend against the AIS and the Canberra Cannons, with even contributions from everyone once again a feature. Double wins on the road are extremely rare and the achievement should not be underplayed. We now return home with the top four in our conference firmly in our sights; a win against the third placed eastern conference team, the Albury Wodonga Bandits this Saturday night would be a great stepping stone to closing the gap on our higher placed southern conference rivals. Get along this Saturday night; there are not many opportunities left to watch a high standard game in a great atmosphere with like-minded supporters! TODD NOTHROP CANCER FUNDRAISER We would like to put out an early warning about our annual Todd Nothrop Memorial Game on the 15 th July, , which raises funds for cancer research on behalf of Cancer Council, Tasmania. Todd was well known to all basketball followers through his contribution to the NWBU via the Red Hoppers club and also with SEABL when the North West side was known as the Breakers. This will be a huge night as we take on Tassie rivals the Hobart Chargers and we are hoping the expected capacity crowd will dig deep into their products and make a donation in memory of Todd and to support cancer research here in our home state. We reached a very impressive donation total last year and are hoping we can attract similar support at this year’s game. More details will be made available closer to the date.

SEABL CHANGESThere were some proposed changes put forward at the 2017 mid-season SEABL conference that will almostcertainly impact on the competition next year, with the major ones concerning the eligibility of “restricted andunrestricted players” and the other concerning the duration and make-up of the 2018 roster.1. PLAYER ELIGIBILITY

a) Restricted Players: From 2018, the following will apply; each team can have three restricted players:-

Category “A” players, (2):being players who were born outside the Asia/Oceania region and are required to hold an annual ForeignPlayer’s Licence;Category “B” players, (1):being either an NBL/WNBL player who averaged greater than 50% of available court time in the precedingNBL or WNBL season or,an Australian player who averaged greater than 50% of available court time in the past season with aDivision 1 European club.

b) Unrestricted Players: Category B players who meet the following conditions:-- Players who have played 60 or more games consecutively over 3+ seasons at their SEABL club;- Players who have played more than 125 SEABL games accumulatively at their SEABL club;- Players who return to their last SEABL club after playing an NBL/WNBL rookie season.

2. 2018 SEABL SEASONMajority of clubs, (not Thunder) were in favour of a roster of a 20 game season starting first week ofApril and finishing in early August. This would mean the end of the two conference structure and allowfor a full league ladder and an 8 team final series. Benefits put forward as; less interference with Nationalteam commitments and allows for more NBL/WNBL players to consider playing SEABL. (Our concernsraised at the meeting around losing two home games and the associated revenue loss, were met with ashow of hands around the room that indicated that only four teams across both conferences actuallymake any money on home games – unbelievable!!)

FOOTY TIPPINGLatest results are in and a few people would now be getting nervous as JB looms ominously into the jointleadership after 13 rounds. No doubt be something of a procession from here on in I would think. Gareth andRyan from Physiotas continue to impress and Brad Simpson is doing as well as he is in our local Fantasy DreamTeam competition. I am however expecting a late charge from our Administrator, Deb Lynch.

SEABL TEAM OF THE WEEKCongratulations to both Ahmad Starks and Jeremiah Ingram, who have been selected in the SEABL Team of theWeek in recent weeks; a fitting reward for their hard work and consistent contribution. Well done guys!

PHYSIO HONOURSA big shout out to our long-serving physio Ryan Carroll from Physiotas who was recently announced as theteam physio for the Under 17 Australian team at the upcoming Oceania championships. Ryan is certainlybuilding an impressive resume on the national scene and his appointment is fitting reward for his dedication, knowledge and commitment. Those outside the Thunder “inner circle” would be amazed at the amount oftime and effort this guy puts in to ensure that our team is prepared to the max, that we are organised andready for our demanding road trips and that individual players are looked after professionally andcomprehensively when the inevitable niggles and injuries occur. He is a legend and an invaluable member ofthe Thunder team. Congratulations and thanks from all of us!

SPONSOR’S FUNCTIONThunder is rapt to be able to secure the services of Morgan Gaffney as our guest speaker at our sponsor’sfunction at our last home game on the 22nd July. Morgan is the first woman athlete to win the prestigious BurnieGift on 3 occasions, her most recent victory being in 2017. Morgan has run a best time of 11.72 secs for the 100metres and there are undoubtedly many more highlights to come in the future. Depending on sponsor numbersattending, we may be able to throw the opportunity open to members as well. I will advise closer to the event.

HISTORYInteresting to see if anyone can identify any of these youthful cheer squad members from 1991?
