Kia ora Kahurangi whānau Last week was an especially big week for us at Kahurangi School with the Education Review Office (ERO) visiting. Their visit began on Monday with a Mihi Whakatau where we welcomed them to our kura (school). This was lead by our older tamariki. As usual our whole school participated in this welcome and the ERO team spoke of how moved they were to be welcomed in this way.
Over the week the team met with our Board of Trustees, leadership team, teachers and some of our tamariki. Their purpose was to investigate deeply into our teaching and learning programmes, the learning opportunities here on offer, our achievement picture over time, the work of our leadership team and our governance systems and procedures. They did this by talking with us and checking our documentation.
On the final day of their visit they reported their emerging findings to the Board and our leadership team. They spoke of the strengths they saw, areas of high quality practise, the impact we were making in regards to raising outcomes for students, the challenges we’d faced, the quality of our teaching and leadership team, growth since their last visit and suggestions they had for us going forward. They praised us a lot, as well as giving us a lot to think about. In my welcome speech to the team I had said we looked forward to them sharing their wisdom and supporting our school to grow even stronger and when they left my sense is that this had definitely happened.
Now we await their report which will be a summary of what was mentioned above. This report will not only be sent to the Ministry of Education but also to you, so you as parents and whānau can get an inside view into how well an external education agency sees our school is operating. I look forward to sharing this report with you via our newsletter in approximately eight weeks.
This photo captures Preston buddy-reading with Awhi. I think it’s a lovely example of how wonderful our senior pupils are with our younger ones.

to our new students
Since our last newsletter we’ve had 11 new pupils start with us and it’s been really lovely getting to know them.
Aliana, Miles, Sophie, Oscar, Django, Jackson, Oliver, Annie, and Tommy have all turned 5 and joined Kathryn and the learners in Waka Rimu Mahanga. Other than Oliver all these children and their whānau are new to Kahurangi so an extra special welcome you. We hope you all enjoy Kahurangi and feel very welcomed.
Oliver joins his older sister Madeline which is nice.
We also welcome back Te Ramaroa and Indie-Storm who have returned from a period in Auckland.
A letter of concernI received this email last week and I thought I would share it with you.
Hi Kyran
I hope you had a lovely break! I was meaning to talk to you about this but I forgot and now I was just reminded again by a careless driver.
The amount of people speeding through the road at school pick up and drop off time is unbelievable. Often it’s parents from Kahurangi school. I find it very concerning as a parent.
Also, people tend to park everywhere. In front of the zebra crossing etc where it is very hard for other drivers to then see kids or parents with little kids who come for pick-up when no crossing guard is in place. I cannot understand why people don’t just park a few meters down the road.
Maybe you could put something in the newsletter as I find it is quite serious and I think it needs attention.
Thanks,
A concerned parent
Teacher and principal stop-work meetings this weekThis week we have been informed that NZEI (the Teachers and Principals’ union) are calling stop working meetings on Monday (today) and Thursday from 1:30-3.30pm.
To not cause interruption to parents and whānau we will stay open on these afternoons but the normal teaching and learning programmes will not be offered due to lots of our teachers not being with us.
On these afternoons we’ve decided to have some extra Golden Time sessions which will make supervision easier on a skeleton staff.
Early WarningNO SCHOOL
It’s expected that school will be closed on Wednesday 29 May as teachers and principals are like-ly to be on strike.
Unfortuntately this type of concern isn’t rare and is a constant concern of our staff, our road patrol volunteers along with some of our parents. I hope in sharing this email it will encourage everyone to follow road rules for the safey of our tamariki and families.
As an extra precaution I’ve asked our local police officer if he can do random visits during pickup and drop-off times to support us in keeping our children safe.

Please send children to school wearing suitable running clothes and shoes.
Children might also like to wear their house colour too.
We need parent helpers to act as marshals around the course. If you can help please be at school at 8:45am.
Thank you!The Clegg whānau donated some books. A couple of the books are centred around coding. One is written by an African American teenager who complained that she had no role models for getting into computers, so she wrote a story about herself. The second coding book is from the UK and based on kids who don’t understand what coding is, but they like puzzles. The other two books are chapter books which are Sam and Jo-jo’s favourite books with female heroes.

Spell-a-thonIt is now a tradition of ours that we have a spellathon bianually at Kahurangi. We are asking our children to put their brains to work for the benefit of our school.
Every child will have a list of words to learn and a sponsor sheet. We are asking and encouranging parents and whānau to help the children learn the words and collect sponsors.
We hope to send home spellathon information this Friday.
ResignationUndoubtedly you will be surprised to hear that Gareth Rouch our Waka Pūhara Toru teacher resigned over the holidays.
Gareth returned to full time teaching this year and found the many expectations required of a teacher just too difficult to meet.
His decision to leave suddenly does mean we are now in a difficult position of finding a teacher for this class who can start immediately. We will being doing all we possibly can to ensure this disruption has the least impact possible on the children in this class.

At Kahurangi we know that parents and whānau are the first and most important teachers for our children. Building educationally powerful connections and relationships between parents, whānau and school is vital for each child’s ongoing learning and success.
Golden Time is every Friday afternoon and is extremely popular part of our week. It’s a time in which the children get to choose what they’d like to join in on and with whom. The children get to choose what they’d like to join. The activities change each week. All children earn their Golden Time by following our school expectations.
A few years back we introduced Golden Time as a way of ensuring that children who engage and behave well are acknowledged. We’ve continued it because the children love it and now know that when they work hard, cooperate and treat one another with respect they will be rewarded for their effort. Above are photos of our most recent Golden time.

Kahurangi Friends is a group of locals with an interest in supporting the school and our community. We live here, we see the talent and potential in our students and our community, and we pitch in to make things happen.
Each term we get together for a catch up and this term we’d like to include an information session where you can meet Kahurangi Friends as well as ask us questions.
Being a Kahurangi Friend means you can join in as much or as little as you like. Some people come to all our meetings and want to make decisions. Others come to help peel vegies for a hāngi, work in our school gardens, decorate the school hall for the Halloween disco, or help with setting up stages, lights, and tents when we run Kotahi (our music event on February 6 each year).
We believe in having fun while we work, welcoming everyone who wants to join in, and making a positive difference for the Strathmore Park community.
Most of us have children at Kahurangi School. Others live nearby and enjoy what we do, so they’ve got involved, too.
It’s easy to get in touch if you can’t make our Info session on Thursday. You can ask Margaret, our fabulous Office Manager at school, to pass your name and phone number or email address on to us, you can send us a message on Facebook or Instagram (search for Kahurangi Friends), or email us at [email protected]!
During Movin’March we allowed our tamariki (children) to ride their wheels every day during break times and we were so delighted to see that this encouraged so many more children to ride or scoot to school that we’ve decided to let them continue.

Introducing Big Brothers Big Sisters
of WellingtonA new community programme, Big Brothers Big Sisters Wellington, has recently launched in Wellington. We’d love to share with you a little more about this wonderful programme for tamariki!
Big Brothers Big Sisters is New Zealand’s largest mentoring programme. They provide volunteer mentors (“Big Brothers” and “Big Sisters”) for any young person who needs one between the ages of 6 & 12.
Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteers, or “mentors”, meet with the young person they are matched with for one to four hours each week, for at least one year.
They will share everyday moments like cooking a meal, playing a game, or walking on the beach. This lets the child know they have a special friend.
If you are interested in learning more about Big Brothers Big Sisters, please contact their Programme Coordinator, Hannah McCaleb, at: [email protected] or 020-417-52788. You can also visit their website at: http://bigbrothersbigsisters.org.nz/Wellington.html.
The Sustainability Trust has reached out and let us know that the Wellington Curtain Bank is up and running - and ready for another big year.
If you live between Otaki and Wellington and have a Community Services Cardholder under your roof, the Curtain Bank will provide you with FREE custom made to measure, quality lined curtains for your homes main living and sleeping areas.
You do not need to own your own home or even be the leaseholder to apply. They will replace as many or as few curtains as you need.
All you need to do is measure your windows, place your order, and wait six weeks for the curtains to arrive on your doorstep.
For more information ask Margaret at our office.
Do you need curtains but can’t afford them?
