CHECHEN EUROPEAN WRESTLING CUP WINNER,
TRAINER, ARTIST AND INTELLECTUAL ZAIDY ALASKHANOV‟S LIFE AND DESTINY WITH
CAUCASUS AND ARMENIA By HAMO MOSKOFIAN
Thursday, 5 June 2014 Volume # 9, Issue # 104 Page 1
RAG MAMOUL receives material from around the world and in many languages. Our Liberal principles advocate ‘Freedom of
speech’ as a mainstay of our beliefs; consequently the subjects and ideas presented will not necessarily reflect our point of view.
All published material is reviewed, however, we rely on the kind understanding of our audience when grammatical and spelling
mistakes are missed. And in some rare cases, correction of submitted material is purposely not addressed, if it changes the implied
context of the author.
When recently met this powerful
sportsman, artist and intellectual Zaidy
Alaskhanov at Belyaevo art gallery in
Moscow, where his exhibition was going
to take place all about his complicated but
glorious life, beloved Caucasus and
Chechnya, I was completely shocked by
his love and respect to the Armenians. Art expert Thomas
Haroutyounian introduced me to Alaskhanov, telling me that
he dreamt organizing an exhibition in the Middle East,
especially in Beirut… by an Armenian gallerist, like in
Moscow… Perhaps he didn‟t know well, the horrible crimes
committed by some of his ancestors, serving in the “Special
Corps” of the Ottoman Empire, during the first World War,
against the Armenians, the sons and daughters of this
brilliant nation, the Hamshen Armenians, whom Lavrenti
Beria deported instead of the Mogrels, in 1944 to Kazakhstan,
together with thousands of Chechens and Circassians, mostly
blue eyed, blonds like the Hamshen Armenians of the
Caucasus. Caucasians inherit extra-ordinary physical power,
excellence in different sorts of traditional and Olympic
wrestling, Alaskhanov‟s talent was immediately noticed.

_ “I was the main training partner of the world-famous Daghestani-Armenian world and Olympic champion Youry
Shahmouradov (Shahmouradian), he called me his “black horse” because as a talented youngster, I always defeated him
in training… He was very kind personality and the Armenian champion always helped me to enter the difficult Soviet
wrestling hierarchy, which was a galactic of stars… remembered Alaskhanov.
His talent in art appeared early, but he had the possibility in developing that unique talent in an advanced age. His
paintings are all about Caucasus, the villagers, people, Chechens and circassians, Georgians and Armenians. The great
heroes of liberty and freedom, even the untold sufferings of the deported people, harsh mountaineers, struggle for life,
all pictured in the colorful compositions of Alaskhanov.
_ “As he was winning cups and medals, his interest in art especially painting, was growing and one day, the learning
process resulted in logically _ he took a brush and lost himself in creative process. Many years have passed since his
thinking changed and he felt passion for painting, being unknown before, but stealing over talented self-taught artist.
That was time of fruitful, intensive work, time of unexpected discoveries, embarrassing mistakes and artistic
achievements, time of critical analysis and creative trips…”, writes about Zaidy Alaskhanov‟s “Family Tree” biography,
Thomas Haroutiounyan.
The portraits and landscapes in oils are his favorite genres. Scintillating with colors, they are mainly endued with
amazing spirit of appeasement and absolute purity. The pictures “Spring In Itomkali”, “Khoroshoy”, „Itom Kali Black
Mountains” are extremely poetic… As if the author had dropped his lyric cheer on his pictures.

_ “With charming frankness and earnestness, the artist depicts rare people, Chechnya‟s prominent men, relatives and
friends, revealing their characters in work, on vacating or in other domestic scenes. Such works as “The Family Tree”,
“Timue in Burko”, “A Talk With The Wriend” are painted with the bright, clear colors… To unveil the inner world of
the depicted people is a principle task for Alaskhanov, and since they are inseparably connected with the national
traditions, the author‟s device is rather clear _ to present them in their traditional clothes – burkas, chokhas, sheep
skin hats etc.”, describes the art of his multi-talented friend, Thomas Haroutiounyan, the organizer of the “Family
Tree” solo exhibition for Alaskhanov, at the prefecture of south-western administrative district of Moscow in April-
May 2014 under the patronage of “Belyaevo” capitol gallery.
_”I will invite you and my Armenian friends to a historic visit to Chechnya, as a guest of our president Kadyrov!” tells
with a hospitable smile Alaskhanov, a bright page in the troubled history of the Caucasian nations.

students are from Russia and four are from Turkey.
The founder of Dilijan International School Ruben Vardanian noted that Dilijan College will enable people from other
countries to get to know Armenia.
―It is great that children from Chile, Ethiopia, South Africa, Malaysia, Canada, China and other countries will arrive in
Armenia to get their education here. This will provide them with an opportunity to discover Armenia, to understand how
we live, the people we are; and in this sense the world will become more open to Armenia, while Armenians will also learn
a lot of interesting things for themselves,‖ he said.
The Dilijan International School is a large-scale philanthropic initiative putting Armenia on the world educational map. The
School will open in September 2014 for 90 students. By 2023 the school hopes that it will host 650 students from at least 60

CONFERENCE ON “GENDER BASED VIOLENCE”
AT HAIGAZIAN UNIVERSITY
As part of a series of university debates, the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon, in cooperation with Haigazian
University, organized a conference on the topic of ―Gender Based Violence‖, on May 23, 2014, in the University
Auditorium.
The debate tackled several aspects of this severe form of inequality from a human rights, as well as women‘s rights
perspective.
Students, faculty, staff and the wider public engaged in discussions with Lebanese officials, public institutions
representatives, Ambassadors of EU Member States, academics, as well as NGOs and civil society members.
In his welcoming address, Haigazian University President, Rev. Dr. Paul Haidostian, introduced the topic of ―Gender Based
Violence‖; a topic that is related to basically every individual in every place, at all times, that is, an aspect of human dignity.
The President also took the opportunity to thank the EU Delegation in Lebanon for reaching out to our society.
H.E. Mrs. Angelina Eichhorst – Head of the EU Delegation to Lebanon, stated that it is important to hear everybody and that
is what EU stands for, inviting the Lebanese youth to engage in discussion and dialogue. She also expressed her gratitude for
the good cooperation between Haigazian University and the EU, declaring that she looks forward to strengthen it.
The moderator of the conference, Mrs. Shaghig Hudavertian, an Instructor in Psychology at Haigazian University, briefly
defined the term gender based violence, and stated the importance of the question of equality, which is a major issue today
leading to various forms of physical and sexual violence, taking place in Europe, Lebanon and elsewhere.

The first panelist of the conference Mr.Renaud Detalle, Deputy Regional Representative of the Office of the High
Commission for Human Rights, stated that the conventional elimination of all forms of discrimination against women is
necessary, and the United Nations considers the latest law of domestic violence adopted by the male dominated Lebanese
Parliament as a very positive legal development. He congratulated all, and stated that the UN will remain involved in the
process of implementing gender based equality.
Ms. ZoyaRouhana, Director of KAFA (enough Violence and Exploitation), affirmed that countering the exploitation of
women and children and all kinds of violence based on gender is necessary. Being a vehement supporter of women‘s and
children‘s rights, Ms. Rouhana said that there is a great need to enact new laws, amend and implement new policies to
expandthe methods of the protection of women.
Judge GhalebGhanem, Former President of the Supreme Court in Lebanon, further discussed the topic of gender based
violence, stating that he has devoted much effort in the drafting and editing of the domestic violence law passed by the
Lebanese parliament. Ghanem considered this law as a big step forward in protecting women, and advancing their rights
and safety.
Member of Parliament, Mr. GhassanMoukhaiber, expressed how he has always been keen about the topic of equality
between the two genders. Moukhaiber went on saying; passing the new law of domestic violence was a challenge, but the
bigger challenge is implementing it. He believes that it is important to explain and elaborate the different elements of the
law in order to have effective protection of women.
Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, H.E. Hester Somsen concluded the discussions by highlighting the low
representation of women in Lebanese politics and the labor market (2% and 22% respectively). She viewed the topic of
gender based violence correlated with the status of women in the society.
The conference was concluded with an interactive Q&A session, giving the audience the opportunity to address the experts
directly.

NEWLY PUBLISHED BOOK,
„OUR CROSS‟ BRIMS WITH POWERFUL STORIES
―Our Cross,‖ a collection of short stories by M. Salpi, was recently released in Los Angeles. Originally printed in 1921 in
France under the title ―Mer Khachu,‖ the book has been translated into English and published as the sixth volume of the
Genocide Library.
M. Salpi is the pen name of Aram Sahakian, who was a doctor, writer, journalist, and political activist. His short stories, all
based on actual persons and events, recount the personal experiences of Armenians from various walks of life, who
grappled with the ravages of the Genocide.
As a medical officer in the Turkish army during the First World War,
Sahakian met many Armenian soldiers and officers who recounted to him
the plight of their families following the deportations and massacres of
their communities at the hands of the Turkish government.
Later, while serving as a resident doctor at the Armenian refugee camp in
Port Said, Egypt, as well as during his assignments and travels in
Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria, Sahakian met numerous Genocide
survivors who sought to rebuild their lives and reunite with loved ones.
Sahakian found their experiences at turns heartbreaking and inspiring,
and went on to depict them in his writings.
Complementing the astute observations of a man of science with the
compassion and sensitivity of someone who himself had lived the
devastation of 1915, Sahakian‘s poignant stories pulsate with
unforgettable images and characters, each a microcosm of a nation‘s
cataclysm but also its irrepressible will to endure.
―‘Our Cross‘ is a deeply felt chronicle of Sahakian‘s experiences with
and through the survivors, interspersed with his eloquent reflections on
the enormity of his people‘s loss,‖ writes Hagop Manjikian in the book‘s
foreword.
Translated by Ishkhan Jinbashian, Our Cross includes reproductions of
illustrations from the book‘s Armenian original.
