Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a fantastic term, culminating in the Christmas events and activi-
ties. The children and staff have had a great time!
As we rapidly approach the Christmas holidays, I would like to reflect on the
recent celebrations and thank all those involved.
Last week we had the fantastic Christmas discos and fete; a big thanks to all of
the PTA for their organisation of the events and to you for your donations.
Well done to year 2 for an amazing nativity ‘Lights, camel, action’, the children were brilliant and the staff
too.
This week we have enjoyed Christmas singing and Carols; Year 1 in St Augustine Church, Y5&6 in St Au-
gustine Church and the Reception Nativity in school.
Thank you to all of our wonderful children who took part, the talented staff for organising and practising
and to you as parents for supporting us with your attendance. Delicious Christmas lunches and parties
have taken place on Wednesday and Thursday.
Topics for Term 3 are as follows:
Our values for Term 3 are:
Learning Behaviours: Persistence and resilience
Assembly Theme: Perseverance
PSHE Theme: Dreams & goals
We have lots planned for another busy term, further details will follow in newsletters after Christmas.
We hope you have a wonderful family Christmas and that Santa brings you all you would hope for; we look
forward to seeing you again in the New Year. Have a very happy holiday.

CURRICULUM CORNER
E-Safety Curriculum
As part of our curriculum, all of our children learn about being safe and supported when online.
With the holidays approaching we thought we would consider gaming devices.
Gaming devices provide a variety of interesting activities and ways for young people to engage
with their friends and families. However, it is important to be aware of what these devices can do
and how you can talk with your child to help them to use this technology in a safe and positive
way. All modern gaming devices offer parental controls to help you manage how your child uses
their device, but these do need to be set up in order for them to be operational.
Three steps for parents:
1. Understand the capabilities of gaming devices and how you as a parent can support
your child to be smart and safe in their gaming.
2. Find out about the parental controls available - it helps if you are the one to set up the
gaming device so you are in control of these.
3. Talk with your child about safe and responsible gaming and agree a set of family
rules.

YouTube is also a great place to watch
video tutorials on how to set up Parental Controls on any gaming device or tablet computer. Just type in the device followed by the words ‘parental controls’.

Twelve Days of Christmas Reading Bingo! Read over the Christmas holidays and complete each of the challenges!
Don’t forget – you don’t need to read the whole book each time and you can complete more than one box at a time… if you read about animals with a
wintery theme to someone older than you, that’s three boxes – wow!
Prizes to be won! Everyone who completes the challenge
will win a prize. Each class will have a lucky dip with one person from
the class winning a book of their choice. The class with the most children who take part
will win £30 worth of books for their class.
Complete the Summer, Christmas and Easter
challenges and you could win an e-reader! Good luck and Happy Reading!

How Being Late To School Impacts
Your Child
The vast majority of our children arrive in
good time to start the school day. We do
understand that occasionally things happen
that might result in your child being late.
However, we have a significant
minority of children arriving late on a regular
basis and this not only impacts negatively on
them, but also the rest of the class,
Children in KS1 should be in school at 8.45am
ready to start their classes by 8.55am each
day.
Children in KS2 should be in school at 8.40am
ready to start their classes by 8.45am each
day.
Thank you for your co-operation with this
matter.
BEDTIME STORY
Reading a bedtime story to
your children can be a
wonderful way to encourage
sleep as well as having many
more benefits. It can help and
encourage your child to love
reading and develops their imagination skills,
transporting them into magical worlds. With the
demands of life we know that sometimes it can be
hard to find the time every night to share a story
book, so some of the members of staff at Even
Swindon have been reading some bedtime stories for
you to share with your child at home. These are on
our website.
http://evenswindon.co.uk/parents/bedtime–stories/
If any parents would like to video themselves reading
a story then please let us know and we will add you to
our collection or video you at school if that is more
convenient for you. It would be lovely to have stories
in other languages as well.
Bikes and Scooters
Can all bikes and scooters please be removed
on the last day of term and not left over the
holidays as there will be a site clearance taking
place.
Many Thanks

Lost Words Poetry Competition
The Lost Words is a book by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris that uses poems as spells to
describe the natural word. It has proved popular in reconnecting children with landscape and nature
words that are falling out of common usage.
Every KS2 child in Swindon is invited to enter this competition to celebrate the book’s magic, and to
encourage them to talk about their surroundings and learn new words.
On 24 January 2019, Swindon Stories will host a Lost Words Festival which will be attended by a very
special VIP visitor. The National Literacy Trust will provide a Lost Words assembly for KS2, complete
with video message from author Robert Macfarlane, to be enjoyed on this date by every primary
school in Swindon.
The competition
1. Write a one page poem about Lost Words – these can be about words from the book, or on anything to do with nature and the outdoors.
Suggested words from the book: - Bluebell - Web - Ivy - Starling - Bramble - Magpie - Heron - Dandelion
2. Illustrate the poem to make a beautiful display piece
The prize
Three winning entries from each school will be on display at North Swindon Library, on the day of
the special event and into the future. The Swindon Stories team will pick three overall winners, who
will each be sent a signed copy of the Lost Words to share with their class.
These entries will need to be brought into school by Friday 11th January.

YEAR 5 TITANIC WOW DAY
Year 5 had their Titanic Wow day on Wednesday 5th December. The day started with a parent assembly. The children then used pastels to create silhouette pictures of the Titanic against either an early morning or an
evening sky. The afternoon was spent making plum cake & custard, which was a dish served in second-class. We also watched the film 'A Night to Remember'. Here's what some of the children had to say about the day:
‘It was a really great day and I enjoyed it. The best bit was watching ‘A Night to Remember’ because it was a very interesting film.’ Sara
‘Titanic has been the best topic so far because it has been the most interesting. I enjoyed the cooking (plum cake and custard). It tasted nice.’ Litton
‘I enjoyed crafting some awesome models, including our awesome pictures of the Titanic. They were all awesome. Our assembly was great because it gave lots of information about the Titanic to the parents.’ Jake
‘I have enjoyed having this extraordinary journey learning about the Titanic. We have been crafting, watching a movie and cooking. Our shoebox cabin was very luxurious. We made two separate beds and a porthole
window.’ Nazeefa
