Last week at our assembly we had a wonderful example of one of our students demonstrating a truly empathetic nature. Angus Woolley had grown his hair long so that he could participate in the World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for people with cancer. Angus raised over $500 towards this cause. Angus spoke of his own family’s experience with cancer and proudly and bravely allowed his hair to be cut and shaved at our assembly last Friday. Well done Angus, we are all so very proud of you and thank you for your kind and thought- ful and very empathetic act. Thank you to Nat Craig who kindly cut Angus’s hair on the day. The Family Food and Fun Night was a great success and I would like to thank all of the parents and students who helped on the night. It was a lot of fun and we raised $10,000 to go towards sports equipment, computers and garden projects. This night is an important night in our annual calendar and it only happens due to the kind donations we receive and the generosity of our parents and staff in giving up their time on the night. It was well attended and a highlight of our school year. This is the last newsletter of Term One and a great time to reflect on the busy and energetic term we have had. Our new preps are now established and used to the routine of school. Our curriculum programs and extracurricular activities are well established and beginning to demonstrate good growth in many areas. I would like to thank you all to a great first term and wish you a safe and happy holiday. For the first two weeks next term Mr Cooper and Mrs Pye will be in the Acting Principal position as I am taking two weeks long service leave. Gill Wright Principal

From the Desk of Mr Cooper
Welcome to the final newsletter for Term 1.
Drop off and pick up times continue to cause angst. There have been several near misses on the far side of the oval with
students nearly being hit by cars and this is of great concern! Please reverse-park cars next to the oval fence so that cars
can be driven straight out.
Another alternative could be to collect your child from the cricket club and walk them across to your car.
We will be keeping a careful watch on this situation over the coming weeks.
Many thanks to all of the Grade 4 & 5 children who have registered interest in the Woorabinda Camp next term. When
we receive our numbers, we will then draw names for the allotted places. Exciting times!
School Photographs will be taken on Monday 27th March starting at 8.45am. Place ensure that all children are dressed in
school uniform on this day. The photos will again be taken by SchoolPix and forms etc were distributed earlier this
week.
Congratulations to the entire community for getting behind the Family Food and Fun Night. The night was a great suc-
cess, despite being the day before the long weekend. Many thanks to all of the parents who helped on the night, a job
well done!
Finally, with school holidays fast approaching have a safe and enjoyable time with your families!

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and the Wider Community,
Last week, Mr Cooper and I were fortunate enough to attend the Mornington Peninsula Principal’s
Conference. The stand out for me was keynote speaker Hugh Van Cuylenburg. Hugh is the founder of
the resilience project and was highly engaging and passed on a really strong message about how to best
prepare our students to be resilient. He presented 3 keys to resilience which included; gratitude
(paying attention to what you have, rather than what you don’t), empathy and mindfulness.
As parents and educators he encouraged us to allow our children to fail, experience adversity, take
positive risks and be independent (if they can do something for themselves, then allow this to happen).
Some sample questions that were suggested to encourage gratitude included;
What was the best thing that happened today?
Who am I most grateful for and why?
What am I looking forward to tomorrow?
As a parent and educator, I am committed to building resilience in our students. The Victorian
Curriculum includes personal and social capabilities. Within this curriculum, our students are explicitly
taught these skills to intentionally develop resilience. As a parent, I encourage my own children to use
mindfulness daily. My favourite app for children is Smiling Mind and for adults Hugh suggested
Buddhify . Both worth looking in to!

Here is a little about me… I obtained my Bachelor of Early Childhood Education at the University of Melbourne. I majored in Developmental Psychology and completed a Research Project on the Benefits of Play in Learning in a Primary School setting. I have also commenced a Bachelor of Social Science with a major in Child Developmental Psychology. Since graduating I have worked in various schools on the Mornington Peninsula, teaching in particular in early years classrooms, including Multi-age (P-2) in an International Bachelorette School. Whilst on maternity leave I kept my teacher hat on by tutoring students both at inter-vention and extension level across a variety of subjects. During this time I coached two students in preparation for Scholarships for highly respected secondary schools; both children achieving their goal and acceptance into their preferred college. I am interested in challenging my students to become lifelong learners and believe this can be fostered through play and exploration at any age, stage and grade, in a multidisciplinary approach. I also believe it takes a village to raise a child: as such our children will benefit from the varying expertise of our teaching team. My own love of learning can be credited to the nurturing and support of some brilliant teachers during my early years; I hope to mentor my students in this way too.
When I graduated Boneo Primary School in 1996, under the tutelage of Gary Cooper, I knew
my time at Boneo had set me up to achieve some great things in life! I have nothing but fond
memories of my time at Boneo as a student. There were ghosts in classrooms (Mr Bull),
Astronauts (Mrs Hesketh), dead snakes in toilets, and spiders living in pianos (Mr Kelsaw).
These experiences and tall-tales have had a lasting effect on me and the way that I have ap-
proached my teaching. After attending Rosebud SC, I worked as a landscaper and builder
until I couldn’t handle the early mornings and cold anymore. I moved to Warrnambool and
completed my Bachelor of Education, where the first lesson that I learnt on my rounds,
‘teaching is all about relationships’, has become the bedrock of my professional practice. Over
the last 8 years I have taught from years 1 – 6 at Boneo and am very proud of everything our
little community has achieved. I’m looking forward to continuing to help develop our communi-
ty into the future and adding to my 20+ years of cricket for the Mighty Boneo CC (who were
unfortunately relegated this season for the first time in 42 years!).
I am a well-seasoned member of the Boneo Primary School community as I was lucky enough
to first attend as a student and now as a teacher. After completing my Bachelor of Education
at Monash University I then secured a position at Boneo Primary School where I continue to
be blown away by the beautiful families who attend. The school may have structurally
changed over the years; however, its culture has remained incredibly positive and I feel
extremely privileged to be a part of its continued growth. I believe that teaching is an art-form
in shaping young minds academically socially and emotionally. I am a big believer that every
contact made with a student is a lifelong memory, therefore I endeavour to create and embed
positive memories to be remembered by. I hope all the students at Boneo Primary school
leave with the same amazing memories as I did from our unique school.

Our very special SAKG aprons have arrived - they look fantastic! Students from grade 3 proudly wore the aprons as they cooked up
a feast in the kitchen last Friday. There are still some more available from the office ($20) for any student in grades 3 or 4 who have
not yet made a purchase.
Orecchiette Pasta with Basil Pesto
To start the orecchiete pasta we needed to collect flour, eggs, salt. These ingredients we mixed together to make what felt like play
dough, but it was just dough. The dough was rolled into a sausage and then cut into 1cm bits. Each bit was then rolled into a ball
and shaped into a tiny little bowl and boiled in water. Meanwhile at another table the pesto was being made out of fresh basil grown
at Boneo Primary School, baby tomatoes, oil, pine nuts and cheese.
Choc chip and Oatmeal Cookies
All the ingredients were placed into a mixing bowl by very eager students. These included flour, chocolate chips, oats, melted but-
ter, white and brown sugar and eggs. These delicious ingredients were mixed together and shaped into balls and placed onto the
tray.
