from the Minister for the Department of Economic Development

Welcome to Employment and Skills 2017, the leading careers event on the Isle of Man designed to help you discover new career opportunities in the public, private and third sector. Today’s event presents a perfect opportunity for organisations from all sectors to showcase their work on the Isle of Man and to help you make an informed decision on your future, be it a career choice, a new role or to enhance your skills.

In the current economic climate, events of this nature are imperative for the Isle of Man, and I would like to thank local employers for their continued support. In the past, the support from local employers has been very positive and the event has provided an excellent opportunity for people to come along to find out about jobs on the Island and the range of help and support that is available to them.

The Isle of Man Government strives to secure a sustainable future for our Island. By supporting economic growth we aim to build an Island with a wealth of opportunity for all the Isle of Man’s hardworking residents. Not only this, we are committed to providing high quality education and vocational skills development, thereby supporting both personal and economic development.

I hope you will take the opportunity today to explore the event and make the most of the support available to help you make your choice and equip you with the knowledge you need to either start or further your career.

from the Chief Executive Officer for the Department of Education and Children

I would particularly like to thank all those from the business community who through their participation in this event are ensuring that you get first hand insight into the changing world of work and I also thank them for their time today which is essential to make this event a success. Their efforts are very much appreciated by both the Departments of Economic Development and Education and Children. The diverse range of organisations and expertise represented here underlines the strength of our economy and those attending should capitalise on the knowledge and insight available throughout the day.

Despite global challenges and the rapid pace of economic change the Island’s economy continues to grow while the Island’s population needs also to continue to change. As a result there are many opportunities provided by emerging businesses and established economic sectors such as Engineering, Manufacturing, Retail, Construction, Social Care, Banking and Finance, Insurance and Tourism. I would encourage all those who attend to make the most of the opportunities provided to find out more about the career options and choices that may be available and be of interest to you. This event is also an opportunity for you to discover what skills and training employers really value and for you to link what your own educational aspirations and goals are to employment opportunities represented here.

I am sure that you will have a positive visit that enables you to discover much more about the many employment opportunities that are available. Employment and Skills 2017 is here to help you with your career choice and provide you with information to better inform you about an important life decision.

Have a successful, informative and positive visit and enjoy the day!

Professor Ronald BarrChief Executive Officer, Department of Education and Children

WELCOME

6

Welcome to the 2017 Employment and Skills event promoted by Isle of Man Government and sponsored by the Department of Education and Children and

the Department of Economic Development.

This important annual event has been designed to provide you with information on the many varied career and employment opportunities that are available to you on-island.

Today’s event also emphasises Government’s continued focussed commitment to ensure people of all ages have an informed understanding of the many varied job possibilities that the island’s dynamic and ever changing economy has to offer.

Welcome to the students from the Isle of Man’s Secondary Schools!

So, what are you here for?

Employment & Skills 2017 is a chance for you to think about your future and perhaps to start asking yourself some of the big questions about what you want to do in your life. This could be challenging to you, it may be a bit confusing at times and you may not come up with a single answer or direction, but that’s OK. The point is that you have some time to think about possibilities and these ideas could then be developed further through opportunities in school (such as work experience, visiting speakers, finance education projects, careers lessons, mock interviews etc) and in discussion with your friends and people at home.

Are you ready to think about yourself?

The first element of trying to think about a suitable career is knowing and understanding yourself. If you don’t know what you like or don’t like, what your skills are, what your strengths are or where your interests lie, then you need to use the event to help you reflect on these things. When you have talked with the people at the different stands, you need to decide if ‘Yes – this could be me’ or ‘No – I’m not cut out to do that?’ as well as thinking about the more difficult question, ‘Why do I feel that way?’

Are you ready to think about possible careers?

The second element is supporting your developing understanding of the world of work and checking out the opportunities that exist both on and away from the Isle of Man. Questions to think about as you walk around stands could include some of the following:Why do some people choose jobs with lower pay? What other rewards do jobs offer? How do different qualifications give me a choice of jobs? Which jobs will be beyond my reach if I don’t get certain qualifications? How can some people work for themselves and employ other people? How transferrable are the skills from one job to another? If you don’t know much about the opportunities that exist, use the careers stands to find out as much as you can about the world of work. You need to plan the questions that you want to ask the people on the stands, ask them and then listen to what they have to say because each of them is an expert in that particular career or area of employment.

Do you have you a plan A and B? (….and possibly C)

The third element is about narrowing down the choices and making decisions, identifying what you need to do to enter a specific career, finding out how you get qualified and how you might get some experience. It is also about getting good advice and making plans, including at least a ‘plan B’ just in case things don’t work out in the way you expect the first time. Remember there are many excellent opportunities for young people to find exciting and rewarding careers, in the Isle of Man and beyond. Please make the most of your visit to Employment & Skills 2017.

Jan GimbertSchool Improvement Adviser, Department of Education and Children

Questions you may wish to ask employers...

• What qualifications are required (if any) for this job?

• What skills and knowledge do you like people to have?

• What skills would be useful to this role? (getting on with people, taking on different roles in a team, IT skills, creativity etc)

• What do employers expect from young people?

• If I go to university, will it help me get a job in this industry?

• What would a good CV look like to an employer in your industry for someone aged 16/18/21 just leaving full time education?

• Does work experience help?

• How could I get some work experience?

• What is the salary like for people who have different levels of qualifications and experience?

• Are there opportunities to travel, or move off the Island?

• If I want to stay on the Island, what would be my prospects for promotion?

• What training would be available to me in this job/career? Would it be in-house, day release or night classes?

• Are there any opportunities to gain recognised, work-based qualifications in this role?

The ACE Programme was launched by the Engineering and Manufacturing Sector and the Department of Economic Development in February 2008 to increase the number of local people with the skills this Sector needs over the coming years. The project has three aims:

(i) To change people’s perception of engineering and manufacturing

(ii) To make people more aware of what the Engineering and Manufacturing Sector on our Island comprises and does, and

(iii) To ensure students and parents see the Engineering and Manufacturing Sector as a viable, rewarding and long-term career option here on our Island.

To help deliver these aims, a series of engineering lessons were developed for School Years 6 through to 11. These covered the 33 Primary Schools and 5 Secondary Schools and about 240 lessons were delivered each year. Members of the Sector and the then Engineering and Manufacturing Sector Skills champion, Adrian Harrison, delivered the lessons. The lessons lifted elements out of the school curriculum to ‘bring them alive’ while including topics to explain what engineering and manufacturing is all about across our Island and how school subjects relate to a career within the Sector.

During 2017 the ACE Programme has been revamped to include more interactions for students with people employed at all levels and stages of their careers in the Engineering & Manufacturing Sector and will now involve the IT Sector in some of the Programme in recognition of the growing use of technology within the Engineering and Manufacturing Sector. The revamped Programme involves a large-scale event each year, with the 2017 event bringing over the BLOODHOUND SSC Show Car & Team including the pilot Wing Commander Andy Green OBE in September 2017. This event was aimed at all Year 7 students across the island. The next element will see Year 8 students participating in lessons with the Smallpiece Trust early in the New Year. The final element is aimed at Year 9 students and will see these students attending sessions with Industry Ambassadors, from both Engineering and IT, who will speak about their careers to highlight the many pathways there are into careers in the industries.

Sector representatives also attend each Secondary School ‘options’ evenings for Years 9 & 11; again to ensure students and their parents are aware of the Sector and how they can go about securing employment within it.We also hold a presentation and discussion with Years 12/13 (Sixth Form) to help students understand the options post A level via the College, Universities and work.

The Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering Course, run as a partnership with UCM, continues to evolve with the considerable support of both the Department of Education and Children and Department of Economic Development to meet the Sector’s growing skills need for machine operators. The scheme’s aim is to produce well-rounded, skilled people suitable for all companies and sees both College and Sector staff deliver the course syllabus. The course is the first place companies look for the employment of machine operators. Students mature from the 2 year course with a recognised qualification which can then be built on during employment with a company in the subsequent years leading to a machine operator role appointment. It is then down to the individual if they wish to develop further with companies

supporting this via a career development plan. The course is run at the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre on Peel Road Douglas, which houses state of the art equipment and machinery matching that in Sector Companies. The course runs each September and can accommodate up to 36 students per year. We have developed close links with the Careers Guidance Service and Department of Education and Children to ensure that everyone who can provide careers guidance/support understands that the sector is a vibrant, clean and prosperous environment to work in, offering stimulating, varied and rewarding careers for both males and females with a variety of skills. This covers all skills types and not just those traditionally associated with engineering and manufacturing such as designers and machinists. We also have a supporting cast of skilled people such as IT, Human Resources, financers, logistics, quality, planners, etc. Many Secondary School students have visited our companies (during work experience in Year 10 and also in specific site visits) to see what goes on and to experience the modern, clean and friendly environment we work in. We would invite other people interested in a career with us to have a look around our facilities. We offer Work Experience placements during Year 10 for all Secondary Schools and also for those beyond Year 10 either in School, College or University. Work experience is an ideal way for students to see what we do, and understand the types of jobs undertaken in companies and the skills/qualifications needed to secure such roles. In addition, it allows companies to see what a student’s capabilities are, which is a very powerful opportunity for students to be able to display their personal qualities which often cannot be relayed on a CV or in interview. In conjunction with the Department of Economic Development we have in the past created bespoke training courses to help development skills for people who are or may have been employed and now wish a career change, or those not suitably qualified after leaving school. We will consider developing such training, again as and when needed. If would like to see what may be involved in becoming employed within the Sector, why not come and see some of the Sector Companies in the Royal Hall or check out our website www.engineeringiom.com for more information. You can find us on Facebook too!
