“It’s a little bit up in the air at the

moment depending on what happens in the rest of the week but he’s come

back in what appears to be great shape. I think he’s going a lot better than he

was when he won the Millennium, which he’ll need to be because everybody

else has improved as well, but at this stage we’re pretty happy with him.

“He’s grown a little bit taller, not a lot taller, but he’s about 40 kilos

heavier than he was, so he’s thickened out and muscled up. He’s not an

overly tall horse but he’s a very strong horse.”

Freedman said the stable hasn’t got a particular grand final race set

for Prime Star, but they will let him work his way into the big feature races

and choose where to send him based on his form.

Given the current restrictions preventing horses from travelling out of

Victoria, it’s also difficult for all

trainers to plan spring programs

with no set date on when the

state borders will reopen.

“We don’t target a particular

race with these sorts of horses,”

Freedman said. “We’ll put them

on a program that will allow

them to reach one of those

top quality races if their form

warrants it.

“We don’t select a Randwick Guineas and say ‘we want to run him

in that’, we’ll let him find his way there but we’ll make sure he gets his

opportunity to get there if he’s good enough.

“We’re also not sure how far he will run.

“He may be best up to 1200 metres, he may reach 1600 (metres), so

we’re not completely sure how far he will run and we’re still finding that

out about him. Given that he’s only had four starts in his life, it’s hard to

know exactly.

“Certainly interstate travel at the moment to Victoria is problematic

because while horses can travel to Victoria, they can’t come back to New

South Wales at this stage, so that makes it difficult for us to take horses there.”

Ole Kirk, the nephew of champion mare Black Caviar (Bel Esprit), is

coming off the back of a 900-metre trial at Rosehill on Tuesday, where he

finished sixth under a hard hold from Tommy Berry after settling at the tail

of the field before running on well.

Berry was pleased with the colt’s performance in the trial and said

he was looking forward to seeing what kind of heights he can reach this

spring.

“He wasn’t there to do a heap,” Berry told Racing NSW. “He’s about the

same height but he’s definitely stronger than he was.

“I think he was unlucky not to win a couple more last preparation and

I think he can match up against a nice crop of three-year-olds.’’

Randwick on July 28, leading the seven-

runner field under James McDonald and scoring by an official margin of

five lengths.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained son of Not A Single

Doubt (Redoute’s Choice), who at the time of writing was the $4.60

second favourite behind Ryan’s Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) runner-

up Kumasi (Snitzel), is likely to stick to the sprint trips this spring and

assistant trainer Annabel Neasham believes the colt has developed into a

very nice three-year-old.

“He’s going very well,” Neasham told ANZ Bloodstock News. “He had

a three week break and he’s matured.

“He’s quite forward coming into this and he’s really developed

physically from two to three.

“His win at Rosehill was very good. They went quick and he quickened

off that hot tempo in a race that was set up for the back markers, which

made the win more impressive.

“Certainly the way that tracks are playing in Sydney at the moment

it may well be in our favour to have a horse on speed and he’s drawn

beautifully in three. The main thing with him is just to have him where

he’s comfortable, he’s got to relax.

“I think he’s relaxed in his last two races which has enabled him to

finish off.”

Eduardo ready for Missile testIt has been almost two years since Eduardo (Host) burst onto the scene

as one of the most exciting up and coming horses among the sprinting

ranks, but a few issues caused the now seven-year-old to spend some time

on the sidelines and we are yet to see him reach his full potential.

However, it took just one run for new trainer Joe Pride, who is a proven

handler of mature aged sprinters with the likes of Terravista (Captain Rio)

and Ball Of Muscle (Dubawi),

to get Eduardo back into the

winner’s stall and this weekend

he will look to add the Missile

Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) to his CV.

Formerly trained by Sarah

Zschoke at Cranbourne, the son

of Host (Hussonet) was narrowly

beaten by subsequent Group 1

winner I Am Excited (Snitzel) in

the Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)

at just his fourth ever race start

back in October 2018.

He then comfortably took out the Caulfield Sprint (Gr 2, 1000m) at his

next start before heading for a break and returning to finish third behind

Booker (Written Tycoon) and Encryption (Lonhro) in the 2019 Oakleigh

Plate (Gr 1, 1100m).

Following that career-best performance, Eduardo placed in the Bel

Esprit Stakes (Listed, 1100m) and the McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) but

has failed to fire since.

Since moving to Pride’s stable at Warwick Farm, the gelding appears

to be as close to being back to his best as we have seen him in the last

12 months and the trainer is confident he can put up a bold showing at

Rosehill this weekend.

“Obviously he’s new to my stable but he’s adapted well to the change

of environment and the change in training regime and he’s in really good

order,” Pride told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“We are meeting some very good horses, in particular Melody Belle,

she’s a multiple Group 1 winner, but we’re up against her at the right time.

She’s first-up at a sprint trip and we’ve got the advantage of having had

that first-up run already.

“He lines up alright against these horses and he’s going to have to

improve a bit out of his first up run but I feel like there was improvement

in him and he’s made that.”

Pride said there are no specific target races in place for Eduardo and

that the stable will wait and see how he measures up on Saturday before

laying out a plan for the rest of the spring.

“We will feel our way through it,” Pride said. “If he went really well on

Saturday then there would be some genuine interest in this horse in some

of the bigger sprints and in which case we might just give him a little bit

freshen up.

“It’s all really dependent on what we see from him on Saturday.”

Rich Enuff readyfor second crop

Woodside Park Stud’s young sire Rich Enuff

(Written Tycoon) proved top of the ranks among

active first season Victorian stallions last season

and anticipation is building for his second group

of two-year-olds to race in the coming months.

Rich Enuff had seven individual winners,

headlined by Plutocrat, his first winner who later

went on to win the Tattersall’s Club Stakes (Listed,

1400m). Also of note is that he managed to better

the achievements of his own sire Written Tycoon

(Iglesia) with his first crop. Giving her full backing

to Rich Enuff is respected pedigree analyst Kristen

Manning. “I have been happy to recommend

Rich Enuff to my clients,” stated Manning. “I am

impressed not only by the horse, but also by the

depth of his pedigree. He is an easy stallion to

match up and I am delighted with my own colt by

him, so much so that my mare is paying a return

visit this spring.” Rich Enuff served 127 mares last

season and stands for $8,800 (inc GST) in 2020.

Veteran among two Missile runners for LeesKris Lees will have his bases covered for the first

Group race of the Sydney season, regardless

of whether the forecast rain arrives. The

Newcastle horseman, who finished last term as

the leading trainer in NSW with 193 winners,

has stable mainstay Le Romain (Hard Spun)

and the emerging Special Reward (Demerit) in

the Missile Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Rosehill on

Saturday. Showers are predicted in Sydney later

this week and while a heavy track will pose no

problems for Le Romain, Lees is not so sure

about Special Reward. "He has terrific form on

soft, although from his trials I would say he's not

going to be good on heavy ground," Lees said.

"I scratched him the other day with that testing

track. It looks like that could come back in (play)

with the forecast. But he's had another trial since

and this is a more suitable journey."

Ambitious spring sprint plans for TropeTrope (More Than Ready) will have his first start

for Julius Sandhu in Saturday’s Aurie's Star Stakes

(Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington with the trainer

hoping his new recruit can confirm his belief

that he is a genuine Group 1 sprinter. Sandhu

has two future targets in mind for the former

Team Hawkes galloper after the weekend, the

Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and the VRC

Sprint Classic (Gr 1, 1200m), which is run over the

same course and distance as Saturday's contest.

"I'll learn something about the horse, I'll find

out whether he can handle the straight and the

class. Hopefully he'll tick both boxes," Sandhu

said. "I'm very pleased where he's at. He's had a

relatively uninterrupted campaign. He's had two

jump-outs and he's travelled each time on wet

tracks. Flemington is a Soft 6 but with the weather

predicted it should be a Soft 7 at best which I think

will suit him."

Aurie return for Widgee TurfPatrick Payne is another hoping the rain falls

at Flemington this week before Widgee Turf

(Turffontein) makes his belated reappearance

in the Aurie's Star. The now seven-year-old, who

has not been seen in action since December last

year, has been nominated a number of times over

the past few weeks but looks set to finally be given

his chance. "It's no secret he likes getting his toe

in the ground, so we've just been waiting for a bit

more give in the ground and with the rain forecast

this week he'll get that at Flemington," Payne told

Racing.com. "He's definitely forward, he's been

up for a while, so it wouldn't shock me if he ran a

race, he's forward enough to be in with a chance

for sure. He's better suited 1400-1600 metres

so I'm not expecting we'll see his best first-up

over 1200 metres though particularly down the

straight."

Cummings praises Brave’s straight recordJames Cummings will give Home Of The

Brave (Starspangledbanner) a chance to make

amends for his last-gasp defeat in the 2018

running of the Aurie’s Star when he lines up

on Saturday. Godolphin’s well-travelled nine-

year-old was chinned on the line when making

his Australian debut in the race two years ago

and although he is without a win in Melbourne,

Cummings has ear-marked this race as a target.

"In my entire arsenal, this horse is probably my

best straight-track performer," the trainer told

Racing.com. "We are sending him to Melbourne

to take advantage of that. He's fresh and fiery

after an honest winter campaign and will be

sharp going into a race in which he made his

Australian debut two years ago. We're looking

at this race as an opportunity to make amends

for the one that got away. If he shows the form

I expect to see here, we will try to pick the eyes

out of the straight-track races at Flemington

over the spring.”

Savvy Lad primed for Flemington targetCo-trainer Trent Busuttin is hoping Savvy

Lad (Savabeel) can break through for his first

Australian win when the four-year-old contests

Saturday’s Rubaroc Handicap (1410m) at

Flemington. The New Zealand import finished

third behind Mystery Shot (Shooting To Win)

and Wicklow Town (Canford Cliffs) over 1400

metres at Caulfield last month, an effort which

pleased connections. “Savvy Lad was unlucky

first-up, he got beaten by a couple of smart

horses, but he ran third after copping a severe

check at the 600 metres and was only beaten

by a length and a bit,” Busuttin, who trains in

partnership with Natalie Young, told RSN927.

“They were good horses that finished in front

of him. He is dropping back to a (BenchMark)

70 (on Saturday) so I would say he will be very

hard to beat on a big Flemington track.”

Options open for RascalArchie Alexander is yet to lock in a kick-off point

for Young Rascal’s (Intello) spring campaign,

however the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) remains

as the gelding’s number one target. "William

Haggas, who knows the horse better than me

because he trained him for the past two or three

years, says that I would be wasting my time

running him over 1400 to 1600 metres - he's not

sharp enough," Alexander told Racing.com.

"When he won the N.E. Manion Cup over 2400

metres in March he hadn't run since the Hong

Kong Vase at Sha Tin in December. He's very

clean winded, he had four weeks off when he

came to us and he acts and looks like a horse that

didn't need a lot of time off. From there he will

race second-up in either the JRA Cup, Turnbull

Stakes or Bart Cummings and then contest the

Caulfield Cup, third-up as his main aim."

Nonconformist eyeing Caulfield CupGroup 2 winner Nonconformist (Rebel Raider)

took his first step on a path which his trainer

Grahame Begg hopes will lead to the Caulfield

Cup when the four-year-old lined up in an

800-metre jump-out at Sandown yesterday. "It

was just a comfortable jump-out as it's the first

time that he's been able to work on grass since

his last start," Begg told Racing.com. "He'll follow

up again with a barrier trial at Caulfield in two

weeks before his first-up run on Memsie Stakes

Day at Caulfield." While Nonconformist will be

nominated for the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

at Caulfield on August 29, Begg said the gelding

is likely to contest another race on the card. "We'll

probably kick him off in the handicap over 1400

metres and let him build into his preparation.

He'll be nominated for all the big races with the

ideal grand final being the Caulfield Cup."

Derby the goal for WertheimerA tilt at the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) could

be on the agenda of Wertheimer (Tavistock)

after the New Zealand import made a successful

Australian debut yesterday. Now trained by

Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, Wertheimer

landed a Cranbourne maiden over 1300 metres

as the well supported $3 favourite. "We'll try and

bring him through, maybe get him to Sandown

in a couple of weeks in a (Benchmark) 64, 1400

(metres) and see if he can make that grade,"

Young told Racing.com. "But we'll always have

the Derby in the back of our mind. He's out of a

Lonhro mare that we used to have in the stable

back in New Zealand a few years ago, so we'll

definitely go that path with him."

Williams' Irish team in doubt for carnivalThe tightening of Covid-19 restrictions in

Victoria could prevent the Lloyd Williams-

owned horses trained in Ireland by Joseph

O’Brien from travelling to this year’s carnival.

Five horses which carry the Williams silks

and are trained by O’Brien featured in the

nominations for the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m)

when they were published yesterday, but

the six-time Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)

winning owner yesterday cast doubt over their

participation. “Travelling now is a greater

consideration than it was 72 hours ago,”

Williams told Racing.com. “Melbourne next

few weeks will have a bearing on the future.

If there was any concern for staff travelling, I

would not allow my group of horses to come.”

Inglis Ready2Race entries closing soonWith over 200 entries already confirmed,

the 2020 renewal of the Inglis Ready2Race

Sale looks certain to be the strongest yet – in

terms of quality of both horses and vendors.

Stallions represented amongst an exciting

group of first season sires include the likes

of American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile),

Capitalist (Written Tycoon), Flying Artie (Artie

Schiller), Star Turn (Star Witness) and Winning

Rupert (Written Tycoon). There is also plenty

of strength to the group of proven sires set to

be featured in the catalogue, including Fastnet

Rock (Danehill), Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s

Choice), Pierro (Lonhro), Savabeel (Zabeel)

and Zoustar (Northern Meteor). “We are on

track to offer a catalogue of incredible strength

for the sale, particularly in terms of the stallion

power,” Inglis general manager of bloodstock

sales and marketing Sebastian Hutch said,

ahead of Friday’s 5pm deadline for entries

to be made. To submit an entry for the Inglis

Record year for QTIS bonusesRacing Queensland’s breeding incentive

schemes have enjoyed record-breaking years

with more than $13.7 million paid through

QTIS and QBRED during 2019/20. Having

introduced a range of enhancements over

the past year, including QTISx and QBRED

For Life, RQ set new benchmarks. With QTISx

providing bonuses on black-type and feature

races for Queensland thoroughbreds for the

first time, Outback Barbie (Spirit Of Boom)

saluted in the inaugural race by securing

victory in the Keith Noud Handicap (Listed,

1200m). More than ten individual QTISx

winners were crowned throughout 2019/20

including Rothfire (Rothesay) and Tyzone

(Written Tycoon). Not surprisingly, Rothfire

was the leading two-year-old QTIS earner,

collecting $133,500 in bonuses including a

$100,000 QTIS yearling sale voucher for his

victory in the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

“I think people are starting to realise just how

good a scheme QTIS really is,” Thoroughbred

Breeders Queensland Association president

Basil Nolan said. “The introduction of QTISx

provides further opportunities at Group and

Listed level including breeders’ bonuses which

are very important."

First winner for team KeysKen Keys bagged his first winner in partnership

with his daughter Kasey when Clean Acheeva

(Anacheeva) struck at Cranbourne yesterday.

The six-year-old did just enough under Mark

Zahra to hold on from the fast-finishing Lunar

Flare (Fiorente) and take out the De Bortoli

Wines Fillies and Mares BM70 Handicap

(2046m) as a $13 chance. "He (Zahra) made the

62 kilograms not a big a problem. Full credit

to the horse, she's been going well, things

just haven't panned out," the veteran trainer

told Racing.com. "We will keep pushing on

(with her) somewhere, she will be around the

78-rating horse now so we will find something."

Of training with his daughter, Keys added: “It

puts the energy back into it, the enthusiasm,

which is great."

Neindorf to remain in VictoriaSouth Australian apprentice Lachlan Neindorf

has set himself a lofty goal after deciding to

remain in Victoria. Neindorf finished fifth in

the South Australian Jockeys' Premiership last

season, an achievement which resulted in his

switch to the stable of Anthony Freedman.

"I was really happy with how I went last season,

I got a lot of support, even from Victorian

trainers that were sending their horses to

South Australia," Neindorf told Racing.com.

"Obviously I was the benefit of circumstances

with a lot of the really good Victorian jockeys

unable to come across for the Adelaide

Carnival, but I was proud of what I achieved

and I feel I made the most of my opportunities.

My goal this season is to finish in the top five

for the Victorian apprentices. I want to knuckle

down, travel as much as I can and build a

bigger network with the trainers over here and

hopefully that leads to plenty of winners."

Queensland adopts whip penalty templateNew penalty guidelines for excessive use of the

whip are to be introduced in Queensland.

The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission

yesterday announced that from Saturday

stewards would have a template to impose fines

and suspensions for whip breaches, along the

same lines as in Victoria, where stewards have

worked off a template since the new season

began. "These new guidelines will provide clear

penalties for breaches of the whip rules," QRIC

chief steward Peter Chadwick told Racing.com.

"This will assist in providing greater consistency

to the penalties applied and it'll also ensure that

riders are well aware of the potential penalties

VRC maintains hope for carnival crowdsVictoria Racing Club chairman Neil Wilson

is still hoping minimal crowds can attend the

Melbourne spring carnival and the club is

making plans around this scenario. Wilson

said the VRC had been working on a number

of contingencies in response to the Covid-19

situation but they had the advantage of

Flemington being a huge package of land to

accommodate large numbers of people. "In

terms of the members, the public and the

corporates it's less likely, but we are being as

receptive as we can to accommodate whatever

we are allowed to in terms of regulations of that

time," Wilson said on Melbourne's RSN radio

on Tuesday. "Four weeks ago we were planning

for small numbers of people back to the track.

Stage four has come into play, we are very

grateful we can continue racing and things have

changed. There's been an enormous amount of

configurations which are possible for us from

zero crowds to 50,000. With stage four, that's

less likely, but we're working on the basis things

can change and we could have crowds at the

smaller end."

NEW ZEALAND

Vaughan duo kick-off spring preparationsLisa Vaughan is on the hunt this season to secure

an elusive stakes victory with seven-year-old

Shirley Maude (Fully Fledged). Having placed

in the Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at just

her second career start and finished runner-up

in the White Robe Lodge Weight For Age (Gr

3, 1600m) in February, Vaughan is hoping the

mare can go one better this season. “Each year

she has just gone from strength-to-strength,

we have been really lucky with her,” Vaughan

said. “Hopefully this season she will be in form

too.” Vaughan is looking forward to kicking

off Shirley Maude’s preparation at Wingatui

on Friday in the Busy Bee Cleaning Services

(1200m). “She is going well, her training has

been good. It is first-up so she will probably

need it as she is a wee bit older now.” Vaughan

will also line-up Southland Guineas (Listed,

1600m) placegetter Asathought (So You Think)

on Friday in the Busy Bee Cleaning Services

Maiden (1600m). “She is stronger again,” the

trainer continued. “She has done well over the

Covid lockdown. She has strengthened up and

time is going to be her best friend.”

Oaks winner pleases in RuakakaShaune Ritchie was beaming after Jennifer

Eccles’ (Rip Van Winkle) 1050-metre trial at

Ruakaka on Tuesday. He was delighted to see

last season’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m)

winner relax in her heat and run on well to

finish fourth against a quality line-up. “We are

delighted with her,” said Ritchie, who trains

in partnership with Colm Murray. “Jason

(Waddell, jockey) is at his getting ready weight,

so the mare was probably giving a little weight

away to some key horses. The Bostonian is a

genuine Group 1 sprinter in Australia and Dawn

Patrol is probably one of the quickest horses at

Cambridge, so for her to trial as nicely as she

did in that quality of field was very good to see.

Jason’s comments right after the trial were that

‘she is right back where we need her to be’.”

Wyndspelle on paradeGroup 1 winner Wyndspelle (Iffraaj) will be on

parade at the Hawera racecourse on Saturday

ahead of his debut season at stud. The son of

Iffraaj (Zafonic) will be on show to the public

between races two and three, with breeders

encouraged to speak with Grangewilliam Stud

principal Marc Corcoran on the day about the

discounted fee on offer and the limited number

of lifetime breeding rights available. Breeders

will also get a chance to view Wyndspelle in

the Waikato as part of the gavelhouse.com

stallion parades when he is presented at Seaton

Park on August 22. Wyndspelle will stand at

Grangewilliam Stud in 2020 in partnership

with Jen Campin Bloodstock for NZ$7,500 (plus

GST).

Five for Shalaa The good week for Shalaa (Invincible Spirit)

continued when King Shalaa (2 c ex Baki by

Turtle Bowl) made a winning debut in a maiden

over a mile at La Teste de Buch in France

yesterday. The Fancois Rohaut-trained colt

scored by a length and a half as the 5-2 favourite

to provide Shalaa with his fifth individual

winner, a day after the filly Cream Of The Crop

got off the mark. Shalaa stands at Arrowfield for

a fee of $33,000 (inc. GST) in 2020.

Ventura Tormenta among four added to all-star Phoenix line-upPrix Robert Papin (Gr 2, 1200m) winner

Ventura Tormenta (Acclamation) is one of

four juveniles to have been supplemented for

Sunday's Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (Gr 1, 6f )

at a cost of €20,000. A total of 14 entries were

made for the Curragh contest where Ventura

Tormenta is in line to once again face Norfolk

Stakes (Gr 2, 5f ) winner The Lir Jet (Prince

Of Lir), who he narrowly beat at Chantilly

last time. Last week’s Molecomb Stakes (Gr

3, 5f ) winner Steel Bull (Clodovil) was also

supplemented for the top-level contest and is

set to carry the colours of new owner Chantal

Regalado-Gonzalez. Aidan O'Brien has five

potential runners at this stage, with Giorgio

Vasari (Air Force Blue) a notable entrant,

having also been added following his victory

at Naas on Monday.

Group 1 stallion Hat Trick dies at stud in BrazilChampion Japanese miler Hat Trick (Sunday

Silence) has died aged 19 at Haras Springfield

in Brazil, the publication Turf Diario has

reported. Bred by Oiwake Farm, Hat Trick

was at his very best in 2005 when claiming

both the Mile Championship (Gr 1, 1600m) at

Kyoto and the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m).

Hat Trick was to spend nearly a decade in

Kentucky, firstly at Walmac Farm, and he

made a swift start by siring French champion

juvenile and now stallion Dabirsim. He

moved to Gainesway in the 2012 breeding

season and also produced the likes of Jamaica

Handicap (Gr 1, 9f ) winner King David and

Bright Thought, who blitzed the San Luis Rey

Stakes (Gr 2, 12f ) at Santa Anita. Hat Trick,

who was sold to South America in 2017, is

reported to have died in his box shortly after

covering a mare on Monday.
