WHEN rower Jeremy Mc-Grath missed out on his firstopportunity to become a Par-alympian, he knew straightaway he wouldn’t let his sec-ond chance pass him by.
“At last year’s worldchampionships there wereeight Paralympic spots upfor grabs out of 12 and wenarrowly missed out, com-ing ninth,” the 22-year-oldsaid.
“Being able to come backthis year and not only qual-ify but also win the interna-
tional para regatta ... wasunreal. I felt such relief and asense of redemption.”
McGrath and his teammates Brock Ingram, Davin-ia Lefroy and Kathleen Mur-doch alongside Coxswain JoBurn made history at thequalification meet in Italy inApril as they became thefirst Australian team toqualify for the Paralympicsin the Legs, Trunk and ArmsMixed Coxed Four class.
An Arden Anglican Schoolalumni who graduated in2012, McGrath was bornwithout his tibia and decided
to amputate his right legbelow the knee when he was16 in order to use a morestreamlined prosthesis.
After joining the Mac-quarie University rowingteam, McGrath quickly dis-covered his talent for thesport and within just twoyears he was representingAustralia at the 2014 worldchampionships.
McGrath is also an occu-pational therapy student atSydney University.
He hopes to one day helpother people with a disabilityfind a love of sport.
