NAIFA-DALLAS PROGRAMThursday | March 24, 2016 | Prestonwood Country Club

NAIFA-Dallas and our 2015-2016 Program Sponsor are proud to present:

Practice Management Panel: Surviving and Thriving in the Business with Sales Ideas

Many of you have asked for it so we are bringing it to you this month – SALES IDEAS! Join us as we have an incredibly talented group of individuals share with us sales ideas they are using to sell more insurance and help more clients. We will have each of these presenters share a ’sales idea snippet’, then open it up for a Q&A at the end. This should be a great time to stimulate your thinking and to provide you with practical help that you can use IMMEDIATELY in your practice.

PANELIST: Mary Lyons is a personal economic strategist at Personal Economics Group (PEG). A top five producer –nationally – for her broker dealer, she built her business through networking and referrals. Her success revolves around a key point: she specializes in teaching her clients how money really works. Mary helps her clients understand what financial institutions do with their money – and then teaches her clients how to use the same processes and products for their own benefit. She educates her clients how to use products to create advantages for themselves. Mary

has built lasting relationships with her clients by focusing on doing what is best for her clients in every situation. Her philosophy is simple and non-negotiable. She creates financial plans based on strategies verified by an economic model and does not endorse any particular products. Mary graduated with honors from the University of Texas. She lives in Dallas with her husband, Mike, two children, and their two dogs, Havana and Henri. She attends Church of the Incarnation.

PANELIST: Danny O’Connell, MBA is a partner at Benefit Resource Group in Dallas. He is an eight-year MDRT member with six Court of the Table and five Top of the Table honors. He has served on numerous committees for MDRT and currently serves as Chair of the Program Committee for Top of the Table and is the Secretary of NAIFA-Dallas. O’Connell has served as Fox News Radio Contributor regarding healthcare reform and has over 30 articles on industry topics published in the last four years. In 2014, he was recognized by NAIFA’s Advisor Today magazine as one of their Four under

Forty in the insurance industry. He was the 2015 NAIFA-Dallas YAT of the Year as well as being recognized by NAIFA nationally as a YAT of the Week. Danny just completed LILI and was elected NAIFA-Texas Trustee. He has spoken on the main platform at both the NAIFA National meeting as well as the CARIAFA international meeting. Danny will celebrate his tenth wedding anniversary with his wife, Kate, this August; they have four children. He enjoys following his Sooners.

PANELIST: Ryan Soulier, CFP, CLU is a Certified Financial Planner professional (CFP®) and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®) with a decade of experience helping his clients reach their personal and professional goals. Ryan recently moved to MassMutual to build a more comprehensive financial planning practice. This young and energetic veteran is opening his own practice in Denton in the fall of this year. Past management and leadership roles will aid in his success as a leader in the Denton community and surrounding areas. This move will allow Soulier to contribute to the

financial success of his home town community while affording him more time with his lovely wife, Maggie, of fifteen years and two beautiful daughters. Ryan is an active member of Denton Bible Church and the Marine Corps League of Denton County.

MARCH 2016 | FAN | 6

Such a busy start to 2016. Congratulations to John Norman, winner of the 2015 O. C. Jackson Hall of Fame Award and Karl Drescher winner of 2015

Advisor of the Year. We celebrated both of these fine members at our Annual Awards dinner January 14th.

Please see the report from Tallie O. Young on our annual Texas State Conference & Annual Business Meeting held in Houston February 5th and 6th (see pages 10-11). Congratulations to our own Danny O’Connell for completing LILI – Leadership in Life Institute. LILI is a six-month leadership course offered to NAIFA members interested in further developing their leadership skills and contributing their talents to NAIFA in some way. NAIFA and LILI are about building stronger leaders, promoting advocacy and protecting our industry and our careers.

Congratulations also to Danny O’Connell for his election as a Trustee for NAIFA-Texas. He will begin this position in July, and at the same time he takes his position as President-Elect of NAIFA-Dallas. He will be serving both the local and state associations at the same time which will be a real WIN-WIN for both organizations for sharing

ideas and keeping abreast of the latest developments in all levels of our federation.

Advocacy is one of the most important things NAIFA does for our careers and our industry. The 2016 NAIFA National Congressional Conference takes place in Washington D.C. on May 24th and 25th. NAIFA has a member in every elected official’s district in the United States. The annual “Fly-In” Congressional Conference is our opportunity to share the value of our products with our elected officials. Our products make a difference in Americans’ lives, and it is important for us to let our officials know:

75 million American families turn to life insurance companies and trusted agents and advisors to protect their financial futures with retirement plans, life insurance, annuities, long-term care, and disability income insurance. For more information, go to www.securefamily.org.

Sharing the value of our products protects our clients and our careers. Get on board!! Go to Washington D.C. Donate to the PAC – Political Action Committee.

As we enter an election year, our time and money CAN make a difference in protecting our industry and our livelihood! Let’s make a difference!

NAIFA-Texas 2016 Conference and Annual Business MeetingFebruary 5-6, 2016 | Houston, TXTallie O. Young, RFC, LUTCF – National Committeewoman

Going to the State Conference this year was like an episode of speed dating – fast and furious, taking only 25 hours from beginning to end. I don’t know if anyone found a “match”, but there was a lot of information and networking happening.

As always, NAIFA-Dallas had a good showing. In attendance were Cheri Stanwick, President; Ruth Shannon, President-Elect; Danny O’Connell, Secretary; Tallie O. Young, National Committeewoman; Lane Boozer, Immediate Past President, NAIFA-Texas; Brad Campbell, Government Relations chair; Bob Yarborough, YAT co-chair; Randy Robertson; and Karen True, Executive Vice President.

There were four candidates running for Trustee. The three elected were Danny O’Connell, NAIFA-Dallas, Kyle Linder, NAIFA-Houston, and Cindy Rivas, NAIFA-El Paso. Running, but not elected Michael Aguirre, NAIFA-San Antonio. Running for the NAIFA-Texas Secretary/Treasurer position were Hollie Gandy Donohue, NAIFA-Amarillo and Douglas Richards. Holly won.

Jules Gaudreaux, President of NAIFA-National was in attendance. He described what’s happening with NAIFA nationally. We have an advisory committee of members from all over the nation who are putting together a new strategic plan, called NAIFA 2020. We are at the final stage of adopting. Jules pointed out we cannot survive on member dues alone. We currently have only 37,000 dues-paying members. We have recruited 8,000 new (not yet paying) members. In order to support and promote advocacy, we must find new ways to support the organization. He reminded us that NAIFA is the ONLY organization that represents the agents (US!) on the state as well as the national level. Historically, we have protected our industry by having good relationships with legislators. We need to continue to do so.

In fact, if you have not already registered for the National Fly-in to Washington D.C. on May 24th and 25th, I encourage you to do so. It is an incredible experience to visit with our national legislators in their offices. They care that we care about our clients and protecting the products that are helping our clients and their families and businesses.

Britain outlawed commissions a few years ago. Today, they only have 50,000 people left in the industry. It has been a disaster for their economy. NO ONE is saving. They are in desperate need of advisors. This could happen in the United States if we do not ACT!!!

What can we do? Work with “regular people”. Let our companies know how important NAIFA is to us! Ask AALU and MDRT why they don’t back us and encourage them to do so.

To see more of your National president in action,

Google YouTube and see some of Jules @ DOL hearings.

Jules pointed out that NAIFA-Texas has provided a LOT of leadership nationally. NAIFA-Texas is one of the strongest in the nation, if not THE strongest in the nation. In 2025, NAIFA-Texas will be 100 years old.

NAIFA’s new Pilot Program has three corporate partners, AXA, Prudential, and Thrivent, whose agents are being automatically enrolled in NAIFA.

IFAPAC Report was presented by Rolando Barrera. NAIFA-Texas raised $155,666 for 2015. We were the third in the federation, with 564 contributors for 2015, down from 585 contributors for 2014. We currently only have 20% of our members as contributors. The goal is 35%. If you are not currently contributing to IFAPAC, please consider doing so. Eddie Tate, NAIFA-Fort Worth, won the IFAPAC award this year. Rodney Bogen, NAIFA-Austin, is replacing Eddie Tate, NAIFA-Fort Worth, on the IFAPAC committee.

Bill Montague, NAIFA-Dallas won the Membership Prize drawing for recruiting new members in 2015. Bill is consistently one of our best recruiters! Thanks Bill! Outgoing NAIFA-Texas Immediate President Lane Boozer was the longest serving member of the board, with 13 years. NAIFA-Texas Past President Alan Carl, NAIFA-El Paso received the Lifetime Achievement Award

The LILI program is stronger than ever. With the graduation of the 19th class, Texas graduated a total of 171 students, more than any other state. Ninety percent of our current NAIFA-Texas board are LILI graduates.

A couple of years ago, NAIFA-Texas was lucky, smart enough, etc. to hire Tim Von Kennell as our new CEO/CLO. He has done an absolutely awesome job! He hired Danielle Lobsinger as his “political machine”. She has coordinated over 12 grass roots legislative activities, one with Jeb Henserling. We were able to go to Congressmen in their backyards and tell them what we need. She also secured Lt. Governor Dan Patrick to come to the state convention. Monica Lopez has converted software programs to better address the budget requirements, assumed office management responsibilities with the departure of two other employees and trained additional employees. We have received 100% clean audit working with NAIFA’s CPAs. Since Tim took over, we have also held a successful legislative session and improved relations with Texas Department of Insurance. Membership for North Texas is up including the 900 pilot program members, but down 3.5% without them (previous years’ declines were 4-5%). The list goes on and on.

As you can see, your leaders are working hard to protect your paycheck! Please be sure to spread the word and encourage everyone you know in the business to JOIN NAIFA TODAY!

Ads are now being sold for the 2016 Membership Directory which will be mailed with the June issue of the Financial Advisor News (FAN).

Stephen Covey’s Habit #1:Put first things first. “This habit is about personal and time management. Management, remember, is clearly different from leadership.” Take the lead and meet with your legislators on behalf of your clients and your industry. Your ability to help your clients in this manner is worth prioritizing.

Stephen Covey’s Habit #2:Think win/win. “This is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions.” You win by being a part of the solution for the industry, and your clients win because you are helping to protect the current tax status of our industry products and, most importantly, your ability to serve your clients.

KAREN’S KORNERKaren H. True | Executive Vice President

I Dare You

As a kid, my best friend was Robbi Juday. Robbi lived down the street from me, and we were in the same grade at school. Robbi was smart, talented, a bit of a tomboy, and she

was gutsy, fearless. She was up for anything, especially if it involved a physical challenge.

Each summer we spent some time at my grandfather’s farm – climbing around in the barn, chasing chickens, swinging on grapevines, and pretending the pig sty was a secret hideout. (At this point, my grandfather no longer raised pigs, so it was cleaner than you might have first thought.)

On the road that ran in front of the house, there was a rickety wooden bridge and below, a creek bed which, in the heat of the Texas summers, had very little water. The world wasn’t as litigious back then, not as concerned about safety, so this bridge, like so many others in rural areas, had no railing.

One hot afternoon, we were sitting on the bridge, legs dangling over the edge, and admittedly bored. Robbi was very quiet, and I could tell that she was thinking, calculating, working on a plan. Suddenly, she turned to me and said, “Do you dare me to jump off this bridge?”

“Sure,” I said. “I dare you!”

I was joking She wasn’t. Next thing I knew, she was standing on the edge of the bridge preparing to jump.

“No! Wait a minute! Don’t do it!” I begged, imagining my friend’s mangled body in the shallow water and having to tell her parents, and mine, what happened.

My pleas were too late. She jumped, landing up to her knees in the mud below. I was aghast, speechless. But very impressed. Robbi was standing in the creek bed, splattered with mud and slime. She was doubled over with

laughter and obviously very proud of herself. It was a memorable moment, and amazing accomplishment, one that would become the stuff of legends – a tale retold for years to come.

In fact, from that point on, even when he could no longer remember her name, my grandfather would always ask me, “How’s that girl who jumped off the bridge?”

A dare is a challenge, a challenge to do something at hand; it’s having someone nudge you, taunt you, push you to take action to behave in some way that may seem out of the ordinary, to do something that requires effort and guts.

William Danforth (1870-1955), founder of the Ralston-Purina company, was a man of great character and accomplishments. In the early 1950s, he wrote a book called I Dare You. While the writing style and examples are dated, the message is as fresh and vital today as it was when the book was first published.

Danforth puts it this way– “I dare you to think bigger, act bigger, be bigger, and I promise you a richer and more exciting life if you do.”

Today, I dare you. I dare you to take a risk. Push yourself. Do more than you think you can. I dare you to be better today than you were yesterday and better tomorrow than you are today.

Think about it. What areas of your life and work need to be challenged? In what areas to you need to improve? Do you, or someone on your team, need a coach, an accountability partner to help you fulfill your potential? Do you need someone to hold your hand and kick your backside? If so, find that someone.

Work together to help you “think bigger, act bigger, be bigger” and achieve “a richer more exciting life.” I dare you.
