Twenty horses have been cross- entered in multiple races, accounting for a total of 192 pre- entered runners. Final declarations and the draw for all 14 races is Monday. And with the exception of Friday=s featured GI Breeders= Cup Distaff, which will accentuate quality over quantity, bettors can expect full fields. The GI Breeders= Cup Classic, to be aired in prime time by NBC at 8:35 p.m. Eastern Time, has attracted 13 pre-entries, including Janis Whitham=s defending champion Fort Larned (E Dubai) and the three horses that chased him home last year--Mucho Macho Man (Macho Uno), Flat Out (Flatter) and Ron the Greek (Full Mandate). Game On Dude (Awesome Again) is set for a third consecutive appearance in the $5-million test, having finished runner-up to Drosselmeyer (Distorted Humor) at Churchill Downs in 2011 before a disappointing seventh as the favorite last year when very little went according to script. The Bob Baffert stable will also be represented by Paynter (Awesome Again), who at this time last year was battling for his life and who seemed the unlikeliest of candidates to make this field. Those seasoned older horses will face a stern challenge from the cream of this year=s 3-year-old crop in the form of GI Belmont S. hero Palace Malice, a son of 2007 Classic hero Curlin, and Will Take Charge (Unbridled=s Song), who comes into the 10-furlong affair off turn-the-corner wins in the GI Travers S. and GII Pennsylvania Derby. Added Classic intrigue comes from overseas, as Declaration of War (War Front), a dual Group 1 winner in England this year on grass, but undefeated in three synthetic-track starts, carries the hopes of Ballydoyle and Joe Allen, while Planteur (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) brings a pair of placings in the G1 Dubai World Cup to the table. Saturday’s G1 Cox Plate after suffering a tendon injury, has been officiallyretired by Coolmore, who will sendher to Ireland to be covered byGalileo (Ire) on NorthernHemisphere time next winter. We’ve

decided this is the time to retire her,”

Coolmore’s Michael Kirwan told the

Nicholas Abbey has suffered a setback over the last 24 hours, having developed

Deja Vu All Over Again?... In addition to Fort Larned looking to join Tiznow asthe only back-to-back winners of the Classic, six otherhorses return to defend their respective titles. ReigningHorse of the Year Wise Dan (Wiseman=s Ferry) willattempt to defend in the Mile, while Royal Delta (Empire

Maker) goes for anunprecedented third straightvictory in the Distaff.Mizdirection (Mizzen Mast)will look to confirm herstatus as queen of thedownhill course in defenseof her Turf Sprint title andfellow distaff sprinterGroupie Doll (Bowman=sBand) is likely making thefinal start of her career inthe Filly/Mare Sprint. Blue-

collar Little Mike (Spanish Steps) goes for two in a rowin the Turf, while Trinniberg (Teuflesberg) will be alongshot proposition to make it consecutive Breeders=Cup Sprints. For good measure, both winners of thejuvenile filly races from 2012 return to the scene oftheir finest hours, with Beholder (Henny Hughes)expected to take plenty of action against Royal Delta inthe Distaff and Flotilla (Fr) (Mizzen Mast) is a somethingof a wild card against Wise Dan in the Mile.

Baffert Has Two Cracks at Classic Glory... Bob Baffert is no stranger to the Breeders= Cupwinner=s circle, with eight victories to his credit, butnone to date in the Classic. With last year=s flop byGame On Dude in the rear-view, Baffert is lookingforward to atonement and is taking everything in stride.AWe=re used to running lots offavorites in these big races and Ithink the pressure comes if youdon=t feel like you=re prepared,@ hecommented. AWe feel like hecouldn=t be training any better, helooks great. Last year just didn=tgo right, but I think he=s adifferent horse than he was lastyear. He=s really run someoutstanding races and he doesn=tshow me any signs of tailing off.He looks much better than he didlast year. I think the break is goingto be crucial, but mentally he=s adifferent horse than he was last year.@ And despite anobvious plethora of speed signed on, race strategy willbe straight-forward. AMike Smith knows him really well,so all I can do is get him ready and give Mike the keysto the car and tell him to get him around there as quickas you can.@ The Baffert barn will also send Paynter outin the Classic as he tries to improve on his runner-upeffort to Mucho Macho Man in the GI Awesome AgainS. Sept. 28. AHe=s doing very well,@ Baffert confirmed.AI think with all the speed in there, he should be runninglate. I think he really moves forward off that last race.He looks great, he looks well and he likes this track.

Mott Knows Way to Winner’s Circle... Trainer Bill Mott has nine Breeders= Cup wins to hiscredit, five alone in the Distaff and a pair in the Classic, including the aforementioned Drosselmeyer two yearsago. The Hall of Famer has five horses pre-entered forfour different clients, and looks for his fourth straightDistaff overall, having saddled Unrivaled Belle

(Unbridled=s Song) to a successin 2010 ahead of Royal Delta=srepeat scores. Mott said RoyalDelta has come out of herBeldame defeat at the hands ofPrincess of Sylmar (MajesticWarrior) well and is ready for thethree-peat attempt. AShe=s doingfine,@ he stated, referring to the5-year-old mare. AI didn=t thinkshe ran her very best race [in theBeldame]. She got beat by a verygood filly, she seems to be doingwell and we=ve let her workspick back up.@ Mott added thatwhile the Classic was pondered

earlier this year, the decision to run in the Distaff camefairly quickly. Mott will be double-barrelled in theClassic with GI Jockey Club Gold Cup hero Ron theGreek and Flat Out, third to his stable companionSept. 28. AI=m hoping he can repeat something close tothat,@ Mott said of the former. AHe=s always a solidcompetitor and seems to have come out in good order. Both horses ran credible over the racetrack last yearand hopefully they=ll do the same this year.@ Mott alsowon the >95 Classic with Cigar.

Mandella Ever-Dangerous at Santa Anita... Trainer Richard Mandella has seven Breeders= Cupvictories to his credit, all of them at Santa Anita and allbut one in years ending in >3.= After sending PhoneChatter and Kotashaan (Fr) to scores in the JuvenileFillies and Turf, respectively in 1993, the affableconditioner recorded an historic four-timer 10 years agowith Halfbridled (Juvenile Fillies), Action This Day(Juvenile, for B. Wayne Hughes), Johar (Turf dead-heater) and Pleasantly Perfect (Classic). Beholder gaveMandella a seventh trophy last year and the half-sisterto Spendthrift sire Into Mischief will try to become thefirst in the history of the Breeders= Cup to win theJuvenile Fillies and Distaff in back-to-back years a weekfrom Friday. AShe couldn=t be doing any better,@Mandella stated. AShe seems to be improving as timegoes by. She=s growing up and I don=t think you canask for one to be better than she=s doing.@ AndMandella expects the strapping filly to be at or near thehead of affairs next Friday. AWe=ve never had to teachher anything about speed--she=s got an abundance ofthat. We=re not looking to change anything.@

Glory to BC; Toronado Stays at Home... Connections of the top-class milers Olympic Glory(Ire) (Choisir {Aus}) and Toronado (Ire) (High Chaparral{Ire}) have opted to send the former to the Nov. 2 GI Breeders= Cup Mile. So impressive when annexingthe G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot on Saturday,Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani=s colt has usurped hisG1 Sussex S.-winningstable companion.Assistant trainerRichard Hannon Jr.revealed the news aday after Toronado, who has not been seensince trailing in the G1 JuddmonteInternational at York, took part in aracecourse gallop at Lingfield. AToronado worked atLingfield on Tuesday morning but, having had a breaksince the wind operation that he had after York, heclearly needs a bit more time,@ Hannon Jr. said. AWewill put him away for next season, when the Breeders=Cup will be his ultimate target. It was always going tobe one or the other, but Olympic Glory has come out oflast week=s QE II victory at Ascot better than we couldhave hoped so he will be our representative in the Mile.Sheikh Joaan is keen to have runners at the meetingand we will also be talking Shamshon (Ire) (InvincibleSpirit {Ire}) for the Juvenile Turf.@ Olympic Glory is oneof 22 foreign pre-entrants.

Stellar Path was steadied in rearafter breaking alertly from the outside box upped ingrade once more here. Stoked up with 350 metersremaining, she moved into third entering the final eighthand was driven out to swoop for a career high nearingthe line. AShe has improved with each run since joingmy yard and won very easily at Bordeaux last time,@Thomas-Demeaulte commented. AI thought she had agood shot at the race today, so that=s why we came.

AShe=s not the easiest filly to ride and Gregory Benoistdid a good job settling her as we know she has atremendous turn of foot. Her season is finished now.We will see how she goes through the winter and hopethat she can make it at the highest level next year.@

cont. from p1 In the lead-up to October, sale officials insisted theauction was no longer an afterthought in the minds ofsellers, no longer a place to just send horses that hadmissed previous engagements. The results sheets overthe last few days proved them correct. The saleshowed considerable strength at the top end of themarket, with 15 horses selling for $200,000 or more.Last year, six horses eclipsed that mark. Breaking things down further, there were five horsesthat sold for $300,000 or more, compared to two lastyear, including the $440,000 Speightstown--Betty=s Petcolt who topped the 2012 auction. For sale officials, one stat that was especiallysatisfying was the clearance rate. AIt was terrific,@ saidBrowning. AToday was the lowest buy-back rate of thethree days, but all three days were under 20%. Itshows that there=s demand for horses right now.@ Browning said the sale put an exclamation point ongood few months of selling yearlings. AIt started off ona positive note in July, and I think that set the table fora successful yearling sales season in North America in2013,@ he said. AIt was nice to finish up strong, andobviously it bodes well for the sales coming up inNovember. The marketplace is vibrant. It=s not irrationalor crazy, but it=s full of good commerce across theboard.@ In March of 2009, Fasig-Tipton announced it wasstriking October from its sales calendar, saying it wasno longer Aviable.@ A few weeks later, after objectionsfrom buyers and sellers, Fasig reversed its decision. AI think it=s safe to say the sale is cemented on thecalendar now,@ laughed Browning. AThe sale hascredibility and the confidence of the marketplace. It=snice to hear a cross section of buyers and sellers say tome that this is, >My favorite sale of the year.= That=smusic to our ears. It=s become an important sale for us,and an important sale on the North American salespicture.@ For complete results, visit www.fasigtipton.com.

Borges Torrealba Lands Topper... The star of Wednesday=s final session of the Fasig-Tipton October sale came early Wednesday when hip760, a Hill >n= Dale-bred Smart Strike filly became theauction=s highest-priced horse in years when selling toBorges Torrealba Holdings for $800,000. Bloodstockagent Doug Cauthen, representing the Brazilian family, signed the ticket for the filly. The May 19-foaled misswas produced by MSW & GISP Handpainted (A.P. Indy)and is a half-sister to SW & GSP Patena (Seeking theGold) and SP Oil Painting (Distorted Humor). It=s theextended family of the Grade I winners Touch Gold,Brilliant Speed, et al. Handpainted didn=t have a foal in2013 and is back in foal to Speightstown.

A[Borges Torrealba] is looking for classy, athletic filliesthat have some pedigree, and this filly fit the bill,@ saidCauthen, who was on the phone with the operation=shead Goncalo Torrealba during the bidding. AWenarrowed this filly down as the class of the day, but wedidn=t expect her to be that expensive. I was hopingbetween $400-$500,000. But she=s just a beautiful fillyand has the pedigree, and is the kind you want. Thereally good ones cost a lot.@ The Borges Torrealba family, a vested partner inThree Chimneys Farm, has made a big impact on theAmerican sales scene since announcing its partnershipwith the Midway, Kentucky nursery a year ago. Theypurchased the sale-topping $4.5-million Pure Clan (PurePrize) at the 2012 Keeneland November Sale, and morerecently, and in partnership with Three Chimneys, acquired four horses at Keeneland September for a totalof $3.27 million. Their purchases, all fillies, include a$1.75 million Tiznow half-sister to Speightstown (GoneWest).

Another Star for Hill ‘n’ Dale... Seven hips into Tuesday=s second session at October,Hill >n= Dale Sales sold the sale=s top-priced colt, a$500,000 Distorted Humor yearling. Seven hips intoWednesday=s finale, John Sikura=s operation sold theauction=s top-priced filly, an $800,000 Smart Strikemiss. The symmetry worked well for Hill >n= Dale, which hasjumped from strength-to-strength at the sales this year.At Fasig=s Saratoga Sale, it sold one of the two horses

that broughtseven figures, a$1 millionDistorted Humor-Cascading filly. Afew weeks later atKeenelandSeptember, Hill >n=Dale sold fourseven-figure lotsat KeenelandSeptember, including the $2.2

million Indian Charlie half-sister to Take Charge Ladyand the $1.7 million Medaglia d=Oro half-brother toSuper Saver. Yesterday=s score, meanwhile, wasnoteworthy in that it was care of a family that Johnand his brother Glenn have curated for years. AWe spent a lot of years and money trying to obtainsignificant mares, those pedigrees that are reallyspecial, and to sell horses from those families to peoplelike [Borges Torrealba] here, to Live Oak in Saratoga, toMandy Pope at Keeneland, it=s very rewarding,@ saidSikura. "It's a great market for the unique offerings." While yesterday=s Smart Strike filly had a pedigreethat would have fit in any select auction in the world,Sikura said the game plan was always to bring her tothe October Sale. AShe was a late foal and I had nominated her toSeptember, but I never had any intention of selling her

there,@ he said. AIf shehad made a big stepforward, we mighthave sold her there, but I think she neededthe time. And this salehas become more thanjust a clearing house--it=s a place to sellreally good horses. Wewere well rewarded forbringing her here. Wesold the high colt andthe high filly here, so

it=s been a great sale for us, and a great year for us.@

Perretti Secures Eight Belles Kin for $370,000... The Florida-based horseman J.J. Crupi boughtWednesday=s third-dearest horse, an eye-catching fillyby Unbridled=s Song, on behalf of Perretti Farms for$370,000. Gainesway consigned the daughter of MissAbita (Dixie Union) as hip 986, and the farm=s BrianGraves was celebrating a smart pinhook, havingpurchased the filly for $190,000 last year at KeenelandNovember. The filly is a close relative to the brilliant Eight Belles, another by Unbridled=s Song. Her dam Miss Abita is athree-parts sister to SW Away (Dixieland Band), dam ofthe ill-fated GI Kentucky Derby runner-up. It=s also thefamily of the good sire Belong to Me (Danzig). AThis filly just had everything in the right place,@ saidCrupi. AShe just acted with so much class, and shelooks like a runner. And you can get a runner byUnbridled=s Song.@ Bill Perretti=s Perretti Farms, for over two decades oneof the leading operations in Standardbred racing, hasbeen making its presence felt on the Thoroughbredscene in recent months. It=s very first Thoroughbred,Forty Tales (Tale of the Cat), won a trio of gradedstakes this summer, including the GII Woody StephensS. and GII Amsterdam S. The man who sold him thehorse was none other than J.J. Crupi. AI=ve known Bill for 35 years,@ said Crupi from the rearwalking ring yesterday. AI used to fool with theStandardbreds years ago. Bill=s 86, and he just loves it.I=ve got two other 2-year-olds I broke for him. Todd[Pletcher] ran one and he ran second; Carl Domino ranone, and he ran second, too. Both in New York maidenspecials. So Bill=s on a roll. He thinks it=s easy!@ Cont. p14

Fasig-Tipton October cont.

And Perretti=s just getting started. AI spent $1.9million for him at [Keeneland September], and atSaratoga we probably spent $800,000. He=s rolling.@ The Unbridled=s Song filly was Perretti=s first buy atOctober. Perretti will skip the Breeders= Cup with Forty Tales, though Crupi himself is well-represented. He broke theGI Spinaway S. heroine Sweet Reason (Street Season),and pinhooked the GI FrontRunner S. upsetter BondHolder (Mineshaft). He also broke last year=s GI Turfwinner Little Mike (Spanish Steps), recent hero of theGI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont. For more on Perretti Farms, read Bill Finley=s profilethat ran during KEESEP here.

Casse, Nardellis Team Up on Another Medaglia... Trainer Mark Casse has enjoyed success buyingMedaglia d=Oro yearlings from the Kim and RodneyNardelli at Fasig-Tipton. Three years ago, at theSaratoga Sale, he acquired the filly Funny Propositionfrom the husband-and-wife duo for $275,000, andearlier this year soundly upset champion Royal Delta(Empire Maker) with the 4-year-old in the GII Fleur deLis at Churchill. Casse went back to the well yesterday at October, going to $440,000 to purchase the sale=s third-highest-priced yearling, a colt by the Darley sire from the goodproducer Listen Now (Storm Bird). The May 12-foaledgray was consigned by the Nardellis, who bred him inpartnership with Susan Bunning and Michael Spirito, aship 924. Casse deputized his brother Justin to handlethe bidding duties on behalf of an undisclosed client. AThis colt has a stallion=s pedigree,@ said Justin Casse.

AHe=s a half to fourstakes horses from astrong mare, and he wasthe complete packagephysically. He=s verystrong and well-balanced.He might not be asstretchy as a lot of theMedaglias, but when youlook at him, all the partsare there, and you knowhe=s going to grow upand be a nice horse. Eventhough he=s nowherenear what a pinhookerwould pay, he=s the kindof horse a pinhookerwould love. He looks likehe could be precocious.@ Of the price, he added,

AWe were about at our limit. There wasn=t a whole lotof meat left on the bone.@

The Nardellis have enjoyed success with the colt=sdam Listen Now for over 15 years now. Theypurchased the Whitham homebred as an unraced 2-year-old broodmare prospect in 1996, the same yearListen Now=s half-sister Listening (Night Shift) won theGI Hollywood Oaks. The pedigree would enjoy bigupdates in the coming years, as another half, BeautifulNoise (Sunny=s Halo), won the GII Santa Ana H. in2001, and a third sister, Solar Echo (Spinning World),became a multiple Grade I performer. In the meantime, Listen Now was doing her part tofill her page with black-type. Her foals included the2002 GII Amsterdam S. winner Listen Here (Gulch),whom the Nardellis raced, and the SW Indy Bird (A.P.Indy). She=s also the dam of the GSP Listen (ChesterHouse) and SP Parade the Flag (Distorted Humor).Listen Now was also a good sales producer for theNardellis, giving them their best-ever result at auction,an Unbridled=s Song filly who sold for $600,000 in2004. AShe=s a good mare that=s taken us a lot of places,@said Rodney Nardelli. Listen Now, now 19, did not have a foal this spring, but is back in foal to Midnight Lute. Nardelli reported her Medaglia d=Oro colt had beencatalogued for September, but grabbed a quarter in hisnear fore just before the sale and was a late scratch. AWe had to take care of that, and it healed upperfect,@ said Nardelli. AWe were happy to take himhere; we always like to do business with Fasig-Tipton.They always get the buyers here, and it=s a greatmarket.@ The Nardellis are located not farm from Lexington.AWe=re based between Georgetown and Midway,@ saidNardelli. AWe have 250 acres and do horses and Angus[cattle]--a little bit of everything.@ They have bred or co-bred, among others, the Grade Istakes winner Mona de Momma (Speightstown).

KING’S BESTS FILLY TOPS AS OCT ROLLS ON While the quality on offer at Arqana=s OctoberYearling Sale tapered off yesterday, a solid trade saw atop price of i75,000 paid by Jean-Claude Rouget for adaughter of King=s Best with smart connections.Offered by Haras du Cadran as hip 341, the April-foaledbay is a half-sister to a former member of the Pau-based trainer=s Whipsaw City (Fr) (Elusive City), whowent on to be stakes-placed for Martin Schwartz andChad Brown. From the family of the G1 Grand Prix deParis-winning champion Montmartre (Fr) (Montjeu {Ire}),she was purchased for Daniel-Yves Treves. Late in thesession, Rouget stepped in to secure a son of Diktat(GB) for i67,000. Hip 484 from La MotterayeConsignment is a half-brother to two notables fromSpain in Alonso (Spa) (Green Tune), winner of the GranPremio Nacional B Madrid, and Navarra (Spa) (Caradak{Ire}), successful in the Gran Premio Beamonte (OaksEspanol). ATLANTIC JEWEL OFFICIALLY RETIRED Coolmore=s four-time Group 1 winner and Champion3-year-old filly Atlantic Jewel (Aus) (Fastnet Rock{Aus}--Regard {Aus}, by Zabeel {NZ}), ruled out ofSaturday's G1 Cox Plate earlier this week due toswelling in the lower tendon sheath of her off-foreflexor tendon, has been officially retired and will travelto Coolmore's base in Ireland to be covered by Galileo(Ire) next year on Northern Hemisphere time. AA$320,000 purchase from the 2010 Magic MillionsGold Coast Yearling Sale, Atlantic Jewel signaled herbrilliance from the start, winning three straight to beginher career before adding the 2011 G1 ThousandGuineas in her fourth start. She dominated the G2Wakeful S. thereafter, but was forced to miss the G1Crown OaksBand handed six months on thesidelinesBdue to a stress fracture in her back. Shereturned without a hitch to add the G2 Sapphire S. andG1 All Aged S. the following April before being forcedout of competition once again, this time by a tendoninjury that kept her out for 16 months. The imposingbay looked no worse for the wear when thrashing herfoes first up in the G1 Memsie S. at Caulfield Aug. 31,and added the G2 Stocks S. next out with similar ease. She suffered her first and only defeat in what would beher penultimate outing when forced to set the pace inthe G1 Underwood S. at Caulfield Sept. 21, and wasunable to hold off the challenge of Australian 3-year-oldTriple Crown winner It=s A Dundeel (Aus) (HighChaparral {Ire}), succumbing by a short head. Back offthe pace in the G1 Caulfield S. 12 days ago, AtlanticJewel overwhelmed her rivals, in the processestablishing herself as the Cox Plate favorite. The 5-year-old retires with 10 wins from 11 starts andearnings of A$1,587,925 (US$1,532,824). MichaelKirwan, General Manager of Coolmore Australia, toldAustralia=s Sky Sports Radio that Atlantic Jewel wouldstay with Kavanagh for her initial recovery beforeserving a quarantine period at Coolmore=s Australianbase in the Hunter Valley. AWe=ve decided this is thetime to retire her,@ Kirwan told the radio station. AIt=s avery difficult decision but not a hard one. She=ll do 30days quarantine here at Coolmore before she leaves forIreland, which will probably be in December. She will beserved by Galileo in February.@ Out of the unracedRegard, Atlantic Jewel is a half-sister to CommandingJewel (Aus) (Commands {Aus}), who made it back-to-back Thousand Guineas scores for the family whentaking Caulfield=s filly feature in 2012. The pair ofGroup 1 winners are the only two foals produced byRegard, who died following a paddock accident in2011.

Fred A. Pope, Oct 23, 2013 I have enjoyed the interviews by Barry Irwin on theIFHA. The current status of the IFHA can be found in a taleof two countries: Japan and the United States. When the IFHA started in 1967, the image of Japanracing was very low. It was so low, it was like U.S.racing today. On the other hand, U.S. racing was ridinghigh, so high that in 1968, the horse winning theKentucky Derby was disqualified just for using Bute. Japan did not try to clean up all racing in theircountry. They couldn=t. Like here in the U.S., theproblem was too big and too political. Instead, theycleaned up the highest level and shifted the lower levelsout of the public eye. It took years and is a model forvision, investment and return. Japan now leads theworld in handle and purses, with the JRA brand a cleanimage for racing and the people involved in the sport. U.S. racing took the opposite direction; by expandingthe lower levels of racing; by reducing integrity at alllevels with legal and illegal drugs; by allowing bets afterthe gates opened; all those and more have resulted in alow image for racing and the people involved. Whomade that decision for U.S. racing? Who made thatdecision for all the people involved in the sport andbreeding? The folks who changed racing in the U.S. are notconcerned about the IFHA and what Louis Romanet andJim Gagliano have to say about integrity. They careabout making a living and the law is on their side, notby intent, but by definition. The influence of racehorse owners and breeders wasused to pass the Interstate Horseracing Act (IHA).

They intended to boost U.S. racing to the moon andthat is where it was headed. They did not intend for theIHA to give trainers control of U.S. racing andimplement the changes above. The IHA gives approval by the host track=s racehorseowners to protect their purse account from the hosttrack giving away the races for less than full value. Butinstead, the IHA used the word horsemen, defined astrainers and owners. Horsemen organizations areprimarily trainers. Purse accounts get half the takeout for up to 10% ofthe wager. Horsemen gave approval for the host tracksto give away races to other tracks for 1-2% of thewagers. How can anyone say that protects the hostpurse account, the intent of the law? There are a lot ofconfused reasons why the tracks and horsemen havedone what they have done under the IHA, but there istime to set it right. The IFHA countries had high hopes the Breeders= Cupwould lead the way to change in U.S. racing drug rules. The trainers= representatives with IHA approval stoppedit. The image of U.S. racing at the time Louis Romanet'sfather started the IFHA was the beacon for the world toaspire. But, one definition of a word in the IHA, thoughwell-intentioned when written by a good friend, set inmotion an unintended chain of events that aredestroying U.S. racing. Every country in the IFHA adheres to the legality ofproperty rights; i.e. your home, your land, yourintellectual property, your horse. Property rights are themost basic foundation of business. Trainers have no property rights to your horse.Government must establish the legality of racehorseowners= property rights in the IHA. Racehorse ownersand breeders must now use their influence to revise theIHA from horsemen to racehorse owners. I believe the rebirth of racing in Japan and the failureof racing in the U.S. are directly related to whether thehighest level of the sport is separated, organized andmarketed as a brand, which then becomes the publicface of the sport. Like in Japan, lower level U.S. racingcan easily be moved to less prominent days. U.S. racing is the hole in the IFHA. If properly filled, itwill provide harmony among racing countries, however, harmony should be a strategy instead of an objective. The objective of owners and breeders around the worldshould be the growth, development and protection ofThoroughbred racing. The two words never mentioned in the IFHAinterviews were racehorse owners, which reflects thecurrent structure of racing around the world. We needto have that conversation. We need to bring togetherindividuals who understand the potential of racehorseowners= property rights to transcend internationalborders. Then the IFHA can fulfill the dreams of harmonybetween racing countries and enjoy a future where thewhole is greater than the sum of its parts.

>Single 6 Jackpot= Added to Churchill Wagering Menu:Edited Press Release Officials at Churchill Downs have received permissionfrom the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to launchthe >Single 6 Jackpot= at their upcoming fall meetbeginning Oct. 27. The wager challenges bettors toselect six consecutive winners, and those that have themost winners in the sequence will share equally 80% ofthe money wagered into the pool, with the remaining20% going to the Single 6 Jackpot. The jackpot will bepaid only if there is one winning bet with the sixwinners at the required minimum 50-cent level. If abettor hits the Single 6 Jackpot twice on one ticket--meaning he or she Ascratched into the favorite@ andused both horses in the race; or used two horses in arace and they finished in a dead-heat; or played thesame 50-cent ticket twice for a total of $1--he or she isnot eligible for the jackpot aspect. There can only be asingle winning wager placed at the required minimumbet value for the jackpot to be paid. The low probabilityof a single winning wager means there=s a high chancefor the jackpot to grow daily and reach lottery-likelevels, which creates tremendous excitement and thepossibility of a financial windfall and score of a lifetime. There is one exception: the jackpot must be paid out onthe final day of the five-week meet (Saturday, Nov. 30), which means all money, including thejackpot, will be distributed that day to those with thehighest number of winners in the six-race sequence.

Two with obvious appeal on paper areAbbeville and Meadow Court Studs= hip 106, adaughter of Yeats (Ire) who is a half to a Listed winnerin Princess Nala (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}) from thefamily of the high-class Front House (Ire) (Sadler=sWells); and Fortbarrington Stud=s hip 109, a Teofilo(Ire) half-sister to last year=s G3 Earl of Sefton S. winnerQuestioning (Ire) (Elusive Quality). Despite the 100-plushorses-in-training section aimed traditionally at NationalHunt buyers, this month=s G1 Prix de l=Abbaye heroMaarek (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who cost i95,000 in2011, proved that a classy flat prospect can be boughthere. Among the cast-offs with broodmare potential iship 248, the 3-year-old filly Keeping (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire})who forms part of the Castlebridge Consignment sellingon behalf of Darley. Thought good enough to be tried inthe Listed Cheshire Oaks this term, the Ger Lyonstrainee hails from the family of the Pattern-race scorersLaaheb (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and a host of SaeedManana luminaries including Warrsan (Ire) (Caerleon),Luso (GB) (Salse) and Needle Gun (Ire) (Sure Blade).Another filly who carried Sheikh Mohammed bin RashidAl Maktoum=s silks is hip 261, the 3-year-old Pastiches(Ire) (Street Cry {Ire}), a daughter of the 2001 G1 PrixSaint-Alary winner Nadia (GB) (Nashwan) who was offthe mark at the 11th attempt this month. His HighnessThe Aga Khan=s draft is often sought after by the jumpsfraternity, but one colt who still has potential on thelevel is the 3-year-old colt Zand (Ire) (Zamindar). Hip257 has always been held in high regard by John Oxx,but has failed so far to live up to the promise of hisimpressive debut win at Leopardstown 12 months ago.Full catalogue can be viewed on www.goffs.com.
