ONE OF THE BEST SINCE 2000 Much of the Blazers’ all-time winning percentage ranking can be attributed to Valdosta State’s play since the beginning of the 2000 season, as only two Division II teams have won more games during that period. The Blazers have tallied 141 wins over the course of the last 14-plus seasons, behind only Northwest Missouri State’s 168 and Grand Valley State’s 165. GVSU (.855), NMSU (.848), Tuskegee (.810) and Bloomsburg (.803) are the only teams with a better winning percentage than VSU’s .801. BLAZERS FIFTH IN SUPER REGION 2 RANKINGS Valdosta State learned Monday that it was ranked fifth in the first NCAA Super Region 2 rankings of the 2014 season. The region rankings determine which teams advance to the NCAA Playoffs as each of the first six teams in the final rankings, released Sunday, November 16. The Gulf South Conference dominated the top of the rankings as the conference claimed four of the top six spots. North Alabama was number 1, followed by Delta State at No. 2 and West Georgia at No. 6. Below is a look at this week’s rankings.Rank School Conf. DII Overall 1. North Alabama GSC 6-0 7-0 2. BALANCED RECEIVING CORPS A question for Valdosta State entering the season was the status of its receiving corps, after losing three of its four starters from a year ago. In fact, only one receiver returned to the team that caught double digit passes last year, that being Chris Anderson, who was third on the squad with 44 receptions a year ago. The answers surrounding the receiving corps have been answered as the team has featured a balanced attack. In fact, five Blazers currently have double digit receptions this year, led by Anderson with 33. Shane Henderson follows with 25 while Donovan Bolden has 20 and D’Amonte Ridley 17. Roshmel Young also is in double digits with 13 catches. Overall, 15 VSU players have caught a pass this year, with seven of those hauling in touchdown receptions. Bolden and Henderson have each caught four touchdowns to lead the squad.

RUNNING BACK DUO RETURNS One position that is not in question for Valdosta State entering the 2014 season will be running back, thanks to the return of junior running backs Cedric O’Neal and Austin Scott. Scott and O’Neal have combined to start all 31 Blazer games the last two-plus years and have rushed for a total of 4,818 yards and 43 touchdowns. O’Neal garnered All-GSC honors in each of his first two seasons while also being named the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2012. He has rushed for 2,639 yards in his 30 career games, the sixth-highest total in Valdosta State history, and has scored 25 rushing touchdowns, fourth-best on the VSU career list. O’Neal, who has averaged 6.7 yards per rush on his 393 career carries, has started 14 times the last two-plus seasons. He is 1,218 yards behind Aaron Jenkins’ school record for career yardage and 11 touchdowns behind Dominique Ross for the touchdown mark. Meanwhile, Scott has also played in 30 ca-reer games and has started 18 contests. He has rushed for 2,179 yards, which ranks seventh-best in Blazer history, and 17 touchdowns, which is the eighth-most in the Blazer record books. Scott has carried the ball 348 times on his career and averages 6.3 yards per rush. He is 1,680 yards and 19 touchdowns away from the school records for those categories. Scott leads the team with 476 rushing yards and has scored three times this year while O’Neal is just behind as he has 474 yards and a team-best five touchdowns.

HENDERSON FINDS HIS GROVE After struggling while recovering from a preseason injury over the first couple of games, junior wide receiver Shane Henderson has found the grove that made him a junior college standout the last two contests. On the year, Henderson has caught 25 passes, second-most on the team, for 380 yards, also second-best on the team. Meanwhile, he is tied for the team lead with four touchdown receptions, three of which have come in the last two games.

RANKED TEAMS APLENTY As normal, Valdosta State is playing one of the toughest schedules in the nation this year. Currently, three VSU opponents are ranked in the top 25 of the AFCA poll while another is receiving votes. The Blazers have already defeated No. 12 Winston-Salem State 22-17 and No. 21 West Georgia 40-6 while falling 49-32 to No. 14 Delta State and 31-29 to No. 5 North Alabama this season. VSU played its fourth straight game against a ranked foe October 11 when it defeated No. 23 West Georgia 40-6. The plethora of ranked teams has Valdosta State’s current schedule ranked as the toughest in the nation. The seven teams VSU has played this year have combined for a 31-9 record, not counting games against the Blazers, which accounts for a .775 winning percentage.

MEDLOCK SHINES WITH ARM AND LEG First-year quarterback Jake Medlock has impressed thus far, both with his arm and legs. Through the first seven games of the season, Medlock has completed 103-of-151 passes, a 68.2 completion percentage, for 1,306 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has a 164.44 quarterback efficiency rating and is averaging 186.6 passing yards per game. On the ground, Medlock is third on the VSU squad with 418 rushing yards and is tied for first with five rushing touchdowns. He averages 4.8 yards per rush and 59.7 yards per game on the ground. However, running isn’t the only impressive thing Medlock has done with his legs. He has also handled the Valdosta State punting duties this season and has averaged 44.7 yardsd per punt, which leads the GSC. He booted a 65-yard punt against Winston-Salem State on September 13.

FINDING HIS RANGE Sophomore kicker Anthony Pistelli has proven to be a weapon for the Blazers this season as he has become almost automatic on his field goal and extra point kicking. Pistelli has made 12 of his 13 field goals this season, including a career-best 49 yards against Delta State September 20. In fact, Pistelli is perfect on all of his attempts of less than 50 yards on the year, as his only miss came on a 52-yard try against Winston-Salem State on September 13. Meanwhile, he is seven-of-seven on tries from 40 to 49 yards. Pistelli added a 20-yard field goal to the three from longer than 40 yards that he kicked against West Georgia, giving him four successful kicks in the game, the most by a Blazer kicker since Will Rhody made a school record five versus Central Arkansas on September 25, 2004. Pistelli has also made 28 of his 30 extra point attempts and leads the team with 64 points this season. He has also punted four times on the year for an average of 41.5 yards per punt and kicked off nine times for an average of 62.9 yards per kick and one touchback

THE BLAZERS AT HOME Valdosta State has won 140 of 188 games, with 47 losses and one tie (.747), on its home field since beginning football in 1982. The Blazers are an impressive 131-43-1 (.751) at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium and have gone 9-4 (.692) at Martin Stadium. VSU has gone undefeated at home seven times (5-0 in 2006, 6-0 in 2004, 9-0 in 2002, 5-0 in 1995, 8-0 in 1994, 3-0-1 in 1992 and 5-0 in 1986) in its 32-year history. The Blazers have been particularly successful at home since the beginning of the 2000 season as they have tallied a 73-16 record (.820) during that span, including a 34-12 mark (.739) under Head Coach David Dean.

2014 CAPTAINS NAMED After a preseason vote by the team, three seniors, a junior and a sophomore were named team captains by Head Coach David Dean prior to the start of the season. Defensive end Tevin Davis, offensive tackle Jesse Yancey, quarterbacks Jake Medlock and Kaleb Nobles and linebacker Kenny Murphy all earned the recognition. While the quartet serves as the permanent captains, Dean will continue to allow seniors to represent VSU at midfield for the coin toss. As the leading vote-receiver, Davis will always represent the Blazers and will call the coin flip.

CRADLE OF COACHES Valdosta State has quietly become a hotbed for coaches as a number of head coaches on the NCAA Division I level around the country once wore the Red and Black of the Blazers. Four current NCAA Division I head coaches were once members of the Valdosta State coaching staff, most notably current Florida head man Will Muschamp, who served as the defensive coordinator for the Blazers in 2000. Likewise, West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen was a graduate assistant for VSU from 1993 through 1995 while Murray State head coach Chris Hatcher played for Valdosta State in the early 1990’s before serving as head coach of the Blaz-ers from 2000 through 2006. Washington State head coach Mike Leach also donned the Red and Black in the 1990’s, as offensive coordinator from 1992 through 1996. A number of assistant coaches on the Division I level also spent time in south Georgia, including Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, who was defensive backs coach for VSU in 2000 before serving as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2001. Joe Cauthen and Buster Faulkner, both of whom currently serve on the Middle Tennessee State staff, were on the initial staff assembled by current Blazer Head Coach David Dean in 2007 while Georgia Tech defensive line coach Mike Pelton held the same position for VSU in 2000. Earl Chamber was a defen-sive assistant for a number of years and eventually earned the title of co-defensive coordinator for VSU and is now the defensive coordinator for LaGrange. Finally, Robby Brown, who was VSU’s offensive coordinator from 2009 through 2012, is now the quarterbacks coach for South Alabama and Seth Wallace is the recruiting coordinator at Iowa. Former Kentucky and Baylor head coach Guy Morriss was the offensive line coach at Valdosta State in 1992 and 1993 while Hal Mumme, who went on to serve as the head coach at Kentucky, Southeastern Louisiana and New Mexico State and is now the offensive coordinator for SMU, was the head man of the Blazers from 1992 through 1996.

ANTHONY PISTELLI - SEPTEMBER 8 Blazer kicker Anthony Pistelli earned Gulf South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors after Valdosta State’s 38-10 victory over Albany State in the season opener. Pistelli kicked a career-long 45 yard field goal for the game’s first points and went on to make all five of his extra point kicks for a game-high eight points. Pistelli also managed the kickoff duties for VSU in the game and kicked his seven kickoffs a total of 447 yards, an average of 63.9 yards per kickoff. Only one of his seven kickoffs fell short of the Albany State 1 yard line. The sophomore from Thomasville was also called on to handle the Blazer punting duties in the second half and kicked his first career punt 62 yards. His second punt covered 38 yards for a 50.0 yards per punt average.

JAKE MEDLOCK - SEPTEMBER 15 Jake Medlock set a pair of Valdosta State firsts around Valdosta State’s 22-17 upset of No. 12 Winston-Salem State September 13. Medlock was named the Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the Week following the game as he completed 16-of-27 passes for 162 yards and carried the ball 14 times for 76 yards and a touchdown. Medlock also won the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week honor after averaging 47.9 yards per punt on his seven boots in the game. His final punt traveled 75 yards, the longest punt in Valdosta State history and the eighth-longest punt in GSC history. The punt was one of two that traveled more than 50 yards in the game while three landed inside the WSSU 20 yard line. The 75 yard punt surpassed the old school record of 72 yards set by Andy Gibbs against Delta State on September 19, 1998. The dual honors featured the first time a Valdosta State player has earned two different weekly awards in one week.

JAKE MEDLOCK - OCTOBER 13 Jake Medlock earned GSC Offensive Player of the Week honors after leading VSU to a 40-6 victory over No. 21 West Georgia. Medlock accounted four all four touchdowns in the game as he threw touchdown passes of 68, 6 and 19 yards and ran for a 2 yard run, which he set up with a 52 yard run on the previous play. He passed for 231 yards in the game while completing 10-of-18 passes and ran for a game-high 145 yards, his first 100-yard rushing game. Medlock’s 376 yards of total offense was more than the entire West Georgia team, which tallied 261 total yards in the contest.

ANTHONY PISTELLI - OCTOBER 27 Anthony Pistelli earned his second GSC Special Teams Player of the Week award after a perfect showing against Shorter. Pistelli made all four of his extra point attempts in the contest while also making all three of his field goal attempts. Pistelli opened the scoring for VSU with a 33-yard attempt in the first quarter before adding a 40-yard try early in the third quarter. He then closed out the game’s scoring with a 42-yard attempt with a second to go in the third quarter.

RECORD-BREAKING PASSING PERFORMANCE Senior quarterback Jake Medlock enjoyed a record-breaking performance passing the ball at Mississippi College on October 20. Medlock completed 19 of his 20 passes in the game to establish a new Gulf South Conference record for completion percentage at 95.0 percent. The old mark of 93.8 percent was held by two players, including former Blazer Lance Funderburke, who completed 15-of-16 passes versus Tarleton State on October 9, 1993. Medlock completed his final 19 passes of the game, which marked the fourth highest total in GSC history and the second-most in Blazer football history, behind the 20 straight passes Chris Hatcher completed against New Haven on October 8, 1994. Overall, the Blazers completed 25-of-27 passes against the Choctaws, as Kaleb Nobles was successful on six of his seven attempts. VSU’s 92.6 percent completion percentage in the game also set a new school record.

RE-WRITING THE RECORD BOOKS Passing marks weren’t the only area that Valdosta State entered the record books with its experience against Mississippi College. The 651 yards of total offense VSU garnered in the contest marked the second-highest total in school history, behind the 659 posted against North Alabama on October 27, 2001. Meanwhile, VSU’s 62 points against the Choctaws was tied for the 10th-best output in school history. VSU also enjoyed one of its top rushing performances ever as the 344 yards ranked third in the Blazer record books while the 52 rushes were tied for the sixth-most all-time. The Blazers also rushed for six touchdowns, which tied the third-best total in school history. All of the offense also accounted for 34 first downs, which tied for the second-most in school history while the seven first downs that the defense allowed to Mississippi College tied for the seventh fewest allowed in a game.

DAVIS LEAVING HIS MARK In his fourth year with the Blazers, senior defensive end Tevin Davis is making his mark for the Blazers as he now ranks seventh in the VSU career record books with 31.0 tackles for loss. Davis tallied 4.5 tackles for loss his freshman season in 2011 before terrorizing opponents with 16.0 his sophomore season while helping VSU win the 2012 national championship. Double teams followed the big 2012 season, but that didn’t keep Davis from recording 6.0 tackles for loss last year and he has tallied 4.5 this season, which is tied for third-best on the team.

BLAZERS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD IN GSC Valdosta State was picked to finish third in the Gulf South Conference this season in a preseason vote of the league coaches. North Alabama was picked to win the conference as they garnered five of the seven first place votes and 35 points. Delta State followed with the remaining two first place votes and 30 points while Valdosta State had two second-place nods and four for third place for 26 points. West Alabama was picked to finish fourth with 21 points while West Georgia followed with 17 and Florida Tech at 12. Shorter, in its first season as a NCAA Division II member, rounded out the poss with six points.

THREE BLAZERS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC VSU had three players named to the preseason All-Gulf South Conference team in a vote of the league coaches. Cedric O’Neal earned the honor for the second straight year after also garnering All-GSC honors after each of the last two years. O’Neal has rushed for 2,173 yards and 24 touchdowns the last two seasons, both of which currently rank in the Top 10 of the GSC career record list. O’Neal was joined on the preseason All-GSC offensive squad by senior offensive guard Felei Tauave. Tauave was a second team All-Gulf South Conference selection following last season, during which he started all 10 VSU games and graded out at 84.2 percent with 32 pancake blocks. The final preseason All-GSC honoree was defensive end Tevin Davis. Davis has registered 23 career starts and played in 33 games over the last three years. He has tallied 102 tackles on his career, 26.5 of which are for loss.

NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS Overall, VSU has tallied an 85-33-1 record all-time in non-conference games, a winning percentage of .718 in non-GSC games. Head Coach David Dean has directed VSU to a 30-6 record and an .833 winning percentage in his first seven-plus years leading the squad. Of the six losses under Dean, two have come to GSC foe North Alabama in the NCAA playoffs.

GAME 7VALDOSTA STATE 37, SHORTER 6

VALDOSTA, Ga. - Jake Medlock passed for four touchdowns and Anthony Pistelli added three field goals as Valdosta State defeated Shorter 37-6 in Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. After a field goal by each team in the first quarter, the Blazers did the majority of their damage in the second and third quarters. VSU took the lead in the second quarter as Medlock found Scott Crawford on a 10-yard scoring strike before building a 17-3 lead just before the intermission when Medlock hooked up with Shane Henderson from 16 yards out. Valdosta State opened the second half with a 54-yard pass from Medlock to Donovan Bolden before the Blazers recovered a Hawk fumble that led to Pistelli’s second field goal of the game less than two minutes later. Following a SU field goal, Medlock and Henderson again hooked up for a touchdown while Pistelli added the game’s final points with a second to go in the third quarter. While the Valdosta State offense rolled to 446 yards of offense, the Blazer Black Swarm defense extended its streak of quarters without allowing a touchdown to 12 and limited Shorter to just 308 yards of total offense, including only 78 through the air.
