WILLOWRA WEST SIDE PARK CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

On 4 September, the Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC) Willowra Works team began construction on the Granites

Mines Affected Areas Aboriginal Corporation (GMAAAC) funded West Side Park in Willowra.

The team includes field officers Eric Williams, Azariah Martin, Selwyn Kitson and Malcolm Fry.

The construction will include shade shelters and seating for over 30 people. After preparing the site they are laying the first of four concrete slabs that will host an 8 x 6 metre shade shelter and two 16-seater benches.

“These parks will increase the liveability of the community, which aligns with goal three of our Regional Plan,” said CDRC President, Adrian Dixon. “They will provide an outside meeting place to make important decisions on the direction we want our communities to go,” he said.

This is the second of three parks being constructed and is scheduled to be finished in January 2020.

The CDRC Regional Plan 2018-22 (Year 2) can be found at www.centraldesert.nt.gov.au

They kept the winning rhythm going on Sunday, winning their final pool game that saw them come third in their pool. They then faced off with Alice Springs 2 who were also third in pool B. The Kangaroos disciplined the Alice Springs 2 team 5 points to 2 to land in fifth position overall.

The overall winners were Alice Springs 1 who defeated Mt Liebig Saints to take out the 2019 NT Championship titles.

ALICE SPRINGS CHRISTMAS PARTY A CELEBRATION OF THE YEAR

This year the Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC) Alice Springs Christmas party was held at the Mercure Inn on Friday, 29

November, with a great turnout. Everyone enjoyed the food and were delighted by the arrival of Santa, who handed out the presents. Some of the party goers thought Santa looked strangely familiar.

There will be Christmas parties held on the CDRC communities in December.

NEW FENCE IN LARAMBA

Check out what the Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC) works crew and the Community Development

Program in Laramba have been up to. The Local Authority decided to have new fencing around the park, and now it looks great!

The new fence goes around the park in the centre of the community, so the whole community can enjoy a nice area to sit and have community barbeques.

Demonstrating what can be achieved with teamwork, this was a great collaboration between the Local Authority, the CDRC works crew and the Community Development Program.

LARAMBA'S LEAFY GREENS TENDED BY CDP

The men from Laramba Community Development Program (CDP) have cultivated a market garden, making planter boxes

out of old fridges and washing machine drums. They weed each of the planter boxes and the surrounding ground by hand, prune the tomatoes, water and fertilise the vegetables and fruit trees.

Laramba CDP is harvesting rain water and they have two tanks for drinking water. One tank holds 22,500 litres and the second holds 4,500 litres. Both these were almost full in October.

Francis Madonko, CDP Activity Coordinator, came out for a routine visit to Laramba to see how they are going with the market garden.

“This project is greatly benefiting the job seekers to have a skill that will also boost their nutritional health,” he said. “To have fresh leafy greens and rain water is an excellent result for the community.”

There were about 70 people at the Alice Springs Xmas party.

RECYCLING RANGERS IN TI TREETi Tree were finalists in the 2019 Territory Tidy Towns

Sustainable Awards this year. They were very busy with preparations leading up to the

competition judging. It’s not just about cleaning up though, it’s about recycling too.

A team of seven students from Ti Tree School has been selected to become the Ti Tree School Recycle Rangers.

The team has started to manage the school’s new recycling facility that has been provided by Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC). The students have been trained in sorting bottles and cans into the large bags ready for transport to the Alice Springs Environbank Recycling depot.

In the near future, the Recycle Rangers intend to outreach to community locations to collect recyclable cans and bottles. It is hoped that the funds raised through the cash for containers scheme will assist the school to purchase educational resources for the benefit of all students.

Students across the school have designed anti-litter and recycling posters which are displayed on many wheelie bins used across the Pmara Jutunta and Nturiya communities to promote positive actions for environmental health.

Ti Tree ended up winning four Highly Commended Awards - Litter Management, Landfill Site, Best Store and Tidy Town School.

CDP Program provides work experienceSince 2013, Council has delivered the Community Development Program (CDP) in Anmatjere, Laramba, Willowra, Yuelamu and Yuendumu.

As part of the program, job seekers are able to undertake work experience that assists them with work readiness. This frequently results in the job seeker being employed by Council or another employer – a win-win situation for all.

Council also partners with organisations that provide training and skills development.

The program supports the communities’ and Council’s goal of “a diverse and growing regional economy including strong local employment and a gradual increase in the number of locally available jobs”.

Four CDP participants, both past and present, are profiled here.

I moved from Yuelamu to Laramba to take up the position as Administration Officer and Centrelink Agent. I’ve only been in the position for a couple of weeks, but so far, I’m loving all of it. I really enjoy all the new skills I’m learning, being part of an excellent team, and being able to use my new knowledge to help the community. I’m happy that my CDP case manager helped me to apply for this position, and continues to help me develop my office management skills.

I have been working for Sport and Rec since August this year, and I love working with the children. I enjoy playing all sorts of sports, but my favourite activity is organising softball for the girls. I’m happy that my work hours still allow me to attend CDP activities. I like to come in for the morning and do some painting while I catch up with the other ladies. It’s one of the ways we keep our culture strong. Because of my ongoing involvement with CDP I learn new skills that I can share with my participants.

Training and support for job seekers Part of Council’s role as a CDP provider is to facilitate training and support to assist job seekers find employment.

Standard training activities include: resumé preparation, work health and safety, food handling, manual handling, numeracy and literacy, basic repairs and maintenance for buildings, cooking, health and nutrition and timesheet preparation.

More specific training is tailored when large-scale employment opportunities come to the region such as road sealing, construction or mining industry work.

Depending on the job seeker’s needs and work aspirations, CDP also provides assistance with attaining licences such as a driver’s licence, a White Card for the construction industry or an Ochre Card for working with children.

I have been working at Aged Care for three months now, and I really enjoy it. I love being part of such a supportive team and knowing that we can confidently provide excellent services to the community. Working here is helping me to strengthen my relationships with our older community members. Being a CDP participant helped me to develop skills that I use here, like cooking, cleaning, and teamwork. I like that I can go to CDP and speak with my case manager about things that are bothering me at work and know that I’ll be taken seriously and given support.

ISAIAH FIREBRACE PERFORMS IN TI TREE

International singing star Isaiah Firebrace played a free concert at the Ti Tree oval on 15 October, organised and supported by

staff from Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC).The young indigenous man was raised in Victoria; his mother

is Gunditjmara and his father is Yorta Yorta. He won Australian X-Factor in 2016 and represented Australia at Eurovision in 2017, coming ninth. Families from Ti Tree, Pmara Jutunta (6 Mile) and Nturiya

(Ti-Tree Station) came to the concert, with around 60 people enjoying the live music. Ti-Tree preschool sold cold drinks and snacks to raise money for equipment for the school.

After the music, everyone had a chance to meet Isaiah, chat and take photos together.

“Everyone was really excited and had a fantastic time!” said Grace Barry, CDRC Youth Sport and Recreation team leader in Ti Tree.

YUELAMU AGED CARE GETS NEW VERANDAH

John Marshall and Mark Wilson have been busy at the Yuelamu Aged Care Centre and have done a fantastic job of concreting the verandah. It includes

wheelchair access.“Thank you for all the jobs you have been doing for Aged Care lately. Your

hard work and dedication has really helped us to provide better service to our Community clients,” said Marlin De Silva, Aged and Disability Operations Coordinator – East.

“We just wanted to make sure you know how much you are valued and appreciated,” she added.

TIDY YARD COMPETITION IN ENGAWALA A CLEAN SWEEP

Michael Wehr of Lot 19, Engawala, cleaned up first prize in the Engawala Tidy Yard Competition in September, ran by Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC).

Second place was awarded to Diane and Maureen Dixon of Lot 14 (CDRC employees) and third place to MaryAnn Inkamala of Lot 6.

The Police Officers from Harts Range accepted the challenge of being the judges and were impressed with how tidy the community of Engawala was.

Great Effort Awards were awarded to Maxie Kumara of Lot 8, Janine Tilmouth of Lot 26 and Davey Tilmouth of Lot 30.

The Engawala Store, run by Outback Stores, donated the first, second and third prizes – a $100 voucher, $75 voucher and $50 voucher respectively, to be used for healthy items in-store. CDRC Council donated three $10 power cards to those who won a Great Effort Award.

Zoe Groves, the Essential Services Officer for CDRC in Engawala was very happy with the participation in the competition. “Everyone put in a lot of effort to clean up their yards. Well done to everyone that participated.”

WILLOWRA CLEANING PACKS

Willowra's Local Authority decided to allocate some of its funding to provide

every house in Willowra with a cleaning package. Each package included a heavy duty steel mop bucket, a mop with removable head for machine washing, a dust pan and brush, a broom, a grass rake and 50 heavy duty garbage bags.

Within 45 minutes of putting the notice up, 21 of the 40 packages were collected. Les Fry and Vivienne Martin were the first to collect their package. Lilian Long (LA Member) and Jasmine Collins were the second to collect.

The Local Authority decided this project was a great initiative for the community and the community has really appreciated it.

Looks like Willowra has got a sparkling future.

NEW LIBRARY BUILDING IN LAJAMANU

The old Night Patrol office building in Lajamanu has been refurbished and transformed into a new library space for

Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC) with funding from Libraries NT.

The renovation is complete, and the Library is due to open early next year. But before that can happen, the library needs books and staff. Maree Axford, Operations Coordinator for Children’s Services, has coordinated the relocation of the library materials from the Batchelor Learning Centre to the new space.

“It has been a while coming, but it is good to finally achieve this outcome,” she said.

There are also new books coming from NT Libraries and a management team of three from CDRC are heading up to Darwin mid-December to a library orientation.

Manager of Children’s Services, Kate Proctor, said “We’re really looking forward to the library opening next year and recruiting will begin in January. We will be looking for a local person to become a Library Officer.”

The library will be used by local residents for reading, Wi-Fi and studying.

NEW KITCHEN FOR WILORA TO COOK UP A STORM

Residents at Wilora, some 55km north of Ti Tree, are taking the initiative for working and projects in their community. After Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC) installed a new kitchen in Wilora in August for the Community Development

Program (CDP), it is being used to run the CDP Health and Nutrition program for Wilora. It took local CDP participants two days to set it up, including

cleaning the fridges and defrosting the deep freeze. They installed a new fridge, cleaned the main hall area and threw out broken, rusted equipment. They developed a plan involving cleaning, food menus and a “No dogs in the kitchen” policy.

“The women are very enthusiastic about the new space,” said Leanne Hoey, CDP Activity Supervisor at Anmatjere. “They are keen to set up a white-board and roster for tasks on site. We have posters on healthy eating to put up and a new copy of the Fred Hollows cookbook in the kitchen,” she said.

CDRC CEO, Diane Hood, said they are helping communities in their region to grow and develop, including improving job opportunities. “CDP projects like this one are an important step in this goal,” she said.

It looks like Wilora has some fine dining coming its way.CDP participants Krista Price, Rhonda Nambaird (Aboriginal Liaison and Engagement Officer) and Angela Numina in the new kitchen.

DEVELOPING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER IN YUELAMU

The Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC) Community Development Program (CDP) team in Yuelamu have had a very productive couple of months.

The men have been working together to improve the roads in Yuelamu by filling in potholes and gaining skills that may help them to get jobs.

Not only have the men been busy though. The CDP Women’s Team have just designed and painted a sign to reflect the new opening hours for the Yuelamu Store.

Through consultations with Tammi Booker, the Yuelamu Store manager, and Nick Muirhead, CDP Activity Supervisor, the CDP women participant's next project will be to create a mural reflecting the local indigenous women’s art and will cover an entire wall of the interior of the shop.

A TABLE FOR FUNERALS IN YUELAMU

At the last funeral in town Nick Muirhead, CDP Activity Supervisor, noted that there was no table strong enough to support a coffin in the community. He

found some scrap steel that he and his CDP men’s team built into a sturdy base for a large solid table.

Once the large tabletop is on, the community will have a great table to use for future funerals.

Well done to the CDP team for giving back so much to your community and being clever enough to build and create something using all recycled scrap metal and wood. Thank you for your hard work.

Nyirripi held a football carnival on 1-3 November with Willowra and Yuendumu sending both men’s and women’s

teams to participate, while Nyirripi fielded two men’s and a women’s team.

Central Desert Regional Council (CDRC) works crew with help from Community Development Program (CDP), cleaned and leveled the oval in the days leading up to the start to ensure player safety.

Northern Territory Police were present, supported by Community Safety Patrol teams from Southern Tanami Kurdiji. Due to the family atmosphere they were only spectators throughout the sports weekend.

In the men’s competition Nyirripi, after narrowly defeating Willowra, faced Yuendumu in the grand final. Despite the scores, it proved an entertaining game with Yuendumu proving too strong.

The Nyirripi women’s team were spectators in the women’s grand final with Willowra coming out on top against a determined but young Yuendumu side.

Many individual trophies were handed out at the presentations along with the winner’s prize. “It was great to see the trophies

shared between the visiting communities as well as the home team,” said Ray Hocking, relieving Community Services Manager in Nyirripi.

The Nyirripi Demons men’s team made it to the grand final.
