A message from the DirectorIt’s time to recognize the hard work of our retailers. We’ve crossed the Fiscal Year 2017 finish line and have our sights on making Fiscal Year 2018 a stand out. We have a lot of work ahead.

First, I’d like to thank all our retailers for their hard work this past year. In this month’s issue, we shine the spotlight on retailers whose sales have earned them a spot as a top seller. At the same time, we salute each of you – and your employees -- for the day-in-day-out work that helps make your business and our mission a success. We could not do this without you.

Preliminary numbers are in. Retailers have sold almost $3.060 billion worth of Lottery games to customers, with customers cashing in more than $1.941 billion in prizes. Look for a more detailed breakdown of the year and financial figures in an upcoming issue.

As the state’s biennium budget process is now complete, we’re looking ahead to several enhancements to support sales, including cashless purchasing solutions for Lottery vending machines. We’re also preparing for game enhancements and other changes, like the Mega Millions matrix change scheduled for Oct. 28, when tickets for Mega Millions (5/70 & 1/25) go on sale. The impact of that change begins Sept. 26, which is the last day customers can request 10 drawings for the current Mega Millions (5/75 & 1/15) game, starting its rolldown period.

We have two head-turning instant games coming soon. The first, Game of Gold, goes on sale Aug. 16. Players can use their smart phone to play the Ohio Lottery’s first 3D instant game, or they can play the traditional way. Look for special point-of-purchase material to be delivered shortly. See page 3 to learn more.

Then, we have the Willy Wonka Golden Ticket™, set for release Sept. 6. The multi-state instant game offers a $5-million top prize and an incredible second-chance drawing for prizes of up to $1 billion. You can find more about it on page 4.

If you’re an instant ticket-selling retailer, take a few minutes to review the next in our Taking Care of Business series on securing instant ticket inventory. Inventory management is so important for the financial health of your business and to maximize the potential of your instant games. You might be surprised, but the process for deactivating your instant tickets only takes a few minutes, and it protects you in case of theft or loss.

Taking Care of Business:

Securing your instant ticket inventoryOne simple step you can take to manage your instant ticket inventory is to deactivate the instant games you sell over the counter at the end of each day.

“Retailers mistakenly believe that deactivating instant tickets is a hassle,” says longtime Cleveland regional office trainer Barry Hurst. “The reality is that it takes less than 5 minutes to deactivate, and the process is straightforward and simple.”

The process keeps retailers safe and protects their liability in the unfortunate occurrence of theft at the store. Lottery policy states that retailers must deactivate their instant tickets before closing for the end of the day to receive credit for lost, stolen or destroyed instant ticket inventory.

Protect your inventory. Auto Deactivate tickets sold over the counter at the end of the day. Here’s how:

1. Go to the Instant Menu and press the Auto Deactivate button. You will be taken to the Auto Deactivation screen. (Note: it may take about a minute for your terminal to pull up data on all your activated books.)

2. If you sell from the front of the book, you’re ready to start scanning. However, if you sell from the back of the book (starting with the end ticket number), you’ll need to press the Book Reversed button on the right-hand side of the screen before you complete the next step.

3. Take your scanner and go to your instant ticket dispenser. Scan the next ticket available for sale for each book in your dispenser. A check mark will appear next to each game you scan on your terminal’s Auto Deactivation screen.

4. Once you’re done scanning all the tickets in your instant ticket dispenser, press the Deactivate button. A Book Auto Deactivation receipt listing the details of each game, including the range of tickets deactivated and its value, will print. File the receipt in a safe place. Note: Any settled instant game books held in your dispensers cannot be deactivated.

Where do you store your extra instant games? Most retailers keep instant ticket inventory that is not on display in a safe. Review the procedures for accessing the safe and know

who is going into the safe and when.

Ready to activate your instant tickets the next day?

1. Go to the Instant Menu.2. Press the Auto Activate button. You’ll be taken

to the Auto Activation screen.

An Auto Activation report showing all the books you’ve activated will print. You’re now ready to sell.

Installation of credit/debit card readers for cashless vending begins Sept. 4To keep up with current consumer trends, credit/debit card readers for cashless vending will be installed on WinStation and MP vending machines starting Sept. 4. If you have a Lottery vending machine, look for a call by an Intralot technician to set up a time to install the reader on your machine. Calls will be made approximately 10-14 days in advance of installation. The units are scheduled to go live Oct. 28.

Installation of monitors for WinStation vending now in progressThe Ohio Lottery has begun installing monitors to replace the LED messaging in current use on the WinStation vending machine. The monitors are designed to create more interest and sales at vending. Please contact your sales representative or executive chain account representative if you have questions. WinStation upgrades will continue through the fall.

Other Mega Millions game change impacts

Terminal main screen. The main screen on your terminal will change Oct. 28, with the two buttons providing options for an immediate purchase of Mega Millions with Megaplier removed from the screen. Both options will still be available within the Mega Millions wager screen. This change provides room for future game options.

Vending: If you have a WinStation or MP vending machine, customers will not be able to make Mega Millions purchases after 10:45 p.m., Friday, Oct. 27. Mega Millions sales will resume after the new game goes live on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Bet card deliveries: New bet cards are expected to be delivered by early October.
