Ohio 50/50, the Ohio Lottery’s new weekly raffle game, goes on sale Aug. 29. It plays just like a traditional raffle game – with 50% of every purchase going to the jackpot. We’ll pick a jackpot winner and winners of $2,000 and $500 prizes – 36 winners in all -- each drawing. Drawings take place every Saturday at 10 p.m., starting Sept. 3. Each wager costs $1. And, like a lot of traditional raffle games, every $5 single-ticket purchase provides your customers with a sixth wager free. Check out the details on page 3. Be sure to share the news with your customers today.

Preparing for the holiday seasonIt’s just around the corner and we want the 2016 holiday season to be even more profitable for you. Holiday sales have an incredible impact on our retailers’ bottom line. Last year, retailers sold $44 million worth of instant games in the week leading up to Christmas, a record.

Retailers have an important role to play.

Holiday instant games are set to reach retailers October 19. Prepare now for the high-volume, fast-paced, three-month holiday sales period. Holiday instant game sales impact your bottom line. Last year, Ohio Lottery retailers sold $44 million worth of instant games in the week leading up to Christmas – an extraordinary achievement. Demand was extremely high.

Holiday-themed instant ticket sales led the way. An analysis of Lottery instant sales shows that during the 15-week holiday instant ticket sales period, sales of the five holiday instant games increased 28% compared to the prior year. Overall instant ticket sales increased 3.3%.

How to prepare for holiday sales.Start preparing now. Boost sales and commissions by activating your current instant ticket deliveries within 48 hours of receipt. Maximizing and managing your instant ticket inventory boosts sales. Take advantage of the ongoing instant ticket activation incentive!

Review your holiday 2015 sales with your Lottery sales representative.

Make room for additional instant ticket inventory. Review space, procedures and staff. Talk with your sales representative to figure out the best way to keep your bins full, keep customers happy and manage the volume. Make it “one stop shopping” for your busy customers.

Tony Zeakes, owner of Sun Shop Gas and Carryout, credits his Lottery and business success to the customer services skills he has learned over the years. The Bridgeport area gas station and convenience store is a local favorite where customers can come in, pick up milk and chips, and stop to play Lottery games. A former banker, Tony has owned Sun Shop Gas with his brother, David, and wife, Mary Ann, for the past 40 years. Together, they create a business that attracts returning customers.

“The excellent customer service that they provide has prolonged their success,” said Bill Boston, the store’s Lottery sales representative, emphasizing the easy going demeanor of the owners and manager, Chuck Bellville.

“At one point, they had to relocate to a new location that was about a block away, but their sales picked right up where they left off,” says Bill. “They’ve been the top retailer in my district for decades.”

Last year, the store’s Lottery sales earned it a spot as the top retailer in its district and one of the top 15 in the Athens region. Instant tickets are a favorite at the store, bringing in

about 58% percent of Lottery sales. The store’s other top sellers are Pick 3, Powerball, Mega Millions, Pick 4 and Rolling Cash 5.

Customer service isn’t the only thing that makes this store’s Lottery sales so impressive. The Zeakes continuously improve signage and promote Lottery games, working closely with Bill to stay updated on new Lottery products.

“We’ve been selling Lottery since the Lottery started in Ohio,” said

Tony. “It’s helped our business quite a bit because it entices people to come in and play, and then they buy more products from the store.”

Sun Shop Gas employees pay attention to sales fundamentals. The instant ticket dispenser is arranged with higher price points at eye level, to catch customers’ attention. The nearby player advertising display provides draw game information, with the screen elevated for easy view throughout the store. The counter is clean, giving customers space to play, and the wall to the right of the counter is decorated with information about previous winners. Retailer Best PracticesWhenever new instant tickets arrive to the store, the Zeakes work to activate them quickly, giving customers immediate access to the games they want, and improving sales.

“They know the value of super awesome sales practices,” says Lottery sales representative Bill Boston.

After decades of Lottery sales, store owner Tony Zeakes gives credit to the hard work of David, MaryAnn, Chuck and all his employees.

“All of us treat (customers) with respect…that’s what keeps them coming back,” says Tony.

After 25 years of working with Bill, the Zeakes consider him a friend, and appreciate his continuous help.

“He comes in and updates our signs and helps us with whatever we need. He’s always taken care of us,” says Tony.
