• The neon sign was invented in France in 1910, but the first one didn’t come to the United States until 1923. That was the year a car dealership in Los Angeles put up two brightly lit “Packard” signs. The novelties literally stopped traffic in the streets.

• Pure water doesn’t conduct electricity; in fact, it’s an insulator. It’s the impurities in water that conduct electricity -- making it a bad idea to use a hair dryer in the shower. There are underground lakes so pure that you can safely change a light bulb in them.
• The old Pony Express has been romanticized in modern times, but it’s rarely pointed out that it was a financial failure. The mail delivery service actually lost an average of $13 for every item it carried.

AUSTRIA (2008) - A dog was taken to a local veterinary clinic in Austria with the animal displaying symptoms including constant vomiting and swaying side to side. The vet said it was apparent the dog was drunk. “When I got him up on the table, it smelled like a distillery,” said veterinarian Karl Hofbauer. “Obviously, I could not use a breathalyzer, so I had to take a blood sample and have it analyzed in a lab for human samples,” Independent Online quoted the veterinarian. Findings from tests revealed that the dog had large amounts of alcohol in his blood, about 1.6 grams per liter. The dog’s owner, a hunter, insisted that it was not due to alcohol ingestion. It was determined that the alcohol was due to the half a kilo (1.2lbs.) of yeast dough that the dog had devoured. Apparently the yeast fermented inside the dog’s stomach, causing Dingo’s inebriated state. “Nasty minded people often say that we hunters are often drunk,” joked Dingo’s owner, “but in my case it was the dog.”

• John Billings devised a custom zinc alloy he called grammium, of which he uses about 6,000 lbs. (2,721 kg) a year to create the Grammys. It takes about 15 hours to produce each of the five-pound (2.27 kg) awards in Billings’ 2,000-square-foot studio. Each award is cast from three different molds – the base, the gramophone cabinet, and the tone arm. After casting, the cabinet and arm are plated in 24-karat gold.
• The trophy that each artist receives at the televised broadcast is actually a “stunt” Grammy that is re-used each year. Because the winners aren’t known at the time of production, after the announcement of the winners, Billings and his crew engrave the brass plates (including a unique serial number for authenticity), and affix to the base of the actual trophies. The awards are then boxed and personally hand-delivered to Los Angeles by John Billings.
• The first Awards ceremony was held in 1959, recognizing performers from 1958 in 28 different categories. The big winners that year with three awards apiece were Ella Fitzgerald and Ross Bagdasarian. Bagdasarian, also known as David Seville, was the creator of Alvin & The Chipmunks, who captured those awards for “Christmas, Don’t Be Late.” Other winners included Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Peggy Lee, and Count Basie.
• The second Awards ceremony was the first to be presented on television, although not as a live program. In fact, the Grammys were not aired live until 1971. Bobby Darin was the Best New Artist of 1959 at the second ceremony, as well as winning Record of the Year with “Mack the Knife.” Frank Sinatra took Album of the Year. Ray Charles
was the big winner the following year, collecting four awards.
• Every year, the Recording Academy receives more than 20,000 entries to be considered for a Grammy. If a recording meets all of the eligibility requirements, it is then voted on by the Academy’s voting members, with those votes resulting in the nominations. Voting members must not be swayed by the entry’s success on the charts, sales, or personal friendships. Voters are those who have been credited on at least six commercially-released tracks, and include vocalists, conductors, songwriters, composers, producers, arrangers, and others involved in a release. Media companies are not allowed to vote.
• From the initial 28 awards, the total has grown to 30 fields with 84 categories within those fields. To be eligible for this year’s awards, the recording must be released anytime from October 1, 2018 to August 31, 2019.
• The Grammy’s definition of
Best New Artist is a performer whose first recording establishes his/her public identity. There is also the honor of “The Big Four,” when an artist wins Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. Only one performer in Grammy history has captured the Big Four in a single year, Christopher Cross, who accomplished the feat in 1981. The singer Adele has also won the Big Four, although not in same year.

“When Woodrow proposed to me,” President Woodrow Wilson’s second wife, Edith Bolling Galt, once recalled, “I was so surprised that I nearly fell out of bed.” It is interesting to note that Woodrow and Edith married nine months after their first meeting (by chance) at the White House. NOTE: After a disabling stroke, Wilson spent the last seventeen months of his second term lying or dozing in the White House, unable to carry out his duties.
Edith unobtrusively performed many of his Presidential functions. She proved her resourcefulness when, during World War I, she bought a flock of sheep to crop the White House lawn, and auctioned their wool for the benefit of the Red Cross. The auction netted $100,000.

• The idea for Snow White was planted in Walt Disney’s brain when he was just a 15-year-old Kansas City newsboy. In 1916, the youth viewed a short silent film version of the story and visualized it on the big screen. When Disney’s film was released in 1937, it was the first full-length animated feature film produced in America, as well as the first produced in full color.
• With an original budget of $250,000, the projected total was ten times that of the budget of Disney’s Silly Symphonies shorts. Disney was ridiculed for believing it could be successful, and even his wife was unsupportive. Walt mortgaged his house to pay for the movie, which, in the end, exceeded $1.4 million. But his gamble proved to be a good one, as the film held the title of highest-grossing film for a year, before it was displaced by Gone with the Wind. Snow White does continue to be the highest-grossing animated film, adjusted for inflation. Walt used the profits to buy 51 acres of land to build Disney Studios, still in use today.
• It took about three years for 750 artists to create the more than 2 million sketches that went into the movie. Walt Disney was adamant about realistic forest creatures, and brought live animals into the studio for the artists to study.
• Lucille LaVerne was chosen to voice the Wicked Queen, but during production, was told by the animators that they needed an older, raspier voice for the Old Witch. Lucille left the recording booth momentarily and when she returned, the voice of the witch was perfect. How did she do it? She took her teeth out!
• Adriana Caselotti, the voice of Snow White, received $970 for her work (about $17,000 in today’s dollars). Because Disney wanted to keep the character’s voice special and unique, Caselotti’s contract restricted the 19-year-old from ever acting in films again. Because she was a classically-trained singer, she went into the field of opera. She did, however, continue to voice Snow White on several occasions, including a recording for the wishing well at Disneyland when she was 75 years old.
• The mystical voice of the Magic Mirror was achieved by the voice actor, Moroni Olsen, speaking his lines wearing a box frame covered with old drum heads over his head. The voices of both Grumpy and Sleepy
were provided by Pinto Colvig, who also voiced Pluto and Goofy in other Disney productions, as well as Bozo the Clown.
• Twenty-five songs were written for the film, but that number was whittled down to just eight. The movie was nominated for Best Musical Score at the 1938 Academy Awards.
• Can you name the seven little men? They were Grumpy, Sneezy, Sleepy, Doc, Dopey, Bashful, and Happy. However, there were at least 50 other names suggested during the initial phase, including Blabby, Gaspy, Crabby, Flabby, Scrappy, Sniffy, Biggy-Wiggy, and Wheezy. At the last minute, Sneezy was selected over Deefy.
• The original plan for the silent Dopey was for him to be a gabby little dwarf with the voice of Mel Blanc, but the producers had trouble finding a voice that seemed quite right. To avoid what they deemed wrong, Dopey became the silent one. Dopey’s slow footsteps on a creaky floor were created by Walt’s brother, Roy, who slowly bent a leather wallet back and forth.
• Although Snow White ends up with Prince Charming, she never interacts with him in the movie, in fact, never even talks to him. The Prince is only seen a little bit more than two minutes in the entire film.

THE GRAMMY AWARDS (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3)
• There’s a difference between Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Record of the Year recognizes the artist, the producer, recording engineers, and sound mixers, while Song of the Year honors the songwriter.
• You’ve probably never heard of the Grammy record-holder with the most awards. Nominated 74 times, Sir Georg Solti, who was conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for 22 years, won 31 Grammys, more than any other recording artist in any category. Jazz legend Quincy Jones has had more nominations than any other artist, with 80, winning 28 of those awards.
• The honor of the most Grammys by a female artist belongs to bluegrass singer and fiddler Alison Krauss, who has captured 27 awards from her 42 nominations. Her first award was in 1990 for the Best Bluegrass Recording for “I’ve Got That Old Feeling,” but perhaps her best-known achievement was her music for the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” which earned the Album of the Year.
• In 1984, Michael Jackson set a record for the most wins in a single night, with eight trophies, knocking out the previous record-holder, Paul Simon, who had seven wins in 1971.
The group Santana tied Jackson’s record in 2000. Only eight artists have won six or more Grammys in one night, including Adele, Eric Clapton, and Beyonce.
• Stevland Hardaway Judkins, better known as Stevie Wonder, won 14 Grammy Awards between 1974 and 1977. His total to date is 25 wins from 74 nominations. Wonder is one of just three artists in Grammy history to have won Album of the Year three times. The other two are Paul Simon and Frank Sinatra.
• In 1990, the duo Milli Vanilli became the first artists to be stripped of their Grammys. Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus had achieved international fame for their 1989 album “Girl, You Know It’s True,” and were awarded the Grammy for Best New Artist. However, it was soon learned that
the pair did not sing any of the vocals on the recordings. They did attempt a comeback as Rob & Fab, but after the scandal, success was hard to find.
• Although Elvis was the king of rock and roll and was nominated several times in that category, he never received a Grammy for that genre. He was awarded three Grammys for his gospel music in 1967, 1972, and 1974. Elvis never attended a Grammy Awards ceremony.

Milli Vanilli
W.C. Fields was engaged to work at Fortescue’s Pier, in Atlantic City, for ten dollars a week and cakes. There was no admission charge to the performances of Fields and his fellow artistes at Fortescue’s. The management made its profit by selling sandwiches and beer. Fields, who was still in his teens, was engaged as a juggler and drowner. When business was good, he juggled.
When it was bad he drowned. He would get into a bathing suit, wade out until the water was neck deep, and cry for help. Saved, he would be carried to Fortescue’s and rolled on a barrel. Barkers urged beer and sandwiches on the excited people who had seen the rescue and come in to watch the stirring resuscitation. Fields sometimes
drowned three or four times a day...”
NOW THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT!
W. C. Fields, (1879-1946) American actor and comedian.

New York Skyline
GOOD MEN WITH BAD IDEAS The early 20th Century marked the birth of the skyscraper. When Walter Chrysler’s tower was completed in 1929, becoming the world’s tallest building, former General Motors chief (and Chrysler’s arch-rival) John Jacob Raskob learned that his own tower, the Empire State Building, being developed mere blocks from the Chrysler Building, would be just four feet taller than Chrysler’s. Raskob had his architects (Shreve, Lamb, & Harmon) revise their plans to guarantee that his building would remain the world’s tallest for some time. Their solution surely ranks among the most absurd ideas ever concocted by modern
architects. The solution? A mooring mast for flying Zeppelins. Passengers, it was thought, would walk across a rope bridge tossed up to the zepplin - 1,250 feet above the bustling streets of New York. The mast was built but, after
two dangerous attempts, its use was abandoned. The building, however, was a success: it held the ‘world’s tallest’ title for more than fifty years.

• Most of us are familiar with the bright yellow magazine known as National Geographic. But how did it get its start? A group of prominent Washington, D.C. gentlemen who were active in the city’s scientific and intellectual community desired to further advance the interest of geographical knowledge and ideas. A large number of men received an invitation to a meeting intended to organize a society to further that goal.
• In January, 1888, 33 men formed an organization called The National Geographic Society. They hailed from several different vocations, including geographers, explorers, teachers, lawyers, mapmakers, military officers, and financiers. Nine months later, the first issue of the magazine was published. • Telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell took over the reins of the Society’s presidency in 1898. Under his leadership, the periodical became famous for its spectacular photography.
• By 1912, the Society began using the revenues from the magazine to award grants to expeditions and research projects. The first was the Peruvian Expedition, which excavated Machu Picchu in the Peruvian Andes. The magazine’s April, 1913, issue made the world aware of this ancient wonder.
• In 1926, the circulation of National Geographic magazine had reached one million copies. That year also marked the milestone of the first natural-color underwater pictures, captured by staff photographers in the Florida Keys.
• In 1935, guest author Amelia Earhart penned her account of the first solo flight from Hawaii to California for the magazine.
• The Society began its support of underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau in 1952, and continued its support for more than 15
years with 37 grants for his work in ocean exploration. In 1961, Jane Goodall received her first grant for the study of chimpanzees.
• In 1963, National Geographic sponsored the first American team to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. Nine-hundred porters hauled the group’s 27 tons of baggage and 216 tanks of oxygen up the mountain’s west ridge. Enduring wind chill temperatures of -85 degrees F (-65 C), the team took photos and film footage before descent. However, darkness forced an overnight on the slopes without shelter. There were no casualties, but a magazine staffer lost all of his toes to frostbite. That expedition was the subject of the Society’s first televised
special in 1965, with 26 million viewers.
• In 1985, Robert Ballard teamed up with National Geographic to locate the wreckage of the Titanic on the floor of the North Atlantic Ocean. Filmmaker James Cameron directed the 1997 movie blockbuster about the ship, then, in 2012, joined up with National Geographic to become the first person to descend solo to the Pacific Ocean’s deepest point, the Mariana Trench, 6.8 miles (10.9 km) below the surface.
• National Geographic began tracking Paul Salopek in 2013, when he began his 21,000-mile (33,796-km), 10-year walk across the globe. His journey tracks the path of the first humans to migrate out of Africa.
• From its first issue, which was sent to 165 members, the number of subscribers has grown to nine million, and it’s now estimated that 40 million view National Geographic each month. It’s been published continuously since that first issue in 1888. Until 1998, the magazine was available only to members of the Society, but became available on newsstands that year. The Society has funded upwards of 13,000 grants to scientists and explorers around the world.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC This week, Tidbits celebrates National Geographic Day with these facts
about the work of this famous society.
During his audition for the role of Mork from Ork (on the ‘70s sitcom “Mork and Mindy”), Robin Williams was invited by Gary Marshall, the show’s producer, to have a seat. Williams immediately obliged, sitting in the indicated chair - on his head! He had soon won Marshall’s heart, and the coveted role: Williams, Marshall later explained, was the only alien who had auditioned. On the set, Williams’ departures from script were so frequent that the show’s peeved scriptwriters sometimes left entire scenes blank but for a bitter stage direction: “Mork does his own thing.” NOTE: Williams’ first appearance as the alien Mork was not on “Mork & Mindy” as is commonly believed. The goofy character was introduced in a Richie Cunningham dream sequence - on “Happy Days.”

In 1999, eight-year-old Haley Joel Osment appeared as Cole Sear in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense. As Shyamalan prepared to shoot the scene in which Cole enters the kitchen, terrified out of his wits, he heard several loud banging noises. The director later discovered that the noise was being made by Osment, slamming himself into the walls to appear appropriately shaken up. NOTE: Haley Joel Osment (who was discovered by casting directors in the play-area of a furniture store) declined to audition for the role of Harry Potter because he felt the books should not be filmed. Among his role models? General George Patton and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
