Isabella, who only spoke Dutch until the age of nine, escaped to freedom in 1826. She changed her name to Sojourner Truth in 1843, believing the Holy Spirit told her to travel and preach the truth. Her most famous speech was “Ain’t I a Woman?” given in 1851 at a Women’s Rights convention in Ohio. She is remembered not only for travelling and preaching, but also as a strong advocate of African American and Women’s Rights. Her grave can be found in Battle Creek, Michigan. • Abraham Lincoln was the 16th US President, as we all well know. But did you know that Lincoln was the first President from the Republican Party? Also, Lincoln was the only President to hold a patent - it was for a device to lift boats over shoals. Lincoln personally invited Frederick Douglass to his inaugural reception in 1865. • Frederick Douglass was born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey in 1818 in Talbot County, Maryland, but even Douglass was never sure about the actual date of his birth. He chose February 14th as his own birthday because his mother used to call him her “little Valentine.” He changed his name from Bailey to Douglass after escaping slavery in 1838. The name Douglass is a variant of the Scottish Douglas and is thought to derive from the Gaelic for “black-green water.” Douglass is most notably remembered for his work with the abolitionist movement and a CNN article named him “one of the abolition movement’s most effective anti-slavery speakers.”
• Samuel Longhorne Clemens was born November 11, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. At age thirteen he left school to become a printer’s apprentice and later became a printer and editorial assistant at his brother Orion’s newspaper. At age seventeen he became a river pilot’s assistant, becoming a licensed river pilot himself in 1858. His pen name, Mark Twain, came from his days on the river. “Mark twain” was a measurement and meant two fathoms, marking the boat clear to pass through that portion of river. Clemens used other pseudonyms, such as “Sieur Louis de Conte” and “Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass.” He is remembered for creating some of American literature’s most loved rascals, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Did you know that it is rumored that Thomas Edison recorded Twain’s voice on a wax cylinder?
• Clara Barton was born on Christmas Day in 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts. She was a nurse for the U.S. Army in the Civil War. While on a trip to Europe, Barton became involved with the Red Cross and upon returning she pioneered a branch in America, which was founded on May 21, 1881 in New York. Clara Barton was the President of the American Red Cross for twenty-two years and retired at age eighty-three.
• The great Native American Sitting Bull was born around 1831 and given the temporary name of Hoka Psice, which means Jumping Badger. Sioux were given temporary names as children and would later take a name that better represented them as their personalities developed. He was well known for his way of thinking things through before acting and would later be known as Tataka Iyotaka, Sitting Bull, for the rest of his life. Sitting Bull is probably best known for his victory over General Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn. He was a holy man among his people and a representative of the strength and wisdom of the Native Americans. He was an avid defender of his land and his people.
• Rosa Parks was born Rosa Louise McCauley on February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. She dropped out of high school to care for her ailing mother but later finished her education and obtained her diploma in 1934. She served as Secretary to the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP. Rosa Parks was the first woman and second African American to be laid in state at the U.S. capital Rotunda in Washington D.C. and was named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century. Her refusal to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama is often remembered as the start of the Civil Rights Movement.
• Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. His cartoon “Steamboat Willie” (1928) was the first cartoon with synchronized sound and “Flowers and Trees” (1932) was the first cartoon to be produced in color and to win an Oscar. He is credited with winning the most Academy Award with twenty-two, having received one or more Academy Awards every year from 1932 until 1965 except for two years. Today, Walt is remembered for encouraging the imagination of children of all ages.

GREAT AMERICAN HEROES (continued):• Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 1,
1929. His grandfather was the founder of the Atlanta NAACP. King held a Ph.D. in systematic theology. He was elected president of the Montgomery Improvement Association during the bus boycott of Montgomery. He delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963 and he was TIME’s Man of the Year that same year. He was an advocate of nonviolent protest and a follower of Gandhian strategies, even once touring India in 1959. He is remembered for his passion and inspiration to all people. “I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.’”
• Sacagawea was the Shoshone woman who became well known for accompanying the Lewis and Clark Expedition. She had been kidnapped from her tribe in her youth and later married French trapper Toussaint Charbonneau. When Charbonneau was hired to accompany the Lewis and Clark expedition as an interpreter, he was asked to bring his wife because she could speak the Shoshone language where Charbonneau could not. While on the trip, Sacagawea gave birth to her son Jean Baptiste. It is often noted by historians that merely the presence of a woman in the travelling party often allayed any apprehension of other Indian tribes they encountered. Any party bringing along a woman and a child indicated peaceful intentions. On the journey the party encountered a tribe of Shoshone Indians led by Sacagawea’s brother Cameahwait, whom Sacagawea had not seen since childhood.

EGYPTWe head back the The Dark Continent this week for a trip into ancient history as we visit the second most populous country in Africa, the land of pharaohs and pyramids. Hold onto your mummy, we’re talking about Egypt. • Its capital is Cairo. It is bordered by the Gaza
Strip, Israel, Sudan, Libya and the Red Sea.• Egypt is the size of Texas plus California,
two times the size of Spain and four times the size of the United Kingdom. This makes Egypt the 38th largest country in the world, but because of the nature of the environment of Egypt, 99% of the population lives in only 5% of this available land. This is because the most fertile and livable land is the land surrounding the Nile. The rest of the land is mostly desert.
• The ancient Egyptian name for the country is kmt, pronounced kemet, which meant “black soil” and referred to the fertile soil surrounding the Nile river. The Egyptian word for desert is deshret, meaning red land.
• Ancient Egypt was divided into two kingdoms: Upper and Lower Egypt. The symbol of Upper Egypt is the blue lotus and Lower Egypt is the papyrus plant.
• The Egyptian system of currency is called a pound, like the United Kingdom.
• Egypt has been inhabited for thousands of years. The earliest known appearance of hieroglyphics dates to about 3200 B.C.
• Ancient Egyptians believed the fertile soils of kmt represented order and the god Horus. Likewise, the barren desert and chaos were products of the god Seth. The Egyptian myths tell that Osiris and Seth were brothers and, after killing Osiris, Seth was banished to the desert after Osiris’s son Horus avenged his father and overturned Seth’s kingship.

EGYPT (continued):• When people think of Egyptian queens, it is usually Cleopatra that
comes to mind. However, the Egyptian queen Hatshepsut was a powerful predecessor to Cleopatra. When her husband, Pharaoh Thutmose II died, Hatshepsut proclaimed herself King. An oracle supported her claim, saying the god Amun-Ra spoke to her and declared her king. She ruled for twenty-two years, during which the land of Egypt thrived. She established trade networks and commissioned hundreds of building projects, including temples at Karnak. Like her predecessors, one of her grandest accomplishments was her own mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri. For years there was no idea as to how Hatshepsut died or where her mummy was located, as there had been a great attempt by later kings to erase Hatshepsut from memory. Her image and cartouche were chiseled off walls and her statues were torn down, making her history hard to pinpoint. However, recent discoveries suggest that a previously unidentified mummy found in the tomb of Hatshepsut’s wet nurse might actually be the powerful queen herself.
• Hatshepsut is also memorable because she is part of the famous King Tut’s family tree. Hatshepsut’s nephew, Thutmose III, was possibly King Tutankamun’s great-great-great grandfather - possibly because archaeologists and historians aren’t 100% sure of Tut’s parentage, though most agree that Tut was likely the son of Akenhaten, Thutmose II’s great-great grandson.
• Akenhaten’s main wife was the famed beauty Queen Nefertiti. The most widely agreed upon mother of Tutankamun is Akenhaten’s minor wife Queen Kiya.
