TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

After work, nothing feels better than a long, hot shower. However, have you ever thought of the water and heating energy consumed to make this possible? Showers equipped with a typical shower head have a water fl ow rate of 2.5 gallons per minute, thus a fi ve-minute shower uses 12.5 gallons. Bump this up to a 15-minute shower and the water usage goes to 37.5 gallons. Recognizing that a typical residential hot water heater has a volume of 40 gallons, a 15-minute shower could easily consume over half of the hot water heater’s volume; heating water requires energy and the larger the water volume to heat, the more energy consumed. For green living, restrict your shower to fi ve minutes or less.

“The New York City Waterfalls,” public art display was in New York City from June 26 - October 13, 2008. It was created by Olafur Eliasson and cost over $15,000,000, paid for by private funding. The four waterfalls fl owed over scaffolding designed to blend in with the surroundings, located along the waterfront areas of Manhattan and Brooklyn, including beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Estimates were that the project could generate up to $55,000,000 for the local economy.

A newspaper photographer called the Niagara Falls airport and

chartered an airplane to photograph the famous falls. He was running late so when he saw a small plane warming up he jumped in with his gear, shut the door and shouted, “Let’s go.” The pilot took off. The photographer asked to be taken over Horseshoe Falls for a good view. “Why?” asked the pilot. “I need to get some shots for my newspaper,” said the photographer. The pilot looking bewildered, said, “So, you’re NOT my fl ight instructor?”

When I was in marketing at a chamber of commerce in Los Angeles, the chamber had at least 17 events annually. These events were breakfasts, luncheons, dinners, golf tournaments, tennis tournaments, etc. I have four suggestions for attending productive events: 1) Make your decision by who is attending rather than which event you most enjoy. 2) Look at the reservation list. 3) Determine who will attend. If those attending a golf tournament are the professionals you need to spend more time with, polish your putter and go! 4) After the tournament, visit the 19th hole. The 19th hole may be where you notice more green.

Use the chamber for commerce

THE CAREFUL EVENT

The governments of Canada and the United States have a treaty, the “1950 Niagara Treaty”, that regulates the amount of water that can be diverted from the normal fl owpath of the Niagara River for hydroelectric power. Because the falls are major tourist attractions for both countries and the lure for tourists is the magnifi cence of the falls, this regulation assures adequate water fl ows over the falls.

• It was Franois VI, duc de La Rochefoucauld and prince de Marcillac, a noted 17th-century French author and memoirist, who made the following sage observation: “Few are agreeable in conversation, because each thinks more of what he intends to say than of what others are saying, and listens no more when he himself has a chance to speak.”

• Rutherford B. Hayes, the country’s 19th president, was the first to install a phone in the White House.

• It was 1948 when the first vinyl musical recording was made. The piece of music so immortalized was Tchiakovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite.”

• Although we tend to think of the bikini as a modern fashion innovation, two-piece bathing suits can be seen in murals in the ancient city of Pompeii.

• According to Romanian tradition, a sure-

fire hangover remedy is tripe soup. In Poland, drinking sour pickle juice is supposed to cure the morning-after agonies. And if you’re in Germany, you should try the local remedy: pickled herring.

• The shortest street on record can be found in the small town of Wick, Scotland. Ebenezer Place is a mere 6 feet, 9 inches long. • Do you suffer from pogonophobia? If so, you probably have some issues with Santa. Pogonophobia is a fear of beards. • If you’re like most Americans, you’ve stolen from your employer -- though probably not much. It seems that 58 percent of your fellow citizens admit to taking office supplies for personal use. • The Hundred Years’ War actually lasted 116 years. • Albert Einstein’s final words are lost to history. He spoke his last words in his birth tongue, German, and it seems that the nurse who was attending him during his last moments spoke only English.***Thought for the Day: “The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.” -- E.E.

Glenrock is located in Central Wyoming at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains nestled along the Deer Creek Tributary System.

Glenrock is rich in history. The Oregon, Bozeman, Texas and California Trails all came together along Deer Creek and the Platte River. The country side still shows many of the signs of the emigrants passage. There are a number of monuments, grave sites and for ts in the surrounding areas. For t Fetterman is 28 miles to the east and For t Casper is 25 miles to the west of Glenrock. There are monuments marking the Deer Creek Station here in Glenrock. The Deer Creek Museum is the perfect place to relive the beginnings of the town.

Before the time of man, the Glenrock area was inhabited by a

different form of life. The dinosaurs roamed throughout the region during the Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods. The prehistory that exists can be seen at the Paleon Museum. The bones that are on display came from the Kola Quarry nor th of Glenrock, the Como Bluffs Quarry near Medicine Bow and from a private ranch near Lusk.

If you would like a little exercise after sightseeing at the museums, Glenrock has a nine hole golf course with splendid vistas of the mountains. There are plenty of areas to fish along Deer Creek and the Platte River, or maybe you’d just like a leisurely walk along “Al’s Way” or a picnic in one of the parks. There are activities for every preference of outdoor enjoyment at your convenience.

DON’T GET WET!In meteorological terms, precipitation is any form of water, such as rain, sleet, snow, or hail that falls to the earth’s surface. We’re looking mostly at rainfall with these wet Tidbits. • Unionville, Maryland holds the record for

the most rainfall in one minute – 1.23 inches (3.12 cm) on Independence Day, July 4, 1956! Hmmm, wonder if it happened during a parade?

• The record for the most rainfall in a day is held by Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Rainfall on March 15, 1952 was 73.62 inches (187 cm).

• The greatest rainfall recorded in a year was 1,041 inches (2,644 cm) from August 1880-1881 in Assam, India.

• India has some of the wettest places on earth. Both Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, which are only 6.2 miles (10 km) apart in the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya, receive more than 433 inches (1,100 cm) annually. Most of their rain comes during monsoon season, May to September. Now that’s a lot of rain!

• Ironically, Cherrapunji is in the Khasi hills at an elevation of 4232 feet (1290 m) above sea level, a land so stressed from deforestation that the soil does not absorb water thus crops grow poorly. Most of the rainfall flows to rain-laden Bangladesh where the water is unneeded!

• Are you feeling drenched? The range of precipitation in the world is from less than 0.1 inch (.025 cm) in some deserts to more than 900 inches (2286 cm) per year in the tropics.
