TIDBITS® ISOVER THE MOON
by Sarah BatesTidbits is over the moon this week as we get our space suits on to talk about all the ins and outs, ups and downs, and everything in between the letters M O O N. So buckle up, get your helmets on and prepare for lift off in 5...4...3...2...1...
• It’s been done many different ways, but Frank Sinatra holds the title for making it the most popular. “Fly Me To The Moon” was written by Bart Howard in 1954. Nat King Cole recorded a version of the song in 1961, and the 1962 “Fly Me To The Moon - Bossa Nova” instrumental version was the only version of the song to rise significantly on the charts. Frank Sinatra didn’t record a version of the song until 1964. Quincy Jones did the arrangement for this version ofthe song and changed the timing to give it a more swing feel. The song is played over the end credits of Clint Eastwood’s movie “Space Cowboys” released in 2000.
• “Fly Me To The Moon” was also the title of a 2008 animated feature about three junior space exploring flies who stow away aboard the Apollo 11 mission inside the helmets of Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins. The film includes the voices of Christopher Lloyd, Tim Curry, Kelly Ripa and Buzz Aldrin. There is also a cameo by Aldrin at the end of the film after the credits.

OVER THE MOON (continued):
• Buzz Aldrin is known for many things. He was the second man to walk on the moon, and he has dedicated his life to promoting space exploration. 2009 marked the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, and to commemorate the event, Aldrin teamed up with Snoop Dogg and Quincy Jones to make “The Rocket Experience,” his rap debut and single. Proceeds from the song go to ShareSpace, a non-profit organization founded by Buzz in 1998.
• A few more lesser known facts about Aldrin: It’s strange but true; Buzz’s mother, Marion Aldrin, was named Marion Moon before she married! Buzz Lightyear, from the animated classic “Toy Story,” was named for Aldrin. One more for the record books: Buzz was born Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. but officially changed his name to Buzz in 1988. The moniker came from his older sister who pronounced the word brother as “buzzer.”
• Does Mare Tranquillitatis mean anything to you? If you took a Latin class, you know that it means Sea of Tranquility. However, if you’re a space buff, you might know that it is the landing sight of the Apollo 11 lunar module. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their famous steps in the Mare Tranquillitatis, making it a famous landmark in American history on July 20, 1969.
• Can you see the Sea of Tranquility from earth? You sure can! The sea, if you hadn’t guessed, isn’t actually a sea but a maria, which is one of the many dark spots we see on the surface of earth’s moon. It’s location will look different depending on which portion of the world you’re in, so be sure to look it up in your local library or favorite search engine.
• Rabbit or man? This depends where you’re from. Many Asian cultures believe the dark marias on the surface of the moon form the shape of a rabbit. There was a time in
England when the shapes were believed to be an old witch carrying a bundle of sticks on her back. Some Muslim cultures believe the name of Muhammed’s son is written on the moon, as Ali would be there to reflect the teachings of Muhammed (the sun) after Muhammed was gone. There is even a part of South East India that believes the face of still-living guru Sathya Sai Baba can be seen in the maria. What do you see?
• Dr. Eugene Shoemaker was a well-known astronomer and astrogeologist in his lifetime. At one point, he was considered as a candidate for an Apollo lunar mission. He also codiscovered the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. However, Dr. Shoemaker is also notably the only human being whose mortal remains have been laid to rest on the moon. A capsule containing his ashes was sent to the moon aboard the Lunar Prospector on July 31, 1999.
• Do you know what a wolf moon is? Or a harvest or ice moon? These names refer to specific full moons in the year. A wolf moon is a full moon that occurs during the month of January, whereas a harvest moon occurs during the month of September. These names originated with the Native American tribes of North America, who named the moons to keep track of the seasons.
• In “More English Fairy Tales” by Joseph Jacobs, there is a tale called The Dead Moon (or The Buried Moon) about the moon. After hearing that monsters came out on nights when she didn’t shine, the moon came down to find out if this was true. She fell into a bog and was trapped. While struggling, her hood kept falling in front of her face, causing her light to flicker. A passing man saw the flashing light in the distance and it warned him of the bog and the monsters. Because she was trapped in a bog and not in the sky, the moon stopped rising for a long time. The people wondered what had happened to her. It was a wise woman who told the peoplewhere to find the buried moon, and at the wise woman’s advice, the people freed the moon.
• Earth’s moon is the fifth largest moon in the solar system, but what’s the largest? That would be Ganymede, a satellite of Jupiter. Ganymede is named after a character in Greek mythology. He was a hero and a Trojan prince. Ganymede the moon was discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610, exactly 400 years ago this past January 10th. One more neat fact: Did you know that the red giant has 63 confirmed moons in all?
• What exactly is a blue moon? Every calendar year, there are approximately twelve full moons, but because the moon cycles every 28 days and doesn’t fit into our monthly pattern, every 2.7 years there is an extra, thirteenth full moon in the year - a blue moon. So, the saying “once in a blue moon” really does mean something that doesn’t happen very often as a blue moon only happens about every 2.7 years. The next blue moon will occur this year on November 21, 2010, but the next one won’t be until August 21, 2013.
• It’s official! As of September 2009, water was discovered on the moon. But don’t rush to get your bathing suits for the first swimming pool on the moon; our satellite is still drier than any dessert on earth. However, it has been discovered that there are very small traces of water on the moon, and that is an advancement for the ages.

AMERICAN IDOL:THEN AND NOW
If you’re like much of America, you enjoy watching “American Idol” every spring. This week, Tidbits takes a look at some of the winners of years past and gives you an update on where they are now.
• We first heard the name Justin Guarini back in the summer of 2002 during the first season of “American Idol.” Idol was originally scheduled during the summer as a replacement show. It first aired on Fox, and Season One is the only season not to air from January to May. Justin was runner-up to Kelly Clarkson in the final episode of that inaugural season. These days, you can find Guarini on the TV Guide Network hosting “Idol Tonight” and “Idol Wrap Up,” as well as providing live coverage of the Grammy and Emmy Awards. Guarini, a Columbus, Georgia, native, married Reina Capodici on September 26, 2009, and continues to work on his career. He has appeared on the “Today Show,” “Larry King Live,” the Style Channel and many more as a returning commentator.
• Speaking of first season favorites, we can’t talk about
Justin without talking about winner Kelly Clarkson. After her win on Season One of “American Idol,” Clarkson sky rocketed to super stardom and is still releasing hit singles. Her most recent album, “All I Ever Wanted” (2009) is the fourth of her albums to date. Clarkson appeared with Guarini in 2003’s “From Justin to Kelly “and has also had acting roles in television’s “American Dreams” and “Reba.” The 27 year old isn’t slowing down, either. She has won two Grammy Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards and four American Music Awards and has continued touring for her “All I Ever Wanted” tour since the beginning of the year. What’s next for Clarkson? We’ll have to wait and see, but we’re sure Idol’s first winner will continue to wow us with her career.
• Another Idol alumni who rose quickly to stardom was Season Four winner Carrie Underwood. An Oklahoma native, Underwood released her first album just one short year after she won Idol back in 2004. She was one of the biggest debuts in country music in recent years, and her albums have continuously produced hit singles on both country and pop charts. Underwood has won four Grammy Awards, 14 American Music Awards and five Billboard Music Awards and just from the release of three albums! Looks like Miss Underwood has many things yet to show
us, too!
• The state of Alabama has played a key role in producing some “American Idol” favorites, included Season Five winner Taylor Hicks. Hicks isn’t the only Alabama native to gain attention through the show. Season Two brought the world’s attention to the big, cuddly teddy bear Ruben Studdard, a Birmingham native. Ruben was followed by Diana DeGarmo in 2004 and Taylor Hicks in 2006, both also Birmingham natives. There was also Huntsville’s, Bo Bice in 2005. Studdard and Hicks were the only two Alabama natives to win the show, although DeGarmo and Bice were both runners-up in their respective seasons.
• The sixth season brought around Jordin Sparks, a smiling girl who rose to fame when she won “American Idol” in 2007. Sparks, a Phoenix, Arizona, native, is the daughter of former NFL quarterback Phillippi Sparks. To date, Sparks is the youngest winner of American Idol; she was 17 when she won. Something you might not know about Sparks, she actually auditioned twice for the show. She was also the opening act for the Jonas Brothers in the North American section of their 2009 World Tour.

PROUD MEMBER OF THE BROWARD COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
THE LINCOLN CONSPIRACIES
There are several conspiracy theories surrounding the death of America’s sixteenth President Abraham Lincoln. In this article, Tidbits highlights these theories as well as other fascinating facts.
• Our first conspiracy is baffling and is one many might not have heard of: the theory that Andrew Johnson was involved. There was a purported letter from Wilkes left for Johnson at his residence in a Washington D.C. hotel. It is said that even Mary Todd Lincoln believed Johnson was involved in the murder of her husband and members of Congress had an official Assassination Committee formed to connect Johnson to the murder, though no incriminating evidence was ever found.
• In some versions, this theory continues further to include the actual convicted conspirators not just as a fall back, but as partners in crime with Johnson in the murder of Lincoln. This list of conspirators includes the convicted and executed, including Mary Surratt, the only female tried in the assassination and the first woman to be executed by the federal government. Edwin Stanton, Lincoln’s Secretary of War, is also later implicated in a book by Otto Eisenschiml. In actuality, Stanton was loyal to the president and stayed by his side as he slowly died in the Petersen House across the street from Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C. Stanton famously uttered the line “Now he belongs to the ages,” when Lincoln finally passed away the morning after he was shot.
• Other theories point to a grand conspiracy formed by the Confederacy. Not only does this theory pin Lincoln’s assassination on the South, it also claims the Confederates planned to blow up the White House. This theory claims that Booth, when he found out the mission to blow up the White House had failed, took matters into his own hands by assassinating Lincoln in Ford’s Theater.
• Robert Redford’s film “The Conspirator” is about Mary Surratt’s role in the murder of Lincoln. The film has an all-star cast, and is set in Washington D.C. in the spring of 1865. However, the movie wasn’t filmed anywhere near Washington D.C. Redford chose scenic Savannah, Georgia, to represent 1865 Washington D.C., and locals of and tourists to Savannah were privy to Redford’s movie sets from October to December of 2009. Scenes of Surratt’s boarding house were filmed at a residence on the corner of Barnard and Taylor Streets, where cobblestone streets were covered with dirt and lined with horse drawn carriages. Surratt’s actual boarding house is currently a Chinese restaurant named “Wok and Roll,” and as of August 2009, is included on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
• Most historians today agree that the conspirators originally planned on kidnapping the President instead of actual murder. It was only after the South surrendered to the North that Booth and the conspirators turned to assassination.
• Did you know there were even plots to kidnap Lincoln after his death? The 1876 plot was to steal Lincoln’s body from its tomb and hold it for a hefty ransom. The plot was ultimately foiled, and the villains caught, but they got so far as to actually make it into the tomb where Lincoln’s body was kept. Because of this, Lincoln’s casket was moved to a muddy grave in a room beneath the actual tomb. They dug a hole, buried the president’s casket and covered the ground with some lumber. The president remained here until 1901, when his remains, and those of his family, were permanently laid to rest in a rebuilt tomb.

Trying to GO GREENTry These Tips
Clip tip:Mow your lawn when it’s dry, and leave the clippings lying on the grass to break down and feed the lawn underneath.
Thirsty work:If you have a water cooler at work, use a glass to fill up instead of using paper or plastic cups from the dispenser.
Get going:Drive off as soon as you start your car’s engine. Modern engines don’t need much time to warm up, so idling creates unnecessary pollution and mechanical wear.
Pull the plug:Your mobile only takes a couple of hours to charge, so don’t leave it plugged in overnight.
Every flush counts:An estimated 30% of household water usage is flushed down the toilet. If your toilet is more than 30 years old, upgrading to a low-consumption toilet can save you up to 4 gallons per flush.
Switch off to lather:Half the time we’re in the shower is spent avoiding the water while we soap up - so switch off while you lather for big water and energy savings.
Stock up:Use water you’ve boiled your veggies in to make stocks, soups or, pour it on your garden when it’s cooled.

PICNIC POTATO SALAD
Potato salad is always a hit at a casual barbecue, and this simple recipe of red-skinned potatoes with a tangy mayonnaise dressing is a winner! Our secret? First toss the warm potatoes with a vinaigrette so they can absorb lots of flavor, then stir with the creamy dressing to coat.
3 pounds (about 12) medium red-skin potatoes, cut into 1-inch chunks1/4 cup distilled white vinegar1 tablespoon olive oil2 teaspoons spicy brown mustard1 1/4 teaspoons salt1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper1/2 cup mayonnaise1/3 cup whole milk2 small celery stalks, thinly sliced2 green onions, minced
1. In 5- to 6-quart saucepot, place potatoes and enough water to cover; heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 8 to 10 minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender.2. Meanwhile, in large bowl, with wire whisk, mix vinegar, oil, mustard, salt and pepper.3. Drain potatoes. Add hot potatoes to bowl with vinai-grette; gently stir with rubber spatula until evenly coated and vinaigrette is absorbed. Cool 15 minutes.4. In small bowl, with wire whisk, mix mayonnaise and milk until smooth. Add mayonnaise mixture, celery and green onions to potatoes. Gently stir with rubber spatula until mixed. Serve warm or cover and refrigerate up to 1 day. Serves 12.

Top each piece with a full tablespoon of topping mixture. Serves 8.

“Our 4-year-old twins were recently in my sister’s wedding as flower girls. To get them used to their outfits, the dress-shop owner suggested they wear the dresses in 10-, 20- and 30-minute sessions in the two weeks preceding the wedding -- during activities where they would not stain or otherwise damage the dress. They were more comfortable in their clothes after having ‘practiced,’ and they didn’t pull at their clothes and fidget much.” -- T.F., via e-mail
• Here’s a tip for a quick pin cushion: Use a clean Styrofoam tray. The pins go in straight, and are quite secure.
• “When we’re playing card games with the kids, they use a large chip clip to hold their ‘hand’ together. It works pretty well.” -- W.R. in Ohio
• Pizza cutters make great sandwich trimmers. You easily can trim the crust and cut the sandwich. They’re also great for cutting up hot dogs.
• To attack cobwebs or dust high walls, cover a broom head with a pillowcase. You’ll get better coverage, and the pillowcase can easily be tossed in the wash.
• “We don’t have a mudroom in our house, so to catch water and mud on days of heavy rain, I have a clean plastic shower curtain that I place on the floor of the entranceway. We leave wet, muddy shoes on it, and it even can catch drips from umbrellas and such. The whole thing can be dragged to the garage if necessary.” -- I.S. in Alabama

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please say something about migraine headaches. I think that’s what I have. They come on fast, and the pain feels like something is pulsating in my head. I throw up with every headache. Bright lights make things worse. Does all this sound like a migraine to you? Someone told me there’s always a warning before a migraine starts. I have no warning. I’ve used Tylenol, but it doesn’t do much for me. What is the treatment? Can they be prevented? -- L.G.
ANSWER: Your headaches have many of the characteristics of a migraine headache. The warning mentioned to you is an aura. The aura usually precedes a migraine. It can be flashing zigzag lines, peculiar sensations -- often in the hands -- trouble finding the right words to speak or weakness of a group of muscles. Only 20 percent of migraine patients have an aura, so it’s not an indispensable migraine sign.
Nausea and vomiting are common migraine symptoms. Seventy percent of migraine patients have a one-sided headache that they describe as throbbing or a dull ache. It lasts from four hours to three days. People with migraines are very sensitive to light and sound, so they seek a dark, quiet room to lie down.
Stress, overexertion, sleep deprivation and hunger can provoke a migraine. Some foods and drinks can do the same. Alcohol (especially red wine); caffeine; pickles; bananas; yogurt; avocados; aged cheeses; pickled or marinated chicken, beef or fish; salami; pastrami; bacon; pepperoni; hot dogs; and the taste enhancer monosodium glutamate are on the list of possible migraine inducers.
Medicines for treating a migraine abound. Tylenol, aspirin and drugs like ibuprofen take care of mild migraines. For more severe ones, triptans are the standard treatment. They include Imitrex, Axert, Frova, Zomig, Amerge and Maxalt. An older medicine, ergotamine, still has a place in treatment
For migraine prevention, propranolol, verapamil and amitriptyline are prescribed if the headaches occur often and disrupt life.
The headache booklet discusses the causes and treatment of the more common kinds of headaches. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 901W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

asked me why I didn’t jump up and hit her back. I heard if you hit somebody choking on the back, it could force the food farther down. Did I do the right thing? -- R.M.
ANSWER: The Red Cross has changed its instructions on how to handle a choking adult. It now recommends leaning the person forward and giving five blows to the back between the shoulder blades with the heel of the hand. If that doesn’t dislodge the food, then start the Heimlich maneuver.
Dr. Heimlich was never in favor of back thumps. He believed it could cause the food to drop farther down the windpipe -- the trachea.

Help Kitty Think Inside the Box
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Regarding the letter from a reader (Frustrated in Philadelphia) whose cat was soiling on top of her bed: I didn’t get the impression that the person was keeping the cat in a cage as a matter of course, but rather was doing that, or considering doing it, as a result of the kitty relieving herself on the bed.
Therefore, I wonder if the kitty wasn’t doing that because of a urinary tract infection or other health problem, or didn’t like the type of cat litter used, the location of the litter box or something else in the home that was probably stressing her. Just wanted to bring up these possibilities, for what it’s worth. -- Jonathan N., Mayer, Ariz.
DEAR JONATHAN: My thanks -- advice and suggestions from my readers is always welcome and worthwhile! Frustrated in Philadelphia should certainly discuss the possibility of a health issue, like a urinary tract infection, with her cat’s veterinarian, and bring her in for a complete checkup.
Litter-box location can be an issue with some cats, as can multiple cats sharing a litter box. An owner dealing with a cat “going” in areas other than the litter box could try placing a clean litter box over the area of the latest mess (after cleaning it up of course) and then gradually move it away and back to a more desirable location.
Cats also react to stresses we humans might not notice or see as a stressful situation. Pay close attention to a cat’s behavior, particularly when it’s exhibiting problem behaviors like soiling outside the litter box, and see if it is reacting to a person, a new item in the home or something else.
