Montgomery Ward, the Chicago-baseddepartment-store chain, had been buyingandgivingawaychildren’scoloringbooksas Christmas gifts for their customers foryears,butin1939decidedtocreateitsownbook to savemoney.The retailer gave theassignmenttooneofitsemployees,34-yearoldcopywriterRobertL.May,whopennedthestoryof“RudolphtheRed-NosedRein-deer.”Some2.4millioncopieswerehandedout that year.Maydrewonthestory“TheUglyDuckling”andalsoonhisownbackground(hewasof-ten taunted as a child for being shy, smalland frail) to create the story of the misfitreindeer. Several names were considered,includingRollo(toocheerful)andReginald(tooBritish),beforeMaysettledonRudolphashisreindeer’sname.ConcernsaboutRu-dolph’srednose(animageassociatedwithdrunkards)alsowereovercome.Written as a poem in themeter of “’TwastheNightBeforeChristmas,”Maytestedthe
storyonhis4-yearolddaughterBarbara,wholovedit.AtaboutthesametimethatMaywascreatingRu-dolph,hiswifedied,leavinghimdeeplyindebtwithmedical bills. However, he was able to persuadeMontgomery Ward’s corporate president, SewellAvery,toturnthecopyrightovertohiminJanuary1947,ensuringMay’sfinancialsecurity.Hequithiscopywriting job in 1951 but would later return toMontgomeryWard,where heworked until his re-tirement in 1971. May died in 1976.“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” was printedcommercially in 1947, and in 1948 a nine-minutecartoon of the storywas shown in theaters.WhenMay’s brother-in-law, songwriter Johnny Marks,wrote the lyrics and melody for the song “Rudolph theRed-NosedReindeer,”theRudolphphenomenonwasborn.ThesongwasrecordedbyGeneAutryin1949andshottoNo.1onthecharts,selling2mil-lioncopiesthatyear.“RudolphtheRed-NosedRein-deer”wouldgoontobecomeoneofthebest-sellingChristmas songs of all time, second only to BingCrosby’s“WhiteChristmas.”May’s story ofRudolph differed from the oneweknow today,made famousby JohnnyMarks’ songand the 1964 television special narrated by BurlIves.Intheoriginalstory,RudolphwasnotrelatedtoSanta’sreindeeranddidnotliveattheNorthPole,butinanordinaryreindeervillage.Hewaswell-ad-justed and not regarded by his parents as a shameful embarrassment.HewasdiscoveredwhenSantano-ticedaredglowcomingfromRudolph’sroomashedeliveredpresentstoRudolph’shouse.Worriedthata thickening fog would keep him from completing hisChristmasEverounds,SantatappedRudolphtolead his reindeer team.(c)2010KingFeaturesSynd.,Inc.
