As we move into the peak of the holiday season, it's more important than ever to make sure your pets are safe, stress-free and healthy. Here are a few tips to help your pets have a happy holiday:

Ñ Avoid using decorations like tinsel, which can be ingested by cats and puppies attracted to its shine and crinkly sound. Hang small ornaments and glass balls high on the tree and place larger, sturdier ornaments on the lower part.

Ñ Cover electrical cords and light strands to prevent pets from chewing on them. A piece of PVC pipe or a thick piece of spare carpet, or even duct tape, can

cover exposed runs along or behind the tree.• Before a party or large get-together, create a safe haven for your pets

in a room closed off from the rest of the house. Put their bed and blankets, toys, water and food in there, and check on them regularly.

• Make sure candies and chocolates stay off the floor so that pets can't ingest them. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs.

• Use toddler gates to keep your pets out of areas like the kitchen, so they don't get into holiday baking.

• Make sure to keep pets on a regular feeding, walking and play schedule. This will help them deal with the more stressful period of the holidays.

• Monitor your pet's behavior during the holidays. If they appear lethar-gic, yelp in pain when you touch their stomach, nip at you when you reach for them, or show other signs of stress or illness, contact your veterinarian immediately.

This is a GREAT time to buy!• On Jan. 6, 1759, a 26-year-old George Washington marries Martha Dandridge Custis. Historical documents have revealed that Martha may not have been the great love of Washington's life. He wrote cryptic yet passionate love letters to Sally Fairfax, the wife of his friend George Fairfax.

• On Jan. 1, 1863, a farmer named Daniel Freeman submits the first claim under the new Homestead Act for a property near Beatrice, Neb. By the 1890s, many homesteaders found that farming 160 acres of such dry land was nearly impossible. At least half of the original homesteaders abandoned their claims.

• On Jan. 3, 1924, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workers discover the solid-gold coffin holding the mummy of the boy-king Pharaoh Tutankhamen, preserved for more than 3,000 years.

• On Jan. 5, 1945, Japanese pilots receive the first order to become kamikaze, meaning

• On Jan. 4, 1965, in his State of the Union address, President Lyndon Johnson lays out for Congress a list of legislation needed to achieve his plan for a Great Society. His list included the creation of Medicare/Medicaid, Head Start, the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act.

• On Dec. 31, 1972, Roberto Clemente, future Hall of Fame baseball player, is killed along with four others when the cargo plane in which he is traveling crashes off the coast of Puerto Rico. At the end of September, Clemente had gotten his 3,000th hit in the final game of the season for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

• On Jan. 2, 1980, in response to the December 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, President Jimmy Carter asks the Senate to postpone action on the SALT II nuclear weapons treaty. Carter feared that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan could lead to the USSR gaining control over much of the world's oil supplies.

• In Singapore, one of the colorful customs is training birds for singing competitions. It's not always just a hobby, though; for some, it's a serious -- and costly -- business. A single well-trained bird might sell for as much as $60,000.

• If you're an oenophile -- that's an aficionado of wine -- you probably won't be surprised to learn that as the cost of a wine goes up, so does a drinker's appreciation of that wine. It seems that it's not all about the quality of the vintage, though: In a recent study, tasters

by Samantha Weaver

were offered two samples of the same wine, but each sample was labeled with a different price. The tasters overwhelmingly preferred the more expensive vintage.

A worldwide study has concluded that there really is a re-lationship between diet and the risk of cardiovascular disease for patients who are taking drugs for prevention of secondary events. More than 31,000 high-risk seniors in 40 countries were assessed for quality of diet. A higher-quality diet re-sulted in a lower risk of recurring cardiovascular events in people age 55 and older who are already taking medication for cardiovascular disease or who have diabetes.

Here’s the big news: The risk of dying from a heart-re-lated event was reduced by 35 percent. A healthy diet also meant a 14 percent lower risk for new heart attacks, a 28 percent reduction in risk for congestive heart failure and 19 percent cut in risk for stroke.

In other words, taking medication for cholesterol and blood pressure isn’t enough. The same goes for beta block-ers, aspirin and other medications commonly prescribed for cardiovascular disease. We have to eat right to promote heart health.

Diet should emphasize vegetables, fruits and grains, and more fish than meat. Ask your doctor if the American Heart Association diet is appropriate for you. It includes:

Fruits and vegetables: At least 4.5 cups/dayOily fish: Two 3.5-ounce servings/weekWhole grains: Three 1-ounce servings/daySodium: Less than 1,500 mg/dayNuts, legumes, seeds: At least four servings/weekSugared drinks: No more than 36 ounces/weekProcessed meats: No more than two servings/weekSaturated fat: Less than 7 percent of total intake. For more information, go online to www.heart.org.

Paying off a mortgage early can be as easy as making an extra principal payment each month. That money goes to the end of the mortgage term, and cancels the inter-est that would be due then. Making extra payments, especially early in a mortgage, can have stunning results, with years shaved off the length of the mortgage.

When it comes to paying off a mortgage early, however, there are those who are strongly on one side of the fence or the other. While some claim it’s a great idea, others say it’s not. Here are the arguments on both sides.

Don’t pay off a mortgage early:--You’ll lose the mortgage interest deduction on your taxes.--You’ll miss out on the low mortgage rates available now.--You may be hit with pre-payment penalties. (Read the fine print on your loan

papers, especially if you have a refinance. Does it say that you’ll incur a penalty if you pay off early?)

--You won’t have spare cash for emergencies if you spend it all on extra mortgage payments.

Pay off a mortgage early:--The mortgage is typically the largest monthly payment a consumer makes. Once

the mortgage is paid off, you’ll have the room to pursue other financial interests, including putting it all in savings or paying off other debt.

--You’ll own your home. As long as you keep up with taxes, insurance and re-pairs, the home is yours.

The truth is that your individual situation will indicate whether it’s good for you to pay off a mortgage. Some thoughts to consider:

If you hope to retire at a certain time and know your retirement income will make it hard for you to continue making mortgage payments, it makes sense to pay off the mortgage while your income is still adequate to do so.

If you can save for your children’s college, put money into savings and still put extra money on your mortgage, it makes sense to pay early.

Go online to mortgage calculators and do a few “what if” scenarios to see how many years can be shaved off your mortgage with varying extra payments. Even an extra $50 will have visible results.

At the time of this writing, it’s being discussed whether to cancel the mortgage interest tax deduction on the Schedule A. Keep an eye on this. Your real savings from having a mortgage interest deduction depend on your tax bracket.

Q: I am dying over here, suffering from “Being Human” withdrawals. Can you tell me when my favorite supernatural show will return to Syfy? -- Audrina R., Seattle

A: “Being Human” begins its 13-episode third season on Monday, Jan. 14, with an episode titled “It’s a Shame About Ray.” I asked series star Kristen Hager, who plays newbie werewolf Nora, if that title bodes well for her, since when we last saw Nora and Ray, they were in a standoff, the screen faded to black, and then we heard a gunshot.

Kristen told me: “You’re most likely assuming correctly, but you’ll have to tune in to find out. Season three begins a year and a half after season two’s finale. There are a couple of new characters that are introduced in the first two episodes and recur throughout the season who are wonderful.

“For example, the twins’ father comes looking for them, and he’s played by Xander Berkley, who’s a wonderful actor to get to work with. That’s a very big story line for Josh and Nora. There are some new supernatural elements that are excit-ing. The show went to some really dark places in season two, and although it still does, I find that

Kristen Hager

a lot of the fun that was in season one is back. In my opinion, this is the best season.”

• • •Q: Everywhere I go online, I keep reading all

about the “feud” between “American Idol” judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, but all I am inter-ested in is the actual show. When does it start back up? -- Julie W., via e-mail

A: The 12th season of America’s No. 1 reality singing competition airs on Fox beginning Jan. 16 at 8/7c, with the always-entertaining audition

shows. Mariah and Nicki join fel-low new judge Keith Urban with mainstays Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest, as they search high and low for America’s next singing sensation. Personally, I hope they find the next William Hung.

***Q: I saw an article for a movie

starring Keri Russell called “Aus-tenland,” and it looks really good. When will it be in theaters? -- Anna Y., via e-mail

A: “Austenland” will debut in January at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. If it’s received well, it could find a dis-

tributor and open to a wider audience by spring or summer. The sooner the better, because I agree with you that this one looks like a winner.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please help. I have had two colonoscopies with 10 polyps found -- half and half, both kinds. I noticed on my medical bill that I am at high risk. I was told that some new medicine might be available soon. I’m very scared. What could help me? -- R.H.

ANSWER: A polyp is a growth of cells projecting from the lining of a structure. In this case, the struc-ture is the colon. Close to 90 percent of polyps do not become cancers. Fifty percent of the population older than 60 has at least one polyp.

Ten percent of polyps are adenomatous polyps, ones with a potential of becoming cancer. I take it that some of your polyps were of this variety, and that’s why you are at “high risk.” Having those polyps removed eliminates the present cancer risk. Adenomatous polyp size is one factor involved in judging these polyps’

threat. Those larger than 2 cm (0.8 inches) have a 40 percent chance of transforming into cancer. The mi-croscopic appearance of these polyps’ cells is given the designation of high-grade or low-grade. High-grade cells also increase the risk of cancer.

Actually, you are sitting pretty. You’ve had all your polyps removed. The fact that some of yours put you into the category of high risk only means that the doctor will work out for you a schedule for future colonoscopies. Those scope exams will disclose if any new polyps have formed. You are less likely to develop colon cancer than are people who have never had such an exam. I don’t know about the medicine you speak of.

Cutting back on red and processed meats (hot dogs and other luncheon meats), losing weight, decreasing the fat in your diet, cutting back on alcohol consump-tion, increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables you eat and increasing dietary fiber are things that diminish the likelihood of colon cancer. I have to be candid. Some authorities say these changes are not as protective as they’re made out to be. They are, however, conducive to good general health.

The booklet on colon cancer explains this common ailment in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 505W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

DONOHUE: I have had genital herpes for many years. I

take a lysine pill every day, which can be bought over the counter at all drugstores. I get an outbreak maybe once or twice a year.

Doctors don’t know this, I guess, and they prescribe medicine rather than use home remedies. -- R.Z.

ANSWER: Lysine treatment for herpes infections, including cold sores, is widely known. The fly in the ointment is that, for most, it doesn’t work successfully as it has for you. There is some scientific basis for ly-sine. It’s an amino acid, one of the building blocks for proteins. Lysine blocks the action of arginine, another amino acid, necessary for herpes viruses to replicate. That’s the theoretical reason for using lysine.

For five years, Jimmie Johnson ruled the Sprint Cup Series. He didn't go away in 2011-12, but he didn't win any champi-onships, either.

Tony Stewart won his third championship -- and first in six years -- in 2011, and his razor-sharp duel with Carl Edwards provided the 10-race Chase with its all-time classic, but Stewart was a throwback, and as many were quick to point out, over seven seasons, the sport had only two champions, Johnson (2006-07-08-09-10) and Stewart (2005, '11).

In a span of three years, NASCAR has produced an unprecedented achievement -- Johnson's fifth straight title -- a memorable championship by one of the sport's more popular stars (Stewart), and the emergence of a new and unexpected superstar.

Next, all must adjust to changes because a new car -- Generation 6, or G6 -- will debut,

Another change, of course, is the departure of Dodge, which bowed out in spite of winning a championship in its final year.

Keselowski and Penske Racing will switch to Ford next season. Perhaps, given that all the cars are chang-ing, it's a good time. Keselowski has a new teammate in Joey Logano, who won twice in four full seasons with Joe Gibbs' Toyota powerhouse.

Each number 1-9 is assigned a color, and you solve the puzzle as normal, excepting you color in the box to denote your answer. When it’s all finished, she says, “it looks like a colorful quilt.”

• If the vegetables you’re cooking give off an unpleasant smell, grab a small saucepan and simmer a bit of plain vinegar while cooking. It will negate the smell, and leave your house smelling pleasantly like mealtime afterward.

Q: I have a full set of Russel Wright dinnerware in the American modern. I love the simplicity of the pattern, and I’d like to know a little more about the company. -- Susan, Batavia, Ill.

A: Russel Wright was one of America’s most creative industrial designers and was instrumental in creating several lines of dinnerware, glassware and aluminum items. All are extremely popular with collectors. The “American Modern” pattern was manufactured at the Steubenville Pottery Company in 1939 and production continued until about 1959.

Pieces of this pattern in White, Bean brown, Cantaloupe and Glacier Blue are especially desir-able. Typical prices are mug, $50; coffee pot, $150; refrigerator jar, $160; and 10-inch dinner plate, $10. If any are in the colors mentioned earlier, values would double.

If you can track down a copy of “The Collectors Encyclopedia of Russel Wright Designs” by Ann Kerr, get it, since is one of the better references.

• • •Q: I have sent you three letters but have not

seen my question answered in your column. Why? -- Unsigned but postmarked in Leland, Fla.

A: I don’t answer anonymous letters. If you re-quest my help, you should at least have the cour-tesy of sharing your name with me. A telephone number also is helpful, so if I have any questions I can contact you. After a question is answered in this column, the original letter is destroyed in my shredder, guaranteeing the writer’s anonymity. There is no need for such secrecy.

• • •Q: I have a vase marked “R.S. Poland” that I

purchased in a consignment shop for $25. I can’t find the mark in any of my reference books. -- Laura, Willmar, Minn.

A: “R.S. Poland” is a mark attributed to Rein-hold Schlegelmilch’s factory in Tilliwitz, Silesia. I think your vase is post World War II. Many of the vases produced by this company often sell well above $500.

Q: I have 12 postcards from the New York World’s Fair of 1939. What would they be worth? -- Josie, Ormond Beach, Fla.

A: There were millions of postcards printed and sold during the fair. Most sets sell in the $15 to $25 range, depending on quality and views.

“Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm: A New English Version”

by Philip Pullman(The Penguin Group, $27.95)Reviewed by Ealish Waddell

When the Grimm brothers published their first collection of German folk legends in the early 19th century, they were participating in an appreciation of the art of storytelling that connects the hamlets of the Black Forest directly to the TV and movie screens of today.

This enduring power has a champion in Philip Pullman, an accomplished author of children’s fantasy, including the acclaimed “Dark Materials” trilogy. Here he applies his own straightforward, slightly ominous pen to rewriting 50 original Grimm texts, couching the narratives in more modern phrases and explanations while maintaining their mythic vigor and timeless resonance.

As a writer, Pullman has a reputation for refusing to spare his young readers the nasty sides of life, which makes him a good fit for the often dark material. The biggies are here, like “Cinderella,” “Snow White” and “Little Red Rid-ing Hood,” but Pullman also reaches deep into the vault for some less common stories, from the gruesome “The Girl With No Hands” to the delightfully weird (albeit doomed) trio of “The Mouse, the Bird and the Sausage.”

A brief bit of commentary is included after each tale, touching on some of the history and archetypes of the work, the evolutions it has gone through, and what it might be trying to say. But, independent of analysis or interpretation, Pullman states that his guiding principle in compiling this anthology was always simply to spin a good yarn. To this author, the telling of the story is just as vital as the story itself.

The teller of ancient tales has a chance -- even a duty, Pullman says -- to freshen up old ideas with new infu-sions of meaning. These are stories elastic enough to have endured through centuries of reinvention, as they will no doubt withstand many centuries more.
