Slide 2 Tidehaven High School Mrs. Anderson El Maton, TX Matagorda County Graci Huddleston Slide 3 First organized to be the Hurd Land Company on May 25, 1908 Was bought to become the 3rd northern cattle company, joining the: Ace of Clubs Ranch and Slough Ranch ORIGINS The Collegeport public library Slide 4 Missouri Pacific rail line station that put Collgegport on the map EARLY BEGINNINGS Collgeport post office that opened in 1909 Slide 5 By 1912 the population grew to 496 It had a business mens league of 90 members A womans club of 86 members Just a few of the pioneer families include the: Bachelder, Corporon, Franzen, and Merck THE PEOPLE OF EARLY COLLEGEPORT First Federated Church of Collegeport Slide 6 Grand opening on May 25, 1909 Many pioneers spent their first nights in the hotel Luxurious hotel that would accommodate 100 guests The average daily rate was $2 HOTEL COLLEGEPORT View from the east side Slide 7 49 boys and girls were enrolled when the college opened on September 21, 1907 The students could work in self help departments that included: The university farm The citrus and fig farm The laundry GULF COAST UNIVERSITY OF INDUSTRIAL ARTS Slide 8 Many students did the laundry for the hotel and some townspeople They also sold 100 loaves of bread daily The girls took voice and piano lessons Dinner consisted of steak, potatoes, rice, and a roll THE STUDENTS CONT.
