Carlisle units all Sold For those residents that have been keeping an eye on the progress of the sale of our Carlisle development, I am really pleased to report that all of the 32 units have now been sold. We knew that we had a great product at Carlisle and our research clearly showed us that these units would appeal to a more general and broader demographic, we therefore knew that they would sell. However, the speed with which they did sell certainly surpassed our initial hopes and expectations. I would like to pass on my sincere appreciation and thanks to the team at Welsh Real Estate, a locally based real estate company who were the sales agents for this project. Chantal Ricupero the sales project leader and her support team did a resounding job, worked tirelessly and gave their full and undivided attention to the Carlisle sales effort, and the results clearly speak for themselves. I would certainly recommend the Welsh Real Estate team to anyone who is considering buying or selling property in and around the Carlisle, Bentley or Victoria Park locality. New Board Member on board As you all know our Board performs a wonderful role in providing SwanCare Group with a high level focus on our strategic direction and ensures that we continue to operate with a high level of governance and adherence to corporate regulations and requirements. one that I know our residents thoroughly enjoy and look forward to. This year there is a slight departure from the normal proceedings in that we won’t be announcing the Villager of the Year awards at this event. It has been decided that the Villager of the Year awards will be incorporated into the annual volunteers day event, which is held in the first week of December each year. By the time that this Tidings hits the streets, the WA Day Event will have been concluded, however, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the organisers for the event, I am sure that it was, as usual, a wonderful evening and allowed us all to reminisce on what a fantastic part of Australia we are all so lucky to live in. Another event which has also started to gather significance in the annual calendar is the “Biggest Morning Tea”, which is held on the 24th May each year. SwanCare Group is really proud to join in with thousands of others all around Australia to celebrate this event and help to raise vital funds for the Cancer Council. To Annemarie Kluvers and the activities team at Kingia for organising the event, and to all those residents that attended and contributed to this worthy cause, a huge thank you to you all.
Best WishesCongratulations goes to Mrs de Burgh who celebrated her 100th Birthday on 7th May. We also extend our congratulations to Mr & Mrs Sinclair who celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on 9th May. Both are impressive milestones.
Extended Periods of Absence from the VillageIf residents at our communities at Australind and Bentley are planning to have extended periods of leave from their village, can you please ensure that administration is advised of your absence. It is really important from a safety and security aspect that we are made aware that your unit is going to be unoccupied for an extended period of time. We generally leave it up to your own personal discretion as to what you consider to be a lengthy period of absence, I would suggest however, as a rule of thumb that an absence in excess of 4 days would warrant notification to administration. And finally, Mrs Janet Tucker, a wonderful resident of Bentley Park now residing with us at our Waminda Care Centre, took the opportunity to reflect on all that Bentley Park and SwanCare Group means to her and she came up with the following poem. I feel that she has captured the essence of our community, and as my conclusion to this month’s article, I would like to share Janet’s fabulous and heartfelt words with you, see you around the village …

Bentley Park ShowIT’S CHOCOLATE TIME! Our chocolates will be on sale from 12th June and we look forward to helping you satisfy your chocolate cravings, and at the same time, raising money to help with the cost of prize money and trophies. They are still just $1 each. I’d like to see more entries in some of our sections this year, particularly the Christmas Decorations, Recycled article and Photography. Homemade and inexpensive Christmas decorations are often featured in magazines and so be on the lookout for ideas. Our library has plenty of magazines for you to look through and borrow. Turn some recycled article into some useful or beautiful new ‘THING’. Visit our wonderful Op shop and get inspired. I’m sure NEARLY EVERYONE could take some photos on holidays, in the village or of their family. If you already make items for a charity, or if you have always meant to but haven’t got around to it, how about making some in time for our Show and display them, so that we can admire them before you send them off to your favourite charity. There is the Uthando Doll Project, Teddy Bears for St John Ambulance, toys for the needy, clothing for King Edward Hospital or Princess Margaret Hospital – so many worthy causes. Theatre Go-ers ClubOpen to all residents our group is free to join – just buy a ticket! On Friday 26th July we again visit the Kalamunda Theatre to see: AND EVERMORE SHALL BE SO By Norman Robbins A Thriller, A murder mystery with more than a touch of humour. Taking its title from the traditional song Green Grow the Rushes O, the play explores the events surrounding a murder which took place four years previously and how strangely the song lyrics seem to fit so well with the circumstances. The action focuses on the repercussions that can be felt where there is “something wrong with the village ... a sense of evil about it ...” An author, cousin of the vicar’s wife, arrives, having been encouraged to write a book about the murder. The story twists and turns, leaving the audience guessing until the very last speech of the play. Tickets at $21 (cash with order) will go on sale at 8.15 am on Monday 24th June inside the Stratton Centre near the village shop. Tickets include bus pick up & return, a reserved seat, sherry/port/juice on arrival. Tea/coffee will be available for purchase at the interval. Bus pick up time will be 6.55pm. Bentley Park Social Club
The Autumn Afternoon Tea held on Sunday, 5th May was a lovely, chatty afternoon for all attendees with plenty of good food and good company available. Tickets were sold in double quick time for the Western Australia Day Dinner on Saturday, 1st June and ‘The Madhattons’ are expected to be a hit again, with a floor show by the ‘Hog Hill Boys’. As explained on the flyer and at the Dinner, the ‘Villager of the Year Awards’ will be presented at the Volunteers’ Breakfast later in the year, as an integral section of that event, so please keep in mind that the Social Club will be requesting the names of candidates in the next few months. The July event will be something slightly different: a Concert by a multi-talented, multi-cultural group of four. Further information will be forwarded in late June. The Op Shop continues to do very well, despite some bad weather, with winter clothing and various items of furniture being the main items sought. If you have any furniture you are thinking of donating, please pick up a form from the Op. Shop, fill it out and return it there, so the items may be assessed for sale suitability, as donated items are sometimes over-large and space is often at a premium. The Paper Recycling firm is due to revisit us, as the shed is again full. The amount of paper for recycling is being assisted by residents in Kingia, who provide bundles of paper correctly assembled as part of their therapy but also, as they like to give something back to the Village. Some people who live in streets adjacent to the shed also leave papers for bundling, and of course, every little helps. We look forward to seeing you at upcoming events. Stratton Luncheon/ConcertPeter & Shirley continue to organise and host a
Luncheon Concert at the Stratton Centre throughout
2013, on the first Friday of each month from February
to December, 11:30am – 2:30pm.
Entertainers have been arranged for each of these
months. These functions comprise of a Fish & Chip
meal served at the table – wine & soft drinks with an
hour concert by quality performers – afternoon tea
or coffee with cakes. The all-inclusive cost is $10. To

Where can my Gopher be used?

When you are using a gopher you can travel on footpaths, shared paths, in shopping centres, in public places, and across roads.
However, it is illegal to operate a gopher faster that 10km/hr on foot paths, shared paths, and on roads. Travelling faster than 10km/hr is dangerous for you and other pedestrians as there is a risk of more serious injury the faster you travel.

When using a Gopher you are considered a pedestrian, therefore:
• Keep left unless passing another pedestrian
• Beware of vehicles coming out of driveways
• Show consideration for other pedestrians, especially seniors and people with disabilities
• Travel no faster than the surrounding pedestrians as they may not be able to move out of your way quickly
• When parking your Gopher on footpaths please be considerate to other pedestrians and leave enough room to pass
If the footpath is not suitable or there is no footpath available and you need to travel on the road:
• Always face oncoming traffic, as you’re not as visible as a car
• Be aware of traffic movement, signals, and signs
• Watch out for obstructions such as drains, potholes, and people opening car doors when you pass parked cars
• Fit a flag to your gopher to make you more visible
• Take additional care as not all motorists obey the road rules

The Snooker Players Association The Snooker Players Association is situated on the second (Social) floor of the Administration Building. Playing sessions are held Monday to Friday from 1–3pm. New members are welcome and we would especially welcome ‘recently-moved-in’ residents. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for many years, as the ‘old touch’ will soon come back! Our meeting for May was held on the 28th, at the time of this entry into Tidings, that meeting has not been held, so will report on our speaker next month. Our meeting for June will be held on Tuesday 25th when we will
have Dr. Joan Pope ~ ”Music, Movement and Memories” speaking to us, a highly recommended speaker, hope to see you there!! It is possible you may have an interest in WRITING, (from maybe as little as 100 words perhaps describing events or episodes in your life), or in READING, (possibly to discuss your favourite book/author/genre), or even in STORYTELLING? There’s got to be a million interesting ‘life-stories’ you could relate. (Recently one of our group told us about what it was like to live opposite a convicted murderer, another told us about his personal involvement with the building of the Serpentine Dam). Congratulations to the fillies who easily won
the challenge match by five lengths and a
nose, well done girls.
We were successful in the return match
with the Undercroft Bowling Club 67 to 47.
Well done to our teams, unfortunately the
Undercroft were unable to field their best
teams due to holidays / sickness etc. Our
thanks for the game and of course the lunch
afterwards which everyone enjoyed.
On a lighter note I was asked why I was
carrying a potato masher around, its of
course our lucky mascot.
The bus outing to Gingin went very well, the
weather was kind to us and enjoyed by all.
