A religion that, in the manner of the prophets and of Jesus, cries out for compliance to Gods imperatives regarding peace with justice, or reparations for those whom society has scorned and harmed, or refusing to retaliate against those who have harmed us, or giving honor to the creation rather than extracting profit from it — that sort of religion gets plenty of argument. Even from church-goers, despite that all those instructions, and more, come right out of the gospels. From the Pastor and Teacher

Dear Friends,

I’m inspired once more by a writing of Robert L. Meier, from his

Journey On a Small Planet:

Joe Schmaltz had just poured his new front walk when 3-year old

Lucille from next door ran through the wet cement. Big Joe yelled at the

little one in no uncertain terms. “Hey, Joe,” said another neighbor who had

taken in the whole scene, “I thought you liked kids.” Joe replied, “I do in

general, but not in the concrete.”

There are those who have the same attitude toward religion: they’re all

for peace and love in general, but bristle at specific applications. God is

okay! An abstract kind of love for humanity at large is acceptable! Sermons

that soothe and hymns that bring tears of nostalgia make for a pleasant

Sunday morning!

However, a faith that calls a person to obedience starts generating

resistance. A religion that, in the manner of the prophets and of Jesus, cries

out for compliance to God’s imperatives regarding peace with justice, or

reparations for those whom society has scorned and harmed, or refusing to

retaliate against those who have harmed us, or giving honor to the creation

rather than extracting profit from it — that sort of religion gets plenty of

argument. Even from church-goers, despite that all those instructions, and

more, come right out of the gospels.

Which means that the more you and I seek to follow the Way of Jesus, the more likely we’ll push somebody’s buttons. Or tread through their freshly-poured sidewalk.

Worship in July/August

Summer Sunday Worship at 9:30 am

Continued from Page 1

Go ahead and love, anyway: concretely,

faithfully, boldly. Love your neighbor simply, or

daringly, or sacrificially. Answer selfishness with

generosity. Reply to indignation with gentleness.

Debate bombast with affection. Respond to invective

with an invitation to lemonade on the porch.

It doesn’t ever get easy, not exactly. But you will

have the Risen Christ as your companion, which

transforms every bit of trouble into beauty.

God’s richest blessings to you,

Pastor John A. Nelson

Get Ready for Worship!

Follow the “Preparing for Sunday” link on our website (NianticCommunityChurch.org). You will find the scripture readings for the current week, a brief description to set them in context, a reflection on the passages, and a prayer starter. It’s a great way to spend time with God’s Word — and since those passages are (often) the basis for services on Sunday morning, you’ll be adding a new layer of richness and meaning to the experience of worship.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Here is an excerpt from the May 30th, 2016 edition of the Still Speaking Daily Devotional that Paul Helvig forwarded to me a month or two ago. I enjoyed reading it and it reminded me of the childish spirit in each of us...the one who is not worried what other people think, the one who laughs out loud and isn't afraid to be silly. I am one of the most serious people I know so this is good advice for me as well. We as adults probably don't get in touch with that side of ourselves often enough. As our church prepares for our own Vacation Bible School in a couple weeks I will try to keep my childish spirit close at hand. There are a lot of details - lists to make, organizing, painting to do and other various tasks that need to be done before hand. But, once Monday rolls around, its time to have fun and be silly. It's good for kids to see adults in that way also. Vacation Bible School not only teaches us about the stores of the bible or how to live in Gods ways, but lets us be childlike. Maybe that is why I've stayed involved for so many years. It's always a joy to see the children learning, singing songs and praising God with true enjoyment. Stop by the church during the week of July 11th and you'll see what I mean. - Pam McCauley

Childish Ways

Lillian Daniel "When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways." - 1 Corinthians 13:11 If only that were true! I know a lot of adults who have not put aside childish ways. How else do you explain all those boats, fast cars and silly games on Facebook? At our church, we're gearing up for that wonderful summertime tradition of Vacation Bible School. I know the kids love it, but I think the adults volunteers love it the most. It's a chance for grown ups to build dramatic scenery out of old cardboard boxes, and get all messy while painting them. The theatrical types get to dress up in Bible costumes and act out stories in front of children who suddenly get it: the Bible is about real people, just like us! Except that back then, the people wore old bathrobes, fake beards, dish clothes on their head and plastic swords around their waists. I heard a rumor that this summer, the adult volunteers at our church are all going to get a bright orange construction hat with lights on them. Don't ask me where they found this style of dress in the Bible, or what possible pedagogical purpose this attire will serve. I think these adults just want to wear funny hats with lights on them. And who can blame them? There are childish habits worth putting away, like selfishness and shortsightedness. But your childlike spirit of joy and play is worth keeping. So here's to all the Vacation Bible School volunteers. Stay childish and keep mentoring. You guys bring us the best of both worlds. Prayer Bless the big kids and little adults who keep us all on our toes. Amen.

Vacation Bible School

July 11-15

Kids—make plans for another fun Vacation Bible School, 9:00 a.m. to noon, Monday, July 11 through Friday, July 15 here at NCC! We’ll have tons of out of this world fun while learning about God! VBS is for children entering Pre-K through 4th grade, and 5th graders and up are welcome to come as volun-teers. We are seeking plenty of adults to help, as it takes lots of people to make VBS successful each year. For questions or to volunteer, connect with Pam McCauley or Amy Agles. Myth: Cars should run in an idling mode for several minutes before being driven.

Wrong. Modern engines do not need more than a few seconds of idling time before they can be driven safely. Moreover, the best way to warm up a car is to drive it, since that warms up the catalytic converter and other mechanical parts of the car, in addition to the engine.

HISTORY QUIZ

We all know that July 4th, 1876 was our

National Centennial. On the following

Sunday, July 9th, the General Conference

of the Congregational Churches of

Connecticut recommended a celebration

and asked each church to observe the day

by all doing the same thing.

What do you think was planned?

Stewardship comes in many forms because it is about the careful and responsible management of something God has entrusted to us. Jen Mayo the steward of Arbutus Farm in New Hampshire, has yearly accepted the youth of our church to help with the care of this gift. Through her acceptance she has given the youth and adult chaperones time to notice God through their physical efforts of repairing, clearing, cleaning and building. Our youth see God in the stewardship of nature and work. They walk in the light and notice that light in others through their own efforts. Having this opportunity as a church to support and encourage the Wanakee trip has entrusted youth to serve. It gives the gift of faith and how to help prepare others to understand and accept that faith. This mission is stewardship and serves our church. The evidence of the faith filled growth was a Sunday service youth led and God centered with all our children's talents. ~ Stewardship Committee

Patty’s Corner Thoughts from your Community Minister

I sat at the conference table in our Fellowship Room as a program was wrapping up, when a church member said to me, “we ought to have a painting class.” She’d read my mind. I had been thinking about offering a program that would celebrate the connection between creativity and spirituality. I wasn’t sure how it would go over, but like any field of dreams moment, I built it and they came. That was in September 2009. I put together a four week series inspired by Aviva Gold’s, Painting from the Source. It was the simplest of processes. I covered the walls of our multipurpose room with huge sheets of painters plastic, put out a bunch of brushes, hung 18x24” drawing paper and a rainbow selection of kindergarten tempera paint. It was a program to “awaken the artist’s soul in everyone, rekindling a sense of freedom by tapping into the creative spirit at it’s source.” The program was for absolutely anyone who ever had a desire to pick up a paintbrush and no previous talent or ability was required. The experience was a multi dimensional one which Gold described as “genuinely transformative.” I incorporated prayer, music, meditation, painting, and small group sharing into the experience that drew people from within as well as outside the church. We painted in total silence creating a contemplative environment. The 2 1/2 hour mini-retreat ran four weeks and when it was over some folks wanted more so I created a version of what we were doing that met once a month. It evolved over time and was tweaked in ways that made sense for the group, and over the years was inspired by other artists and great thinkers. The name changed to Sacred Source Painting and it was. Each month when we came together, artists stood before a blank sheet of paper and created. Sometimes the paintings looked like something, other times, not so much. But it didn’t matter as it was the process that was important. A process of connecting with their deepest, most authentic selves, led by a God they could not always name, that generated honest to goodness healing and transformation. A core group continued to meet while other folks came and went. And just shy of seven years later with two women still participating from that first class, I discerned that it was time to wrap this up. The core group was no longer in alignment about the way the process should continue. They just couldn’t agree about the future of Sacred Source Painting and some just couldn’t accept change. So what do you do when a ministry that has touched people in such a deep and profound way, is ready to end? What do you do when harmony has gone on hiatus and a nurturing faith program doesn’t feel very nurturing? You wrap it up. And that’s exactly what I did. There is wisdom in knowing when to let go of a program. In church settings so often we continue doing things a certain way because, “that’s how it’s always been done.” I know I will create new programs that celebrate that undeniable connection between creativity and spirituality. I believe in the healing power of the arts and their ability to help us grow in our relationship with God. We need only be open to the infinite possibilities. But for now, it’s time to say goodbye, and in doing that, open doors for new experiences to begin.

Abundant blessings to you, Patty
