A Federated Church of the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church An Open, Affirming, Reconciling Congregation

From the Pastor and Teacher

Dear Friends,

You’ve probably heard of “infographics”: com-bining simple images with concise information, to make a point. Here’s one that made an impression on me: “How Soda Impacts Your Body.”

I wasn’t surprised by any one of the bits of infor-mation here. But reading them all together made quite an impact. Full disclosure: this won’t change my behavior, since the last time I drank a soda was probably 5 years ago, and that was a fluke. But if you tend to consume sodas, you might want to read the information here. It could help you make a deci-sion for better health.

(Although the information here is brief and blunt, it comes from studies by UCLA, the University of Copenhagen, the Academy of General Dentistry, the University of Miami, and more. To read the full arti-

cle, visit the website http://tiny.cc/nkch2w)

I do think that if St. Paul had planted Christian churches in communities awash in junk food, the way ours are, our Bible would have some harsh con-demnations of this scourge. Because our bodies are miraculous creations, and they deserve the best and healthiest treatment we can give them. That’s one good way of honoring the amazing gifts of our Crea-tor.

Yours in the quest for faithful living, eating, and drinking,

Pastor John A. Nelson

WEIGHT

Drinking one soda a day equates to consuming 39 pounds of sugar per year. Regularly consuming sugary

drinks interacts with the genes that affect weight. Sugar-sweetened beverages are linked to more than 180,000

obesity-related deaths a year.

KIDNEYS The high levels of phosphoric acid in colas have been linked to kdney stones and other renal problems. Diet cola most likely to have a negative effect — especially

when more than two servings a day are consumed.

BONES Soda consumption has been linked to osteoporosis and bone density loss, likely due to the phosphoric

acid and caffeine in soda.

LUNGS The more soda you drink, the more likely you are to develop asthma or COPD.

BRAIN Having too much sugar in your diet reduces production of a brain chemical that helps us learn, store memories, and process insulin. Consuming too much sugar also dulls the

brain’s mechanism for telling you to stop eating.

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

The carbonation in soft driniks can cause gas, bloating, cramping, and exacerbate the effects of

irritable bowel syndrome. Caffeine can also worsen episodes of diarrhea or contribute to constipation.

HEART Chronic diet- and regular soda consumption leads to an increased risk of heart disease,

including heart attack and stroke.

TEETH The high levels of acid in soda corrode your teeth — almost as badly as drinking

battery acid.

History Quiz & Trivia

You may have noticed that the church office has been getting a make-over. That office, along with the pastor’s office, was part of an addition to the church in 1986. The question is where was the FIRST secretary’s office located in this building?

Greetings friends, It is my hope that you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer as I have. Summer is the time that most of us relax, swim, and enjoy all that God has created around us. September is usually the time of year when our lives get busy. I would like to suggest a way to help alleviate stress, Music Therapy. Listening to your favorite music, singing, or playing a musical instrument can help one alleviate stress and ward off illness. Music is known to be a great healer. In the Bible we can read how David played the harp to help ease a severe depression of King Saul. The entire human energetic system is extremely influenced by sounds. Experts suggest that it is the rhythm of the music has a calming effect on us although we may not be conscious of it. I enjoy listening to and playing the “singing bowls”, the sounds and vibrations are so relaxing. Did you know that the physical body and your chakra centers respond specifically to certain tones and frequencies? Music works on many levels at the same time. It can be a significant mood-changer, it encourages oxygenation of your blood and muscles, reduces your heart beat and music also can enhance your memory. So, as we creep into September try listening to or playing or singing a favorite song daily. Join the choir. Close your eyes…listen to the music; feel its magic at work. Be open to its healing powers. Music is a marvelous way to rid ourselves of the stress and take care of our bodies. Peace and Joy,

Donna

An Invitation to Join the Adult Sunday Morning Class In a recent “Word From Russ,” he talked about the importance of feeding a fire in order to keep it alive and related that to the importance of nurturing relationships—both with other people and with God. NCC offers many opportunities to grow in our knowledge of and our love for God. But it takes effort and commitment. Worship can certainly be inspiring, and the sermons can help us “see with new eyes” and “hear with new ears,” but we also have a chance on Sunday mornings to engage in conversation with other Christians, to explore where we are on our faith journey, to probe those nagging questions, and find insight and encouragement from fellow travelers. Each adult class is designed to stand alone so even if you can’t come every week, you won’t find yourself lost the next time you attend. And it doesn’t matter how much or how little you know about the Bible. The adult Sunday morning class is a wonderful complement to worship and great preparation for the week ahead. But most importantly, it helps us live into that first and greatest commandment to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27) The journey into that kind of love—that kind of relationship—lasts a lifetime, and you don’t have to travel alone. There’s much to be gained by joining with other seekers and believers. When the bell rings in the dining hall after the 9:00 service, answer the Spirit’s call to nurture your faith. ~ Paul Helvig

Inspiring Generosity…

We are surrounded by those who inspire us to give, love, work and live generously. This month’s spotlight is on Niantic Community Church’s Congregation.

66 Years of Inspiring Generosity!

This summer our church held its 66th year of the traditional roast beef/turkey summer supper. Niantic Community church is known in our community by many because of these suppers. This year we served 296 people. It could not have been a more beautiful evening and everyone was enjoying the good food along with the wonderful fellowship. That includes both those served and those serving! This supper and those 65 suppers before it only happen because of the generosity of many. It takes a lot of effort to do everything necessary to put on one of these suppers and make it successful. We counted them up and it totaled 102 people. Can you imagine that! We won’t mention names, but how about categories. Starting with those who plan and prepare for the evening. Those people who advertise and prepare flyers/signs along with taking the many phone calls inquiring about the supper. Then there are those who order the supplies and food. Those who setup the dining hall, outdoor seating and the kitchen. Those who cook the food and carve the roast beef and turkey. There are the waiters for 19 tables, the kitchen servers, the cooks and the gravy makers. The ones who run the scullery and those who dry the dishes and silverware. The ones who run the pie room and those who make the pies. Those selling tickets and counting the money. And finally, the ones who do everything else that nobody is thinking about that make the supper move smoothly and send people home satisfied and wanting more. Many of our patrons were members of NCC supporting the supper by dining with us. Have we left anyone out? Probably! What we mean to say is that so many people generously give of their time and talents. This church is full of folks who do not hesitate to step up when needed. A lot of times it is not easy and it means not doing something else. But people do it when asked or when they see a need and they do it willingly. 102 people stepped up to make this supper a success. We are blessed by your willingness and your inspiring generosity. On behalf of all of us, we thank you! Thank you for those who have given year after year. Thank you to those who gave for the first time. Thank you from the youngest to the oldest. You came together as one body and in one spirit. Finally, we are thankful for the memory of Bob Frink and Lill Hall whose limitless generosity continue to inspire us. (For those who did not know these two wonderful people, they were instrumental in life of our church for so many years and were especially involved in the summer suppers.) Rich Thomson and Ron Johnson Co-Chairs of this year’s Traditional Summer Supper

Bully – The Movie

Friday, September 20, 2013 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Editorial review: From Sundance Award-winning filmmaker, Lee Hirsch, comes a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary following five kids and families over the course of a school year. Offering insight into different facets of America’s bullying crisis, the stories include two families who have lost children to suicide and a mother awaiting the fate of her 14-year-old daughter, who has been incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus. With an intimate and often shocking glimpse into homes, classrooms, cafeterias and principals' offices, this is a powerful and inspiring film that every educator, parent and teenager should see.

Did you know that we have a small emergency food pantry here at NCC? Many folks don’t even know it’s there but it serves more than 25 families each year. People often learn about it through Infoline and when they call the church office, church secretary Judy Snitkin prepares a bag of non perishable food items for them. The pantry is stocked by donations from church members and is overseen by Food Pantry Minister, Pat Lord. The shelves are looking a bit sparse lately and Pat has offered a few suggestions about what foods are needed most.

“I try to stay away from large, family size cans of things for a few reasons: sometimes it is a single person requesting the items, they are very heavy, and take up too much space in the one bag allotted,” says Pat. “We can use cereal, cans of fruit, pasta, sauce, jelly, canned meals i.e. beef stew, corned beef hash, chili, etc., canned veggies, small cans of juice, teabags, saltines and small instant coffee.”

A basket to collect food pantry donations is always located in the narthex so if you think about it, drop off an item or two on your way into worship. The folks who call for help will sure appreciate it. This is just one more small way to be involved in your church community… a small step that makes a big impact in the life of someone who is hungry.
