2 ANNUAL REPORT 2010-11

Dear friends & colleagues,

The spirit of entrepreneurship, and the “can do” attitude that entrepreneurs are genetically endowed with, have repeatedly seen our

planet through tough times, such as the recession and global financial meltdown we just survived. When the world is in trouble, it

is the Entrepreneur who comes to the rescue. This has been the indisputable case throughout modern history, right from the

Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, where inventors such as Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, the Wright Brothers,

John D Rockefeller, Henry Ford, Cyrus McCormick, and the Wright Brothers, ignited economic growth. In the 20th century, another

renaissance led by entrepreneurs like Sam Walton, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Herb Kelleher, Andy Grove and Ted Turner transformed our

economy and quality of life. Today, entrepreneurs like Sergey Brin, Tony Hsieh and Mark Zuckerberg, are implementing game

changing ideas and transforming the way we live and work. And entrepreneurship is precisely what TiE is all about.

TiE is all about fostering, encouraging and promoting entrepreneurship all across the globe. TiE was founded in 1992 by a group of

successful Indo-American entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley. They had conquered stereotypes, broken glass ceilings, and forged

successful companies, thereby blazing a trail for the rest of their diaspora. These visionary individuals came together to encourage,

help and give back to aspiring entrepreneurs, irrespective of their country of origin. To them we owe a great debt of gratitude. From

those humble beginnings of a few “Indian Givers”, TiE has grown into the world’s largest organization of entrepreneurs with over

13,000 members spread across 56 Chapters in 13 countries and 5 continents, across the world.

The range of successful TiE programs literally spans the globe including the pan-India TiE Entrepreneurial Summits, TiECons in

several TiE Chapters, the TiE Young Entrepreneurs Program that teaches young minds the essentials of business and entrepreneurship,

and the popular TiEQuest business plan competition where startups are recognized and offered tangible assistance, in kind and in

value. Additionally, The Kauffman Foundation, Microsoft and Symsoft Solutions - our global sponsors – are a constant source of

support and ideas for developing TiE.

On a more somber note, our founder, leading light and stalwart extraordinaire, Prof. C.K. Prahalad passed away most unexpectedly

last year. Acknowledged as the foremost business thought leader in the world, his passing was a devastating loss to TiE as well as

to the business community at large. We will miss him immensely for the vision and guidance he provided us. His contributions to

TiE are truly timeless, and we will attempt to stand by his words, deeds, and ideals. He continues to guide us in spirit.

I look forward to working with our new CEO P.K. Agarwal and our newly elected Board of Trustees in continuing to establish TiE as

the world’s premier organization for the promotion of entrepreneurship.

Sincerely

Ashok Rao

ANNUAL REPORT 2010-11 3

Dear Friends,

Our global family continues to grow. We added three new chapters in the last 12 months. In 2010, as the global economy made its

way out of the great recession, TiE’s growth profile mirrored that of the economy at large. The Chapters in advanced economies

showed flat or moderate growth while the Chapters in emerging economies showed greater momentum. With growth comes

complexity of governance. I am pleased to report that our Trustees have shown exceptional energy and foresight in dealing

decisively with many of the governance issues that we had accumulated over the past few years. With these issues behind us, we

refocus our energy on the core business of fostering entrepreneurship globally.

Our brand is strong and getting stronger. We have a number of new Chapters in the pipeline. However, the business of entrepreneurship

is changing. What used to be the sole purview of the non-profit sector is seeing significant involvement of the private sector and

governments. Startup America, and more recently Startup Britain are examples of governments recognizing the critical need for

entrepreneurship as an engine for job creation.

It is also interesting to note that TiE Chapters are expanding into areas outside its historic core of IT. A number of TiE Chapters are

now focusing on entrepreneurship in Cleantech and Biotech, with newer Chapters like Coimbatore bringing strong manufacturing

prowess in the mix. Our global family is becoming very diverse.

Our Global Programs are doing very well. The Youth Entrepreneur Program has expanded to nine Chapters. The business venture

competition originating from Toronto is now in three Chapters. We are also in the process of revamping the TiE Global System. The

new architecture will pave the way for greater collaboration and more effective way of managing and sharing content across the

TiE universe. We will make inroads in one of the most critical needs of our members – and be able to offer greater global identity

and connections.

On a somber note, the loss of our visionary C.K. Prahalad in 2010 has been a difficult one. But he lives in our hearts as we strive to

achieve his vision and aspirations.

We are fortunate to have Kauffman Foundation, Microsoft, and Symsoft Solutions as our global sponsors. They not only provide

much needed resources, but also the thought leadership to stay focused on the ever changing business of entrepreneurship.

As I complete my first year in this role, I feel privileged to be working with such a unique and dynamic group of individuals. I look

forward to serving you and the success of TiE.

Since its inception in 1992 in Silicon Valley, USA, TiE has emerged as the world’s largest not-for-profit organization promoting

entrepreneurship. Currently, the TiE Network is in 56 locations across 13 countries. TiE’s mission to foster entrepreneurship globally

through mentoring, networking, and education has found strong acceptance across the globe as essential pre-requisite for economic

development. Dedicated to the virtuous cycle of wealth creation and giving back to the community, TiE’s focus is on generating and

nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Its network of 10,500 members and 2,500 charter members constitute some of the top notch entrepreneurs and professionals along

with high profile VCs, private equity, angels, law firms and thought leaders, who shape the global entrepreneurial ecosystem.

TiE Members are generally entrepreneurs or aspiring entrepreneurs and business professionals with an interest in networking

with mentors and industry veterans, gaining knowledge about their industry and learning from the stories of successful entrepreneurs

and businessmen.

TiE Charter Members are members by invitation only. They are successful entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, corporate executives

and senior professionals who have reached a stage in their lives where they are ready, willing and able to give back to the

community and assist their fellow members.

TiE Inc. also known as TiE Global was created in 2002 to provide a unified voice for the entire TiE Network. TiE Global and the Board of Directors

governing the body, provide an umbrella framework within which all Chapters operate and flourish.

A TRIBUTE TO CK PRAHALAD

Coimbatore Krishnarao Prahalad, also known as

CK Prahalad is famous as the father of the concepts of

core competency and the fortune at the bottom of the

pyramid. Born in Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil

Nadu in 1941, Mr. Prahalad was one of nine children of a

Sanskrit scholar and judge. He joined Union Carbide in

1960 soon after completing his bachelor’s in Physics from

Loyola College in Madras. He then did his post graduation

at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad,

completing his studies there in 1966, and went on to do a

PhD on multinational management at the Harvard

Business School in 1972.

Mr. Prahalad’s theory is believed to have affected many

Indian and developing world retail outlets, for instance

driving consumer-goods companies like Godrej and

Hindustan Lever to come up with small-sized sachets of

products like shampoo that could be sold as individual

portions.

Prahalad was the distinguished University Professor of

Strategy, the University of Michigan’s Ross School of

Business. He ranked amongst the top ten management

thinkers in every major survey for over ten years. Business

Week said of him: “a brilliant teacher at the University of

Michigan, he may well be the most influential thinker on

business strategy today.” He was a member of the Blue

Ribbon Commission of the United Nations on Private Sector

and Development. In 2009, the government of India

conferred upon him the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s

highest civilian awards.

“I join all of you in remembering Dr. C. K. Prahalad and celebrating a life lived to the full, meaningfully, wisely and in the service of the

people at large. Some people leave behind wealth, others leave behind some remnants of power, and some leave behind the passionate

energy of their ideas that continually stimulate those whose lives they touch. C.K. Prahalad belonged to this third category.” …He taught

business to include those presently not in the market, and create new markets out of them.

Many companies have profited by putting these ideas into actual practice. His contributions in management like ‘competitive advantage’,

strategy as stretch’, fortune at the bottom of the pyramid’ and ‘co-creation’ will all continue to excite his students and colleagues to

walk those roads.

In his passing away, our country has lost a very noble worthy son continuously engaged in extending its freedoms. The world has lost

a great thought leader and the field of management, one of its visionary intellectuals. If his associates miss him so much I can only

imagine the extent of the loss felt by his wife, by his children and by his friends.

I join all of you in extending our condolences to his family. Once again, let us celebrate this tremendous innovative individual who made

India proud.” - Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the memorial service for late CK Prahalad.

“I have always thought that Prahalad was one of the most fascinating business thinkers of the 20th century, rivaling Peter Drucker in his

wisdom. Much of what Prahalad wrote about executives was applicable to all of us. For example, this quote by CK Prahalad, ‘We are

constrained not by our resources, but by our imagination’ is just as true when applied to all of us.” - Dan Erwin, executive coach.

GLOBAL INITIATIVES

TiE Global introduced many new initiatives over the year, to share innovative programming and knowledge across the TiE ecosystem.

TiE Global partnered with leading Chapters, to support proliferation of impactful programs such as innovation competition (TiEQuest)

as well as entrepreneurial course and business plan competition for young students (TiE Young Entrepreneurs). We are grateful to

our Global sponsors - Kauffman Foundation, Microsoft Corporation and Symsoft Solutions who have assisted us in several ways to further

TiE’s impact.

Launch of New ChaptersTiE Global successfully inducted TiE Coimbatore, TiE Bhubaneshwar and

TiE Brussels as part of the ecosystem. A rigorous process during Chapter

formation ensures strong membership base and support in the

community, required to sustain the Chapter locally.

New TiE WebsiteIn today’s digital world, an organization’s website is its front face to the

world. With inputs from PK Agarwal, TiE CEO and former CTO of the State

of California, and Chapter management, we were ready to revamp TiE’s

integrated IT platform that connects our ecosystem. For this project,

our requirement was to identify a complete end-to-end solutions

provider, who would be able to develop a customized platform. SymSoft

Solutions was selected as our IT partner. Symsoft has deep experience

in Content Management Solutions (CMS), and custom application

development, giving an impetus to our business needs. In exchange

for their services, Symsoft Solutions has been inducted as a new TiE

Global Sponsor.

The new website has been very well received and appreciated by all Chapters. The refreshed look reflects a dynamic brand and an

Entrepreneur’s go-to site. The plan is to migrate all the Chapter sites by middle of the year. Some of the highlights of the website are

as follows:

• “Entrepreneur’s Corner” for the benefit of aspiring

entrepreneurs and established professionals

• “Our Network” showcases TiE’s worldwide presence, and

highlights our esteemed Speakers, Mentors and Brand

Ambassadors

• “Media Library” displays a huge archive of good videos

and photographs

• Powerful Search functionality acts as an “Online member

directory” and can search text, images and multi-media

• Intrinsic Search engine optimization features

• Streamlined look reinforces branding

• Flexibility for all chapters to manage their own content

• Highlight Assets and significant content

GLOBAL INITIATIVES

Social NetworkingThe new homepage highlights social networking tools, and several TiE Chapters

have been able to successfully use new media tools for networking and collaborating

amongst TiE members. TiE Global manages a LinkedIn Group for “TiE Presidents”

(over 100 current and past Presidents) and “TiE Executive Directors” (over 50 EDs), a

platform to achieve greater collaboration, share best practices, discuss new ideas,

and also promote TiE Chapter events.

Speaker’s ForumTiE Global has facilitated the much-awaited - “Speakers Forum”, a platform where

Chapters can share and seek “Speakers”. The new “Speakers Forum” features

prominent personalities who have the power to inspire and educate. It is a platform

whereby all TiE Chapters in the Network can collaboratively share their

relationships, and deliver power and meaning to the project.

TiEQuestTiEQuest, is a business plan competition for startups initiated by TiE Toronto. It has

been broadened into a Global program under the leadership of Suresh Madan, TiE

Toronto President. A business competition is an excellent way for new ventures to

get noticed by top VCs in the community, as well as for receiving guidance from

mentors. With incredible support from sponsors, VCs, esteemed judges and mentors;

all TiEQuest participants come out winners. TiE Chapters in Ohio and Detroit have also

implemented this impressive program.

TiE Spotlight‘TiE Spotlight’ is our newest Global program - a series of live webcast

sessions featuring thought leaders, TiE stalwarts and prominent guest

speakers. The online showcase provides an opportunity to share

knowledge and learnings to the worldwide TiE audience and build

a sense of community within the TiE Network.

TiE Young EntrepreneursTiE Global instituted a global program designed for young students

last year. The TiE Young Entrepreneurs (TYE) Initiative helps high

school children gain confidence to lead a team, develop business

acumen, improve communication skills and discover the

challenges and rewards of becoming an entrepreneur. The program

is operational at nine Chapters in the TiE Network - Carolinas, Seattle,

Austin, Boston, Atlanta, UK, Rajasthan, Delhi and San Diego.

Daniel Castro, (attorney, Castro & Baker, LLP) who taught the business

law session of the TYE Program in Austin says, “TYE is the first

program I have heard of that teaches student to create a business plan

and address needs of society, rather than simply teaching them to

write a resume, and guiding them to work for someone else. The

students who graduate from this program will be light years ahead

of their peers upon graduation from high school and college.

I tip my hat the founders of this organization. I am thrilled to be a

part of it”.

Speaker’s Forum - Gurcharan Das is a prominent

speaker who has graced several TiE events

SUCCESS STORIES

L to R: Natasha Rufus Isaacs and Lavinia Brennan, founders of Beulah London,

Vikas Shah, Director of Swiscot and TiE Charter Member, mentors

Natasha Rufus Isaacs and Lavinia Brennan, founders of Beulah London,

a luxury fashion brand with a social enterprise theme.

Beulah London is a luxury fashion brand with a twist. Natasha

and Lavinia successfully combined their love for fashion, with

their passion for social justice. Inspired by the injustices they

saw during their travels, they have created a new-breed of

socially conscious businesses.

Natasha Rufus Isaacs and Lavinia Brennan launched their ethical

fashion label after working in the slums of Delhi with women

and girls rescued from the city’s underground sex trade. The

enterprising pair will be donating a portion of their profits to

Indian and UK organisations and charities dedicated to eradicate

this modern-day slavery.

Mentors at the TiE UK Chapter connected them to Vikas Shah, a

TiE UK Charter Member and Director of Swiscot, a diverse trading

company with activities in luxury and retail linens, contract

textiles, fabrics and yarns, commodities, finance and consulting.

Natasha Isaacs quotes: “We have found the TiE Mentoring program

extremely useful. After our initial meeting with Mohammed Raja at

the British Library, we were put in touch with Vikas Shah, a mentor who

understands the field we are working in. His advice and encouragement

has been invaluable, and we are really supportive of TiE and would

encourage any young entrepreneur to get involved.”

The company has been running for 7 months now and, with the

help of Vikas, they hope to be able to overcome obstacles, and

grow the business successfully. Vikas quotes, “My career to date

has engaged me in a lot of different sectors, ranging from advertising

and branding, to luxury retail, investment, and even charities around

the world. For Beulah, the advice I provided drew on all these areas of

experience, being a business focussed on luxury and branding, with a

philanthropic angle, and is also gearing up to become investment ready.”

Wear your heart on your sleeve:Beulah London, UK

Prior to their first meeting Vikas researched the market, their

product, and value proposition. In the beginning of the mentoring

session, he focused on getting a good understanding of the

objectives of its owners. Subsequently, they went ahead with

developing a really solid plan for integrating their brand/

marketing side of the collection, with the social impact side of

the business.

Natasha said about the advice given to her by Vikas,“He helped us

think outside the box, in terms of developing a strong link with our

corporate social responsibility to enhance our brand. Vikas gave us

advice on stock inventory, customer interface, shared market experience,

and gave us constructive feedback which was exactly what we needed.”

Recently, Beulah London has unveiled its first collection

“Amazing Grace” for Spring/Summer 2011. There is a buzz about

their new socially conscious startups and the founders are

thrilled about that. The dresses have some high-profile admirers,

including “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker who saw

them at Paris Fashion Week. Beulah is currently being stocked

in a couple of stores in London and Singapore.

Vikas Shah said about his experience as a TiE UK mentor for

Beulah London: “Through TiE, I have had the privilege of being able to

mentor some of the UK’s most talented young entrepreneurs. As a

mentor, it is a wonderful opportunity to be able to share skills and

experience with upcoming businesses, learn about changing markets,

and different business processes. I think, as a mentor, you take as much

out of the experience as your mentee!”

SUCCESS STORIES

An Eye for Success:Cognovision, Toronto

Startup : Cognovision

Sector : Retail & Electronics Industry

Founder : Faizal Javer, Haroon Mirza and

Shahzad Malik

TiE Mentors : Pulin Chandaria,

Suresh Madan

L to R: Faizal Javer, Haroon Mirza and Shahzad Malik, co-founders of digital

signage company Cognovision, which was recently acquired by Intel

In September 2010, Intel bought the digital signage company –

Cognovision, an Ontario- based startup in an effort to enter this

quickly expanding market segment. Paul Otellini, CEO of Intel

said about the acquisition at the Intel Capital CEO Summit, “It’s

an area where for not a lot of money you can really pick up some of the

leading companies that turbo charge you into this segment.”

The founders of Cognovision were contestants of TiEQuest

Business Venture Competition, organized by TiE Toronto in 2007.

Cognovision provides anonymous face detection and people

tracking software for the retail and out-of-home advertising

industries. Their revolutionary technology measures the

effectiveness of media displays and gathers data on customer

behavior using small camera sensors and computers in signs

and other places. The technology allows signs to monitor how

long a person looks at an ad, allowing more targeted ads, and

has the ability to change if people show that they are losing

interest.

Over the years, the company benefitted from ongoing mentoring

through the TiEQuest business venture initiative to reach a stage

when it became attractive to the semiconductor maker. “We are

very proud to see that one of our TiEQuest finalists has evolved to be so

successful. Their success will surely be inspirational to other contestants

in the competition” says Suresh Madan, President of TiE Toronto

and the chief organizer of the TiEQuest Business Venture

Competition.

TiEQuest venture competition is open to all current and aspiring

entrepreneurs in North America, and requires that contestants

have an original business idea. The competition receives diverse

business ideas proposed by contestants who are PhDs, MBAs,

medical doctors, engineers and chartered accountants.

Faizal Javer says, “As a former participant of TiEQuest, we strongly

recommend TiEQuest to all entrepreneurs with a burning idea, or even

if they are with an established business; as it can help refine that idea

and help focus on an area which will most maximize your average.”

Today, all three co-founders give their unqualified support to

the TiE Toronto mentoring sessions as part of the annual

TiEQuest business venture competition.

At their introductory meeting, Pulin offered great feedback on

their presentation, stressing the importance of having an

Intellectual Property strategy initiated very soon, and suggested

potential people to add to the team such as a management

team member with marketing or media experience.

Says Haroon, “Pulin did a deep dive on our Business Plan – with feedback

on our Executive Summary, Elevator Pitch, as well as a review of the

financials. He helped us revise the amount of funding we were looking

to raise.”

Haroon also stresses on the benefits of the TiEQuest program

saying, “TiEQuest in itself was an absolutely invaluable experience for

us because the process we had to go through to get through the various

competition gates was incredible. The competition forced us to articulate

our business plan, to go through the through process of financial

projections, and we had the opportunity to get some wonderful feedback

on our business from the TiE ecosystem of seasoned professionals and

entrepreneurs.”

Beyond TiEQuest, Pulin continuously offered guidance and

support. Over the years, he continuously checked in to see their

progress, and was available as a sounding board for strategic

decision-making or brainstorming. His mentorship continued

during the negotiations with Intel; and it continues on post

acquisition.

They also sought assistance from Raju Reddy, a TiE Silicon Valley

Charter Member from the IT sector, who became their mentor in

December 2007. “Raju was absolutely great in offering his guidance

and feedback, and always made himself available to us. Moreover, he

also opened up his network to us. During our negotiations with Intel

Capital, he connected us with a close colleague who previously worked

there, which provided us amazing insight on how the venture fund

operated, and the key management there.”

Haroon sums up his experience and guidance received saying,

“Overall, TiE helped change our lives, and for that we will be forever

grateful.”

L to R: Nitin Gupta, Ankur Tripathi and Saurabh Gupta, co-founders of IRTEX,

a state-of-the-art transportation exchange

Gurmeet Chawla and Shivneet Singh mentor and support young

and upcoming entrepreneurs from Chandigarh, who aspire to

make a tangible difference in the infrastructure and transport

systems in India.

The trucking and transport industry is one of the major lifelines

of an economy – delivering goods and services to locations far

and wide – from bustling metropolises to inner cities and villages.

The road transport sector in India contributes close to 4% of the

gross domestic product (GDP) i.e. to the working of the economy.

However, the trucking business in the country also suffers from

huge inefficiencies.

An entrepreneur though sees a bright light at the end of dark

tunnel. And three alumni of IIT Bombay and Cornell University –

Ankur Tripathi, Nitin Gupta and Saurabh Gupta saw an

opportunity to affect change in one of the most inefficient and

unorganized sectors in India. They were motivated to improve

the functioning of the road transport sector and contribute

positively towards national savings and country’s growth

They realized the need for a real-time marketplace for road

transportation to solve the existing problems. The team

conducted extensive market survey for four months to gauge the

market size and therein explore opportunities, before they were

fully convinced of the idea. This was how Indian Road

Transportation Exchange (IRTEX) was conceptualized.

IRTEX focused on improving in-process efficiency by consolidating

unorganized and fragmented road transportation sector in India.

Through electronic communication channels such as

mobile phones, email, and a web based interactive network

integrated with their regional offices, IRTEX team designed a

state-of-the-art transportation exchange to enable transporters,

booking agents and other logistics service providers to interact

on a wide scale, with resulting efficiency and increased profits.

The IRTEX team presented their business plan at ‘EnterPrize 2009’,

business plan competition organized by TiE Chandigarh. Ankur says,

“We won the event, but more importantly, the recognition and guidance

we received during the course of event helped us tremendously in

SUCCESS STORIES

Jazzing up the trucking business:IRTEX, Chandigarh

getting started.” Ankur further elaborates on the mentoring and guidance

received, “TiE connected the IRTEX team with Mr Gurmeet Chawla, an

experienced mentor, who assisted our team in refining our financial

model, as well as strategic and operational issues. As conceptualized,

IRTEX was a very sophisticated system, and Gurmeet advised us to

hone in on the most critical problems to work better in the existing

market scenario. Insightful discussions with Mr. Chawla brought the

idea closer to the problem which needed immediate attention.”

“TiE Chandigarh provided immense help and support to the team by

connecting them to the relevant audience who could critically analyze

the business plan and the product. The IRTEX team received great

support from Mr. Shivneet Singh (Executive Director, TiE Chandigarh),

who helped them to network with potential investors, mentors and

strategic partners through various networking events”, attests Ankur

Tripathi.

IRTEX has launched the pilot services with selected group of

industries, transporters and booking agents operating out of

Mumbai, and already have a customer base of more than 50

booking agents and transporters. IRTEX has plans to expand its

reach across 65 major logistics hubs of the country by 2014. To

fund this growth, they are planning to raise $400,000 as seed

investment. Ankur is thankful for his TiE connection, saying, “The

entire IRTEX team thanks TiE for providing all the support to the business

idea at the stage when it was required the most.”

L to R: Soul Tree founders - Melvin D’Souza and Alok Mathur find the

perfect blend of both worlds

Cocktails with your Curries:Soul Tree Wine, UK

Startup : Soul Tree Wine

Sector : Restaurant, Food & Beverage Industry

Founder : Melvin D’Souza and Alok Mathur

TiE Mentors : Raj Ruia, Managing Director of

Richard Haworth

Raj Ruia, Managing Director of Richard Haworth and formerTiE Manchester Board and Charter Member, mentored Melvin D’Souzaand Alok Mathur, Founders of Soul Tree Wine, a wine business bringingIndian wines to the Western world.

The Soul Tree story began in 2009, soon after Alok and Melvinfinished doing their MBAs at Oxford University’s Said BusinessSchool.

During a trip to India, Melvin and Alok visited a few vineyards inNasik – their native place which also happens to be a nascentwine producing area of the world. They were floored by thedistinct wines that beautifully complemented Indian food, andknew instantly it would be a hit with curry lovers in UK.

Their research indicated that the wine market in UK was alreadyat overcapacity with 7,000 different wine brands available. However, the good news was that Indian wines were scarce inthe UK market. There were 10,000 odd Indian restaurants in theUK selling wine worth £180m every year – and almost none of itcame from India. With this knowledge, Melvin and Alok decidedto break into burgeoning Indian wine industry and bring Indianwines to the UK.

They also loved the fact that their business bridged the twonations they called home and allowed them to successfully finetune the proposition at each end. It took them over a year to puteverything into place, from setting up sourcing from India tomarket research into the habits of British wine consumers, andbranding and operations in the UK.

Alok and Melvin started marketing efforts for Soul Tree inNovember 2009, with the launch of the Soul Tree website. Inspite of their combined experience in the world of internationalbusiness the wine industry was relatively new to them, and theysought help through the TiE UK mentoring program.

They received structured mentoring sessions for several weekson the Mentoring Program in partnership with the British Librarywith Mohammed Raja as the professional mentor. Says Melvin,”

The sessions with Mohammed were the perfect forum for re-evaluation

and fine-tuning of business plan ideas. Mohammed was a great sounding

board, offering advice on key issues.

Preliminary guidance was followed by “real life” mentoring byTiE UK charter member, Raj Ruia, Managing Director of RichardHaworth. With his practical experience of running RichardHaworth, one of UK’s leading trade suppliers of luxury linens tohotels and restaurants, Raj Ruia was ideally suited to advisethe fledgling startup in a similar marketplace. Raj worked on

the company’s business plan, pricing strategy with Melvin andAlok to make their business more commercially viable. He gaverealistic advice on how they could position Soul Tree Wines inthe market, and how their different wines should be priced.

Raj also introduced Melvin and Alok to a master of wine whohas been providing technical advice and the founders continueto seek her approval for each wine. Recounting his mentoringexperience Melvin says, “Sound advice coupled with useful contacts

within the wine industry in the UK made a significant impact in several

different ways to how Soul Tree has developed as a business. Raj’s input

into the business have gone a long way towards its success to date.”

The wheels of the company were in motion in June 2010, andtheir contention that the curry-loving British would love the ideaof an Indian wine in an Indian restaurant was put to the testand proven. Market response was much better than expectedand 25 restaurants were quickly signed up to sell Soul Tree wines.

Recounting his mentoring experience with Melvin, Alok and SoulTree Wine, Raj Ruia said: “During that initial period Melvin, Alok and

I were extremely busy and lived a fair distance apart, but still managed

to meet and have regular phone calls. Melvin and Alok already had their

business idea and plan in place and had great entrepreneurial spirit but

now needed to bounce ideas off someone and iron out areas of concerns.

I was able to help them here and made them look further into certain

areas of their business that required more attention. Also I put Melvin

and Alok in touch with a few personal contacts within the wine industry

who gave them a lot of time and support which was most beneficial. It

was definitely a two-way relationship and I am glad my advice to both

Melvin and Alok helped them develop what is a great business venture!”

Melvin D’Souza and Alok Mathur said: “The TiE mentoring program

has proved to be an invaluable resource. We found both Raj and

Mohammed to be superb sources of inspiration, real-life experience,

industry contacts, and great practical advice.”

Alok and Melvin have made great progress so far with UK distributorsand now supply wines to about 40 restaurants in the Midlands andEast counties with supplies to London restaurants set to start inmid-November. Soul Tree Wine has also entered the European winemarket through distributors in Germany and France who work onan independent contract basis and they are also working on alarge order in the United States. The founders believe that SoulTree Wine is set to capture the hearts and minds of millions ofcurry and wine lovers in the country and across the world.

ANNUAL REPORT 2010-11 21

Wayne Morris gets energized with his new Cleantech venture

- Big Green Company

Walli Ullah, TiE UK charter member motivates Wayne Morris to take a

leap into the sunshine industry.

After graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University with

first class honors in Economics, Wayne Morris, began working at

Galen Pharmaceutical company, a major pharmaceuticals sales

and marketing company in the UK. Few years later, Wayne felt

the need to leave the large corporation to “go it alone” and

began his entrepreneurial journey. Wayne set up his own

pharmaceutical consultancy, viewing it as a safe and secure

option, considering he had the knowledge and expertise in this

area. His venture went well, till they unexpectedly lost a large

contract with a major pharmaceutical company, and had to

close shop.

Wayne says, “I did not want to go back into corporate business

- that I was sure of. I had a little taste of running my own business

and really liked it. Only issue was that I could not think of a

successful business I could do, on my own.” In the transition

period, he took up a sales job, and broaden his skill set, and set

up an online insurance comparison site. This enabled him to

quickly understand the power of online sales, and how

seamlessly it can be executed. In honing his skills, he prepped

himself for bigger and better things.

Soon, he took up a new office in Manchester, and positioned

himself to be in the centre of action. Wayne did take on a big

risk – with no turnover, no staff, and nothing but a dream to run

a large, successful company. Jean Drinkwater, chapter manager

at TiE Manchester who worked nearby, suggested that he could

join her organisation and take part in the Manchester mentoring

program.

After receiving my application, I was assigned to TiE Charter

Member, Walli Ullah, who, as well as being a successful film

producer, also runs ExecCoach.com which works with business

owners and senior executives to improve personal and business

success.

Walli met with me and so began my mentoring program. Says

Wayne, “Walli suggested that I look at solar energy as a new business,

very early on in our meetings, underscoring that environmental and

green issues were an impactful, global and current business area. He

suggested a couple of ideas to get the business off the ground, and

that’s how the Big Green Company was born.”

SUCCESS STORIES

Embarking on a new journey:Big Green Company, UK

Over the next 12 months, I met with Walli who endured my endless

frustrations of having tried every strategy in the book to get the

business underway. Walli’s response was always, “There is a

way, you must keep trying. I guess a good skill of being a mentor means

you have to be patient with the mentee; Walli passed this test with

distinction!” Wayne invested £20,000 personal savings, to start

the business, and 8 months down the line, he had made no

sales and there were no signs of earning money. Another

3 months and several methods were tried to sell solar energy -

including telesales and internet selling. “I was finally led into

the idea of opening a solar centre in a garden centre, which

would have fully operational displays that customers could see

working. From there, everything changed.”

At last, Wayne had found a formula that worked and the company

gradually took off. Today, after a year into his startup, he still

works 7 days a week, and has had consistent growth in business.

And the results of all the efforts are paying off. Big Green has a

turnover run rate of £1.2 million, and sells to 3 sites (Cheshire,

Southport, Edinburgh)

The UK market is set to see a significant increase in the number

of homes installing solar panels as a result of the government

feed in tariff. The Big green company is dedicated to helping

people understand the benefits of solar panels and making

solar energy more affordable. Through their network of solar

panel centres, people can actually see how solar panels

generate free hot water and free electricity. Moreover, the solar

panel has improved a lot over the last few years, which means

that even with the UK’s variable climate; the saving potential is

considerable.

Today, Wayne Morris, managing director of his own green

business says, “TiE Charter Member, Walli Ullah is now on board in

the company as a formalised non-executive director and I am sure our

relationship will continue to flourish. I would like to thank TiE for their

support in my business for the past 18 months and to personally thank

Walli for supporting me and giving me the idea to do solar energy.” The

target next year is to grow the business to £10m turnover, and a

5 year target of achieving £100m turnover. I feel confident that

with the right senior management team, we can achieve this

result and become the market leader in the installation of

domestic solar panels.

L to R: Sitashwa Srivastava and Manik Kinra, co-founders of Jade Magnet,

a novel online advertising platform

Jade Magnet benefits from a host of mentors at the TiE Bangalore

Chapter, as well as seasoned entrepreneurs and senior management in

the advertising and online world.

Jade Magnet is a crowdsourcing platform that brings together

more than 1100 creative providers on their network providing

services to more than 45 clients. The creative services offered on

the portal range the creative bandwidth – from branding,

advertising, animation, communication, graphic design, and

product design across various media.

Jade Magnet is like “ebay for creative designers”, says Sitashwa

Srivastava, cofounder of the internet venture. He is also quick to

point that they have spent considerable time improving processes

and identify pain points, on existing popular design portals.

It was 2008 when Sitashwa Srivastava and Manik Kinra, two

young entrepreneurs got together to create their own business.

They pitched a novel online advertising platform - “creADivity”

at TiE Bangalore Chapter ’s business mentoring program

“Entrepreneurial Acceleration Program” or TiE-EAP. Their project

won the award in the TiE-EAP program that year, and that’s when their

entrepreneurial journey began.

TiE provided exceptional mentoring support and great networking

opportunities to Sitash and Manik. The team was invited to TiE

Entrepreneurial Summit 2008, to meet potential mentors, investors

and people from related fields – all of which helped give shape to the

business model. Bringi Dev and Shashi Kiran, chapter management at

the time, introduced them to several key mentors at TiE Bangalore.

Sitash is grateful for TiE’s support for his new venture. He says, “A good

brand in your story helps you immensely. We were fortunate to be

incubated by a famous organization like TiE. We networked with several

people, and formed our first customer base from interactions at TiE

meetings and events.”

The TiE Bangalore team also introduced them to Muki

Regunathan, Founder & CEO of pepper square, a creative agency

pioneering in online media. Muki, who was once creative head

at Xerox Parc India development had over 15 year of branding,

and interactive marketing experience. With several common

interests, the three quickly developed a great rapport. Talking

about Muki as his mentor, Sitash says, “Muki is energetic,

passionate and could connect easily, being a young entrepreneur

Harnessing the wisdom of the Crowds:JadeMagnet, Bangalore

himself. He was secure in his business and industry, to show us

the ropes of the trade. He also had the vision to become an

advisor viewing that our online creative business model would

complement his existing business, in market segments that he

was unable to tap himself.”

Sitash and Manik received $200,000 seed investment from Muki.

The company was rebranded as “Jade Magnet” and started
