en mi natal República Dominicana conocí a un popular productor y conductor de un programa de investigaciones que se distinguía por su particular forma de despedirse. En cada despedida dejaba la sensación de que nunca más tendría-mos la oportunidad de reencontrarnos, una sensación que dejada incluso en sus compañeros de jornada.

Recientemente, en la juramentación del nuevo presidente de los Estados Unidos, vimos cómo en la histórica actividad el saliente George W. Bush, fue abucheado por una gran cantidad de personas. Por supuesto que la relevan-cia histórica y lo emotivo del evento ha dejado este acontecimiento como un hecho aislado y, en cierta medida, justo; dado las situaciones desagradables que tuvimos que experimentar gracias a la mala gestión del Sr. W. Bush.

Es probable que para el presidente saliente la forma como fue despedido del cargo público más importante de cualquier nación, no tenga importancia. A mí particularmente me deja como lec-ción que no basta con iniciar, saber ter-minar y lo que hacemos en el trayecto es lo más importante. No necesariamente tenemos que ser presidentes o ocupar posiciones relevantes, sea cual sea nuestro rol en la vida, nuestras acciones deben escribir las palabras fi nales que deseamos lean en nuestra lápida.

Si le correspondiera a la historia escribir lo que dirá la lápida del ex presidente Bush probablemente se escriba; “Aquí yace el peor presidente de Estados Unidos”.

Tal vez, amparado en esa premisa el productor y conductor al que me referí al iniciar este escrito, trataba de dejar su mejor imagen; aunque habría que saber si vive de acuerdo a como quiere ser recordado; de no ser así, su característica despedida no podrá cambiar nada.

Este mes recibimos con mucho entu-siasmo al Dr. Roberto González, uno de los más prestigiosos juristas del Estado; quien a partir de esta edición nos ofrecerá una columna de temas relacionados con la inmigración. A partir de esta edición nuestros lectores podrán disfrutar de interesantes y novedosos contenidos, como son nuestros segmentos “Al Día”, “Destinos”, además estarán al tanto de eventos relevantes del ámbito nacional. in my native Dominican Republic, I knew a popular producer and director of an investigative program who distin-guished himself by his particular way of saying goodbye. At every parting, he left the feeling that we would never again have the opportunity to meet, a feeling that was felt by all his compan-ions during the day.

Recently, at the historical inaugura-tion of the new president of the United States, we saw how the outgoing George W. Bush was jeered by a great number of people. Of course, the historical impor-tance and overall emotion of the event minimized this happening to an isolated and, in certain measures, justifi ed act, given the unpleasant situations we have had to experience thanks to the poor management of Mr. W. Bush.

It’s likely that for the outgoing presi-dent, the way he was seen out of the most important public offi ce of any nation is of no consequence. I myself am especially left with the lesson that it’s not enough to commence; to know how to fi nish and what we do along the way is more important. We do not nec-essarily have to be presidents or occupy prominent positions—whatever may be our roles in life, our actions must write the fi nal words that we wish to read on our graves.

If it were history’s job to engrave the tombstone of ex-president Bush, it would probably write, “Here lies the worst president of the United States.”

Perhaps with this premise in mind, the producer and director to whom I referred at the beginning of this piece was trying to leave us with the best image of himself; although had he known that if he lived in accordance with how he wished to be remembered, his typical way of saying goodbye would not change at all.

This month we enthusiastically wel-come Dr. Roberto González, one of the most prestigious attorneys in Rhode Island, who will now on off er us a column on topics related to immigration. ¡ooh la la París! La ciudad del amor, con sus legendarios monumentos, cuna de bohemios, artistas, y fantásticas historias de romances, que le han convertido en el destino por excelencia de los amantes. Una experiencia cotidiana en cualquier otro lugar, en la acogedora ciudad del amor se convierte en única. Desayunar en una de las creperías que pueblan sus calles, degustar un exquisito almuerzo gourmet, tomar un simple café o vino a media tarde, todo, absolutamente todo en París, se con-vierte en una experiencia inolvidable.

Una visita a la Torre Eiff el es parte esencial del recorrido. Otras actracciones de París son el Arco del Triunfo, ubicado en la plaza Charles de Gaulle. Napoleón Bonaparte decidió construir este arco tras su victoria en la batalla de Austerlitz en 1805.

El afamado museo de Louvre, el más visitado del mundo. Dentro de sus col-ecciones se encuentra la afamada Gio-conda de Leonardo da Vinci.

Realizing heR full potential as a woman through motherhood was always a part of Vanessa Toledo’s dreams. Three years and nine months after having made the decision to become a mother, and after two frustrating attempts, life presented her with a new opportunity.

News of her pregnancy filled her life with hope. Listening to the first heart-beats of the baby provoked conflicting feelings in Vanessa: the happiness of knowing that everything was fine in the environment inhabited by the life inside of her, and fear that, for whatever reason, the process could be interrupted.

A kick in Vanessa’s belly confirmed that, like her, Cristian was ready to fight for his life.

For someone with as intense and suc-cessful a professional life as her, sudden-ly transitioning from business activity to staying at home might not be easy. But, regardless of one thing or another, Vanessa had a firm conviction that any sacrifice that guaranteed that her child would be born healthy was worth it.

From 21 weeks on, lying in her bed,

Vanessa waited for months for the most important meeting of her existence. The vision of having her son in her arms, seeing his little face, and breastfeeding him, strengthened her will.

On January 10 at 9:20 am, Vanessa received Cristian in her arms. From then on, a stream of feelings and emotions never before experienced filled her life to the brim.

Since that moment, the days and nights no longer belong to her. She has not slept over three consecutive hours. Every part of her life is dedicated to caring for the well-being of Cristian. Meanwhile, he at his tender age knows her like no one else. Vanessa’s voice calms his cries, and when she takes him in her arms, he radiates tranquility.

And so it is that from the womb, Cristian and Vanessa have established bonds of love as deep and mysterious as life itself.

La noticia de su embarazo llenó su vida de ilusión. Escuchar los primeros latidos del corazón del bebé provocaron en Vanessa sentimientos encontrados; la alegría de saber de que todo estaba bien entorno a la vida que habitaba en ella y el temor de que por alguna razón se pudiera interrumpir el proceso.

Una patada en el vientre de Vanessa confirmaba que Cristian, al igual que ella, estaba dispuesto a luchar por su vida.

Para quien tiene una intensa y exitosa vida profesional como ella, cambiar súbitamente sus actividades de negocio para quedarse en casa, no debe ser fácil; pero entre lo uno y lo otro, Vanessa tuvo la firme convicción de que cualquier sacrificio que garantizara que su hijo naciera saludable valía la pena.

A partir de las 21 semanas, postrada en su cama, ella aguardó durante meses el más importante encuentro de su exis-tencia. La ilusión de tener a su hijo en brazos, conocer su carita, amamantarlo, cuidarlo, fortalecía su voluntad.

El 10 de enero a las 9:20 de la mañana, Vanessa recibe en sus brazos a Cristian. Desde entonces, un flujo de sentimien-tos y emociones nunca antes experi-mentados han colmado su vida.

Desde ese momento los días y noches no pertenecen a ella. No ha dormido tres horas corridas, cada espacio de su vida está dedicado a cuidar por el bienestar de Cristian. Mientras él a tan tierna edad, la conoce como nadie. La voz de Vanessa calma su llanto y cuando ella le toma en sus brazos, él proyecta tranquilidad.

Y es que desde el vientre, Cristian y Vanessa han establecido lazos de amor, tan profundos y misteriosos como la vida misma.

Since 1944 the established foreign press in Hollywood has counted on a fi lm and television awards ceremony considered to be one of the most important after the Oscars and the Emmys: the Golden Globe Awards.

The nominations are chosen by mem-bers of the press specially accredited in Hollywood, known as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who host the awards dinner celebration attended by those nominated, other journalists and some guests.

For many, the importance of the Golden Globes awards is such, given that it occurs right before the Oscars and obliges the Oscar Academy to seriously consider the works and artists awarded by the Holly-wood Foreign Press Association.

For the fi rst red carpet event of 2009 on January 11, movie and television stars turned to their favorite designers to capture our attention with their fi gures. Among all the different styles and designs, Jennifer López wore one of the most stunning of the evening.

ECAS inicia Mes Internacional del teatro 2009con la presentación de la obra “Tres Sombrero de Copa” de Miguel Miura Santos, ECAS Theater iniciará su acos-tumbrada temporada del Mes Interna-cional del Teatro. La comedia y drama escrita en 1932 cuenta la historia de un joven la noche antes de contraer matri-monio y cómo su vida cambia radical-mente al conocer a una joven.

José Luís Suazo, en el rol de Dionisio, María Cristina Betancourt y Marleny Luna, encarnando a Paula y Saul Ramos como Buby, junto a un reparto de acto-res y actrices de ECAS Theater, como son Iris Corporán, José Aleman, en los roles de Doña y Don Rosario, una persona de la tercera edad quien tiene como propiedad un hotel, también actuan Chantal Valenzuela, Varsobia Acosta, Sandra Antivar, Yamilka de los Santos, Maritza Martell, Carlos I. Perez Benitez, Carlos Pressiga, Victor Perez, Jose Mar-cell Rodriguez, Jose Miguel , Christian Lopez y Omar Serrano.

La divertida comedia es dirigida por Francis Parra, Directora Artistica de ECAS Theater. Aunque la obra corresponde al siglo pasado, está vinculada con la vida actual. Tres Sombreros de Copa supone, por su originalidad, una rup-tura completa con el teatro cómico del siglo pasado. La asociación inverosímil de situaciones, los diálogos poco lógicos y los juegos lingüísticos la aproximan al teatro vanguardista de Samuel Beckett o Ionesco. Tres sombreros de copa desar-rolla el tema de la libertad alcanzada y perdida.

Tres Sombreros de Copa es posible en parte gracias a la generosidad y el apoyo de Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, del Department of Art, Culture and Tourism of Providence City Hall.”

ecaS TheaTeR is pleased to open the new International Latino Theater Month with Tres Sombreros de Copa, Miguel Mihura Santos, 1932 comedy-drama about a young man who is going to be marry and the night before the wed-ding while he is waiting in a hotel room, he meets a woman that will change his life.

Jose Luis Suazo as Dionisio, Saul Ramos as Buby and Marleny Luna as Paula, and includes ECAS Theater’s repertory actors Maria Cristina Betancur also as Paula, Iris Corporan and Jose Aleman as Dona/Don Rosario as an elderly person who own a small hotel, Chantal Valen-zuela, Varsobia Acosta, Sandra Antivar, Yamilka de los Santos, Maritza Martell, Carlos Israel Benitez, Carlos Pressiga, Victor Perez, Jose Marcell Rodriguez and Jose Miguel.

The play elapses in a single scenic space -a room of hotel- and in a single night, the eve of the marriage between Dionisio and a virtuous young lady. This night will be the one that discover to Dionisio that perhaps the marriage be not the life that desires. When, drunk, immersed in the dance that is organized in its room, surrounded by unusual per-sonages, exclaims “I never have been so happy,” we realize the fragility of the road of the marriage in which is going to embark. Funny and passionate, Tres Sombreros awake the bittersweet flavor that leaves a humor that only tries to camouflage the bitterness of the life of its personages.

ECAS Theater Artistic Director Francis Parra said Tres Sombreros de Copa is a play from last century in which we can track a lot of our current life. I hope audiences will connect with the play’s timely themes.

Tres Sombreros de Copa is made pos-sible in part by a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, through a grant from the Department of Art, Culture and Tourism of Providence City Hall.

“5To piSo” es la nueva producción dis-cográfi ca del cantautor guatemalteco Ricardo Arjona, y que con solo un mes de haber sido lanzada al mercado vendió, solo en la ciudad de México, 50.000 copias, augurando sumarse a la lista de exitos que nos tiene acostumbarados Arjona.

La producción tiene como premisa a un cronista que mira por la ventana desde ese quinto piso a la sociedad, a la baila-rina del sexto, a la gente que vive de rutina, a la soledad propia y ajena, a los amantes, a la mujer que se convierte en pesadilla y a la desdicha de extrañar a quien ya no está.

Para el autor de “Dame”, este disco marca una nueva etapa en su carrera, ya que es el primero producido después del artista haber puesto fi n a la relación que mantuvo por más de quince años con Sony BMG, con la que llegó a realizar trece exitosas prducciones.

Los temas incluídos en “5to piso”, la nueva produccion de Arjona, han sido produci-dos musicalmente por Tommy Torres.

una Relación de pareja inicia con sentimientos de atracción mutua. En un momento particular de sus vidas comparten gustos, ideas y valores, así como conflictos y anhelos. En la etapa inicial se suele tener cuidado con los detalles, cada encuentro llena a la pareja de ilusión y felicidad; esos agradables momentos inundan los instantes en que la otra persona no está, nutriendo y potenciando la relación.

En el proceso se viven muchas etapas. Si bien es importante el amor, también el compromiso, responsabilidad y res-peto mutuo, tiene mucho que ver con el fortalecimiento de la relación.

Pero como es sabido, en el amor no todo es color de rosa. Las parejas entran en crisis. Hay amores capaces de sobrepasar todo y renovarse; esos duran toda una vida. Y hay amores que se distancian y se agotan, todo depende de lo que estén dispuestos a hacer la por salvar su relación.

Una crisis es una invitación a buscar nuevos puntos de encuentros. Exige transformaciones, ya que si no se hace nada por salir de ella destruye. Una crisis de pareja puede enseñar a amar más y mejor

comunícate: Dialogar, saber decir las cosas, saber callar y rectificar cuando se está equivocado, es fundamental. Cualquier acuerdo debe establecerse sobre la base de la comunicación; con-ocer qué le agrada o no a tu pareja es fundamental. Establece mecanismos efec-tivos, si quieres que te escuchen, escucha.

Toma iniciativa: Trata como deseas que te traten. La mayoría de las veces se espera que la otra persona de más. Lo primero es dejar a un lado el orgullo, siendo honestos y reconocer qué está dispuesto a hacer cada uno para mejorar la relación.

Respétate: Si no vas ha cumplir una promesa, no la hagas. En ocasiones ocurre que una de las parejas, luego de haberse comprometido a cambiar algún comportamiento determinado, solo lo hacen en presencia de la otra persona.

eSTe eRa uno de los refranes más popu-lares de mi abuela cuando enfrentaba adversidad en la vida. Es un mensaje de esperanza pero también habla acerca del hecho de que todo problema even-tualmente pasa a ser parte de la historia. Durante la inauguración del Presidente Barack Obama el saliente, George W. Bush, fue abucheado y maltratado por el público debido a su mala adminis-tración. No hay que ser liberal ni con-servador para saber que la historia condenará a este individuo como uno de los peores presidentes. Su decisión de atacar a Iraq, el uso de tortura y la todavía viva recesión económica, son manchas indelebles en la solapa del que dijo que si no estábamos con él, estábamos con los terroristas. Aquel que piensa que la posición de presidente es inconsecuente le convendría estudiar los últimos 8 años. El efecto no es solo político, sino sicológico.

El sábado después de la inauguración salí con mi familia a celebrar el cumplea-ños de mi hijo mayor, y en el medio de la recesión económica más grande en nuestra generación, no pudimos encon-trar un restaurante que no tuviese una espera de más de 45 minutos. ¿Cómo es posible (me pregunte yo) que cuando tenemos un desempleo de 10% en RI haya tanta gente comiendo fuera? La respuesta la vi en las caras de los usu-arios que se veían felices y tranquilos frente a una economía en crisis. Todo el mundo hablaba acerca de la inaugura-ción y el hecho de que había regresado la esperanza a l país y al mundo, y de que a pesar de la crisis era evidente que todo había cambiado de color y que estábamos como cuando Reagan, amaneciendo en América. Estará aman-eciendo pero no sabemos si lo que viene es el sol o más nubes en el horizonte.

A pesar de su destreza con sus discur-sos el presidente va a tener que forjar una coalición bipartidista para poder manejar eficientemente este gobierno. Aun cuando sabemos que ganó con una gran mayoría, no existe una may-oría absoluta en el Congreso para poder aprobar todos sus ideas. La crisis a la que estamos enfrentando es una crisis global que tomo muchos años en ser creada, y no se va a solucionar en unos cuantos meses. Los EU dependerán de

la cooperación de las economías y gobi-ernos internacionales, y estos tienen sus propios constituyentes a los que hay que complacer. Impulsos nacionalistas aquí y en el extranjero amenazan reducir la voluntad política creada por la glo-balización, y podrían detener el avance hacia reformas migratorias y tratados de libre comercio, a medida que ambos movimientos siguen su inexorable desti-no de crear un solo mercado mundial.

Finalmente es la eterna batalla entre la autocracia y la democracia lo que definirá el próximo término. Los gobi-ernos capitalistas de Europa y América nacionalizan bancos y se apoderan de amplios segmentos del mercado de valores, a la misma vez que los comuni-stas y los socialistas expanden la propie-dad privada, liberalizan sus mercados y venden Coca Cola como si hubiese sido creada por Marx o Fidel Castro. El mundo entero se está moviendo hacia el centro político ya que ambos extre-mos han demostrado su ineficiencia y su incapacidad de continuar avanzando el bienestar económico de los pueblos. Obama debe reconocer estos cambios y navegarlos cuidadosamente. Porque “No por mucho madrugar, amanece más temprano”

ThiS iS one of my grandmother’s favorite saying whenever she was facing a dif-ficult time. It was a message of hope, but also of the healing power of time. During Barack Obama’s inauguration the outgoing president was booed by the audience as a result of the general perception of his administration as an incompetent one. You do not have to be a liberal or a conservative to know that history will judge him as one of the worst presidents ever. His decision to attack Iraq, the use of torture and the still ever present recession, are indelible marks on the lapel of the man who said that we were either with him or with the terrorists. Those of you who feel that the position of president is inconsequential should study the last 8 years. His effect was not just political but psychological as well.

The Saturday after the inauguration I went out with my family to celebrate

my eldest’s birthday and in the middle of the worst economic recession of our times we were not able to find a res-taurant that did not have a 45 minutes wait. How is it possible (I said to myself ) that in this climate of 10% unemploy-ment everyone is out to eat? The answer was in the faces of the patrons that appeared happy and relaxed in spite of a sad economy. Everyone was talking about the inauguration and the fact that hope had sprung anew in the country and the world. It was evident that it was like Reagan’s “morning in America” once again. Dawn may be approaching but we are not sure if what’s coming in the horizon is the sun or more clouds.

In spite of his great powers of ora-tory the new president will need to build a bipartisan coalition in order to manage efficiently his mandate. Even though he won by a wide margin he still faces a divided Congress and his ideas may face difficult times ahead. This crisis took a long time to build and it will not go away in just a few months. The US depends on the cooperation of foreign economies and governments whose own constituencies demand to be pleased. Nationalistic impulses here and abroad threaten a reduction in the political will created by globalization, which could derail immigration reform and free markets treaties as these move inexorably towards the creation of a single world market.

Finally it is the eternal battle between autocracy and democracy what will mark the next term. The capitalist societies of Europe and America will nationalize banks and will take over large segments of the market, as the communists and socialists expand private ownership, liberalize markets and sell Coca Cola like it was a product of Marx or Fidel Castro. The World is moving towards the political center since both extremes have failed to keep prosperity going. Obama needs to recognize these trends and sail these waters carefully. Because “An early rise does not change the time it dawns”

¿Habrá reforma migratoria en el 2009?Will there be Immigration Reform in 2009?

con loS problemas que tenemos en la economía es difícil recordar la última vez que el Presidente Barack Obama hizo referencia a inmigración — una cuestión de campaña que él prometió abordar en su primer año en el poder. Sin embargo, los activistas a ambos lados del intenso debate migratorio todavía están aun preparando para la batalla política. Los defensores de los inmigrantes se han hecho una promesa a sí mismos: mantener a Obama responsable de sus promesas de campaña. Al otro lado de la cerca, tenemos activistas presionando por restricciones migratorias en base a su resentimiento por sus pérdidas electora-les, pero al mismo tiempo permanecen optimistas de la grave situación económi-ca ya que impedirá la elaboración de un programa masivo de amnistía aceptable por el público en general.

Los dirigentes nacionales defensores de los inmigrantes han dicho que ellos esperarán con paciencia mientras Obama tiene cuidado del desastre económico, pero que ellos no quieren dejar que la crisis ponga a un lado la cuestión. Nada específico se ha discu-tido aún respecto a los puntos concretos que una nueva reforma migratoria con-tendría, pero los defensores concuerdan que para una reforma de inmigración sea eficaz, ésta debe arreglar todas las partes rotas. Los defensores de imponer restricciones migratorias cuentan con que mientras Obama desee encon-trar apoyo para algunas medidas con una buena posibilidad de pasar en el Congreso, no hay ningún modo que él aspirare obtener una amnistía masiva. Ellos creen que Obama “cometería un suicidio político” si tratara de legalizar a millones de trabajadores no autorizados con tantos ciudadanos americanos des-empleados. Sin duda habrá una lucha.

En mi opinión, durante los primeros meses de la administración Obama veremos algunas concesiones inmedi-atas, como utilización de su discreción presidencial para reducir las incursio-nes de inmigración que se han venido dando sin precedentes y que aun están en marcha. Esto servirá como un pago al contado para asegurar a la gente que él está haciendo lo mejor que puede, bajo circunstancias normales. WiTh The problems we have in the econ-omy it is hard to remember the last time President Barack Obama made any men-tion of immigration — a campaign issue he pledged to tackle in his first year in office. Nevertheless, activists on both sides of the fiery immigration debate are still preparing for political battle. Immi-grant advocates are making a pledge of their own: to hold Obama accountable for his campaign promises. On the other side of the fence, activists pushing for immigration restrictions feel deflated

by their electoral losses but remain optimistic that hard economic times will impede making a mass amnesty pro-gram palatable to the general public.

Leading national immigrant advo-cates said they’ll wait patiently while Obama takes care of the economic mess, but they’re not willing to let the crisis push the issue aside. No specif-ics have yet been discussed as to what a new immigration bill would contain, but advocates agree that to be effec-tive, immigration reform must fix all the broken parts. Immigration restrictionist advocates counter that while Obama may be willing to risk backing some measures with a good chance of pass-ing Congress, there’s no way he’ll try for mass amnesty. They believe that Obama would “commit political suicide” if he tried to legalize millions of unauthorized workers with so many Americans out of work. No doubt there will be a fight.

In my opinion, during the first few months of the Obama administration we will see some immediate conces-sions, such as Obama using presidential discretion to slow the unprecedented and ongoing series of immigration raids. This will serve as a down payment to assure people he’s doing his best under current circumstances. Before the end of this year, narrower proposals should pass, such as: The DREAM Act, giving as many as 1 million students who are in the country illegally a chance to go to college or join the military and eventually gain permanent residence, and AGJOBS, a bill creating a new temporary agricultural worker program. Finally, before the end of 2010, I do believe we will have Com-prehensive Immigration Reform

My Parental Tug-Of-War (Part I)in my Spanglish opinion

Alright, so like many of you, my wife and I agree and disagree on a million things. We can go back and forth on a slew of topics from our take on the bible to my dreams about Jenny Lo. However, nowhere are we more in a comedic divide than when it comes to how we handle the upbringing of our kids. First and foremost, let me preface today’s column by sharing that we have three beautiful, somewhat normal niños (two teenage boys and a ten year old daughter) who are very well mannered, well-behaved, caring, easy going, and driven. They are outstanding students, practical jokers, and have developed a great sense of humor. And while we are okay with taking some of the credit (I take most), we both realize how blessed we are to have the wonderful teachers and adults that have come in and out of their lives.

Now, my wife and I literally grew up on the same street in NYC. We mingled with the same friends, ate at the same Cuchifritos, and dealt with very similar social conditions. And so it blows my mind that we pulled such different les-sons from our experiences. The same lessons we now apply to our everyday lives. The overall picture goes as fol-lows; she is an incredibly attentive and nurturing mommy with a “performance deserves reward” system especially around Christmas time. I am also nurtur-ing and attentive, but my style is more along the lines of “no matter how well you performed, there is no reason on earth why you would need ANOTHER gaming console en esta casa.” As the caring and wonderful flower that she is, my super-mom-esposa is always dash-ing out of work, flying through traffic, and pulling up on two wheels in front of their schools so no one has to walk home in the rain.

On the other hand, I… who remem-bers what it felt like to stand at the bus stop in the dead of winter with frozen Geri Curls on my head (yes, I had hair once), know that sometimes walking in the rain does a body and a soul good. My wife will buy them winter gloves, blow her top because they lost one, and run out to buy another pair so no one freezes or looks “ridiculous” this winter (it’s only $3 at Walmart). I, on the other hand, welcome the lesson learned from

ridicule and will take it one step further by making them wear whatever gloves they can mix and match from the “sin-gles” bucket (because nothing makes a fashion-conscious child appreciate a new pair of gloves more than wearing florescent pink on one hand with glow-in-the-dark yellow on the other).

My last example is perhaps my favor-

ite in this parental tug of war with my wife. She feels that kids should respect their parents, not fear them. A belief I agree with whole-heartedly. She, how-ever, insists that they respect her but fear me. My father had a cool thing he would say which was “kids have to fear something. A fearless child is a child heading for trouble.” So I have no prob-lem with being feared, but before you go calling DCYF on me, allow me a brief clarification.

This is not about corporal punishment. That’s not my style and mi correa only holds up my pants (which seem a little tighter these days). The fear I speak of has to do with the boundaries and con-sistency in consequences I have layed down. But, just out of curiosity we made a little bet and posed the question to our kids. Did they respect us or fear us? Their answers surprised us both and I will share them with you in March.

However, I’ll throw the question to you. Should kids respect or fear their parents? Is it a little bit of both? Why or why not? Post your replies on my blog (www.GETvicramos.com) and we’ll make a nice wordy mondongo for the March issue.

DeSDe mi última columna en Tiempo Social, hemos experimentado como nación un cambio monumental. El 20 de enero, todos en nuestro país, y en el mundo entero, acogimos la inauguración de un nuevo Presidente Americano como nunca antes. Para poder proveer un lugar digno de este momento histórico, invité al publico en general para que me acompañaran al Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC por sus siglas en inglés) para atestiguar cuando Barack Obama llegó a ser nuestro Presidente numero 44. ¡Más de 2,500 personas se dieron cita al PPAC para este grandioso evento! ¡A los lectores de esta publicación quienes estuvieron con nosotros en PPAC para darle la bienvenida a nuestro nuevo líder, muchas gracias!

El mes pasado, 22 procuradores generales junto conmigo nos unimos a pedirles a los líderes de la Cámara de los Estados Unidos y el Senado, para que el Código de Insolvencia Financiera sea enmendado para permitir que el Tribunal Federal de Insolvencia Financiera proteja a familias de embargos hipotecarios.

Una mirada a nuestros vecindarios revela la terrible realidad que el numero creciente de embargos hipotecarios priva a las personas de la capacidad de permanecer como propietarios y a que los arrendatarios terminen en la calle. La crisis de embargos hipotecarios es una tragedia que debe de ser detenida para evitar más daño y destrucción. La enmienda que hemos propuesto es un planteamiento prudente para aliviar esta crisis y proteger a más personas.

También soy uno de los procuradores generales pertenecientes al acuerdo con Dell, Inc. Bajo dicho acuerdo, Dell proporcionará reembolso a los clientes quienes tengan problemas con las pro-mociones, ofertas de rebaja, ayuda téc-nica y políticas de reparación de dicha empresa. Consumidores de Rhode Island han experimentado dificultades significantes de parte del departamento de servicio al consumidor de Dell. Otros aplicaron por financiamiento de cero por ciento de interés pero en lugar fueron sorprendidos con tasas de interés mucho más altas.

Cualquier consumidor de Rhode Island que tenga una queja válida sobre un producto o servicio adquirido entre Abril 1, 2005 y Abril 13, 2009, puede ser elegible para un reembolso.

La fecha límite para presentar una queja es el 13 de abril de este año.

We’ve expeRienceD a monumen-tal change, as a nation, since my last column appeared in Tiempo Social. On January 20th, our country, and the world, embraced the inauguration of a new American President as never before. In order to provide a wonderful venue in which people could come together to celebrate this historic and groundbreak-ing moment, I invited the general public to join me at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC), to bear witness to Barack Obama becoming our 44th Presi-dent. More than 2,500 people packed PPAC to do just that! To the readers of

this publication who watched with us at PPAC—to welcome our new leader, and to rejoice—many thanks!

Last month, 22 attorneys general and I called on the leadership of the United States House and Senate, urging that the U.S. Bankruptcy Code be amended to permit federal Bankruptcy Courts to protect families from foreclosure.

A look at our neighborhoods reveals all too painfully that the record number of foreclosures is robbing people of the ability to remain as homeowners and causing tenants to be tossed out on the streets. The foreclosure crisis is a tragedy that must be contained to stem outrageous damage and destruction. Our proposed amendment is a sensible approach to help alleviate this crisis and protect countless more people from being victimized.

I am also one of the attorneys gen-eral who has entered into an agreement with Dell, Inc. under which Dell will pro-vide restitution to customers who had problems with the company’s financing promotions, rebate offers, technical sup-port, and repair policies.

Rhode Island consumers have expe-rienced significant customer service abuses by Dell. Others applied for zero-percent financing but were instead ambushed by much higher interest rates.

Any Rhode Island consumer with a valid complaint about a Dell product or service purchased between April 1, 2005 and April 13, 2009, may be eligible for restitution.

The deadline for filing a claim is April 13th of this year.

En el mes de noviembre hizo su debut en un show de Los Angeles el Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 Spyder 2009. El nuevo Spyder estará propulsado por el mismo motor V10 de 5.2 litros que esta disponible en la versión coupé. Generará una potencia de 560 hp y un torque de mas de 380 lb ft.. Hará de 0 a 60 mph en 4 segundos y puede llegar a alcanzar una potencia de 201 mph. Con una nueva y mas liviana transmisión, que le permite mejorar el tiempo de los cambios en un 40%, asociado a un nuevo chasis, y una nueva suspensión. También tendrá el sistema de tracción total de Lamborghini. A pesar de que tiene una performance mejorada, el consumo de combustible y las emisiones de CO2 fueron reducidas en un 18%. La nueva sensación llegará a los clientes para la primavera de este año.

Samsung LCD ultra- delgado

Si pienSa que posee el televisor más moderno del mercado probablemente cambie de opinión al saber que la Samsung lanzará muy pronto su televisor con panel ultra-delgado de LCD. Este nuevo modelo será tan fi no que podría compararse con un cuadro de pared de 39 pulgadas de grosor.

Salir con frecuencia a centros de diversión nocturno o simplemente decidirse a elevar los sentidos escuchando una hermosa composición musical a todo volumen, podría tener consecuencias negativas no solo para los oídos, sino también para el corazón y los pulmones ya que estos órganos responden al compás del sonido musical. Así lo afi rma la universidad de Pavia, Italia, a través de un estudio en el que da cuenta de que quienes escuchan música excesivamente alta y acelerada, sufren de presión elevada y ritmo cardíaco precipitado. La reco-mendación es que al escuchar música modere el volumen de su radio.

DeSDe la década de los 80’s la Polaroit lanzó al mercado una cámara fotográfi ca de revelado instantáneo que dejó de fabricar el año pasado, tanto la calidad de las imágenes como la manejabilidad de la cámara complicaban el proceso.

La misma casa Polaroit anuncia que en el mes de abril tendremos a mano la versión digital del la 5 MP de resolución, una cámara que imprimirá la imagen al minuto de ser tomada la foto. El nombre de la cámara es PoGo, y se venderá en los Estados Unidos al precio de 200. A diferencia de su predecesora, que revelaba las fotos mediante un proceso de reacción química, incluirá una impresora en miniatura para imprimir imágenes de un tamaño de 5 por 7,5 centímetros.

El papel especial sobre las que se imprimen se puede desprender para conver-tirlas en una pegatina, que se adhiere a la puerta del frigorífi co, un libro, un PC o cualquier otra superfi cie.

Otra ventaja sobre las antiguas cámaras es que antes de imprimir una imagen podemos verla en la pantalla LCD y no necesitará tóner ni cartucho de tinta.
