Vector Bicycle

Date:October 24, 2014

Description:I wanted to created a simplistic, iconic representation of a bicycle. I worked to mkae this designprocess heavy, involving more sketching and conceptual thinking that in the past. I challengedmyself to use a combination of skills and tools in order to broaden my creative horizons andworking knowledge of Illustrator.

Program:Illustrator

Process:This project proved to be rather difcult. I felt overwhelmed by the possibilities and my creativityturned easily into distraction. Overall though, I’m content with the end product.

The theme for that week was variation. In my sketches, I didn’t start with a clear vision of whatmessage I wanted to send, but I liked the idea of doing something in the retro realm. When I gotto my nal draft it ended up having a more modern feel that is somewhat reminiscent of the old

school iPod commercials, which I love.

My initial lack of direction was represented in my chaotic sketching process. I played with different

curved and straight approaches and considered going for a photorealistic, themed (i.e. steampunk, abstract, etc.), or stylistic design. Obviously, I ended up with a stylistic approach. I initiallycarried these designs into my digital renditions before nally narrowing it down and nding a

concept I loved.

I got quite a bit of feedback throughout my process. I played with the idea of using gradients orstaying at which helped my narrow my vision signicantly. Once I denitively decided to nix the

photorealism, I was able to focus on the most basic shapes and get to work. I also wanted to usenavy, grey and yellow as my color palette but ended up loving my bee colors.

I think this is a unique way of tackling the broad topic of ‘bicycle’, the only direction given for theproject. I love that so many people in my class went for the entire bike but I was inspired when Ithought about the analog lab at Facebook. I wanted to make something that both fullled my

project requirements and verged on a poster-like design, something I think I did. My process was

chaotic at rst, but I ended up with a strong point of view. I forced myself to bulk up my stroke andbalance my at concept with illustrating some perspective. It was in no way easy. As usual, I feltin over my head, but I believe I grew as a designer and pushed myself past many of the creativewalls I’ve enforced throughout the years.

Internet MontageDate:June 1, 2014

Description:This is an artistic representation of the Internet as an international unier/portal. I really pushedmyself with this project and really let the design motivate the message. I struggled to unifyeverything until my nal inspiration took shape.

Program:Photoshop

Process:The objective was to represent the Internet. The code and circuit boards surround the earth andcreate the portal of information that is the Internet. I nd it amazing that this powerful tool has hadsuch an incredible impact on globalization, creating a common bond between all members ofthe human family, and providing unrestricted content to be easily accessed.

The center shape was created with a picture of a swirl made by light painting (a photographytechnique that uses exposure to create shapes and lines using light). I used a mask to blend theimage into the background. The secondary circular shape, which looks like the earth, was createdusing one light painting picture that has an umbrella shape. I copied and rotated the image 4times and used a mask to blend them together. A subtract lter was added to those layers.

The next layer is a concrete texture with warm red colored veins at 10% opacity. After that, an

oxidized metal texture layer was added at 24% opacity. I used a difference lter and a mask inthe shape of a circle that created some of the glow around the round element that looks like theearth. The next four layers are pictures of circuit boards, in each corner, that were blended into thebackground and a screen lter was applied.

Finally, I added a text layer of 0’s and 1’s that covered the entire canvas. This is meant to mimiccode. After changing it to a futuristic font and rasterizing the font, I lowered the opacity to 30%. Iused a mask to eliminate the text over the circular elements.

Vector WatchDate:October 10, 2014

Description:This watch was created to expand my knowledge of Illustrator and work on conceptual design.I pushed myself to do an Up inspired time piece because it was challenging. People know andlove this lm and I wanted to do it justice. As always, I wanted to tell a story.

Program:Illustrator

Process:For last two weeks I produced a vector timepiece. I found the process of creating this design fairlysimilar to reinventing the wheel- maddeningly simple- but I am happy with where I ended up.

At the beginning of the process, I wanted to play with realism but found very little inspiration when

pursuing that path. During the sketching process I really spent a lot of time creating clock hands.I think that was mainly because I wanted to be as elementary as I could in deciding my directionand audience. At one point I doodled a shape that looked fairly similar to a block letter ‘I’. Itreminded me somehow of the Incredible’s symbol. With the genius of Pixar playing in my mind, Iquickly felt incredibly inspired (pun intended).

From there, the random blobs on my page began looking like clouds and the transition from myhead being in the clouds, to a house being in the clouds, went rapidly. I wanted to create awatch inspired by the heartbreaking character from Up. Ellie has a fairly short appearance in thelm but made a huge impact. At some future date I hope to create a matching Carl watch.

I started with the watch face and worked backward. The bottle cap design was made to payhomage to the grape soda bottle cap pin that endears Carl to Ellie. I thought of it from thepoint of view that this sweet and sentimental husband was making a watch for his beloved wife. Her round features inspired me to keep things round. Their dream house had to be a dominantfeature and became my hour hand. I also wanted to have a matching, but differentiated strayballoon that acted as my minute hand. After all, hours pass more slowly but minutes escape us.The band is supposed to match the shingles that make up the entire front of the home. I nished itoff with a happy burnt orange to accompany the cool blue design.

I loved pushing myself and making something that was fun and playful. I learned how better touse gradients- and not have it look hideous. I learned how to balance a at design with more3d, realistic effects. The process of creating the bottle cap face was especially challenging and Ilearned more about the ins and outs of the star tool and shape building tools. Overall, it was a lotof fun, and amazingly overwhelming to get back into the Adobe Illustrator saddle. Something tells

me I have quite a ride ahead of me, but the only direction I have to go is Up (once again, punintended).

Event PosterDate:May 17, 2014

Description:This poster was created to advertise a charity fundraiser. The purpose is for education and will notactually occur. I used a variety of different design elements, which will be explained below. Themain focal point is a scan of candy that I edited to maintain the original color in the rst portionand then took on a blue hue for the rest.

Program:Microsoft Word

Process:After my pre-design/sketches were done I created this project entirely in Microsoft Word (and in

the process gained a renewed appreciation for Adobe).

The objective was to advertise a 5K walk through central park in order to help end childhoodobesity. However, within the design, I tried to send another subconscious message. I tried tohave the left side of the image represent what the world sees when they see candy. On the rightside, I made it look somewhat like an x-ray in order to communicate the health implications ofchildhood obesity.

I rst scanned my image and saved it as a jpeg. Before scanning I set my preset size andresolution.

I then opened a word document. I opened two versions of my picture. In Microsoft Word I

cropped each image to match up perfectly. After that, I added an effect that gave the rightside of the image a blue hue (instead of the original yellow, orange and red). Then I created mytwo boxes. The one on the left covered the portion of the image where the colors changed. Thebar on the right was created and lled with a teal color that I got using the magnifying glass tool

(eyedropper). Then I created my text. The title and statistic are in a sans serif, decorative font soI paired that with an old-style font for the information. I changed the kerning on the date, time, place, and benefactor to be equal in length. I changed the margins of the statistic to match thewidth of the 5K. Finally, I made the text red or white. I chose to have the red where I did in orderto have diagonal ow, balance and repetition.

Note: While the statistic technically has an orphan, I decided that it didn’t look alone because itwas a long word and the size of the text box was narrow.

Icon setDate:November 20, 2014

Description:I wanted to create an icon set that had unique parts that contributed to a greater whole. I usedsimilar icon shapes in order to achieve that end. Again, I wanted to have a process heavy projectthat focused on thoughtful sketching and story telling.

Program:Illustrator

Process:That week I had a million ideas that I would’ve enjoyed pursuing but I went with the one thatchallenged me most. And I certainly did feel challenged. I wanted to portray superheroes,

notable villains, Disney princesses, or Americana set (The last one has nothing to do with theothers, I know). I quickly narrowed it down to my princesses. I thought it would be a fun way topush myself. I generally create very geometric, simplistic design, but this was far more feminineand dainty. What a wonderful challenge!

I spent a lot of my time on sketching, a process I usually dread. For this project thought it wasmassively important to get my vision and sketch strong ideas. I went back to my sketches far morefrequently than other projects. Spending that much time drawing certainly paid off.

I decided to portray the following lms: Cinderella, Princess and the Frog, Aladdin, Snow White,Brave, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Frozen, the Little Mermaid, Tangled, andSleeping Beauty.

When I brought my sketches into vector format, I realized quickly that my icons wouldn’t have thegestalt I was hoping to create. I didn’t want the circle to be a completely necessary portion ofthe design, but that it simply alluded to it. With that in mind, I had to nd other unifying elementsand that’s when I decided to keep the bottom circular shape in every design. Which begged thequestion, ‘How?’. Almost every design I had needed to be redone to accommodate this new

goal.

From there, it had a lot to do with transferring my sketches to Illustrator using my Wacom Tablet(Bamboo) and then making them look more professional by using the appropriate tools andmaking everything look as it should. I wanted to the design to be somewhat abstract but instantlyrecognizable. I think accomplished that in this icon set.

I used consistently repeating colors throughout the set. I used the shape of the icon to add gestaltand had similar content matter for each icon. None of them were the actual princesses, but itclearly alluded to a specic movie or story. At 1 square inch you should still be able to recognizethe characters and their movies.

This project took far longer than I ever expected but I think it turned out pretty well.

LogosDate:June 8, 2014

Description:These logos have been designed for a company called the fox café (though it doesn’t actually exist). Theobjective is simply to create a strong brand that resonates with those who see it.

Program:Illustrator

Process:I used the pen tool, shape tools, blob paint tool, brush tool, and text tools. I started with an extensivesketching process (far lengthier than usual). Once I decided on some rough designs, I started theIllustrator process. After working for quite some time using the pen and shape tools to mimic my sketches,

I nally gained access to my friend’s Wacom tablet. I loved it. I scrapped my initial work and did all myoutlines with the Wacom tablet. What a difference it made! I nally added the color schemes and naledits using a good old fashion mouse. The blob paint tool was used to color my foxes until I decided ona more simplistic design. I ended up with three very different designs with veins of similarity throughout. Iwanted to create a specic brand, but give different options to communicate that. That’s why I chose to

use similar elements and the same font but drastically vary the colors and styles. While all are variations ofa fox made into a mug, I feel comfortable with the differences I offered.

Webpage Design

Date:July 1, 2014

Description:This project is an html website, that uses CSS, to showcase my logo design process in an infographiclike page.

Programs:Illustrator, Text Wrangler

Objectives:I simply wanted to display my design process for the logo in a visually appealing way.

Process:I used text wrangler to construct both documents. I rst set up my header, and formatted it so that

my logo was on the left and the title was right justied (with padding), with the logo bleeding into thebody. This took a while to gure out, but I’m happy I took that time. Next, I created all the pngs foreach section, using illustrator (process, color, audience, skills). I made sure that the colors matchedmy logo and that they played off of the heading fonts in the webpage. I then proofed my copy (434words). I had to work with page breaks and the size of my section images to eliminate orphans and

make it look the way I wanted it to. Finally, I added a hyperlink to my blog and closed the body anddocument.

Description:This is a letterhead I created for myself that ties in with my purpose of helping people andcompanies effectively communicate with others. I was trying to create a personal brand/identity.While I wouldn’t feel comfortable putting a professional title during my education, I do want tocommunicate that my specialty is communication.

Program:Illustrator

Process:I started by creating the speech bubble using the ellipse tool and a polygon tool (set to thee sides),and converting one of the points to a rounded corner. I then used to shape builder tool to combinethem. I lled them with a striking red color. Next I created a text box and used my name in the samered color. After creating the outlines, I used the shape builder tool to delete my rst name from thetext bubble. I used the same bubble to do the same thing with my initials. Then I created the shapeof my card and added my personal information. For my letterhead, I created a red block with therectangle tool. I then used the shape builder tool to delete the bubble and my last name from theshape which inverted the colors. I then added my information below. Finally, I added the same

speech bubble to the bottom and set it to an 8% opacity.

BrochureDate:

Description:This is a brochure, made in the shape of a shoe, created to showcase a company’s new collection. Iwanted to communicate the nature of the company. This is a classy business, just like the men they designfor. We are an old company who deliver quality products, especially with the ‘Clarence” line.

Programs:Illustrator, InDesign

Process:I used an image of my great great grandpa Abner Mack Osborn as the model for my logo. Then I spentquite a bit of time making paper mock-ups and nally took it to my computer, where I used clippingmasks, dashed lines and plastic wrapped circles (lace eyelets). This took a massive amount of time and awide variety of tools.

Because this was such a sentimental project, I paid special attention to the story of the brochure. I sold theidea in my head that this was my family’s company and wanted to honor my grandfather’s legacy. Hewas the epitome of class and nothing was more tting that doing a dress shoe.

Creating the correct shapes and textures were difcult at the time, but those challenges paled incomparison to the printing process. Becuase of the unique brochure shape- which I was proud of- I

struggled to have everything line up perfectly, cut carefully and fold cleanly. It took hours at the printers toline it up just the way I wanted.

Description:A black and white ier used to advertise a Graduate Leadership conference.

Program:InDesign

Objectives:I am trying to attract professionally motivated graduating seniors to attend a leadership conference.

Process:I rst selected my image and opened it in Photoshop. I erased the right side of the image after his armusing the Magic Eraser tool and Eraser. I then saved the image and opened it in InDesign. There I addeda block to extend the column using the eye dropper tool to select my color. I then formatted my title,date/time/place, subtitle, logo, and body copy. I formed the body copy around his shoulder in order

to add ow. After making sure all of that was aligned as I wanted, and allowing sufcient white space,I added my line element. I used a diagonal line that matches the angle of my ‘e’ in order to createrepetition. Finally, I reopened my ier in Photoshop to blend my column and picture.

PhotodesignDate:

Description:This is a design based around a picture I took of my sister and then played with the concept of dreams.

Programs:InDesign

Objectives:

The message is somewhat abstract, but purposefully so. The idea of ‘dream awake’ is about visionaries. Thelines are a physical representation of the world that only she can see, not visible to anyone else. It’s meant tocommunicate the necessity to dream, and achieve.

Process:I took this picture at my friend’s farm against some pipes used to ow oxygen into potato sellers. I edited the

levels, vibrance, selective color and sharpness of the original image. After that I added a mask and selectedeverything surrounding my model (or my twin, take your pick of pronouns). I then desaturated the picture abit more. From there, I added a brick gradient that had a horizontal gradient as well as a color overlay thatcombined at an opacity of 84% to make that effect. Next, I made yet another make of my sisters eyes (fromthe original image) and set the opacity at 53%. At 100% her eyes looked quite demonic, but I liked maintaining

that focal interest as well as adding a teal element amongst the brick. After that I added my lines, which all

started as triangles. The teal ones were added rst, originating from her right eye. The brick triangles originatedfrom her left eye. I then edited out everything that interfered with her gure. Finally I added the text: First, thecolor palette and then the phrase ‘dream awake’. Dream awake is in a very geometric font and I paired thatwith a simple, lightweight sanserif font.
