Student of the Week

January 30th– February 3rd

One of the most challenging things we do as teachers is write recommendations for our 8th graders. We are asked to describe

the student using the first three words that come to mind when we think of the student. Distilling who you are in only three

words is difficult because you are multidimensional. There is your character, your gifts, your academics, your work ethic, your

contributions to the school community, what kind of a citizen you are as well as your maturity, leadership and relationship

with peers and faculty. Of course we have an opportunity to write an additional narrative to expound on these areas, but

finding three words is difficult.

Whenever I develop a write up for a Student of the Week, I try to use the three words approach to “jump start” the narra-

tive. Blest, engaged, unafraid: these are my three words for this individual.

Blest, because she has a caring family, who encourage and inspire her. She speaks of them in glowing terms. She also has a

close, supportive, circle of friends who are as good to her as she is to them. Clearly she is blest.

Engaged, because she is an active part of the St. Timothy Middle School community. She is a willing volunteer and a happy

face in the hallways. She is so very proud of her school and enjoys telling people that she attends St. Timothy’s.

Unafraid, because she has discovered the key to success inside and outside the classroom, is to tackle anything asked of her

with a can do spirit. I am always met with a winning smile and “of course!” whenever I ask her to attempt something outside

of her comfort zone.

The best part of this student’s story is that this is an evolution that has taken place over the past three years. My student of

the week has grown spiritually, academically, and socially since entering St.

Timothy’s Middle School in sixth grade. I am delighted to see the person she is

today.

It is with great pleasure that I present Chyanne Castle as my Student of the

Week.

Mrs. Anna Maria Battaglia—Pre-Algebra 7, Algebra 8 and 8th grade homeroom

teacher

Catholic Schools Week in L.A and History Monday in a combined Language Arts and History class our 8th graders had two very special guests. Attorney John DelBarba, Supervisory Assistant Public Defender, and Attorney James Turcotte, Supervisory Assistant State's Attor-ney, visited to discuss the latest novel the students have read in class. The novel is Monster by Walter Dean Myers and involves a young man on trial. Our students were able to act out the final courtroom scene with the real attorneys and then ask many questions about the law and the novel itself. We were honored to have them both take time out of their incredibly busy schedules to visit and educate our stu-dents! Mrs. Tyrrell and Mr. Driscoll

Catholic Schools Week in Gym Class

In both Mr. Martin and Mrs. Locke’s gym classes the students are having a fantastic time competing in fun games

like the Mine Field Game, Around the World and the Three Point Contest.

Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon

Thank you so much to the Home and School Association and especially, Chris Casciani, Wendy Miller, Susan Reboul, Meg Mur-

phy, Carolyn Hovorka, Lynn Wilkos, Cheryl Samele and Liliana Cuevas for hosting a beautiful lunch for all of us today! This is

such a special part of Catholic Schools week and are truly grateful!

STMS Families and Friends,

Saint Timothy Middle School’s one major annual fundraiser, the TIGER BALL, is coming up on Friday, March 24, 2017. It is im-

portant to note that the money generated by the Tiger Ball is used for the school’s operating budget, so the event has to be a

success. Therefore, we need each and every member of the STMS community to help.

So, how can you help?

buy tickets and attend the Tiger Ball

invite your extended family to buy tickets and attend

invite your friends and neighbors who do not have kids at STMS to attend the Tiger Ball and join in the fun

donate one or more auction items (ex: use of a vacation home, sports tickets, theater tickets, works of art, crafts, gift bas-

kets, coupons, a fun activity hosted by your family… and pretty much anything else you can think of)

bid generously on auction items

make a direct monetary donation

The auction is an extremely important part of the success of the Tiger Ball and the more auction items we have, the better. If

each family can commit to donating at least one auction item, we will be on our way to a successful event. You can contact me

with your auction donations at [email protected] or at 860-539-6908. Please include your name, your student’s name, and

a description of the item.

Sincerely,

Chris Casciani
