From the Principal’s Office: Welcome back to another great year of teaching, learning and endless opportunity at Amherst High School. My hope is that this summer has provided your family an occasion to enjoy the great outdoors, relax, and take a break from the school year routine. I trust you are well rested and ready for a year of many challenges and successes. To those of you who are new to our high school, I offer a special greeting and would like to share how eager we are to invite you into our learning community. Our learning community is based upon a strong bond between Amherst parents and the Amherst faculty and administration. We are all a team committed to excellence and welcome every interaction that promotes the maximum potential of your child’s education. We encourage two-way communications and ask parents to initiate regular contact with your child’s teachers and counselor. My office, which includes Mr. Crozier, Assistant Principal) and Mr. Murphy (Dean of Students) welcomes your inquiries at any time. Each year of high school brings its unique challenges both academically and socially. This year will bring additional rigor and expectations in the classroom. Nationwide, we are in the midst of a standards reform movement that is raising the bar academically for American public school children. In the coming weeks and years, you can expect more rigorous course content, assessments, projects, homework, attendance, and behavioral expectations. You can encourage your teen to tackle these challenges by noticing progress, keeping a positive attitude, modeling persistent behaviors, celebrating completion, offering supportive assistance, and helping them stay organized. Some other suggestions for a successful school year include:
• Read this “Back to School” edition of Tiger Tales containing important information for the school year. After you have read it thoroughly, it is a good idea to keep this edition in a safe place for future reference.
• Please familiarize yourselves with all school policies (Attendance, Final Assessment, Code of Conduct, Dress Code, etc.). These policies are printed in the Student Agendas, which will be delivered to students on the first day of school.
• Check out the High School calendar to plan ahead for school activities and breaks.
• Become familiar with the Amherst High School web page. This award winning site is jam packed with valuable information about every aspect of our operation. Be sure to check out our website on a regular basis for news and updates at: www.amherstschools.org .

Welcome to the High School! We’ve been waiting for you! 1. Always remember, you are in charge of

4. Stay focused this year! Stay on top of your work and do your very best. Despite rumors otherwise, 9th grade is the most important year. It helps shape your academic future. Put your best foot forward and work hard.
5. Get involved in extracurriculars (sports,
clubs, student activities).
6. Challenge yourself academically. Do not accept mediocrity.
7. Branch out and meet new people. (Make
new friends, but keep the old…)
8. Listen to morning announcements and read the Daily Bulletin – every day! (Hone those reading and listening skills and stay on top of what’s going on at the high school).

I hope this issue of Tiger Tales finds you well, rested and eagerly anticipating the start of school in September. While you’ve been enjoying your summer vacation, we have been very busy preparing for what promises to be another very successful school year here at Amherst High School. Most importantly, we are excited to welcome our newest Tigers on August 30th for our freshmen orientation program, Adventure 2016 . Incoming freshmen should have received information in the mail in early July. In case you missed it, that letter is attached on the next page. One of the highlights of this year’s orientation is a new class which will help support our 9th grade students with their understanding and knowledge of our school’s Google platform. Students will have the opportunity to log into their Gmail accounts, format Google docs and even create Google presentations to share with teachers and fellow students. The program will conclude with a pizza dinner and a freshman social. In addition, this summer has been very busy with over 40 students enrolled in our Summer Credit Recovery Program. The 23 day program runs Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will conclude on August 15th. The August Regents exams are scheduled for Thursday, August 16th, and Friday, August 17th. The August 2012 exam schedule is also included in this issue. Finally, I offer this advice to our students as they prepare for the 2012-13 academic school year:
1. Come to school every day. The biggest obstacle that hindered students in not being successful last school year was poor attendance. Having a good routine, eating a healthy breakfast and coming to school every day are the keys to a successful start here at Amherst.
2. Have a positive attitude. There are
many opportunities for students to get involved at our school. Your high school experience is what you make of it. If you come to school with a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, an open mind to try new things, and most importantly, get involved in a club, sport or extra curricular activity, I am confident that when you reflect back on your years at Amherst High School, you will be very pleased with your experience.
3. Establish a strong work ethic. In my
opinion one of the most important character traits that young adults need to develop in their high school years is a strong work ethic. To have academic success students have to work hard. Start this school year investing in your future by developing good study habits and working hard to meet your academic potential.

July 2, 2012 Dear Students and Parents of Incoming Freshman, On behalf of the administration, faculty, and staff, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Amherst Central High School. Additionally, we would like to extend an invitation and share information regarding the upcoming Adventure 2016 High School Transition Program. Adventure 2016 is an orientation/transition program designed for all ninth graders. The program is scheduled for August 30th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the High School. Adventure 2016 provides a unique occasion for us:
o to begin the important transition into high school o to communicate high school expectations o to listen to the needs and concerns of incoming students o to initiate the development of social and academic skills which will help our students to be successful
at Amherst o to encourage students and staff to get to know one another in a fun and dynamic environment
Students will be served breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our school nurse will be available for any medical needs. Students should wear comfortable clothing and sneakers. (For safety reasons, flip flops and sandals are not permitted). Our program will conclude with dinner from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. During the same time, the administration will be holding a Meet and Greet for parents from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in our high school Auditorium. This will be an excellent opportunity for parents to receive important high school information from our administrative and student services teams prior to the start of school on Wednesday, September 5th. We strongly recommend and encourage your child’s participation in this very important program. The pathfinders are excited to welcome into the high school the incoming freshmen class. Pathfinders are a leadership and role model organization made up of Junior and Seniors at the high school. Please look for letters this summer that the Pathfinders will write to all freshmen in order to welcome them. The freshmen will meet up with the Pathfinders at Adventure on August 30th. This is a great way to make new friends in the building. We look forward to meeting all of these new faces! Enjoy your summer.

Attendance Call In: Please remember to call your child in when he or she will be absent or late. The automated call back line number is 362-8249 and is open 24/7 for your convenience. A written excuse from a parent is required within 3 days of the absence. THE BERRYMAN LOT is ONE WAY in the morning. Please avoid creating a dangerous situation by trying to drop off your child at the Berryman door at the beginning of school. The Westmoreland lot is available for drop off and pick up.

If you’ve got great photos of school and community events or you and your friends just having fun, we’d like to see them. Our photographers can’t be everywhere. Best Wishes for a Successful Year! I am eager to begin working with all parents and students as a partner in your goals for a successful high school experience. Welcome to all returning and new students. As your Assistant Principal/Dean of Students, I am responsible for your safety as well as ensuring that Amherst High School is a positive learning environment at all times. As a part of a team which includes administration, teachers, parents and students, we must dedicate ourselves to:
• Being responsible and ready to learn • Being respectful of all staff, students,
and our school. • Being safe and healthy.
These three values should serve as a guideline in your decision making in high school and will be supported by the high school staff. All students are provided an Amherst Student Handbook and should familiarize themselves with the Student Management Policies. In order to be successful and avoid participation in a disciplinary consequence, the following important aspects of the student management program must be adhered to.
Be on time: for homeroom and classes. Detention will be assigned by the supervising teacher if you are late. Follow all requests of faculty and staff: Failure to follow a reasonable request is considered insubordination and will result in a suspension from school. Appropriate language and respect: Please use appropriate language and always be respectful of adults and peers. Passes: If you are in the hallway after a passing bell rings, be sure to have a pass. If you do not have a pass, you will be issued a detention. Cafeteria: Be sure to clean up after yourself in the cafeteria. In order for students to have the
privilege of going outdoors during lunch time, the cafeteria must be cleaned daily and all food must remain in the cafeteria. Food is not allowed outside of the cafeteria. Fighting/Bullying/Horseplay/Disorderly conduct: Fighting is unacceptable and disciplinary consequences for fighting will be severe. In addition, bullying, horseplay, and/or disorderly conduct will not be tolerated. Please respect one anothers personal space and the right to learn in a non-intimidating environment. If you have a conflict with another student,t you must involve adult staff to help you resolve the matter without a physical altercation. Please involve Mr. Murphy or any staff member at the first indication of any potential conflict. Electronic devices: Electronic devices may only be used in the cafeteria, otherwise they will be confiscated. No cell phones: No exceptions . Pay phones are available for student use. If you must call home, please come to the Dean of Students Office. Dress code: As students prepare for college and the work force, they are expected to abide by a dress code and dress appropriately. By doing so, a better learning environment is maintained throughout the building and the educational process will not be disrupted.
*JUNIOR/SENIOR PRIVILEGE *
Junior/Senior Privileges allow students the freedom to use available facilities for worthwhile purposes during unassigned time. These purposes may include: pursuit of academic assignments in Library, Computer Center, 2nd floor silent study area, front courtyard, center court yard and cafeteria. Junior/Senior Privileges for an academic year may be granted at the start of the marking period or revoked at any time. It is the student’s responsibility to submit a completed application and waiver for approval to the Dean of Students. Junior/Senior Privileges may not be granted or will be revoked under, but not limited to, the following circumstances: A) Junior/Senior Privilege at Amherst High
School is an option for qualified 11 th & 12 th grade students. These students must maintain a minimum grade of “C” in each course in order to continue Junior/Senior Privilege once it has been granted. Prior parental approval must be given before students can participate in the program. Those students who do not qualify will be assigned to a study hall.
B) Juniors/Seniors in violation of school rules as identified in the student management plan will be subject to loss of privileges for a minimum of 10 weeks.
C) Junior/Seniors who fail to submit completed required school forms. These are, but not limited to: Student Health Emergency Data Form, Rules For All Students and Policy on Student Use of Computerized Information Resources.
D) Juniors/Seniors who have not made restitution for their books, lab keys, elevator keys from previous year.
Note: ● Junior/Senior Privileges are not a hall
pass. All students must have a pass to be in the halls.
*** ● Students cannot leave campus, go to parking lots, playing fields or any other non-supervised area ***
● Seniors only may apply for early release or late arrival on the back of this form.
● Students who lose Junior/Senior Privileges will be expected to be in school from 8:20 AM to 3:22 PM unless granted an exemption by the Dean of Students. Privileges may be revoked by the parent or guardian at any time.
● If Junior/Senior Privilege is revoked, I must reapply for the next quarter.
RED CROSS CLUB NEWS: This year the Amherst Red Cross Club: . Raised $9332.05 for Roswell Park with our Bald for Bucks event held May 31st. Students and Teachers participated by either donating 10 inches of hair or shaving their heads bald and finding sponsors. This is our largest total yet! . Donated enough blood at our blood drives to potentially save the lives of 300 people. -Since 2006 the club has donated over $18,000.00 to Roswell Park.

Colleges will look at all four years when evaluating a student. Do the best you can in your classes, and strive to become well rounded by participating in activities both in and outside of school! CAREER EXPLORATION The Career Center is located in the Student Services Office. Students have many options for exploring college and career opportunities through the use of traditional reference books and files to interactive software. Our computer program, Choices, offers many activities to help students explore colleges and careers. Some of the functions include: college searches, scholarship finder, school comparisons, interest inventories, work values, and basic skills survey. Please be sure to frequently check the Student Services link on the Amherstschools.org web page for college, career and scheduling information.

PARENTS OF JUNIORS The ASVAB will be offered to all Juniors on Tuesday, October 16 th, at 8:15 a.m . The counselors believe the results will assist our students in linking up into potential broad occupational areas and help them in their process of career exploration. There is no cost to the students. ASVAB Career Exploration Program
• Discover your interests, abilities and preferences.
• Match your interests, abilities and preferences with occupations.
• Learn where and how to get information on different careers.
Key Features: Exploring Careers: The ASVAB Workbook is a hands-on book with an interest inventory and an exercise to help you learn about occupations and how you match up to them. Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) -- An aptitude test Military Careers Information about military and civilian careers. Should I take the ASVAB even if I plan to go to college? Absolutely! The ASVAB Career Exploration Program can help you make decisions about all aspects of career preparation, including education and training. What if I’m not interested in the military?
Taking the ASVAB does not obligate you to the military in any way. We will not be releasing scores to the military. How long does the ASVAB Career Exploration Program take? Will I miss class? ASVAB testing takes about 3 hours. You will miss class periods 1-5 and eat lunch 6th period. When the scores come back, you’ll be shown how to interpret them and how to use them to make a plan for your future. How can I prepare for the ASVAB?
No one “passes” or “fails” the ASVAB. The ASVAB allows you to compare your scores to those of other students at your grade level. Your scores will NOT affect your school grades.
How does it work?
• Take the ASVAB. • Complete the workbook exercises. • Match your interests, abilities and preferences
with over 200 military and civilian careers.
What is an aptitude?
A developed capacity that indicates your readiness to become proficient in a specific activity, given the opportunity.
PSAT FOR JUNIORS The PSAT will be given on Saturday, October 20 th from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m . Registration will begin in late September/early October. PSAT Preliminary SAT NMSQT National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test The PSAT/NMSQT measures:
-Critical reading (questions based on reading passages). -Verbal reasoning (sentence completions, analogies). -Math problem solving. -Writing skills (improving sentences and paragraphs.
WHY TAKE THE PSAT/NMSQT?
SIX GOOD REASONS
(Taken from the College Board)
1. To open the door to college … The PSAT/NMSQT may be a student’s first official step on the road to college. It can prompt some to consider college as an option and others (who already know they’re going) to jump-start their search.
2. To practice for the SAT… On average, those who take the PSAT/NMSQT earn higher scores on the SAT than those who don’t. One reason: The tests have the same formats, directions, sample questions, and question types.
3. To earn scholarships and academic recognition… By taking the test, juniors may be eligible to enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s scholarship competitions, as well as programs that give special recognition to high-achieving Hispanic and African American students.
4. To begin the college search… The Student Search Service gives PSAT/NMSQT test-takers the option to voluntarily place their names in a pool of college-bound students interested in receiving admission and financial aid information from certified colleges, universities and scholarship agencies.
5. To see how one’s academic skills compare with those of college-bound students across the country… PSAT/NMSQT test results will give most students their first chance to see how their skills compare with those of others planning to go to college.
6. To get feedback on how to improve academic skills needed in college… The PSAT/NMSQT Score Report Plus clearly identifies academic skills that could use some work. VALUABLE COLLEGE INFORMATION:
• Recommended filing date (to your counselor) for SUNY (State) colleges and universities is November 1.
• College Application Deadlines :
Regular Decision Usually beginning January 1st through March 1st. Rolling Admission Application can be submitted throughout the year, but the earlier the better in terms of scholarship opportunities and program availability. Early Decision Deadlines typically begin November 1st and gives the student an admission decision—which is binding -- by December. Early Action Same as Early Decision, but it is not binding.
• SUNY EARLY DECISION: Deadline
November 1 to APC Center in Albany. Your counselor needs the application at least 2 weeks prior in order to be sent to the APC by Nov. 1 st.
• Keep a close watch on college
application deadline dates. Your counselor needs at least 2 weeks to process your application. * If you apply on-line, please print a copy of the application and give it to your counselor so they can attach the necessary transcript.
DIPLOMAS In accordance with the State Education Department, the following is a list of diploma types for students in New York: Regents Diploma : In order to earn a Regents Diploma, students must take and pass 5 Regents exams, with a passing score of at least 65 on each of the following exams:
1. Science (Earth Science, Living Environment, Chemistry, or Physics)
2. Math (Algebra, Geometry or Algebra II/Trigonometry.
3. Global History and Geography 4. U.S. History 5. Comprehensive English
Regents Diploma with Honors : In order to earn a Regents Diploma with Honors, students must score an average of 90% on the above exams. Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation : In order to earn a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation, students must take and pass four additional Regents exams, with a passing score of at least 65 on each of the following exams:
1. Science 2. 2 Math 3. Language Other Than English (Spanish,
French, Latin, etc) Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors : In order to earn a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors, students must earn an average of 90% on all 8 Regents exams. Students also have the option to complete a 5-unit sequence in Art, Music or Career and Technology education in place of the LOTE exam. Regents Exams are offered each year in January, June and August.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Each year the Student Services Office receives scholarship information from numerous local, national, and college sources which we advertise in the Daily Bulletin and on the Amherst website: www.amherstschools.org. While some scholarships only pertain to students with specific accomplishments or interests, others, such as essay contests, are open to all. Too often the student response to these announcements is very low. Please remind your son or daughter to read the Daily Bulletin, attend homeroom, and seek out this information in the Student Services Office or on the Amherst High School website. Scholarship and Financial Aid : Parents and students often receive letters from businesses, which guarantee their ability to find scholarships or sources of financial aid, plus a money back guarantee if they are unsuccessful. The Student Services Office does not endorse any of these services or any offer requiring students to pay money to get money.
SENIOR YEAR GRADES COUNT!!! Colleges have reported to the counselors that this past year they saw an unusually high number of applicants whose grades declined in their senior year.

1. Where to Obtain College Applications
A. Applications for schools in the SUNY system (State University of New
York) can be accessed at www.SUNY.edu and are available in the Student Services Office. Most SUNY colleges require a supplemental application that can also be completed online or downloaded from their website.
B. The Common Application – utilized by nearly 300 schools, is available at www.commonapp.org or in the Student Services office.
C. Applications for colleges not found on the Common Application may be obtained through the individual schools’ websites.
2. When to Apply
Applications should be sent as early as possible in your senior year. As a general rule, it is a good idea to have your applic ations in by THANKSGIVING.
3. How to Apply The majority of college applications are done online at the above websites. Students should meet with their School Counselor as soon as possible, but no later than two weeks before the application deadline, to arrange for transcripts, forms, and other records to be sent.
4. Recommendations Most schools require recommendations from your School Counselor and teachers. Please contact 2 to 3 teachers, several weeks prior to submitting your application, and ask them to give their letters to your School Counselor.
5. Supplemental Data Some colleges request students to write an essay describing themselves, their values, interests, goals and why they wish to attend a particular college. This essay is a very important part of your application. You should make certain that the essay is perfect. Use the essay as an opportunity to express individuality.
6. Application Fee Most colleges charge a non-refundable application fee that usually ranges from $25.00 to $75.00. ** Note: Some applications completed online will waive or reduce the application fee.
7. Financial Aid
To be eligible for any financial aid you must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This form is most readily available online at www.FAFSA.ed.gov. August Dear Parent or Guardian, New York State requires the use of a graphing calculator for all students who are enrolled
in Algebra, Geometry and Algebra 2/Trig. A graphing calculator is also an integral part
of all levels of Precalculus and Calculus. We recommend students who are planning to
take these courses to purchase a TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus calculator; the Silver Edition is
optional. If your family already owns a graphing calculator, please check with your math
teacher to see if it is adequate before purchasing a new one.
We hope that this advance notice will give you the opportunity to purchase a calculator
over the summer during the “back to school” sales. We ask that you keep the rewards
program points seal and turn it into your math teacher in September. The school can use
them as premiums towards future purchases.

Dear Amherst Families:
The school year is back and the PTSA has been working hard to gear up for a successful 2012/2013. As
we look towards the school year, we invite you to join your Amherst MS/HS PTSA. We welcome any
parents, guardians, teachers, staff and students to become active in PTSA activities. The PTSA handles
fundraising efforts to support school programs, field trips, scholarships and community events.
To become a member, please fill out the membership form that you can find on our website. Questions
on membership can be directed to the Membership Chair, Shanon Jacobs at [email protected].
There are also opportunities to volunteer for upcoming events. You will also find this form on our
website. We really appreciate all of the parents willing to help us out by volunteering their time and
efforts.
We will be kicking off the school year with an Entertainment Book fundraiser. This fundraiser begins
9/12 and ends 9/26. This is an easy product to sell and makes a great gift for the holidays.
We are also excited to be offering locker organizers called LockerWorks to purchase through the PTSA.
The cost will be $25 and comes in a variety of colors. We will be selling a limited quantity at the 6th
grade orientation on August 30 and will also have order forms available. You can also find an order form
on our website.
Our first PTSA meeting will be Wednesday, September 12, from 7:00p-8:15p held in the District Offices.
You can find the remaining dates on the district calendar.
