President’s Message

The Cadillac Club did a great job

with the BOPC. Hope everyone that attended had a great time. Don’t forget it will be our turn to

host the BOPC in 2016.

Although we didn’t have the Host responsibility, Club members were busy. Mike Walling brought the SEGTOA tent and set it up for us. SEGTOA helped with parking cars, class assignments and did Club work. Membership signed up 3 new members, Merchandise sold SEGTOA club merchandise, and we sold parts in the vendor space that members had donated. So everyone was busy either doing Club work or BOPC

work or both.

Thanks to members who donated parts to sell at the Swap Meet (Stephen Elliott, Ed Bellair, Denny Sanford, Jim Racela). We were able to raise $398.00 for the club. I also need thank new member John Hitt for his salesmanship in my absence and Kim Fowler’s friend for spelling me and driving my truck back home for me. We made lots of

buyers really happy, gained some

garage space, and made money

for the Club!! A great day !!

The winner of the Best “Work-in-

Progress” Pontiac at the BOPC has been chosen and the award will be given at the

August Meeting / Picnic.

The trip to Cullman, AL in May was fun. Hope everyone has made plans for the June meeting, Show, Cruise- in at Pigeon Forge. We also have the GOAA Convention coming up July 1-4 in Pittsburgh, PA. Stay tuned for additional info on our group

caravan, hotels, etc.

INDEPENDENCE FUND

One of the things we were unable to do during the BOPC was collect for the Independence Fund (tracked wheelchairs for disabled vets). We had discussed the drive at prior meetings and agreed we would participate with other GTO Clubs to purchase a wheelchair. Our goal is $400.00. We had good intentions but with everything going on at the BOPC, the collection got lost in the

shuffle.

I would like to meet our goal by collecting for the Fund at the June meeting and the August meeting / picnic or do an additional donation this year, perhaps after the August picnic. We can vote on the donation at the August meeting if the Board

agrees.

Pontiacs in Pigeon Forge

June 7-8, 2014

Our next Club Event is the 13

th Annual Pontiacs in

Pigeon Forge which is on June 7th and 8

th. It is a

two day event. It will be held on the grounds of the Music Road Hotel.

The car show on Saturday the 7th will be from 10

AM to 5 PM. At 7 PM, they are having a Cruise for all to participate in through the mountains. Sunday the 8

th at 10 AM is the

Awards Presentation. We would leave shortly after the awards ceremony to head back home.

For those attending, and convoying up to Pigeon Forge, we would meet on Saturday June 7

th at 7

AM at the Chevron Gas Station. I-75 to exit 271 is Busbee Parkway in Kennesaw. Get off going east and the first light is Busbee Parkway. The Chevron is at the corner on the NE side. Address is 3400 Busbee Drive, Kennesaw GA 30144. From there we would proceed north on I-75 to arrive prior to lunch at the show.

Once parked and set up at the show, everyone can check into the hotel which they claim is a mini-vacation unto itself. Conveniences at your fingertips include a 60 foot water slide, a lazy river in a mini water park, a heated outdoor pool, a heated indoor pool, a whirlpool, an exercise room, and an arcade. Any family members your bring will have plenty to do while you're at the show. For more information and reservations, visit the hotel website at http://www.musicroadhotel.com. 855-875-9100. If this hotel is booked, there are plenty of other hotels right there to choose from. If you need help securing a room, let me know.

When we return on Sunday, we would return south through the Great Smokey Mountains and down Hwy 321 to Hwy 71/441 to Hwy 23/985 to I-85, a more scenic route.

I’d like to get 10 cars to attend. As of this email, we have 2. So get out your calendars, make a reservation, and let me know if you will be meeting us in Pigeon Forge or convoying up with us from Kennesaw.

Tech tips Water Pump Mod

Submitted by John Link via Internet

Source: Wallace Racing

This is an idea suggested by George Kujanski on the Performance Years Board in a thread started by PMDRACER.

This basically applies to the newer 11 bolt water pump. The older water pump is designed differently and may not apply. Thread Link

If you are having problems with overheating and have tried just about everything, you might want to try this.

George Kujanski wrote: I've got a few words on that subject: I don't have a stamped impeller, but I do know that pump efficiency is directly related to the clearance between the divider plate and the vanes. If your clearance, (regardless of cast or stamped) is more than say, .060", YOU ARE THROWING AWAY COOLING EFFICIENCY. I tweaked mine from about .250" down to about .100" and it made a drastic change in my engine temps with no other changes.

You can spend money on big radiators, electric fans, magic cooling fluid, yadda, yadda, but if you are running a large clearance all the other stuff is a band aid. Do the clearnace thing first, then go from there. Cost is a few bucks for a gasket. Not only that, hot start problems went away too...a possible side benefit.

11 bolt water pump.

NAPA pump part #: DPW1301280

2. New Sleeve assembly.

Can still be ordered through GM Part #9796347

3. Spacer plate clearence mod

Try to get the clearence as close as possible. .025" or under

I took the pump and put it upside down on the bench

(obviously you have to take the pump off) put the gasket on it then the divider plate.

Measure the clearance between the pump side surface of the plate and the edge of the vanes. This should be made as close as possible. I used a hammer to carefully bend the circumference of the hole of the divider plate towards the vanes. The suction of the pump is thru the center hole, and the pressure side is around the tips of the vanes. Too much of a gap between the plate and the vanes and the pump tends to draw coolant from the pressure side instead of from the center hole (which is plumbed to the radiator and the hot side of the block).

That's why minimizing this leakage path improves flow thru the engine and thru the radiator (when the thermostat is open).

2014 Carmel, IN ARTMOBILIA—Saturday, August 23rd

SEGTOA has been invited to the 8th Annual Carmel Automobilia where the 50th Anniversary of the

GTO will be celebrated with a special class for all GTOs. For those looking for an end of summer

road trip see the information below.

The 8th annual 2014 Carmel Artomobilia is scheduled on Saturday, August 23rd from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The show will once again be held in the historic Arts and Design District in Carmel (Indianapolis), Indiana, which provides a great venue to host the event. The goal of Artomobilia is to showcase classic and performance cars, attract local and regional automotive-related businesses and artists, and to provide a fun day for the car show participants, event volunteers, and families. The cars that participate in the Carmel Artomobilia range from Ford Model A’s to Ferraris, American and European classic and sports cars (1925 to current), Indiana Built Classics (1925 – 1948), super cars, race cars, and muscle cars. Each year’s event attracts different, unique, and historically significant automobiles to help make Artomobilia one of Indiana’s premier car

shows!

The Pontiac GTO will be featured in a special class this year to celebrate GTO’s 50th anniversary. Our goal for this class is to have cars representing all generations of the GTO from 1964 – 1974, and 2004 - 2006. We could use your club’s help to find GTOs from this period

(restored or in well-maintained original condition).

You can visit the website links below for further details and information. Please email me back or

call me on my cell phone if you have any questions.

I hope to see the Southeastern GTO Association at the 2014 Carmel Artomobilia!

Best Regards,

David Renshaw

CARS IN THE MOVIES

Interested in having your car used in movie making?

You can place your car in a registry at

“movietimecars.com”. Some sites want you to pay for a

listing but this site is free. Show your vehicle at no

charge and maybe make a few dollars.

You could become famous, like Ed Bellair !!! His car was

used in a film recently as was

a car owned by a Dixie Buick Club member.

GTO Parts & Services Sources Thank You to Jeremiah Riggio, Bob Mohalley, and Jim Racela for tracking down some useful on-line sources for GTO parts and services. Hopefully these will prove useful to you in keeping your GTO looking like a proper time machine!
