Challenging Forms & Conventions Of Real Media Products

• Our video is like a low budget promo video which brings it back to its roots of beat rock music which didn’t incorporate big music visuals in their videos.

• Our music video has challenged forms and conventions of real media products by not showing the band playing live music typical to beat rock videos such as the Small faces and the Kinks.

• Instead we show the band in everyday life for example relaxing and drinking tea, showing British ‘Lazy Sundays’ which the audience can relate to, making sure the band don’t act like superstars.

• We have also challenged real media products with comedic effect in our video. There are not many music videos that use comedic effect and wit, which makes our video different from others.

• We have used the style of the artists to represent a sub culture, being a mix of mod fashion and rock fashion. We used this by dressing the artists in Parka jackets, Harrington Jackets, and the adidas originals shoes as well as bucket hats. This helps represent the people who wear this style because people base their fashion on artists. Also music videos in this genre usually dress in a fashion to make audiences relate to them.

You can see how we have used this shot on the top from the ‘Parklife’ Blur video and it has influenced us with Callum our main singer using similar facial expressions and wearing track tops. We have also used a close up shot of Callum singing which is similar to the shot in the Parklife screen grab, we used this shot so the audience feel close and involved with the lead singer.

We also took inspiration from the ‘Dreaming of You’ music video by The Coral.

You can see from the screen grab that we dressed Max up to add humour to the music video as we dressed Max up in a stereotypical OAP.

We didn’t necessarily have to dress him up as a soldier but we were taking ideas of dressing up to make the video humorous.

Effectiveness of main product and ancillary texts

• We produced a Myspace page, which promotes the band as a real band. Also it can bring in audiences, as people can listen to the music and see what the band write and upcoming shows.

• On the Myspace page we used the band photo as the profile picture that is on our digipak. This was to promote the image which is on the digipak. We made the Myspace page simple with just a grey background so that people looking at it would be drawn towards the profile picture which is our main selling point as it is on the digipak and it promotes the bands face.

• On our digipak we used the photo of the band because it sells the band as not a superstar band but they look normal and close to reality such as bands like The Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys which has brought their success.

• The costume was important and for the digipak and myspace photo we made them wear the clothes that they wore in the video as it promotes the video.

• We signed the band to a record company called Circus Records, a small time budget

This photo was the photo used for the profile picture on Myspace and also for the digipak. It captures Callum, in the middle in a different pose to the others, as the lead singer well and also shows the band and it is realistic.

Audience Feedback: What we have learnt

• We found out from questionnaires that we handed out to 20 different people who listen to the beat rock genre.

• We found that many liked comedy in music videos and wit because it entertains them and keeps them interested. Also if we did short shots it would make them more interested to watch it again in case they missed something. We put short clips when the Artists are lying on the sofa and we used quick edits to jump the next shot of them on the sofa to make it seem like they had been lazing around all day so the audience could relate to it.

• We also asked if the audience if they followed bands fashion trends and they all said that they can relate by wearing similar fashions to there favourite artists. This is why it was so important to show fashions of our artists and we have done this effectively.

• We asked for suggestions on what keeps you interested in rock music videos and they said they like comedic, quick paced videos that use the video to convey the lyrics.

• Another question was how important is a music video in helping create revenue and sales and many of the people who did the questionnaire said they thought it was important because it shows fashions and what the band look like to help them know if they will like the band.

Page 8: Tim And Ryan

On the right there are band photos of the Kaiser Chiefs and The Libertines who bring their Indie fashions similar to our band. We have taken inspiration but also you can see what typical fans of this genre of music like to wear and take influence from their favourite bands.

We took a lot of influence from this video on the left which is the Blur ‘Sunday Sunday’ video as we think our lead singer Callum, resembles Damon Albarn, who is a lively character and we got this from Callum. On the left you can see him dancing in a comedic way and we got Callum to do this in the first shot and it paid off well.

In the shot to the left we also used a shot similar with Callum reading the newspaper and it bring the typical stereotypical British Sunday which is what the Blur video is about and our video.

• Through the second questionnaire we have also found out that a lot of people who listen to our music genre who we handed our questionnaires to were downloading music off the internet and using streaming music websites. This shows that websites such as Myspace and Youtube are bringing success to bands like ours.

• The Internet is obviously a massive tool and we have used Myspace to bring in an audience who are digitally native which is who the band is reaching out for. The Arctic Monkeys became successful because of the Internet and without it they might never have been seen by the core audience they were looking for.

• Music streaming companies such as Deezer who make their money from advertising would be interested in our band and they make deals with record companies, even small independent labels.

• NME could also be a great tool in trying to get the band out to the public because of its drive to promote unsigned bands and on their website their a section for new music and unsigned bands which larger music labels and rock fans will look at.

Ways we used media technologies in the construction, research, planning

and evaluation stages.• We used a camcorder and tripod to film all of our filming. It was good because it

was lightweight and compact so that we could film almost anywhere. Also for the toilet shot this was important because we could fit in a very small room. With a larger camera this would not be possible.

• Camcorders are also effective because they are not so dominant and actors find it easier to be filmed in front of them and aren’t camera shy. The tripod was great because it was also compact and easy to bring around and good for a range of different shots. We used it in some shots like a monopod making best use out of it and making effective shots.

• We used imovie on the apple Macs to edit the shots we had filmed. It is a great program because its easy to use and can give a professional finish. We made best use out of it with video effects such as mirrored shots and a still then fade out to look professional.

• We used YouTube and other internet sources to look at different music videos in our genre. This was important at getting an idea of how different production teams and editing teams produce videos and we watched Blur ‘Sunday Sunday’and Blur ‘Parklife’. These are important because they were a band much influenced by The Small Faces.

• Another piece of technology we used was a digital still camera for taking photos of the band and for finding suitable locations for the video. This was very helpful as it gave us ideas for locations and we could take these back to the class and decide what we thought was the best places.

• Also there was a time where one of us would have the Digital Camera and we would take photos for ideas and could bring them back to the classroom to decide on them.

• Also for taking photos of the band it let us make a professional standard band photo. • Another way of using the internet was to look at different Institutions that would

realistically sell our band as a real band. We found a range of different labels such as EMI which was a great label because it is so big and has so much history behind it but also there were smaller labels such as Domino Records which is great at taking smaller indie bands and turning them into something special.

• Domino Records is a Record Company that has signed bands who are small but have become succesful such as Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand. They have also been internet phenomena's which has led to that success.

• We have used NME as a website to help us look into New Music a page set up so anyone can look at unsigned bands and new music which is interesting in helping understand what bands have to do to get signed and the importance of music videos.

• We used an iPod touch because it has a speaker to play music out loud. This meant we could get the artist to sing in sync, so editing at a later date becomes easier.
