DID YOU KNOW? • The controversial Manly 2015 project is still on Council’s agenda. Council proposes to demolish the Whistler Street carpark (385 spaces) to construct an $40 million, two level carpark under historic Manly Oval. • Proposed major infrastructure projects as part of the 2015 Plan and $16 million redevelopment of Boy Charlton Pool will plunge the Council $100 million into debt by 2014/15*, and take decades of higher rates to repay. • Council has received two critical reports from the NSW Ombudsman highlighting operating deficiencies in governance, finance, workforce relations and complaints handling. • The Mayor and General Manager have sought approval for a $15 million loan to rebuild Manly Boy Charlton Swim Centre WITHOUT community or Councillor consultation or knowledge. *Reference: Draft Long Term Financial Plan 2012 Tabled June 2012 REVITALISING OUR VILLAGE! See page 3. EXTENSIVE RESEARCH - WHAT LOCALS WANT During the months of March – May 2012 Independent research company Benchmark Research headed by Mark de Teliga, undertook an extensive survey on behalf of Good for Manly. 785 people responded on-line and a number of focus groups were undertaken. Here are some of the highlights: 88% of residents and ratepayers said they wanted more transparency and disclosure from Council. 76% of local residents said they believed that Council should be focusing more on residents’ needs than at present. 73% said Council needs to do more to develop and preserve the “village atmosphere” of Manly than at present. 61% said they knew nothing about the two recent Ombudsman’s reports and 15% said they knew very little about them. The current Council’s 2015 Plan, at its core, proposes the demolition of the Whistler Street Carpark and possibly the library, and building a multi-storey carpark under Manly Oval. This action in one stroke will cost ratepayers in excess of $60 million, will destroy the iconic oval and remove parking to a distant underground and undesirable location.

In ConTrasT Good for Manly's alternative plan developed by former local resident Sam George, who is a Snr Urban Design Planner with Roberts Day, aims to upgrade the Whistler St plaza area as well as the adjoining land so that it is a functional village centre and a new heart for Manly.

This area can be transformed without major building construction or demolishing any existing council assets.

The old carpark could be transformed with a green wall of vegetation, an outdoor community cinema screen, new paving, seating and landscaping, all adding to the local village character.

Parking continues to be a nightmare in Manly and the costs just keep going up.‘‘

‘‘

A personal note from Candy BinghamFor the past three years I have attended Manly Council meetings. As I watched and listened I became increasingly more concerned that Mayor Jean Hay and her Liberal majority are taking us down a path of massive, unsustainable and totally unnecessary ‘white elephant’ infrastructure projects. If elected as Mayor it is my intention to change the way Council operates by making decisions more transparent and accountable. My vision is of an affordable long-term future of our Village and suburbs, and not just an extravagant short-term plan for 2015.My two years as Chair of Little Manly Precinct (arguably

Council’s most active precinct), and my serving on Manly Council’s Traffic Committee (as the representative for our Local Member), also provided insights into the inner workings of Manly Council, and its current officious practices.I am proud of being a third generation “Manlyite”. My family opened James Brothers butcher shops here in 1928, and my father Bill and his brother Gordon later managed these shops for many years. With my own extensive experience in business and

government projects, my 3 year term as Lady Mayoress of Sydney, and my long ties to Manly and its community, I believe I am well placed to take on the role of Mayor. If you believe it’s time for a change please make your vote

count and support our new vision for Manly.
