Lillian Sterling A Look into Double Consciousness in Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man This project uses W.E.B. DuBois' theory of double consciousness as a lens through which to view the narrator's journey from a hopeful African-American man to the Invisible Man who hibernates under the New York City streets after being exploited until all power he once felt has been taken from him. By examining the electrical motif that runs through the novel, I assert that the moments where electricity is involved, either applied to the narrator or others, reflects the revelations that lead to him discovering that the veil is inescapable while participating in white American society.
