TIME PROBLEM
PLANNING SPACES
AMEESHI GOENKA
PDP 301
DESIGN BRIEF I recommended my client, who is in the construction business, to create an office space on the first floor of a three storey building at Yelahanka New Town, Bangalore, primarily because it is a fast developing urban settlement. The location and its developments complement the business and will boost the clientèle list of the firm. As many new high rises and condominiums are being constructed there, and several more to come up, it is suitable to have an architectural designing and execution firm in that locality. An office is a space that is meant to be welcoming to its employees and managers every day. It should not be a space where they come, work, have lunch, work and leave. Interaction with the space and its people keeps the mood light and free from stress.
Since this site will be an office for a building construction firm, the first floor vendors and clients will be visiting frequently. Though open space and transparency of the office work is exhibited, the vendors and clients are not allowed in particular areas. Keeping the vendors and clients away from the day to day office work is important to avoid interruptions and disturbances. The open spaces, low partition height and glass partitions allow free conversations in the environment and keeps everybody engaged with their projects as well. In this site, I have adhered to the client’s every requirement from a daily user’s point of view, keeping in mind their freedom of space, their comfort and the function they are expected to carry out. The office is designed in such a way so as to derive maximum utility of the space provided, maximum utility of natural light and air and taking care of the interior aesthetics. The cabins, discussion rooms and conference rooms have glass partitions, are very spacious. The cabins follow the open door policy. The interior materials used like gypsum partitions, corian or ply table tops, anti slip vitrified flooring and more will be very light, easy to install and replace, low maintenance and very durable. They give the space an aesthetic appeal as well as carry out all the functions.
PERSONAS
• Sheela is a thirty year old woman who is a project manager at the firm. She stays far away from Yelahanka and travels by car. She is one month pregnant.
For her comfort I have provided comfortable seating, washroom on the way to the cabin to freshen up, an AC in the cabin, interior plants and glass partitions for her to keep an eye on her subordinates work without having to move around much.
• Raj is a fifty year old who is on a wheelchair for the last two years. He is a regular employee and gets claustrophobic easily.
For Raj’s comfort the office has enough windows for fresh air and the office is handicapped friendly. A toilet for disabled people will be provided and the corridors are wide enough to move around on a wheelchair.
