Essential Questions

1. How much time is being expended in the service of teacher evaluation and support?

2. How does that investment compare to all other work being done by a building principal?

3. What is the nature of the time being invested – how much of it has value to teaching and learning?

4. What insights can we gain from the data to learn how to improve our use of time within this system?

OriginsConway Quality – Systems

Orientation

Value Added – Necessary – ReWork (Waste)

The issue is not whether or not we can find more time, it

is how much value can we get out of the time we already

have.

Understanding how time is used and the systems that

drive it is the key to increasing our productive use

of it.

How Do We Increase Value?

1. Defining what has value (the goal) for our organizations and ourselves.

2. Exploring the nature of value added work, necessary work and waste.

3. Collecting and analyzing data.

4. Acting on the results by focusing resources on work systems that create value and reducing, or eliminating, work that does not.

Three Kinds of WorkValue Added - work moves you measurably and directly toward your

goal (improved student learning). In industry this is simply defined as work that “the customer is willing to pay you for.”

Necessary - work consists of tasks which must be performed to keep the school running, but have no inherent value because there is no direct impact on the goal.

Re-Work - rework is anything - even if connected to learning - that is occurring or re-occurring because of a failure of a previous attempt or effort. This is a form of waste because this work could have been avoided if other work was done properly in the first place.

How Do WeCollect the Data?1.Random sampling to

ensure accurate tracking. 3,4,5 open.

2.Anytime you are in your role as a principal, the sampler should be turned on, time notated, and samples tracked.

3.As the sample sheet fills up, total the samples and send them to me.

4.When we hit 800 samples, you will have an accurate profile.

AlwaysRemember…When the sampler goes off, its not the name of thing that you are doing that is important, it is the substance of what you are doing regardless of the type of action in general.

Let’s Talk VQ There is more to this than

just crunching some numbers to increase the amount of time you spend focusing on student learning.

Our Research has clearly shown that there is a direct correlation between your Value Quotient (the ratio between perceived value added and waste involved in your work) and your sense of worth, happiness, productivity, and, ultimately, your value to your organization.

What Savings Will You Discover?Even if you uncover

an issue that only creates a 2% improvement in your use time, that still adds up to over 40 hours a year of time created to do something important for student learning.

How many good things could you do with an extra week of time?
