Will  Eisner  Eisner  was  recognized  interna0onally  as  one  of  the  giants  in  the  field  of  sequen0al  art,  a  term  he  coined.  In  a  career  that  spanned  nearly  seventy  years  and  eight  decades  —  from  the  dawn  of  the  comic  book  to  the  advent  of  digital  comics  —  he  truly  was  the  'father  of  the  Graphic  Novel'.    He  broke  new  ground  in  the  development  of  visual  narraDve  and  the  language  of  comics  and  was  the  creator  of  The  Spirit,  John  Law,  Lady  Luck,  Mr.  MysDc,  Uncle  Sam,  Blackhawk,  Sheena  and  countless  others.

Tim  Burton  Burton  became  known  for  creaDng  visually  striking  films  that  blend  themes  of  fantasy  and  horror,  including  Beetlejuice,  Edward  Scissorhands,  Batman,  and  The  Nightmare  Before  Christmas.

William  Kentridge  Having  witnessed  first-­‐hand  one  of  the  twenDeth  century’s  most  contenDous  struggles—the  dissoluDon  of  apartheid—Kentridge  brings  the  ambiguity  and  subtlety  of  personal  experience  to  public  subjects  that  are  most  oRen  framed  in  narrowly  defined  terms.  Using  film,  drawing,  sculpture,  animaDon,  and  performance,  he  transmutes  sobering  poliDcal  events  into  powerful  poeDc  allegories.

Tabaimo  Using  drawings  and  coloraDon  that  evoke  the  hand-­‐made  nature  of  tradiDonal  Japanese  woodblock  prints  (Ukiyo-­‐e)  and  combining  them  with  sophisDcated  computer  technology,  Tabaimo’s  animated  installaDons  offer  a  surreal,  complex  and  someDmes  disturbing  vision  of  contemporary  Japanese  society.

Robin  Rhode  Coming  of  age  in  a  newly  post-­‐apartheid  South  Africa,  Rhode  was  exposed  to  new  forms  of  creaDve  expression  moDvated  by  the  spirit  of  the  individual  rather  than  dictated  by  a  poliDcal  or  social  agenda.  The  growing  influence  of  hip-­‐hop,  film,  and  popular  sports  on  youth  culture  as  well  as  the  community’s  reliance  on  storytelling  in  the  form  of  colorful  murals  encouraged  the  development  of  Rhode’s  hybrid  street-­‐based  aestheDc.  His  strategic  intervenDons  transform  urban  landscapes  into  imaginary  worlds,  compressing  space  and  Dme,  as  two-­‐dimensional  renderings  become  the  subject  of  three-­‐dimensional  interacDons  by  a  sole  protagonist,  usually  played  by  the  arDst  or  by  an  actor  inhabiDng  the  role  of  arDst.
