The First Amendment
• Part of the United States Bill of Rights, which was ratified in 1791
• Establishes five freedoms:– Establishment Clause and Free Exercise of Religion– Freedom of Speech– Freedom of Press– Right to Assemble– Right to Petition the Government
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free
exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a
redress of grievances.”
