338 BC

• By this time, Rome was rapidly growing in size and power.

• Became the leading city in central Italy• In 340 BC, the Latin cities revolted, but Rome

defeated them and they came under direct Roman rule in 338 BC.

• Rome also defeated Greek city-states• Rome was now becoming an empire.

212 BC

• Rome continued to expand through Italy, defeating various rivals.

• The Punic Wars. – 1st War: Rome won! – 2nd War: Carthage won! – 3rd War: Rome destroys Carthage!

212 AD

• Outstanding leadership and conquests by leaders like Julius Caesar, Octavian (aka Augustus) and Trajan greatly expanded the Roman Empire

• Also in 212, all free men were made citizens. This was an attempt to increase Rome’s taxbase.

485 AD

• The Visigoths settled in the Empire around 375 AD• Very poorly treated, many revolts• When Roman subjects were unwilling to serve in

the army, the Empire replaced them with Visigoths

• In 395 AD, the Roman emperor died, and the empire was shared by his two sons. The Visigoths took advantage and destroyed Western Rome. Eastern Rome survived.

565 AD
