Hopefully, we now have the drought and cyclone season well and truly behind us. Thank you to all in our community for the way you responded to the potential hazards in the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie. Our school was lucky to be spared the extensive rain and wind events experienced by other school communities in southern Queensland and New South Wales. As always, the safety of our people is our highest priority. A highlight of Term 2 is always the commemoration of ANZAC Day both at school and in the community. Our school delivered a moving commemoration service attended by a large group of official guests. Thank you to our students and teachers for the work they put into all of the Anzac events including our school ceremony, the Tinana Dawn Service and the municipal march and ceremony. Our proud involvement in Anzac Day is an important tradition for our school. We had a visit from the Assistant Regional Director Steven Case this week. Mr Case participated in our school ANZAC Ceremony representing the North Coast Education Region. He also reviewed our school improvement progress with me. One of the undertakings given by our school as we were designated an Independent Public School, was to commit to the establishment of a school council. I met with representatives of the P&C before the vacation to amend the Model Constitution in line with our school’s needs. The next step is for our staff and community to vote to endorse the School Council Constitution. The model constitution will be available on the school website and in hard copy by request for anyone wishing to view the document. Our learning focus for 2017 is in the areas of Reading, Writing and Numeracy. The focus of my class visits this term will be to observe modelled reading. The provision of a quality role model for students in reading is an essential to the reading process. Modelled reading can occur in all curriculum areas. It is now less than two weeks until students undertake the NAPLAN assessments. Students are well prepared in each of the areas. NAPLAN gives our school valuable information about individual students and overall school programs relative to the rest of the nation. Q-ParentsQ-Parents is an exciting online parent portal, which will allowyou to access information about your child’s schooling likenever before. This term, we will be inviting all families to signup for Q-Parents. This will give you instant access to yourchild’s profile, allowing you to see and inform us of changes tocontact information, attendance data and absences, invoicesdue and paid, and early access to report cards! We think thisis going to be an amazing tool, and new enhancements arebeing continuously added as the initiative grows, and we hopeall our families get on board. If we do not have your correctemail address on file, you won’t receive an invitation, so pleasetake a few minutes to check which email address we have onfile at the office. MONEY COMING TO SCHOOL

Would parents please ensure that any money sent to school forany purposes other than tuckshop is sent directly to the officeand is placed in an envelope with student’s name, grade andparticular item or excursion they are paying for, clearly markedon the front of envelope. Pre-printed envelopes are availableat the office for any payments. Parents that prefer to depositthe funds directly into the school bank account are requestedto advise the office of the deposit and to use the studentsurname and invoice number as the payment reference. Aslarge amounts of money pass through the school office itbecomes difficult and time consuming to identify paymentswithout this information.

Invoices via Email

You should now be receiving all your child’s invoices via email. If you need to provide the office with an updated email address, please do so as soon as possible.

ABSENCES

Please Phone 4120 8066 and leave a message on theAbsence Line in the event of a student being absent. Please phone each day your child is absent from schoolunless the office has been previously advised of theabsence. Verbal messages by the student are notsufficient. This prevents any misunderstanding andensures the safety of your child. Please note that, bylaw, we are required to report any long term unexplainedabsences from school which may then be investigated bythe police.

LATE ARRIVAL

The school day begins at 8:45am and all staff will begininstruction at this time. Arrivals after 8:45am areconsidered to be late. Late arrival should beaccompanied by a note but parents may ring the officewith this information. Students must first report to theoffice to obtain a late slip that is to be given to theirteacher.

SMS NOTIFICATION

The school is now utilising an SMS system to notifyparents of any unexplained absence. If you receive a textmessage stating your child’s absence is unexplained, youcan reply via text, stating your child’s name, and reasonfor absence. If you believe your child should be presentat school, please phone the office immediately on 41208000.

EARLY DEPARTURE

Children leaving school early must be picked up from theoffice. Parents may ring in advance to arrange for theirchild/ren to be ready for collection, or send a note to theclass teacher. Your child will be given an early departureslip from the office.

Student Attendance – Same Day AbsenceNotification

The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest prioritiesfor the Department of Education and Training and for theQueensland Government.

At Tinana State School we endeavour to contact a parentor carer via text message when a student's absence isunexplained after the first roll marking of the day.

As home and school work together, student safety will beincreased. Here are some guidelines to make this process moreefficient:

• Notify the school by phone or email before 9:00am ifyour student is going to be absent that day. Pleasegive a brief explanation for the absence.

5

Free Hearing and Vision Tests

TuckshopMenu available here:

• If you receive a text message regarding anunexplained absence, please respond promptly, either via text or phone call.

• Please ensure that your mobile phone number andother contact details are up-to-date on the schoolrecords. This is critical, as we need to be able tocontact you in case of emergency.

• If your student arrives late to school, they must go tothe office for a late pass before going to theirclassroom. If they are leaving early, a leave passmust be obtained from the office.
