WHAT WE DOTIPS’s central activities are economic research and analysis, dialogue facilitation on relevanteconomic issues, project management and capacity building. It undertakes projects eitheron a commissioned basis (funded by an external partner) or as in-house Policy Briefs(funded internally). Core funding is provided from the budget of the Department of Tradeand Industry.
TIPS ORGANISATIONAL APPROACH
OVERVIEWTrade & Industrial Policies Strategies (TIPS) is anindependent, non-profit, economic research institutionbased in Pretoria, South Africa. It was established in1996 to support economic policy development, withan emphasis on industrial policy, in South Africa andthe region. TIPS has three main areas of work: tradeand industrial policy; inequality and economicinclusion; and sustainable growth.
TIPS’s main objectives are to undertake in-deptheconomic analyses, especially at the industrial level;to provide quality research as the basis for improvingindustrial policy as well as broader economicdevelopment strategies; and to support anincreasingly dynamic and evidence-based discourseon industrial policy and inclusive growth withacademics, other researchers and stakeholders.
TIPS offers high quality quantitative and qualitativeresearch, project management, dialogue facilitation,capacity building and knowledge sharing. TIPSundertakes commissioned research, as well as policypapers and think pieces around industrial policy andeconomic development.
TIPS has over 25 full-time staff and works with anetwork of expert researchers and institutionalpartners. Its activities are overseen by a Board ofDirectors comprising individuals involved in high-levelpolicy formulation in South Africa. TIPS also has aMembers Group that includes policy makers andresearchers from across South Africa, which providesintellectual guidance and support for the organisation.
TIPS is committed to the growth and development offuture economic researchers and operates asubstantial intern and young economist developmentprogramme in-house.

TIPS’s main strengths are:

This range of services allows the organisation to assist partners and beneficiaries at allstages of a policy life cycle. TIPS’s work is backed by support services that allow for flexible,high quality administration of complex programme management, large rolling budgets andreporting requirements.
