FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE

Writer’s Workshop Training

Third and fourth grade teachers participated in a full day Writer’s Workshop professional

development session at T.I.S. The training was conducted by Capitol Region Education Council

(CREC) trainer Najla Staggers. Najla will continue working with T.I.S. teachers again this year,

as we move into year two of Writer’s Workshop implementation.

Student Council is Officially Up and Running

The Tolland Intermediate School Student Council is comprised of two randomly selected

students from each of our classrooms. The T.I.S. Student Council works together as a team to

support our community and our school. The purpose of our student council is to enhance our

school climate by involving students in supporting one another, as well as a host of reputable

charities. Through student council, we strive to foster good citizenship and respect for all

individuals. Each year, the student council sponsors a number of school-wide spirit days,

fundraisers and it brings awareness to environmental issues.

My Super Hero Goals

Students in Mrs. Silberberg’s third grade class spent some time setting goals for their third grade

year. Among the goals were to become better readers, read chapter books complete harder math

problems and to earn a thousand HAWK cards. Student’s goals are displayed along with their

artwork outside of Mrs. Silberberg’s classroom.

Happy fall from TIS Nurses!!!

Here we are again in beautiful fall! We have had a busy start to the year and we hope everyone is

settling in to 2015/2016 school year.

We would like to take the time to remind parents that as the cooler weather approaches to

remember to dress your children in layers so they can add or remove outer clothing dependent on

the weather during recess and/or on and off bus.

If your child is absent please remember to call their absence in to the nurse’s office with their

teacher’s name and reason for absence so we can forward it to front office. If you send an email

to your child’s teacher you can also cc myself [email protected], or

[email protected] and we will be happy to forward the email to front office for their

absence notes. Thank you for your understanding on this matter!

If you still have not had time to bring medication or new med orders from MD for 2015/2016

school year never fear, you can come in any time to drop off meds and new orders. We will

process them as we receive them to provide the best care we can for your child.

Cold and allergy season has started here at TIS and we are seeing a lot of sore throats and

coughs, so we are encouraging good healthy hygiene of covering mouths, using tissues and of

course, healthy old fashioned hand-washing to help prevent the passing of germs! Hand-washing

is the No. 1 solution to prevent passing of germs according to research. Encouraging a good

amount of fluids to keep the body hydrated and healthy also helps!

As always our nurse’s office here at TIS is open for parents or children to discuss any concerns!

Raising Resilient Kids in Tolland

What should the next 300 years look like for our youth?

Join the

Conversation! You are invited to participate in a very special event, taking place on Thursday, October 15th at Tolland Middle School. On this date, the Board of Education will be hosting a Community Conversation: Raising Resilient Kids in Tolland. The conversation is meant to open a door to dialogue with community members about how the schools and larger community can work together to make Tolland a great place to grow up!

What should growing up in Tolland be like?

How do we create the experience we want for kids?

In an era of "everyone gets a trophy" how do kids learn to cope with challenging situations and emotions?

This conversation only works if we have YOUR voice! The evening schedule will be: Thursday, October 15th, Tolland Middle School Cafeteria 6:00-6:30 - Registration/Refreshments 6:30-7:00 - Welcome & Overview 7:00-8:30 - Facilitated Small Group Break-out Sessions 8:30-9:00 - Report & Wrap up Who needs to be there? Empty-nesters, Parents, Senior Citizens, Business people, Town employees, Educators, Students, Clergy, Adults without children, Lifelong Tolland residents, Residents new to town. We ALL have a role to play in creating the kind of community that we want Tolland to be. Please RSVP: Karen Moran or Diane Clokey at [email protected]. Let’s start something wonderful
