Tisha B’Av : The Window from our Past Looking to the Future By Ben Kreshtool I recently had a conversation with two colleagues where we were reminiscing about Tisha B’Av observances in Jewish camps. The common theme was sitting in a darkened room lit only by candles, while the Book of Lamentations was chanted, its haunting melody lingering in our minds throughout the observance. Some camps show sad films with Jewish themes such as “School Ties” or “The Wave.” It is interesting to note these films and their depictions of anti-Semitism, and I think about the world today and how anti-Semitism is very prevalent in society. Tisha B’Av was designated by our Sages as the day that we remember all of the calamities that have befallen our people, not just the destruction of the two Holy Temples in Jerusalem. The classical Rabbinic understanding as to why the Temples were destroyed was because of baseless hatred. The Talmud ( Gittin 55b) recounts a famous story of mistaken identity involving a man who had a friend named Kamtza, but had an enemy named bar Kamtza. The man threw a feast and had his servant go and fetch his friend Kamtza, but the servant mistakenly brought bar Kamtza instead. The host resolved to throw bar Kamtza out, but bar Kamtza offered to pay for his meal, then half the cost of the entire feast, and then he offered to pay for the full cost of the feast with each time the man saying no. The host then throws bar Kamtza out while the sages at the feast sat idly by and did not intervene. I won’t spoil the rest of the story for you, but there is revenge, a blemished sacrifice and a war between occupying Roman forces and the Jewish people. It is true that there is baseless hatred in our community. We don’t do enough to ensure that all people in our community feel welcome. But there is also baseless hatred that comes from outside our community as well. We have seen large increases in attacks against Jewish communities worldwide and the vitriol that is directed against the State of Israel is truly appalling and is anti-Semitism and nothing else. Israel, like all democracies has its flaws, but the comments that come from Europe, the United States, and Muslim countries cross the line from legitimate criticism to blatant anti-Semitism. In times like these, where anti-Racism movements are rightly voicing their objections to injustice, Jewish communities are maligned, excluded from and are often the targets of these movements. We cannot be silent. It is essential that we as individuals and we as communities stand up to fight against anti-Semitism wherever it rears its ugly head, whether that be the college campus, the supermarket, or especially social media. We must engage, we must enlighten and we must ensure a safe future for the Jewish people. Tisha B’Av is a day where we mourn the tragic events of our people’s past and it is extremely important that we do that, but the events of Tisha B’Av do not have to dictate our future. More calamities will befall our people, and it will be because people sat idly by and did not cry out against the perpetrators of anti-Semitism. The future will be determined based on our deeds today; we should not waste the opportunity. Beth El will hold a special Tisha B’Av service on Saturday night August 13. Shabbat Mincha will begin at 7:00 p.m. to be followed by Seudat HaMafseket, the traditional meal of separation at 7:30 p.m., after which we will recite the Book of Lamentations beginning at 8:15 p.m. We hope that you will join us for this moving service. By Ben Kreshtool

I recently had a conversation with two colleagues where we were reminiscing about Tisha B’Av observances in Jewish camps.

The Talmud (Gittin 55b) recounts a famous story of mistaken identity involving a man who had a friend named Kamtza, but had an enemy named bar Kamtza. I won’t spoil the rest of the story for

you, but there is revenge, a blemished sacrifice and a war between occupying Roman forces and the Jewish people.

It is true that there is

baseless hatred in our community. In times like

these, where anti-Racism movements are rightly voicing their objections to injustice, Jewish communities are maligned, excluded from and are often the targets of these movements. We cannot be silent. It is essential that we as individuals and we as

communities stand up to fight against anti-Semitism wherever it rears its ugly head, whether that be the college campus, the supermarket, or especially social media.

Sandy describes her Jewish upbringing in Washington, DC as satisfactory, but lacking many of the Jewish celebrations and customs that she has now come to know and love. At the same time, Malcolm grew up in an Orthodox atmosphere and was willing to consider a less stringent way to express his Judaism. After they married and Sandy had moved to Baltimore, they decided to select a conservative synagogue. They met Joe Lipavsky during their exhaustive search and the rest was history. The Bermans credit Joe with their decision to join the congregation and enroll their children in the Beth El Schools. Today, 50 years later, Sandy and Malcolm fondly remember how warmly they were welcomed into the Beth El community.

The couple has three sons, ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren and one more on the way. They fondly remember the many family simchas including every Bris and Baby Naming, Bar and Bat Mitzvah, and some weddings celebrated with Beth El and officiated by the Beth El Clergy. They have enjoyed vibrant relationships with them all, from Rabbi Jacob Agus and Cantor Saul Hammerman to Rabbi Mark Loeb and Cantor Thom King to Rabbis Steve Schwartz and Dana Saroken. Through the years, the Bermans have given their time to the synagogue. Sandy was active in the Beth El Sisterhood and served as president. She and Malcolm have served on the Beth El Board.

Now, with Jerry Schnydman, Sandy is the enthusiastic co-chair of the Beth El Generations Campaign. She says she eagerly accepted the position because she wants Beth El to be a leader in providing a meaningful Jewish lifestyle and education far into the future. She is deeply moved by the concept of L’dor Vador.

Sandy and Malcolm’s generous gift is earmarked for Jewish education. It has already allowed the school to expand its education offerings with new technology. The school has purchased iPads, projectors, speakers, and a computer for presentations and has trained our teachers and administrators to use the new technology. For the next school year, the school will have a portable Smartboard that can travel from classroom to classroom. The new technology gives students new options to connect with Jewish education, whether it’s practicing writing Hebrew letters, using a computer game to follow Abraham’s journey, connecting with modern Hebrew language, or doing research on the iPad. It adds a new dimension to the school’s educational arsenal by making learning more exciting and interactive.

In the Preschool, their gift will make the classrooms more environmentally friendly, provide new sleeping areas for infants and toddlers, build child-friendly bathrooms and develop a kitchen where adults and children work side by side.

In addition to their remarkable history of 50 years with Beth El, the Bermans are deeply engaged in the greater community. The Association of Fundraising Professionals honored them as the Outstanding Philanthropists in 2015. They have been involved with the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, LifeBridge Health, The Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric, Stevenson University, and the Dyslexia Tutoring Program, to name a few.

Sandy and Malcolm Berman “The name of our Campaign, ‘Generations,’ says it all. I believe that together we can meet our goals and that together, we will keep Beth El strong and vibrant for future generations. I am grateful to our members who have already participated. But now, I invite the rest of our members who have not yet made a commitment to say YES to the future of Beth El. The result will be a genuine congregational effort of which we can all be very proud.” —Sandy Berman

You may not even realize it, but vinyl is making a comeback. Records, the ‘old fashioned’ kind, pressed vinyl, flat discs played on turntables, spun at a precise 33 and 1/3 rpms. They faded so suddenly in the late 80s, giving way to the onslaught of CDs and the crisp, clean sound of digital music. CDs were smaller, they didn’t scratch or wear out; they could even be played in a car, for crying out loud! (Try doing that with a record!) Before you knew it, almost overnight, CDs were ubiquitous and records were assigned to the dust bin of musical history.

But now they are back. You’ll find them in funky new record shops with names like The Sound Garden or the True Vine, Human Head Records or the Turntable Lab, and online as well. You’ll find them on college campuses and in the rooms of high school students. The young leading the way, the record a new countercultural expression in the classic counterculture milieu. If you haven’t held a record in your hand for a while, the sheer size of it, the colors of the album cover, the printed lyrics and liner notes, will virtually take your breath away.

Of course the debate has been quietly raging for some time, mostly in audiophile circles. Digital versus analog. The pristine sound of the CD, pop and crackle-free, clean to a fault, its 0s and 1s somehow forming the melodies that make up the music that we love. Compare that with the old records, their scratchy quirks, the hiccup at precisely that lyric, the sound of the needle touching down

on the grooves. Some argue that there is a warmth and resonance, an ambiance, a physicality and presence that digital sound can never reproduce.

I would say it is not just music. There is a fundamental coldness to digital life. A loneliness. You can see it in subway cars and restaurants and libraries, where groups of people gather but spend all of their time staring at their phones. You sense it in the workplace, walking by office after office, only to see yet another worker typing on a keyboard, staring at a screen. You can feel the coldness in social media, the Facebook posts and Instagram photos, digital snapshots of our lives that are one-dimensional, that lack feeling and vibrancy and messiness and unpredictability – the true substance of human life. No wonder young people are embracing vinyl again.

And so it was that I found myself poking around in the back corner of our basement storage area. My old record albums were in there somewhere. I hadn’t seen them in years, but I knew I would never have thrown them away. Buried in the bottom of a shelf, inside a box, inside another box, wrapped in plastic, dusty and neglected. It was a charge to lug them out, bringing them back into daylight, flipping through the covers, remembering old images that will always be ingrained in my mind, and the memories of moments and people and even a time, a feeling, that match the images and songs, the melodies and lyrics, the soundtrack of my life.

Anyone have an old turntable lying around?

Dedicating a MahzorThe mahzor, the prayer book which is used during the High Holidays, has been updated to combine traditional texts with an up-to-date translation and includes modern and ancient commentaries.

According to Rabbi Steven Schwartz, “This is a mahzor that will give people a deeper understanding of the themes of the High Holy Days, as well as a new level of access to the service itself. Virtually every page has a new insight, comment or historical note that will enhance the entire experience of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur at Beth El.”

Dedications in honor of or in memory of a loved one can be made for $36/book by contacting Diane Cole at [email protected].

Selichot: Reflection, Dedication, and CelebrationSaturday, September 24, at 8:00 p.m. Honoring Malcolm and Sandra Berman as we rededicate the Berman-Rubin SanctuaryIt is traditional to begin the High Holiday season with Selichot, a service of reflection in which we recognize our human frailty and ask God to forgive our failings. This year, we will also be adding the elements of Dedication and Celebration as we rename our sanctuary in honor of our devoted members, Sandra and Malcolm Berman.

The evening will begin with a procession of the Torah scrolls in their white High Holiday covers to be placed in the Ark, followed by a beautiful Selichot service featuring cellist Evan Drachman, the Beth El clergy and the men of the Beth El Choir. We will then honor the Bermans with the formal dedication of the Berman-Rubin Sanctuary, and a musical performance led by Maestro James Harp featuring stars of the Lyric Opera Baltimore.

The evening will conclude with a delicious dessert reception in the Offit Auditorium. This will be a spiritually uplifting and musically thrilling Selichot experience. There is no charge for this event.

Development Corporation for IsraelIsrael Bonds: Upgrades And UpdatesSupport the State of Israel Bonds 5777 High Holy Days Appeal at Beth El CongregationNot just your grandparents Israel bonds, we can be your Israel bonds too because of changes making investing, reinvesting, and redeeming Israel bonds simpler and faster. With investment options beginning at $100 and gift bonds starting at $36 (available online) Israel bonds are accessible to almost everyone. Currently, terms range from 2-10 years, bonds are held in book-entry form (no certificates to lose or forget about) and redemption checks are mailed automatically at maturity or a maturity check can be used to reinvest.

An Israel bonds investment at this time says you stand with Israel – a country that educates, builds, and innovates; a nation that lives by democracy, liberty and human rights/freedoms for all people. Each investment rejects the BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanction) movement and enables the development of a country known for producing technologies and innovations that connect, feed, and heal the world. Israel Bonds has helped Israel reach many milestones – your support for Israel Bonds will help Israel maintain its economic strength and grow its accomplishments.

Israel bonds were introduced 65 years ago. Since then close to

$40 billion have been acquired by thousands upon thousands of individual and institutional investors worldwide for strengthening, supporting, and connecting with Israel. Never, in all that time, has Israel missed an interest or redemption payment on Israel bonds. The strength of the Israel Bonds campaign is derived in part from the synagogue’s appeals and once again, Sonya Goodman and Robert Slatkin will be co-chairing the Israel Bonds/Beth El’s appeal.

Again this year: Four Matching Partners Demonstrate Their Support for Israel.

Bay Bank (merging with Hopkins Federal Savings Bank), The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore are joined again by The Haron Dahan Foundation and Sandra R. & Malcolm C. Berman, as they continue the 100% match on all Israel Bond investments made during the High Holy Days appeals.

Last year, this match helped Baltimore’s Israel Bond appeal achieve over $10 million in sales.

Rosh Hashanah & Yom KippurBeth El Seniors wish all of its members and the entire synagogue family a very happy and healthy 5777. May this be the year that we all find peace in the world. Because of the holidays, we will not be having an October dinner. We hope to see everyone on November 13, 2016.

Membership: Dues are Now DueBeth El Seniors is always welcoming new members 50 years of age or older to join our active organization. Dues are only $18 per person /$36 for a couple for a year. Each of our dinner meetings include enjoyable entertainment for a price of $21 per member. Where else can you get such a deal? Contact Marcia Friedlander at 443-352-8233 for a membership application.

Torah Maintenance CardsA project of the Beth El Seniors is to support the care and repair of our synagogue’s Torahs and Megillot. A kosher, usable Torah must be written by hand with a pen and special ink by a learned scribe. Every letter must be perfectly formed and every word must be correctly spelled. The ink cannot be chipped off even a little bit. The parchment on which the Torah is written must be flawless. The slightest tear or smudge will render the Torah unfit for use. The Beth El Torahs are regularly inspected and repaired. This is a costly process. It is a mitzvah to contribute to a process that keeps our sacred scrolls preserved for future generations.

Torah Maintenance Cards may be purchased at the Beth El front office or contact Dorothy Fineblum at 410-653-2631. These all-purpose cards are six for $10.00 or $2.00 each.

Exploring the Meaning of TeshuvaTwo Special Programs on September 18 and 24What causes some friends and family members to stop speaking to each other? What does “teshuva” (usually translated as “repentance”) mean? What if you ask forgiveness from someone you have hurt or wronged and the person refuses to forgive or does not respond? What does not being able to forgive do to us? Are there sins that are unforgivable? Is it ever too late to reconcile? How do we “do” teshuva?

As the High Holiday season approaches, you are invited to explore these questions and others in a two-part program.

PART 1: Sunday, September 18, from 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. View the moving film, The Straight Story, followed by a discussion led by Gail Lipsitz. The movie is based on the true story of Alvin Straight, who journeyed across Iowa and Wisconsin on a tractor to visit his estranged brother Lyle, who had suffered a stroke. Alvin hopes to reconcile with his brother before he dies. (Why travel by tractor? Alvin has impaired vision and cannot drive a car.) Along his six-week, 300-mile journey, he meets all kinds of people and comes to deal with his own mistakes and mortality. The 1999 film, at times funny, at times poignant, was directed by David Lynch and stars Richard Farnsworth and Sissy Spacek.

PART 2: Saturday, September 24, from 1:15 - 2:15 p.m., “Talmud and Teshuva” We will look at some short Talmudic texts (in translation) to learn from the wisdom of our rabbinic sages. What can their insights into human psychology teach us about mending our own relationships today? The discussion will be led by Gail Lipsitz.

Parts 1 and 2 can be “stand alone” programs. However, those who can attend both parts will find many enlightening parallels between the film and the Talmudic passages.

There is no fee for these programs, which are open to members of the congregation and the community. RSVP for the September 18 program by contacting Ellen Marks at Beth El, 410-580-5166 or [email protected].

Susan Herskovitz Receives Baylin AwardWhen asked to choose three words to describe this year’s Early Childhood Baylin Award winner, the answer came easily; loving, passionate, and committed. Susan Herskovitz is an amazing teacher. She loves each and every one of her three-year-olds like they are her own. Susan is a veteran teacher for whom teaching never get “old.” Every year, she designs her classroom and her teaching for her students. She understands that development and facilitates a classroom that furthers both their cognitive and social emotional growth. There is no greater joy than seeing three-year-olds run into their classroom and jump into Susan’s arms. They know they are loved and that feeling of being loved allows them to take risks and grow. Whenever a volunteer is needed, Susan is there. Whenever an extra project presents itself, Susan is the first to accept the challenge. She regularly is available to mentor less experienced teachers and share her knowledge and passion. All of these attributes make Susan the perfect recipient of the Baylin Award and we congratulate her for a job well done.

Mitzvah Monsters Make Their MarkBy Becky Gordon

The Mitzvah Monsters are a group of religious school students in kindergarten and first grade. They meet with Morah Becky before school on Sundays and learn all about mitzvot through songs, stories and projects. This year, they helped lead religious school services, made get well cards for the ill, performed for seniors in assisted living facilities, and much more.

The Monsters learned that when G-d created the world, he didn’t actually finish the job, but rather, left things for people to do to make the world a better place. They discovered this is a mitzvah called Tikkun Olam. After learning about recycling, the Monsters spearheaded a Tikkun Olam project: collecting dried up markers to be turned into clean energy. They designed a collection box and brought it to the school’s Sunday minyanim where they sang The Tikkun Olam Song while their schoolmates placed their old markers in the box. In four short months, 848 were collected. Once recycled, they will produce enough energy to cook 106 eggs, toast 106 slices of bread and heat up 212 cups of hot chocolate. Kol hakavod to the Mitzvah Monsters and all of the Beth El students who made this project a great success!

The Mitzvah Monsters will take up the collection again in September and YOU CAN HELP! Gather up your markers at home, at school, and at work (coloring, dry erase and highlighters). Separate any that are old and dried up and bring them to the religious school office. Ask your friends and family as well. We will add them to our collection and, with your help, we will exceed this year’s successful campaign!
