    SIDEDRAW UNLOADING KIT

    Installation instructions for side draw gravity unload.

    Preliminary ConsiderationsThe Chief side draw system is available for use in standard Chief bins #8 through #34 inspecified ring heights only.The standard side draw system has the discharge located in the center of the 4 th ring fromthe foundation (12-5). Optional discharge locations above or below the 4 th ring areavailable upon request.

    Door and transitions must not be located within 10 feet to either side of the centerline of the side draw discharge.

    Baffle InstallationInstall the side draw baffles in a vertical column, one in each sidewall ring, beginningwith the second ring from the eave and continuing down the inside of the sidewall to andincluding the discharge ring.

    The top baffle MUST be located between stiffener lines in the second ring sheet directlyabove planned discharge location (when viewed from inside the bin). See detail below.

    After the 3rd ring is added to the bin, locate and mark the eight baffle mounting holesin the 2nd ring using the provided template. Align the center sidelap hole in the templatewith the center hole on the sidewall sheet between the stiffener holes. Drill the bafflemounting holes using a 1/2 drill bit.

    Apply 36 inches of the 3-1/2 x 1/2 closure strip provided to each of the two baffle

    flanges and install the baffle WITH THE LARGER END DOWN. Use eight 7/16 x 1-1/2 bin bolts with the heads on the outside. Securely tighten all baffle bolts.

    As each additional ring is added, mark and drill the baffle mounting holes in the preceding ring and mount the baffle as instructed on previous page.

    Reinforcing Sheet

    The ring directly above the discharge sheet requires a reinforcing sheet laminated on theinside of the bin sidewall. The reinforcing sheet should be installed as the ring above theoutlet is being assembled, refer to figure #4.

    Discharge SheetThe discharge sheet requires a reinforcing sheet laminated on the inside of the sidewall.Before installing this reinforcing sheet, cut the discharge holes in the reinforcing sheetand discharge sheet as follows.

    Lay the provided template on the inside face of the reinforcing sheet. Be sure to matchthe top edge of the sheet with the top of the template. Align the sidelap and mark and drillthe (14) 1/2 diameter discharge mounting holes and cut out the 13 wide x 17 high,rectangular opening centered between holes. (12 x 17 opening when using a rack and pinion gate.)

    Repeat this process in the proper location of the discharge sheet. Simply laminate thereinforcing sheet directly over the top of the standard sheet (both endlaps aligned) anduse the reinforcing sheet as pattern to mark the standard sheet.

    Install the discharge reinforcing sheet following the instructions outlined above.

    Locate and drill the baffle mounting holes as instructed above but do not install the final baffle.

    NOTE: Additional 7/16 x 2 bin bolts are provided for bolting the stiffeners to thesidewall sheets where reinforcing sheets are used. Typical 7/16 x 1 1/2 bin bolts may

    be used if laminated sheets are light enough gauge

    NOTE: In cases where a reinforcing sheet falls in a transition ring it will be necessary tofield drill the sidelap of the reinforcing sheet to match the sidewall sheets.

    Wind Rings

    All bins that have a Sidedraw System installed on them will also need wind rings added.The quantity and location of wind rings will change when a Sidedraw System is added tothe bin. (See charts below for quantities and locations of wind rings for your particular

    bin.

    Wind Ring Installation

    Consult the Chief catalog for the quantity of wind rings required for your bin. Thequantity of wind rings depends on the size of the bin and the application of anyaccessories (such as a sidedraw system). For quantities and placement of wind ringsrequired when a Sidedraw System is installed on the bin, refer to the charts in thismanual. The wind rings will be attached to the sidewall using one bracket per stiffener spaced 58-5/16 apart (38-7/8 on 3 stiffened bins). The brackets are specially formedand prepunched to bolt directly to the sidewall stiffener holes. The wind ring segmentswill be joined together using a bolted coupler.

    NOTE: All wind ring segments are 248 long, and may need field cut to keep couplers in between brackets. Always cut segments on end opposite end with pre-punched hole.

    (1) Working from outside the bin, determine the proper location for installation of thefirst wind ring.

    (2) Bolt the first wind ring bracket to the sidewall stiffener holes as shown in Detail below using (2) of the stiffener attachment bolts and nuts with bolt heads on theinside. (Note: Wind ring brackets may be installed below the endcaps if desired toallow for clearance of ladders and platforms.)

    ASSEMBLY DETAIL OF WIND RING BRACKET

    (3) Move right to the next stiffener and repeat step 2.

    (4) When 4 wind ring brackets have been installed, slide the first ring segment throughthe four brackets leaving approximately 29 inches of the segment projection past thelast bracket. Insert coupler over end of wind ring segment, and attach with 5/8 x 4

    bolt.

    (5) Repeat step 2 through 3 until four more brackets have been installed.

    (6) Slide another connector into the end of the previously installed ring segment. Slidethe next ring segment through the four brackets and butt it firmly against the previoussegment.

    (7) Repeat steps 5 and 6 until only one ring segment remains to be installed.Installing the final ring segment requires special procedures.

    (8) Attach coupler to end of last wind ring segment.

    (9) Slide coupler attach to segment over end of 1 st segment so segments are boltedtogether.

    (10) Field cut other end of segment so segments are flush.

    (11) Slide last coupler and brackets over segments.

    (12) Hold segments flush and slide coupler over joint and attach with 5/8 x 4 bolts.Attach brackets to stiffeners

    (13) Check to see that all bolts in the complete wind ring are tight

    (14) Repeat steps 1 through 13 for the remaining wind rings.

    Sidedraw Clamshell

    The Clamshell Gate is to be centered directly over the discharge opening. Mount theclamshell on the previous drilled (14) 1/2 diameter discharge mounting holes using (14)7/16 x 1-1/2 bin bolts. Caulk the flange of the gate before bolting, to insure a weather

    tight installation. After the gate is installed, the last flume may be bolted in place. If applicable mount the pulley bracket and pulley for the optional winch kit. Attach thespout to the gate with the hinge rod and (2) axle caps. Miscellaneous parts such as theControl Rope, Control Bar, Cable, Winch, ect. Are to be installed as shown in followingdetails. A 5/16 x 1 3/4 eyebolt is supplied for the control rope tie down. Locateapproximately 4 above the Bin floor below gate and drill a 3/8 diameter hole. Doublenut, one inside and one outside. Follow winch manufacturers instructions for installingcable winch and use detail on following page for a reference in bolting to sidewall sheet.Operation of winch should be smooth.

    Discharge Spout

    Before installing the final baffle, insert the discharge spout through the 12 x 17discharge hole.

    Apply the 1/2 x 3 closure strip provided around the discharge plate, and mount thedischarge spout on the previously drilled (14) 1/2 diameter discharge mounting holesusing (14) 7/16 x 1-1/2 Bin Bolts with heads on the inside. Now install the final baffleusing instruction on previous pages.

    Rack and Pinion Slide Gate

    The rack and pinion slide gate assembly bolts to the discharge spout flange using (8) 3/8x 1 bolts.

    NOTE: Be sure that the rack and pinion slide gate assembly is installed properly. Thecast iron rack must be visible from outside the bin when the slide gate is closed.

    To install the two rack and pinion support braces, loosely bolt the top ends of the bracesto the inside of the bottom corners of the rack and pinion frame as shown using two 3/8x 1 bolts. Hold the bottom ends of the braces back against the bin sidewall next to thestiffeners. Mark and drill two 7/16 holes and attach the bottom end of the braces to thesidewall with 3/8 x 1 bolts with heads on the inside. Tighten all bolts.

    Mount the chain pulley wheel on the rack and pinion shaft using the key provided.Tighten the setscrews.

    Use 3/16 control chain (not provided by Chief).

    After installing the control chain, mount the chain wheel guard over the bottom of thechain wheel as shown in the detail. The mounting ears on the chain wheel guard bolt tothe bottom sides of the rack and pinion flanges using 5/16 x 1-1/4 bolts. (A hole mayneed to be field drilled in the bottom flange of the gate to bolt the bottom mounting ear of the chain wheel guard.)

    Operating Instruction LabelInstall the operating instruction labels in plain view at operator level at the control chainoperating station. The label must be clearly visible to anyone operating the side draw.Installation of the side draw is not complete until this labels are in place.
