The name "Titanic“ originally alluded to its size and power. However, its shipwreck on its maiden voyage was an echo of the fate of the Titans in Greek mythology.

The war of the Titans is a mythological story which describes the fight between Zeus and the Titans for control of the world, which lasted ten years.The result was that the Titans were banished from heaven and condemned to live in the depths of the earth.

The Titans appeared for the first time in Hesíodo’s Teogonía ( 7C BC) where he names and describes the Titans and tells the story of The War of the Titans which they are famous for nowadays. (verse 617-819).

In the Cosmogony (creation of the universe) we can see how the universe was created. Different natural phenomena (Day, Night, Ocean, Sun, etc.) are personified by deities and organized in a dynastic genealogy.

The first generation of TitansThe original Titans were the 12 children of Uranus and Gaea. They are the siblings of the Hecatonchires and the Cyclopses. The first 12 children were six male Titans and six female Titanesses.

The first generation of Titans

The three Cyclopses (Argés, Brontés and Esteropes), brothers of the Titans and the Hecatonchiros, were giants with only one eye on their forehead, they were cruel and serious in nature; but good craftsmen.They lived high up in the mountains and had a fire which was always lit, they forged their weapons and armour in a huge volcano.

The Hecatonchires (the centimanos), and (Coto, Briareo and Giges) as well as the Titans’ brothers and cyclopses, are the other supernatural beings who were giants with 100 arms.They had a force so powerful that they were able to throw mountains like rocks and shake the planet.

Marriage between family members was common in Greek mythology and some Titans and Titanesses married and produced The second generation of Titans

The second generation of TitansCronos and Rea formed the most important couple of the second generation, as they were both Kings and Gods and had six children:       Hestia, Goddess of the hearth.       Hera, the Goddess Queen of Olympus.       Hades, God of the Underworld        Demeter, Goddess of farming       Poseidon, God of the oceans.       Zeus, Supreme God, father of the Gods of Olympus.

Infact Zeus himself is a Titan.

The War of the Titans was led by the father Cronos, who challenged the supreme reigning power of his brother Zeus and other Olympian Gods, the Hecantochiros and the Cyclopses.

Explanation of the mythThe Titans are giants who represent the forces of nature and the elements without restriction. Contrastingly the Olympic Gods represent more refined Gods which the more primitive Gods give into.

With this mythological reference how could the Titanic not have a grand and dramatic ending? The transatlantic passenger´s agonizing struggle took place throughout a long and dark night. It would seem that the boat´s destiny had already been written by Hesodio 2,700 years before the disaster took place.
