Malaysia is stated to have some 0.03% of global world reserves of rare earth minerals. Lynas Corporation had built their Advance Material Plant at Kuantan, Pahang, for rare earth mineral processing using processed ore from Mount Weld, Australia. This project had resulted in protests from various sectors of the public with fears of environmental, safety and health issues being raised. It is believed that these fears arose from a lack of accurate scientific information available to the public on rare earths in general, the processes involved and the measures that can be taken to safe-guard the environment, safety and health of not just the workers in the plant but also the general populace around Gebeng.
As part of a public engagement and public awareness initiative, the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and the National Professors’ Council (NPC)’s Working Group on Rare Earths have arranged for a one-day International Symposium on Rare Earths in Kuala Lumpur.
The Symposium will, among other topics, also address safety, health and environmental issues concerning rare earths including providing a platform for rare earth experts to give a global supply and demand perspective to rare earths and their many applications. Currently, the global demand for rare earths is expected to provide myriad business opportunities in Malaysia utilising rare earths for green technology industries.
1. To provide factual information to participants on rare earths processing and refining as well as on the potential down-stream business opportunities.2. To provide a forum for participants to engage with international rare earth experts.3. To provide information on safety, healthy and environmental in the rare earth industry.4. To enhance public awareness on rare earths.
