INTRODUCTION

In this lesson, students will learn about leisure-time, cultural and recreational activities in the local community and the Greater Los Angeles area. They will identify their own interests and explore new activities as well.

ASSESSMENT TASK

Student will complete a chart showing up to 6 items of information about a leisure-time, cultural or recreational activity or venue. 14 pts possible (2 pts each correct answer; 2 pts for legibility).

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES

Students work in groups to brainstorm leisure-time, recreational and cultural activities in the local community. The group which comes up with the most activities is the winner!

Identify recreational, leisure-time and cultural activities using picture prompts. Teacher uses pictures available in textbook or PowerPoint presentation.

Bring a local newspaper to class. Look in the Entertainment section. Are there any interesting events? How much do they cost?

Plan a class field trip, e.g. Getty Museum (see blue info sheet – p. 3).

COMPUTER LAB IDEAS

Students create a presentation about a hobby they’ve had for many years. Describe hobby & explain how they got started. Use the Internet to find pictures, or bring in own pictures, using scanner. (Word, PPT, Internet)

Interview classmates regarding their hobbies and interests; write a summary or create a presentation. (Word or PowerPoint)

Getty Museum Field Trip: Information Sheet

In February 2007, I met with Scott Winterrowd, Education Specialist from the Getty. He gave me a lot of info to pass along to you about preparing for, arranging and conducting field trips to the Museum:

The Getty provides instructional materials for Beginning and Intermediate/Advanced ESL classes. Training is offered to introduce you to the materials and how to integrate them into your class. Materials include lesson plans, worksheets, transparencies and images. All materials are available online to download (docs in Word). There are also additional images on the website. (See “Related Websites” for links to online materials.)

You may arrange bus transportation with the Getty for your class any time the Getty is open: Closed Monday; open 10-6 T-W-Th-Sun; Open 10-9 Fri & Sat. They will send a bus to pick up you & your students, take you to the Museum, and return you to school. Busses are free. No children allowed (due to liability issues). Students bringing children should make arrangements to drive themselves and meet your class at the museum. Ask Scott about parking passes.

In order to reserve a bus, you must first attend Scott’s training on his instructional materials. (See back of this sheet for next training date.)

Bus reservations must be made no later than 3-4 weeks in advance. Contact Scott Winterrowd: [email protected] BE SURE TO GET A FIELD TRIP FORM SIGNED BY YOUR ADMINISTRATOR, WITH A COPY TO PORTIA (1 week in advance).

Scott will send museum maps if requested with reservation.

If your class plans to send thank you cards, please let Scott know in advance (via email). At your request, he will send you one response that you can share with your students, letting them know he received their cards. He cannot respond to each individual message.

recreation: a pastime, diversion, exercise, or other resource affording relaxation and enjoyment..

leisure-time: free from the demands of work or duty, when one can rest, enjoy hobbies or sports, etc.

cultural: of or relating to the arts and manners that a group favors.

activity: action or movement; any specific behavior.

event: something that happens at a given place and time. 

hobby: an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation.

sport: an athletic activity.

brochure: a small booklet with a cover; has information

facilities: something designed, built, installed, etc., to serve a specific function affording a convenience or service.

amenities: features that provide comfort, convenience, or pleasure.

legend/key: a table on a map or chart that lists and explains the symbols used.

chart: presenting information or facts in the form of graphs or tables.

Local Places of Interest

Look at the attached list of places to go in our local community. Select 2 places you want to know more about. Create a chart with information you find.

Directions:

1. Follow the links to each place. Look through the websites for the information listed below (e.g. hours, location).

2. Create a title using Word Art (Insert à Picture à Word Art) and put your name on the second line. Ask your teacher or the instructional assistant for help if you need it.

3. Create a table like the one below in Microsoft Word (Table à Insert à Table) and enter your information there. (Plan ahead! How many rows & columns will you need?)

4. Your teacher will demonstrate how to go back and forth between Internet Explorer and Microsoft Word. You can even copy & paste information (instead of retyping!).

Answer the following questions. Then, write a preview using Microsoft Word (Start à Programs à Microsoft Word). Ask your teacher to read it and give you feedback.

What is the movie’s rating (e.g. PG-13, R)? What does this rating mean?

What is the closest movie theater where this movie is playing?

FIFTH: Save

1. Click on File. 2. Click on Save As.3. Click on My Documents.4. Double click [Your Class Folder].5. Look for your folder.6. Double click on your name.8. Give your document a name. 9. Click on Save.

SIXTH: See the Movie and Write a Review!

Go to the movie theater and watch the movie you selected. (You can even buy tickets online!) Come back to class and write a movie review for movies.yahoo.com.

To submit a review, click on Write a Review on the movie page. Follow the instructions. Movie reviews must be very short, only 30 words or less. (You can write your review in Microsoft Word first, then copy & paste it into Yahoo.) Ask your teacher for help.
