VDHA Newsletter Volume 3 Winter 2017 Edition
Title goes here
2016 was filled with many triumphs in the advancement of the
dental hygiene profession in Vermont. With the passage of bill
S.20 for the Dental Therapist provider model and Medicaid
Reimbursement for dental hygienists we have made significant
strides forward in our profession and we have a lot to be
proud of! Vermont is once again setting the pace for the rest
of the nation for the advancement of the dental hygiene
profession. We would like to celebrate 2017 with all of you,
and hope that you join us for social gatherings and CE
meetings. There is no better way to connect with fellow
hygienists here in Vermont. We truly are better together.
Happy New Year from the Executive Board of the VDHA!
Congratulations to the 2016 VDHA Outstanding
Hygienist of the Year Award Recipient:
Robin Miller, RDH!

VDHA News Updates
Dental Therapist
Update
The bill to create a dental therapist workforce
provider in Vermont was signed into law by
Governor Shumlin in June 2016. Since that
time, Vermont Technical College (VTC) has
sought and secured grant funding for
program planning purposes. VTC began
advertising the open position of dental
therapy program director in December, and
the selection process is scheduled to be
completed by the beginning of February. The
director of any dental therapy educational
program in Vermont must be a dentist or a
dental therapist. Once a director has been
hired, program planning will begin. If you
would like further information about the
program please contact Sheila Bannister at

Dental Hygienists’ Association
SMADHA
Dental hygiene students at Vermont Technical
College are all members of the American Dental
Hygienists’ Association. The student association
at VTC has an executive board consisting of a
president, president elect, vice president,
secretary, and treasurer. Students elect their
association officers on an annual basis; the list of
officers is posted on the VDHA website.
The purpose of the student professional
organization is to provide community service,
and to do fundraising for charitable donation
through toothbrush and White Strip sales.
Primary fundraising activities occur during the
fall semester. In December 2016 students made
a charitable donation to the Salvation Army,
Christmas for Kids fund.
Some of the fundraising proceeds are used for
student attendance at the ADHA District I
Student Meeting at Yankee Dental Congress.
Twenty-four students will be attending their
regional meeting in Boston in January, 2017.
Students are currently planning community
service activities such as providing oral health
education in elementary schools, and other
organizations. At the end of the academic year,
students will use the remaining fundraising
proceeds to make a donation to a charitable
organization of their choice.
