Title: Perfect Push-up through Immersive Virtual Reality (PPIVR) Estimated Time: 120 minutes Purpose: Increase Soldiers performance on the ACFT Context: The Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) is a six-event test designed to measure the Soldiers total body fitness level. Unit leaders and commanders use the results of the testing to determine their unit’s physical fitness levels and training needs. The hand release push-up is the third event in the series and is the most technically skilled event featuring multiple points of performance and inspection. The ACFT is an entrance and service requirement for all Soldiers and must be taken and passed twice annually in order to remain qualified for continued service, military schooling, and other favorable actions. Overview: Physical Readiness Training (PRT) sessions are conducted on a regular basis throughout the Army and are designed and led by junior and senior leaders. PRT sessions improve Soldiers physical fitness levels and enhance physical readiness. Physical readiness is the Soldiers ability to meet the physical demands of combat, accomplish the mission and continue to fight and win our Nations wars. The Army Combat Fitness Test is the system of record that measures a Soldiers physical fitness level and is the gauge that leaders and unit commanders use to determine their units physical and training needs. Expected Outcomes: Soldiers and leaders will be able to demonstrate a deeper level of understanding for the purpose of the ACFT, they can describe what the hand release push-up is designed to measure, they can explain how AR/VR can improve performance, and they can design and incorporate the use of technology into a program that will enhance strength, endurance, and mobility, while simultaneously improve motor skills and muscle memory. Resources: Stop watch, AR/VR prototype, wearable sensors, video, audio, and still photo capabilities Facilities: Indoor gym Stakeholders: Regular Army (RA), Army National Guard (ARNG), and Army Reserve (AR)

Title: Perfect Push-up through Immersive Virtual Reality (PPIVR) Estimated Time: 120 minutes Purpose: Increase Soldiers performance on the ACFT, emphasis on the hand release push-up

Performance Problem: The average failure rate of the ACFT is 30% with 10% of those failures being directly related to the hand release push-up event. Soldiers on average incorrectly perform 5-10 push within the allotted two-minute time standard. In some cases, those incorrectly performed push-ups can be the difference between pass and failure. However, if Soldiers were able to correctly perform the hand release push-up 100% of the time it would drastically decrease the number ACFT failures and significantly increase the Soldiers performance on the ACFT and overall physical fitness level.

Proposed Instructional Solution: During this two-hour training session Soldiers will be instructed on the current established doctrine related to the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT). This instructional solution will be delivered in five parts: presentation, demonstration, practice, assessments, and debrief. The instruction will begin with a presentation of the ACFT, followed by an introduction to the testing procedures and scoring requirements. Next will be a demonstration of the hand release push-up without the use AR/VR, sequenced in after is instruction, demonstration, and practice with the addition of AR/VR as a training solution and performance enhancer. Finally, instruction will conclude with a debrief of the material covered, along with a question and answer session, and an After Action Review (AAR).

Major Objectives: At the end of this instruction Soldiers will be able to:• Describe the six-events of the ACFT• Identify pass and fail requirements IAW scoring scheme and by category• Explain and demonstrate movements 1-4 of the hand release push-up• Demonstrate use of AR/VR technology as a training aid to improve motor skills• Identify correct and incorrectly performed hand release push-ups
