Benefits include high crush resistance, low abrasive wear rate, virtual chemical inertness, and the noncontamination or graying of light- colored products as found with steel media. nal combustion engines, fixed-roof tanks, surface coating operations, and VOC-fugitive processes. In addition, the software can calculate emissions using actual production data, user- specified emission factors, and AP-42 methodologies. The Air Inventory Manager includes a comprehensive reporting feature that can be used to generate annual emissions inventories for state regulatory agencies. Addi- tional reports of emissions calculations can be generated to produce dependa- ble documentation for future reference.

T he theme “Applying Common Sense” ties in with the “Common Sense Initiative” (CSI) now being implemented by the U.S. Environmental Pro-

tection Agency (EPA). The electroplating and surface finishing industry has been selected as one of six to participate in this new program. The American Electroplaters and Surface Finishers Society (AESF) is committed to helping industry understand the CSI and participate in it. In February, EPA Adminis- trator Carol Browner and some of her key staff addressed an AESF/EPA-spon- sored conference. Now AESF takes that meeting a step further at SUR/FIN* ‘95, with two sessions that will thoroughly explore the CSI and help industry learn of “cleaner, cheaper, smarter” ways of achieving compliance. Speakers include top-level EPA staff and knowledgeable industry representatives:

Multilayer Composite Coating Whifford Corp. Frazer, Pa.

Xylan 61-2-3 is a three-layer coating that employs reinforcing filaments to greatly strengthen the film. The rein- forcement performs much like glass fibers in composites, making the coat- ing more resistant to all forms of mechanical wear, including abrasion, spalling, and erosion. Various formu- lae of Xylan 61-2-3 are applied via conventional spray systems as three wet films, then cured, from 400- 700°F. Nominal buildup is 1.3 mil,
